Saturday Showcase - Ranger Dina Wakley Media Chipboard Shapes & Stampers Anonymous - Rubber Stamp Faded Type

Happy Saturday! Suzz here to share a showcase featuring the Ranger Dina Wakley Media Chipboard Shapes - Sprigs and a smattering of the Stampers Anonymous Faded Type stamps.

I pulled out all of the sprigs and played with them in a variety of ways, including using them as masks when adding the color to the chipboard.

To create this card:

  • Stamp the background with Faded Type Stamp inked up with Iced Spruce and spritz with water. Repeat randomly over the background.
  • The chipboard was gessoed. spritzed with Antique Linen distress spray and then sponged with Iced Spruce. I finished it off with an embossed surface of clear embossing powder.
  • The seam binding was inked up with Iced Spruce.
  • The rest was layered with Prima flowers, leaves, and branches.

This was a happy accident as I dyed the old lace and wanted more of a fray to the edges so I cut off one edge. They were lying there and I rolled one up and liked how it looked. I decided to use them as flowers.

After I left it to sit for a day, I thought it would pop better as Iced Spruce flowers. I created a new inky edge and used them to create new blue tinted flowers.

To create this card:

  • Paint the chipboard with white gesso. Ink up with Antique Linen and Iced Spruce Distress Ink.
  • Heat set the chipboard.
  • Stamp the faded text stamp using Versamark Watermark Ink.  Heat emboss with brown embossing powder.
  • For the background:  Use the burlap layering stencil and apply texture paste.  Spray with a mix of Distress Spray Vintage Photo, Iced Spruce and Mica Spray Antique Bronze.
  • Spray lace with Antique Bronze and Walnut Stain Distress Ink Sprays.
  • Stamp sentiment and heat emboss with brown embossing powder.

I had a variety of backgrounds created from the spray and the chipboard masking the background.

 Different color sprays.

And then cutting out the section to create a tag.

Then using a mix of the background layered with the chipboard and a simple sentiment to create a quick card.

I even re-used my flowers that were replaced with the blue blossoms in the next card.

The tag had a mix of the background with an overlay of stamped text which was embossed with a soft ivory embossing powder.

Finally something completely different with the chipboard being stamped, clear embossed and gilded with some glittery mica flakes.

This was a shimmery fun wintry scene in unexpected gold, orange, yellow hues.

I hope this has you thinking of how to use the chipboard and stamps in a variety of ways.

Saturday Showcase - Petite Petals Die by Emily Tootle for Sizzix

It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase today.  I received a couple of new die sets from Linda and I decided to use the Petite Petals set by Emily Tootle to create some Artist Trading Cards (ATCs).

For my substrates, I used three old playing cards.  Playing cards are the perfect size for an ATC - 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and they are a decent weight.  I started by gluing old book paper to both sides of each card.  I always glue one side first and trim the excess book paper away and then cover the second side.

I will show photos of the background for this first one and then describe how I created the others so this post isn't too long.

I started by covering both sides with a light coat of White Gesso (Dina Wakley) and then added some Thundercloud and Atlantis IZink Pigment Ink (Seth Apter).

Some stenciling was added using Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger) and a Reverse Chicken Wire stencil

More stenciling was added with a Checkmate stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Cornflower Blue Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).

Next I used a stencil from my stash and Distress Texture Paste Crackle (Tim Holtz) to add more interest. Originally I planned to make the emebellishments a different colour so when I chose the black and cream paper, I had to go back in and use a teeny paint brush with some Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) to change the colour of the texture paste.

Here is how all the floral embellishments were created - more recycling. This time I grabbed the box where I keep all the leftover bits and pieces of patterned paper and used some of the dies from the set.

The black and cream paper for the Petite Petals on this first ATC is from a collection called Mon Amour (Graphic 45). I also added a Chitchat sticker that I inked with some Cornflower Blue Acrylic Ink.

For this ATC, I did not add any Gesso to the old book paper, I put a little Lemon, Tangerine and Sedona Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) on my kraft sheet, watered it down and then dragged the card through the paint puddles. One side was dried with my heat gun before I repeated the process for the second side.

Next I added some Olive Drab IZink Pigment Ink (Seth Apter to each side. When everything was dry, I loosely dry brushed some Aloe Acrylic Paint on each side. Finally I used Coffee Archival Ink (Ranger) to add some random stenciling through the Burlap stencil (Tim Holtz) and to ink the edges of the card.

Finally I added the Petite Petals from the photo above and another Chitchat sticker. The sticker and the flowers were inked with Wild Honey Distress Ink.

For my final ATC I covered both sides with some White Gesso and then painted it with Carnation Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley). Thistle Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) was used with an old cross hatch stamp wo add some markings. This was followed with some of the Distress Texture Paste Crackle through the Checkmate stencil. Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) and a Harlequin stencil (Tim Holtz) were used to add more markings.

