Saturday Showcase - Sizzix Bold Text #2 Die Set

Hello friends! It's Teri with TerisMailbox. Today I am sharing seven unique cards created using the Sizzix Bold Text #2 Dies with a variety of backgrounds from my stash for The Funkie Junkie Boutique's Saturday Showcase. I tend to sit down and get creative using one technique at a time such as alcohol inks, embossing and ink smooshing. The result is a fun box full of colorful backgrounds.

Check out this great variety!

Before we jump in, I will share I have a video over on my YouTube Channel:

In case the video is not displaying, here is the link: https://youtu.be/YrCYqB0u-1I

Let's start with the ink blended background. This is the only one I created just for this video. I started with the two layer Moon Mask. I sprayed it with Pixie Spray and attached to the upper right section of an A2 size piece of white Cougar Cardstock. Using bright Distress Inks (Twisted Citron, Salvaged Patina, Squeezed Lemonade, Prize Ribbon and Chipped Sapphire), I ink blended the bright colors first in small areas on the base, followed by the blues around these areas. A spritz of water allowed the colors to soften and move. After drying the piece, I removed the moon base and blended Pumice Stone Distress Ink on the clear spot and then used the second stencil to add the craters with Hickory Smoke Distress Ink.

After drying, I splattered White Gesso on top, followed by placing a few larger spots with a paint brush tip. The base was attached to an A2 white card base. I then decided it needed additional texture. Black Soot Distress Ink stamped on the front in small sections using the Ledger Script Stamp provided that interest.

Stampers Anonymous Ledger Script Stamp CMS241

The second card is a bright and sparkly shaker card using an alcohol ink and glitter cardstock background.

This was an easy shaker to make. Start by cutting the sentiment from the alcohol inked cardstock, and trim it down to a smaller rectangle. Attach a piece of clear acrylic paper to the pack. (I used the plastic envelope that stamps come in.) Add thin foam tape around the edges, add sequins and attach to a piece of white cardstock. I did run a small line of white glue on the foam after removing the paper to help it seal well.

Create the base by ink blending Wilted Violet Distress Ink over THS155. Trim the shaker piece and attach to the front of the stenciled base. Create a focal point using the Brushstroke Butterfly Die and cutting the base with heavy vellum and the details from leftover alcohol inked cardstock. Cut the body with black cardstock, assemble and glue the body section to the perimeter of the shaker.

Products Used for Card Two:
Purple Alcohol Ink from my stash

Next up is a fun Two-fer set. Don't you love it when you have pieces left over to do that? Because these sentiment dies create both a positive and negative piece, it is so easy to make 2 cards!

This is the first card I did. Select a colorful alcohol inked piece. Cut the frame using two rectangle dies from one set. Tape them together to form a frame. After die cutting the frame, cut the sentiment from the inner gold piece as well.

Center the sentiment die and cut from the alcohol inked base. Use double sided tape on the back, covering the letter openings. This will make it easy to pop the gold letters inside.

Trim the alcohol piece and attach to a white A2 base. Center the gold frame around the letters, attach and pop the gold letters in the openings.

Products Used for Card Three:

Here is the second card of our Two-fer set! It started with an ink smooshed background with Distress Resist Spray on it. It is textured with great shine. I wish you could see it! Trim and mount the background on an A2 White card base. Center the negative sentiment piece.

Chose a coordinating piece of metallic cardstock from the Metallic Confections set and die cut using one of the Artsy Stems Dies. Thread the stem into the sentiment piece prior to attaching.

Products Used for Card Four:

Next up is another fairly simple card using an ink smooshed background. After selecting the background, ink blend another piece of cardstock to cut the embellishment from and to use as the backdrop for the sentiment. I used Twisted Citron and Cracked Pistachio Distress Ink.

Use the Lucky Love 3-D Impresslit Embossing Folder to cut one shamrock from the green paper plus three more from white cardstock to strengthen the shamrock. Use the "Lucky is a State of Mind" Die to cut it from the smooshed background. Attach the ink blended piece behind, trim to 5" by 3.75" and attach to the A2 cardbase.

