Saturday Showcase - Tim Holtz Metallic Confections 3D Impresslits Leaf Cards

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you and kick start your creative weekend. This time the focus falls on Tim Holtz 3D Impresslits 'Leaf' Embossing Folder which embosses and cuts the most beautiful leaves. By teaming it with his Kraft Stock 'Metallic Confections' and adding a little painterly magic they make beautiful aged leaves that are perfect for adorning cards and more. Here's an example of the finish you can achieve (before and after);

(click on any of the images to get a closer look)

To start grab a sheet of each colour Kraft Stock in the Metallic Confections pack - they come in all of these delicious shades;

Cut a piece of Kraft Stock large enough to fit over the leaves in the 3D Impresslits Embossing Folder and place it shiny side down on the cutting side.

Run through your embossing machine following the layering instructions on the 3D Impresslits packaging. Release your leaves from the folder and marvel at the incredible intricacy of the embossed design and die cutting.

Now cover the leaves in a thin layer of Dina Wakley Media 'Black' Acrylic Paint using a small paint brush.

When the paint is partially dry rub with a soft cloth to remove the excess. The longer you leave the paint the less you will remove so try experimenting to get the look you are happy with.

Once the paint has been removed you may find you have slightly flattened your leaves. This is easily rectified by replacing them in the Embossing Folder and pressing down gently on the reverse side with your thumbs to re-emboss them.

You will now have beautiful aged leaves ready to use on your projects. Here's how the other colours look when you use the same process on them.

Now to add them to a project (or two). For this first card I added some of the leaves to a plain white background embossed with the 3D Embossing Folder 'Elegant'. It's a good idea to add dimensional foam tape to the underside of the leaves to support them and prevent flattening the design when posting. You'll see below that I also added some twisted wire tendrils, a few self adhesive gems, two Tim Holtz Ideaology Adornments Butterflies (altered with white paint in the same way as the leaves were done) and a sentiment from Tim's 'Life Quotes' stamp set.

Here are a couple of close ups;

The second card picks up on the current challenge theme 'It's Heating Up!' incorporating leaves with warmer colours over a background smooshed with Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint (Buff and Sand) Tim Holtz 'Architecture' stamp and a 'Tattered Butterfly' die cut. There is an Ideaology Clockhand in the centre of the butterfly and a Small Talk sentiment, and to finish the card I mounted it on more Metallic Kraft Stock (this time in Copper).

Saturday Showcase - Tim Holtz Metallic Kraft Stock

It is Saturday and it's Cec here with another Saturday Showcase.  I am going to share some Christmas cards I have made with Tim Holtz Metallic Kraft Stock.

I know it is only April but I decided an early start would help alleviate that last minute rush I have every year.

Since my main objective was to show you the versatility of this paper I didn't use a bunch of techniques so there are no process photos but I will describe how each project came together and you will see that each is different from the last.  The only common thread besides the use of the Metallic Kraft Stock is that they are flat enough to mail with regular postage - WIN!

I only have the Metallic (gold and silver), Metallic 2 (rose gold and copper) and the Metallic Jewels (multiple deep toned colours).  I wish I had the Metallic Confections (lighter tones) but it was out of stock.

The first card was made with a mat of deep blue metallic followed by a panel of swirly paper that I printed from a digital freebie.  I printed the sentiment on a band of white card stock and punched a snowflake border on each side.  The borders were inked with Stormy Sky Distress Ink (Tim Holtz).  Next I cut some snowflakes from silver, deep blue and turquoise metallic using the Paper Snowflakes die (Tim Holtz) and a couple of punches.  Don't you love the way the light picks us the shine and even changes it slightly when hit with bright light?

For the next card I used a pine branch punch to cut a pile of green metallic along with some scraps of regular green card stock.  All these pine branches were glued into a wreath shape using Collage Medium (Tim Holtz).  To finish it off I added some red dollar store gems and a little organza bow.

The next card started with a panel of paper from a paper pad in my Funkie Junkie Boutique stash called Sweet Peppermint (Prima).  I inked the edges with some Aged Mahogany DI (Tim Holtz).  Next I die cut some large poinsettia petals from red metallic and small ones from rose gold metallic .  I also cut some green using the Holiday Greens die (Tim Holtz).  Once all the pieces were cut, I used a sanding block to scuff them up.  The poinsettias were layered and a few Champagne adhesive pearls (Kaisercraft) were added to the centres.  The sentiment cut by my husband was added last.

I changed up the card shape and size with the next two cards.  The first one is simply a panel of silver metallic  that has been run through an embossing folder and then I added some little dollar store gems.  The word "JOY" was cut from red using the Alphanumeric die (Tim Holtz).

For this card I thought I would try stamping on the Metallic Kraft Stock.  First I tried it with Archival ink and it beaded up and even after I dried it with the heat gun, it rubbed off.  The same thing happened with Distress Ink so I pulled out some Versamark (Tsukineko) and stamped the snowflake from the Christmas Blueprints set (Tim Holtz) in my stash onto some turquoise metallic  using Winter's Mistake Embossing Powder (Emerald Creek).  That worked but next time I would remember to use a chalk pouch on the Metallic Kraft Stock before I stamped.  Before I added the snowflake panel and the sentiment to the card blank, I added a panel of paper from the Zella Teal pad (Prima) in my Funkie Junkie Boutique stash that was inked with Tumbled Glass DI.

When I was looking for a suitable embossing folder to make the silver card I came across some little folders that I don't think I have ever used so I created some little gift tags with them and some of the metallic scraps.

