Saturday Showcase - Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks Kraft Journal Collage Pages

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you. Today I have some new Kraft Journal pages to share with you featuring backgrounds made with Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks. This kind of journaling with faces and lots of colour is new to me and has been so much fun to experiment with.

Let's get started with peeks at the finished pages before getting into looking at each one in more detail;

Here is the first journal spread in full, featuring a stamped lady from the 'Better Together' stamp set and words from the 'Be Willing' stamp set.

I started by laying down a blend of warm colours from the Scribble Sticks 2 set, making sure to apply lots of the dry paint onto the kraft card so that it would blend a little better when water was added in a few places. As a contrast torn pieces of music score were added over the top followed by some white gesso.

That layer of white over the colour helped the complimentary scraps of design tape and some contrasting stencilling to stand out more. I used one of the patterns from the 'Marks' stencil with 'Turquoise' acrylic paint for this.

Finally the scribbled circles, cut from one of the sheets in the 'Elements' Collage Paper pack, were added with gel medium and the words and lady were stamped on with permanent black ink. I extended the design by drawing in extra lines and adding more asemic writing. White gesso was used to paint in the top of the lady's head and I emphasised the colour running across her eyes by re-applying more 'Sedona' Scribble Stick.

Here is the second journal spread in full, featuring a stamped head from the 'Ledger Girls' stamp set and words from the 'Not Subtle' stamp set.

In much the same way as before I started by laying down a blend of cool colours from the Scribble Sticks 2 set before adding more torn pieces of music score over the top followed by some white gesso.

This time, after adding complimentary scraps of design tape over the top I applied white gesso through another of the patterns from the 'Marks' stencil. The three block design from the 'Be Willing' stamp set was stamped in places using 'Mulberry' Archival Ink and then I splattered contrasting 'Lemon' and 'Cheddar' paint from the Scribble Sticks over the top.

Be aware that Archival Ink will bleed through whatever is applied on top, including paint. I learned this after finding that it happened to the tags I applied over the top (cut from the 'Elements' Collage Paper pack and painted on the reverse with 'Sand' acrylic paint). To rectify this I simply re-stamped the blocks with the same ink over the top. The head and words were stamped onto tea stained heavyweight paper with black permanent ink before being cut out and mounted on top of the tags.

Here is the last journal spread in full, featuring a face from the 'Elements' Collage Paper pack and words from the 'Be Willing' stamp set.

For this final journal spread I tried something different, starting by applying a layer of white gesso onto the kraft card before adding lots of colour from the 'Lime' Scribble Stick on top. I found that the gesso made blending out the paint from the Scribble Stick with a little water much easier. As a contrast this time torn pieces of kraft wrapping paper were added over the top followed by more white gesso.

This time lots of different layers were added including vertical strips of masking tape, a horizontal line of stencilling using 'Evergreen' acrylic paint through the 'Bumps' stencil, a coordinating strip of design tape and a strip cut from one of the sheets in the 'Elements' Collage Paper pack. I drew on a zig zag line of faux stitching with a black pen and wrote some asemic script over the top of the whole background with a white pen.

To finish I splattered contrasting 'Sedona' and 'Marine' paint from the Scribble Sticks over the top. The Collage Paper head was painted on the reverse with 'Buff' acrylic paint and cut out before being applied over the background with some gel medium. I extended the design with more paint and a black pen before using the Scribble Sticks to add a little colour to the lips, cheeks and eyes. The words were stamped onto white card with permanent black ink before being added onto the background.

Saturday Showcase - Christmas with Tim Holtz Yuletide Gatherings Stamp Set

Hello, it is Cec here and today I am presenting the Saturday Showcase.  I have made a couple of Christmas cards and a tag to share with you featuring the new Yuletide Gatherings Stamp Set from Tim Holtz.

For the first card I started with a piece of watercolour card stock cut slightly smaller than my 5" x 7" kraft card blank and inked it by smooshing it through some Tea Dye, Scattered Straw and Old Paper Distress Oxide (Tim Holtz).

Next I added some stenciling with Mini Stencil #19 (Tim Holtz) and Old Paper DI.  A little more stenciling was added after the large image was stamped on the panel.

Once it was dry I stamped the large image from the set with Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger).

The image was  coloured using a water brush (Tim Holtz) and a variety of Distress Inks - Old Paper, Antique Linen, Gathered Twigs, Fired Bricks, Aged Mahogany, Peeled Paint, Forest Moss and Pine Needles.

I also stamped the small poinsettia image on another piece of watercolour card and coloured it with the same Distress Inks that I used in that portion of the large image.  Once the image was dry I fussy cut it and added it on top of the large image with some dimensional foam.  The edges of the panel were inked with Gathered Twigs DI before it was added to the card blank.

I cut a piece of card stock and ran it through an embossing folder called Starry Night (Sizzix) and then rubbed over the strip with Gold Wax Paste, inked the edges with Gathered Twigs DI and added it to the panel along with a computer generated sentiment that was also inked with Gathered Twigs DI.

Some seam binding was dyed with Antique Linen DI and formed into a loopy bow that was tied with another loopy bow of burlap string.  A pine cone charm was altered with some Gold Mixative Alcohol Ink (Tim Holtz) and added to the bow.

The second card blank is also kraft card stock and measures 4 1/4" x 5 1/2".  I started the layering with a panel of Gold Metallic Kraft Stock (Tim Holtz).  Next came a panel of cream card stock that was embossed with the Starry Nights embossing folder and rubbed with the Gold Wax Paste.

I cut an oval from some green card stock, stamped the small pine branch image with Versamark and heat embossed it with some Gold Embossing Powder.  A computer generated sentiment was inked with Antique Linen DI and added along with some tiny gold sequins.