Using a Vintage Photo Distress Crayon colored on your mat, add some water and use a stiff brush to grunge the shamrock. Attach the shamrock to the card in the upper right corner. I am always a huge fan of shamrocks. Our oldest son is able to find them easily. Now I have spent many hours in my childhood searching without success!

Products Used for Card Five:
Sizzix Tim Holtz 3-D Impresslit Embossing Folder - Lucky Love 665227

Next up is a feminine card using Saltwater Taffy (my new favorite color) and the doily embossing folder.

Check out the dimension and texture created with embossing folders! The background is from my stash, but I do demo how to create it in the YouTube video.

In addition to the background, I also used the Floral Frame from my stash that was already colored and ready to go. Attach the Doily background to an A2 cream cardstock base. Cut the "Choose to Shine" from another piece of cream cardstock. Use the Damask 3-D Embossing Folder to add texture and swipe with the Shabby Shutters Distress Ink pad to add a hint of color. Mount this on green cardstock, trim and add to the cardfront.

Select a Photo Shop image and attach to the back of the frame and then onto the card front. This card has so much dimension and texture, nothing else is needed! See how easy it is to make a wonderfully textured card?

Products used for Card Six:
Ideology Photobooth TH93799

Last card has a Snarky Cat in front of a brick wall. I Girl Zoe has an excellent blog post describing how to create your own brick wall using the Brickwork Embossing Folder. The link to her tutorial is HERE. I used Rusty Hinge, Vintage Photo, and Gathered Twigs Distress Inks for mine. Cut the sentiment in the top section of the brick wall. Run the piece back through your die cut machine after cutting using the folder to deepen the lines.

I love the dimension on this background! A Snarky Cat is the perfect addition to this card! Stamp the cat plus a bowtie and hat on Cougar Cardstock. After coloring with Copic Markers, fussy cut the images and add to the front! Isn't he cute?

Saturday Showcase - Peach Tea and Saltwater Taffy

Happy Spring to everyone! I'm the newest on the Design Team, but many of you know me as just Lyla from A Chief's Wife's Heart's A' Fire blog. I'm excited to bring today's Saturday Showcase to you; the first of this kind of thing for me, ever! I've had my eye on the Prima Marketing papers for some time now, and while I am a total Tim Holtz buff, I'm in love with the colors of their "Peach Tea" collection. Wouldn't you know it; Tim debuts his newest Distress color, Saltwater Taffy, and it matches the Peach Tea Papers, Flowers, and SIIC (Say It In Crystals)! So I decided to combine all four and mix it all up with one of Tim's newer Thinlits from the Sizzix Chapter 1 release. Read on and find out what I did with these...

This is what I began with. I'd ordered the three Prima Marketing Peach Tea items, along with Tim Holtz's Bunny Games Die Set and that YUMMY Saltwater Taffy, knowing it was going to go on this simple canvas board (you can get them at Dollar Tree). I picked up that baggie of trimmings from our recent building, and when I saw Tim's 3-D Textured Impressions Folder peeking at me from my Craft bag... I hit on exactly what I wanted to do!

Don't let the lighting fool ya: these Peach Tea Papers from Prima Marketing are soooooo delish looking: rich, yet pastels. I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of my Distress Inks/Oxides matched perfectly! There is a spot-on match with Distress Oxides: the brand new Saltwater Taffy, Salvaged Patina, Kitcsh Flamingo, Antique Linen, and Vintage Photo. I thought regular Salty Ocean looked good for some blue pop, but ended up changing it out for the more pastel Speckled Egg Distress Oxide. I also thought Squeezed Lemonade looked good on this paper pad, as well. I ended up using only 3 out of all of these.

Prima Marketing's double-sided designer paper pads are very sturdy paper! That's what really pleased me the most, it's the value as well as the color and usability. Here, you can see the canvas panel being covered with my FAVE sheet choice of the pad. This worn look is going to be a spectacular backdrop for those little bunnies!