So, as you can see there is lots you can do with Metallic Kraft Stock - punch it, die cut it, scuff it, run it through an embossing folder, heat emboss on it and use it as a mat.  I don't own any of the 3D embossing folders or Impresslits from Tim Holtz but they do look fantastic with this Metallic Kraft Stock.  I will provide a link to them in the store and if you check out this link to one of Tim's videos, you will be inspired to add some to your cart as I plan to.

I have done some pretty simple things but I will bet that many of you will have other ideas on how you can use these papers so I hope you share them with us.

Saturday Showcase--Tim Holtz Sizzix Alterations Gift Card Package and Ideaology Papers

Hello and welcome to another Saturday Showcase feature! It's Sara Emily here to shine the spotlight on Tim Holtz Gift Card Package Thinlits die set and a variety of his Ideaology papers and card stocks--products which are available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. I think it comes as no surprise that I am a big fan of Tim Holtz products. I love their timeless appeal. As you will see in this post, the older releases marry perfectly with his newest releases. Since our current challenge is 'Tis the Season For Gift Giving!', my mind went straight to Christmas gift cards, but you could easily change out the papers and embellishments to make these gift card holders suitable for any occasion.

There are so many Tim Holtz papers and card stocks available, but I focused my tutorial on his Forest and Holly Collage Papers, Metallic and Classic Kraft Stocks, Wood Grain Cardstock, and Distress Mixed Media Heavystock. You'll note that I also used his Christmas Paper Stashes from this and last year's holiday releases and Christmas Worn Wallpaper. I kept my embellishments low key, because I really wanted these to be a simple, fast project. Who isn't crunched for time at this time of the year?

I. LOVE. THIS. DIE. SET. The Gift Card Package Thinlits set comes with six separate dies pictured above. The two on the right make the card envelope and the topper for the insert. On the left is the bow, ribbon strip and the insert that actually holds the gift card in place. At the center is the gift tag. I made my ten gift card packages assembly line fashion, but I took a few photos along the way to show you my process. This is so easy; perhaps the hardest part might be choosing which papers to die cut.

The tutorial:

Before adhering Holly and Forest Collage Paper to  Heavystock, I lined up the paper so that the design would be oriented properly. This piece folds in half and you don't want your words to be upside down on one side!  Heavystock is sold in 8.5 x 1, 4.25 x 5.5 inches and #8 tags--you will need the 8.5 x 11 inches to fit the dies.

I die cut one card envelope and two toppers from this panel. I repeated this step with various chosen papers/card to complete my 10 gift card holders. Fold each card envelope on the score lines that are impressed with the die. Because of the thickness of  Heavystock, I found it's best to score those scorelines one more time, so you get a nice fold.

I cut three smaller pieces of the Heavystock to fit the insert die and colored them with Distress oxide inks. Starting with the lightest color, I dip and drag the card through watery puddles of each one, drying between each layer of color. I colored both sides of each of these panels.

I stamped this one using the branch from Winter Watercolor and oxide ink. Before stamping I spritzed the stamp with water to get the water color look. I overstamped with a sentiment from Great Outdoors in Archival ink.

 I stamped each of the remaining oxide panels with the music from Music & Advert set with Hickory Smoke. I use my stamp platform to ensure a good impression. Because I wanted a crisper image. I didn't spritz the stamp with water this time.

Die cut the panel, making sure your image is oriented correctly so the music is not upside down when you cut. You can see where I taped my panel to the platform and there is no image. That's fine, because this portion will be covered with the topper panel. But if you want to avoid tape lines, there is a great reusable sticker you can use on the back of your panel to secure it--Sticky Grid. Tim Holtz shows how easy it is to use in his Holiday Hacks videos.

I die cut a few card envelopes and toppers out of Distress Woodgrain card and blended with oxides . Splash with a bit of water and heat dry for a nice distressed look. (Again, you will want the larger size of the card, so the dies will fit.)

Have fun die cutting a bunch of card holder inserts and bows/ribbon to go with your packages. Then sand the various pieces that were cut from Metallic and Classic Kraft Stock. I do this on a piece of waste cardboard, so I don't scratch my craft mat.

I cut a few of the bows/ribbon from gold Metallic Kraft Stock. I wanted a vibrant red to go with the Holly Collage Paper packages, so I pounced the metallic die cuts with Watermelon alcohol ink using a felt applicator. A bit of  Mushroom ink gives it a grungy, vintage vibe.

Next, ink all those edges using a blending tool to give your pieces a vintage look. You can skip this step if you wish; it's just my preference and only takes a few extra moments. If you're inking, don't neglect the opposite side--it will show and it's all about the details.

Stamp  your favorite sentiment (I used last year's Christmas Classic set which fit perfectly.) and cut with the tag die. You could also use a remnant rub in place of the stamping or a combination of both stamp and rub. You might write a handwritten message or add one of the Christmas Ephemera or Snippets.  This is a great way to put some of those leftovers from last year into play.

This ephemera hides a gluing error. I glued my bow to the wrong side. Things can get a little mindless when you're on the assembly line!

Lastly, glue all your pieces. I used Glossy Accents, because it dries quickly, so I can assemble a bunch of these packages in a very short time. Here's a closer look at the finished gift card packages.

As much as I love Metallic, I've never had much success with photographing it. This is very pretty in real life and my favorite of the group. This is Worn Wallpaper with the insert done in Holly Collage over Heavystock. 25 is an old gilded Remnant Rub on a Snippet.

More Worn Wallpaper on one, and Lumber 3D embossing on the other. For the men in your life.

I really had some fun mixing up the prints on these!

Now I need to go buy some gift cards! It just dawned on me how cute these would be on an Advent Calendar. Instead of gift cards you could include a special activity for the day. I hope you've enjoyed today's tutorial and are inspired to make a few of your own personalized Gift Card Packages!

 Happy Crafting!