The little tag measures 3" x 5" and was hand cut from watercolour card stock.  It was inked with Scattered Straw and Old Paper DO before I splattered it with water.  The small poinsettia image was stamped with Jet Black Archival Ink and then coloured with Ruby, Olive, Evergreen and Ancient Scribble Sticks (Dina Wakley).

I used the Christmas THS030 stencil (Tim Holtz) to add the word Joy in Forest Moss and Peeled Paint DI.  A piece of seam binding dyed with Peeled Paint DI was added to the top and finally a few tiny sequins were glued on.

I always love it when I can use one product in a variety of ways and by using different techniques for stamping and colouring this wonderful set shows how versatile it can be.

Saturday Showcase - Dina Wakley Scribble Sticks

It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase this time.  I am going to share a couple of projects I made with the Scribble Sticks from Dina Wakley.

The Scribble Sticks are the shape of crayons you used as a kid but don't have any wax in them, which is the part I love the most.  They react with water, are highly pigmented and can be used in a variety of ways.  There are three sets and the colours are the same as the Dina Wakley paints.

For my first project, I made a tag.

I started with a 4" x 8" tag that I cut from mat board because I needed something that would stand up to wet media and didn't have any of the many options available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique that are perfect for this type of project.

Some chipboard honeycomb bits that my husband cut for me on the laser cutter were added next and then both sides of the tag were covered with White Gesso (Dina Wakley).

Next I dry brushed some Lime Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) over both sides of the tag.  I used a Mini Mister (Tim Holtz) to spritz the front with water and let it run.

I used the Lime and Olive sticks to scribble on the tag in random areas (I added some Peacock but forgot to include it in the photo).  To blend the colour I dipped a paint brush in water and went over the scribbles.

To add more colour, I dropped water in a few spots on the tag and dipped the Evergreen stick in the puddles until I got the amount of colour I wanted and then moved the tag around to let it run.

I continued to drip colour on the tag alternating it with bits of White Gesso rubbed on with my finger until I was happy with the background.

Some Magenta was scribbled through a Polka Dotty stencil (Wendy Vecchi) on the top right and bottom left corners and then leaving the stencil in place, I blended it with water.  I found it bled a bit so while it was still wet, I gently patted it with some paper toweling and quite liked the result.

I added some additional stenciling with a Burlap Stencil (Tim Holtz) and Pink Peony Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).  Next came some stamping with Orange Blossom Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) and a star in a circle stamp (Tim Holtz).  I found these elements a bit dark so I knocked them back with some watered down White Gesso rubbed on with my finger and then I stamped some Text from the Entomology set (Tim Holtz) and Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).  Some splatters of white paint were also added.

The medium flower from the Fancy Florals set (Dylusions) was stamped onto watercolour card stock with Versamark (Tsukineko) and heat embossed with clear embossing powder (Ranger).  I coloured all three flowers (the third one was out of camera range) with the Magenta stick.  This time I dipped my paint brush in water and then rubbed it against the bottom of the stick to pick up some colour before I applied it to the card stock.  I went back as many times as needed to add some shading.  I also made sure I coloured outside the lines so I could see where to fussy cut - any other time I would be making sure I didn't go outside the lines.

To make the topper, I dyed some seam binding with the Evergreen stick by dripping water about the size of a quarter onto my kraft mat and then dipping the end of the stick in it.  Note: Because the end of the stick softens in the water be sure to set it down where the end can hang over the edge until it dries so you don't lose any pigment by letting it rub up against something.

The sentiment words are stickers from the Big Chat collection (Tim Holtz) and they have been added to strips of card stock painted with the Evergreen stick.  One flower was adhered with Scor Tape and the other two with dimensional foam dots.

For my second project, I made an art journal page.

I started creating the background by mixing the sticks in little puddles of water and then dripping them on the substrate using a pipette.  To control the flow of the colour I used the end of the pipette to move it around rather than picking the sheet up because I didn't want long runs of colour.

I added some stenciling with a Harlequin Stencil (Tim Holtz) and Deep Purple Archival Ink (Ranger) as well as the Dots and Stripes Borders Stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Forget-Me-Not Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).  Then I took a brayer and rolled a thin coat of White Gesso over the whole page.

I used the Elephant stick to add some Asemic writing and went over it with a barely damp paint brush.

I hand cut some hearts from watercolour card stock and painted them with the Magenta and Blackberry sticks using them on their own as well as mixed together.  When they dried I added wiggly borders with a fine Pigma Micron pen (Sakura).

The next step was to stamp each heart with text from the Entomology set using Watering Can Archival Ink.  That was followed by stenciling using the Checkmate Stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Twisted Citron Distress Ink (Tim Holtz, the Dots and Stripes Borders Stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Picked Raspberry DI and finally the Bubble Stencil (Tim Holtz) and Picket Fence DI.

I painted some punched flowers with the Cheddar stick and added spiral centres with a Purple Glaze Pen (Sakura).  The hearts were adhered to the page using Scor Tape and the flowers were added with dimensional foam.  Finally I added a sentiment of words from the Big Chat sticker collection mounted on top of card stock painted with the Evergreen stick.

Dina says that the Scribble Sticks can be used on top of her paints so I painted a little manilla tag from the office supplies store with some of her Lime Acrylic Paint and then added marks.  I found that a barely damp paint brush was the best way to blend the marks but keep them distinct.  If you have too much water the pigment moves too much.

I also tested the bright coloured sticks on Kraft card stock and found the colours stayed lovely and vibrant.  I really should have tried to see what happens on black card stock.

I hope you will give these a try.  I love them and my very artistic Granddaughter saw them and tried to talk me out of them because she thought they were fabulous - I prevailed and they are still in my craft stash and not in hers.