Here, you can see I decided to take the boards of the paper in another direction at the bottom. Go ahead - pinch the photo and see how those upper 2 sheets matched up spot on! THAT's paper I can deal with! I used only 2 of the 6x6 sheets to cover this 8x8 panel with enough scraps (a couple shown above) leftover to use at the end. So Prima matches up their ends here and that is more value for me. A little line of not matching was ME. I started to freehand cut and changed to the knife. Don't worry - it won't be seen anyway. I did edge the bottom two with Antique Linen Distress Oxide.

Grab some stash cardstock (I keep a ton of black, browns, and whites to use in between layers or for stiffening help, etc) in brownish-tanish... can I make a basket freehand cutting? Let's see...

This is where Tim's "Intertwine" 3-D Embossing Folder came in... I DRY embossed it. I was looking for it to be like a RATTY type of basket. I wanted the texture, and I wasn't going to get ratty if I spritzed water. Another thing I didn't want; no coloring. Just this plain color and sanding was planned.

Again, don't worry about the line. I'll have filling for this basket a 'plenty!

I ended up needing a backside for this. The dry embossing went great and I had little holes in there (you can see up on the basket middle), but to keep glue from coming through, I was going to need to tape this all up and use my Glossy Accents at the end.

If I'm going to make a basket...it's going to LOOK like a real basket. So here's some top edging. Just roll that piece and then roll it again, with tape to hold it.

Here's the backside - it's all holding together and ready for the panel.

I made a larger pattern first (right side) and then cut it more exactly from another sheet of the stash. Embossing needed it to be in 2 pieces to get it through my Big Shot, so I have a space. ;)

Here's that plastic "wood" shaving. It was soooo soft and stayed together. I was grabbing it off the ground before the guys could ruin it by cutting more junk into it!

And now...heeeeeeere's the HARES! The Peach Tea papers and the Saltwater Taffy are just SOOO PERFECT TOGETHER, but add the Tim Holtz Bunny Games....I'm talking CUTE, here!

These bunnies are TINY, but that's exactly what makes them so stinkin' CUTE! And - biggest surprise for this Crafter (as some of you know, I've had severe RA for half my life) - was to find this set to be not so many pieces! The set itself is sorted together so that you don't even need the instructions to get the colors right. I did look for a video but didn't find one, so I simply cut all the bunny parts all on one sheet. I noticed right away that there were fewer pieces than in most of the Colorized sets, and the eggs in the set were SUPER SIMPLE! Just 2 dies each for a large egg and a small egg.

The only thing I can say that this Tim Holtz Bunny Games Die Set won't do well when reversed. I know some of the Colorize sets can be reversed, but when I tried to do so with this... You can see above here - the bunny just 'lost' his... roundness/puffiness. NOT cute. Yet, my plan was still going to work just fine.

Cracking eggs was never EASIER! Simply make the egg with the 2 cuts (glue together), and make another full cut, but don't glue it. Hold the 2 pieces together as you cut zig-zagged all the way through. Put the unglued (inside will be white, so the extra cut is white) zigszagged pieces slightly jutted out of the glued set zigszagged pieces. You now have an open egg. You can even just glue all around the outer edges, so you make a pocket in each half. (I have an idea going for using that.)

Now - those Prima Marketing Peach Tea SIIC (Say It In Crystals). This is my first time using these, and I am LOVING how ROUNDED they are! Fully rounded out but look faceted and sweetly matching all the same colors as the papers!

I even did a pink/blue/pink/blue painstakingly perfectionist I am. LOL

The color is closer here - a bit washed out to me. But for thinking "Spring"... I couldn't have chosen a better color scheme for this project! (THANK YOU, LINDA!!)

Here's everything I used - some of my stuff is VERY old now. I've linked the important stuff at the bottom. PLEASE CHECK OUT THIS PAPER THEME!! The Distress Inks I've used will show you the colors much better than I can on a blogpost.

ARE YOU READY?
Here's the resulting project:

Be Curious! I certainly am: our fourth Grandchild is due August 27th and I am so excited! Boy, or Girl won't matter to this Memaw...just a healthy HAPPY Baby is all I ask.

Tim's Bunnies have black for eyes and 1 eye is a tiny bit smaller than the other (on both bunnies). But not this Memaw's Grandbabies - so far, all 3 have huge BlueBlue eyes. Princess (the only girl so far) has purple flecks in hers. So these bunnies got 2 larger dotted eyes in blue (from stash trash).

That leftover paper became another "board" that got some Tim Holtz Idea-ology Mini Fasteners and a Quote Chip Theories (edged with Distress Crayon Picket Fence). See the baby bunny - no particular color on this one... just plain Peach Tea paper with shadowing in Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Antique Linen for a bit of depth. Bunny paws are trying to break the shell, but the ears are already popping out!

There couldn't have been a better (in all ways a paper can be better!) paper collection to use for this particular project. And the Spring feeling it gives makes me think of all the baby blue/pink that will be distracting me all through the summer. I don't think they want to know what it will be, but no matter: this Memaw LOVES her new Wittle GrandBunny!

I had fun doing this project, and it helped that all of it seemed to just match itself! I hope you'll be inspired to try a few of the Prima Marketing Papers - especially the Peach Tea collection! Have a super Saturday!

Guest Designer - Linda Coughlin

This is a big HELLO to friends near and far whom I haven’t been in touch with and who haven’t seen me crafting in several years. My craft room, tools and supplies have been gathering dust while I’ve been consumed with running The Funkie Junkie Boutique. From crafter to small business woman…it’s been a journey that hasn’t always been fun but has been interesting.

This week with our challenge blog needing a guest designer, my team has nudged and cajoled me to fill the guest designer gap by creating a piece of artwork. WHOA! That’s not as easy as you would think. First I had to knock down the cobwebs that smacked me in the face when I opened my craft room door (figuratively, but still the first mental hurdle), then to clean up all the junk that I’ve been shoving in here (out of sight…ya know?). I spent two days getting reacquainted with all my craft supplies and filling up three waste baskets as I opened dried out jars and bottles.

After cleaning and organizing, I plopped myself down at the craft table and…ugh, now what? What do I do, where do I go for inspiration? I watched a few YouTube videos and went to The Funkie Junkie Boutique to shop. I messed around and played at my craft table for a couple of evenings, made a couple of tags for fun but threw them in the trash. Finally I went back to my frilly vintage roots and came up with something.

To start with, I wanted to use some sort of medium paste through a stencil. We just received a huge shipment from Prima Marketing with some great Jewel Effect glitter pastes. I wanted red for my Valentine’s make, chose Precious Rubies and used it with the Tim Holtz Layering Stencil THS032 Flourish. The paste is wonderful. It goes on smoothly and cleanly and dried in a couple of hours (even in the cold, rainy north Florida weather this week).

The stencil area only covered 2/3 of the area of my card’s panel, so I needed to fill in the rest. My mind was really trending toward red and black and I decided to coordinate the stenciling with a die cut. One of the great things about using Tim Holtz products is that many of the designs from product line to product line coordinate and work together. Tim’s Sizzix Thinlits Mixed Media #2 has a die that matches the stencil I used.

Using a piece of black card stock, I applied Sizzix Adhesive Sheets #656802 to the back and then ran it through my Big Shot. If you are not using this (or a similar product) when cutting your intricate dies, let me tell you, it is life changing. Being able to peel off the sticker backing and press down the die cut makes it not only effortless but allows for a perfect adherence. The die cut wasn't wide enough to fill the space so I had to piece it.

Now I needed a strip or ribbon to cover where the two panels joined. Searching my stash, I found just what I had in mind. Years ago, there was a Tim Holtz Idea-ology product called Deco Sheets and I found some left over glittery silver plus some glittery red from an unknown source. Pulling out my old Shape Strips Thinlits set 660226, I cut a strip of the silver and then backed it with the glittery red (bonus, a bunch of tiny silver glittery hearts). Digging through some set aside embellishments, I came across a flower that had been cut with the old Tattered Florals die plus a vintage looking sparkly heart that already had the attached “Love” charm in black! Why make something new when just the right thing jumps out and says “hey, give me some love too”?

Next, I needed a sentiment and riffled through all my old stamp sets. The one that really grabbed me was from Wendy Vecchi/Stampers Anonymous SCS131 A Passion For Art: "I never knew how much LOVE my heart could hold until I found YOU." It all seemed to come together with that sentiment.

I felt the card needed one more element, and sticking with the black and red theme, I cut a black heart using the Sizzix Impresslit Lucky Love 665227 (we still have a couple of these discontinued Impresslits left in the shop!). I very lightly burnished it with Prima Metallique Wax in White Pearl to give it the tarnished antique silver look. I'm a huge fan of the Prima Metallique Waxes. I love the way the black cardstock now looks like a heavily tarnished silver piece.

Saturday Showcase - Petite Petals Die by Emily Tootle for Sizzix

It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase today.  I received a couple of new die sets from Linda and I decided to use the Petite Petals set by Emily Tootle to create some Artist Trading Cards (ATCs).

For my substrates, I used three old playing cards.  Playing cards are the perfect size for an ATC - 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and they are a decent weight.  I started by gluing old book paper to both sides of each card.  I always glue one side first and trim the excess book paper away and then cover the second side.

I will show photos of the background for this first one and then describe how I created the others so this post isn't too long.

I started by covering both sides with a light coat of White Gesso (Dina Wakley) and then added some Thundercloud and Atlantis IZink Pigment Ink (Seth Apter).

Some stenciling was added using Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger) and a Reverse Chicken Wire stencil

More stenciling was added with a Checkmate stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Cornflower Blue Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).

Next I used a stencil from my stash and Distress Texture Paste Crackle (Tim Holtz) to add more interest. Originally I planned to make the emebellishments a different colour so when I chose the black and cream paper, I had to go back in and use a teeny paint brush with some Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) to change the colour of the texture paste.

Here is how all the floral embellishments were created - more recycling. This time I grabbed the box where I keep all the leftover bits and pieces of patterned paper and used some of the dies from the set.

The black and cream paper for the Petite Petals on this first ATC is from a collection called Mon Amour (Graphic 45). I also added a Chitchat sticker that I inked with some Cornflower Blue Acrylic Ink.

For this ATC, I did not add any Gesso to the old book paper, I put a little Lemon, Tangerine and Sedona Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) on my kraft sheet, watered it down and then dragged the card through the paint puddles. One side was dried with my heat gun before I repeated the process for the second side.

Next I added some Olive Drab IZink Pigment Ink (Seth Apter to each side. When everything was dry, I loosely dry brushed some Aloe Acrylic Paint on each side. Finally I used Coffee Archival Ink (Ranger) to add some random stenciling through the Burlap stencil (Tim Holtz) and to ink the edges of the card.

Finally I added the Petite Petals from the photo above and another Chitchat sticker. The sticker and the flowers were inked with Wild Honey Distress Ink.

For my final ATC I covered both sides with some White Gesso and then painted it with Carnation Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley). Thistle Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) was used with an old cross hatch stamp wo add some markings. This was followed with some of the Distress Texture Paste Crackle through the Checkmate stencil. Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) and a Harlequin stencil (Tim Holtz) were used to add more markings.

The stem was cut from a scrap of grey card stock using the Garden Greens die (Tim Holtz). The Petite Petals flowers were cut from a Maja Designs collection called Vintage Autumn Basics and were inked with Thistle Archival Ink, which was also used to ink the edges of the Chitchat sticker and the card itself. The leaves were inked with Peeled Pain Distress Ink (Tim Holtz).

Note to self:  Try aiming for the centre when you add the centres to the flowers. 😂😂

ATCs are super fun to make and with these Petite Petals, you can easily create some very special floral ones.  I encourage you to pop over to the shop and purchase this super versatile die set.