The stem was cut from a scrap of grey card stock using the Garden Greens die (Tim Holtz). The Petite Petals flowers were cut from a Maja Designs collection called Vintage Autumn Basics and were inked with Thistle Archival Ink, which was also used to ink the edges of the Chitchat sticker and the card itself. The leaves were inked with Peeled Pain Distress Ink (Tim Holtz).

Note to self:  Try aiming for the centre when you add the centres to the flowers. 😂😂

ATCs are super fun to make and with these Petite Petals, you can easily create some very special floral ones.  I encourage you to pop over to the shop and purchase this super versatile die set.

Saturday Showcase - AALL & Create Blossomed Numbers

Hi there.  It is Cec here to bring you the Saturday Showcase this week.  When you have been checking out all the wonderful new products that are coming to The Funkie Junkie Boutique you will notice that the shop will be carrying some of the AALL & Create line of stamps so since I have a couple of them I thought I would show you what a treat you are in for.  I have made a canvas using the Blossomed Numbers stamp set.

The AALL & Create stamps are clear stamps made of photopolymer and this one is an A4 size - that is one big stamp 8.27" × 11.69" - but it has two distinct images so the first thing I did was cut them apart to make them a little easier to use.

I would recommend that you condition your AALL & Create stamps before you use them for the first time.  I did not do that with one of the pieces and didn't get as great an image as I wanted so I did the smaller section (the one I used for this project) and was much happier with the result. I will follow up with the other image.

Also, in case you are more used to using red rubber stamps and Archival Ink like I was, don't panic when you notice that the Archival Ink tends to really stain the clear stamp but it doesn't harm it.  Just make sure you have some stamp cleaner available to clean your stamps.

OK, so now that the technical stuff is out of the way, here is how to create this canvas:

  • Stamp the smaller image on a piece of good tissue paper (I used Memento Tuxedo Black to ink it this time)

  • Crumple up some inexpensive (a.k.a. cheap) tissue (Dollarama), flatten it back out and glue to the canvas
  • Tear the tissue around the image and glue on next
  • Use Texture Paste (Ranger) through a Checkered Dots stencil (Dylusions) to add texture on opposite corners
  • Cover the canvas top and sides with White Gesso (Dina Wakley)

  • Paint the canvas completely with Lime Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley)
  • Add a few second generation stamp markings using Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger)
  • and a number stamp from the Ultimate Grunge set (Tim Holtz)
  • Use a scruffy paint brush to add Evergreen and Peacock Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) randomly
  • Add more marks with Peat Moss Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) and a Bubbles stencil (Tim Holtz)

  • Use Jet Black Archival Ink to stamp the flower portion of the stamp twice onto card stock

  • Ink both flower images with Scattered Straw, Wild Honey and Spiced Marmalade Distress Ink (Tim Holtz)
  • Go back and add some Fired Brick DI (not shown in process photo)
  • Fussy cut both flowers

  • Using a Micron Pigma Pen and the Dylusions stencil, draw some circles on card stock and give them some markings
  • Ink the circles with Scattered Straw and Wild Honey DI and then fussy cut them
  • Ink some card stock with Forest Moss DI and then cut numbers using an Alphanumeric Die Set (Tim Holtz)
  • Use some Wild Honey DI to ink a piece of drywall mesh tape
  • Create computer-generated text for a sentiment and ink the pieces with Wild Honey and Fired Brick DI
  • Add some lengths of raffia on top of the stem area of the stamped image
  • Add both flowers popping each of them up with some dimensional foam
If you want to play with these great stamps run over to the shop and get your pre-order in and you should be ready to go soon since February is almost over.

Saturday Showcase - Tim Holtz Distress Inks, Dies & Stencils

It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase this week and I have made a very shabby tag to share with you - something bright and cheerful since winter has set in.

Like many of you I am waiting for all the new products from Creativation to arrive in the shop so I decided to focus on items we all need or certainly should have in our craft supplies.  I would call inks, stencils and dies staples and most of them are usually available in the shop at all times - if not the ones I used from Tim Holtz but alternatives for sure.

I didn't take process photos at every step but here is how to create this tag:
  • Cover the tag with White Gesso

  • Using a dry brush add a coat of Blushing Acrylic Paint  Note:  I used the paint because it was on my desk but afterwards I remembered that I had some Abandoned Coral Distress Paint and could have used that as it fit in my colour palette - next time.

  • Use a palette knife to add Texture Paste through the Crossed stencil in random areas
  • Once the texture paste is dry, spray the tag with Worn Lipstick, Abandoned Coral and Scattered Straw Distress Spray Stain along with a little White Linen Spray Ink
  • Replace the stencil and use a wet towel to remove some of the colour from the stenciled areas

  • Cut the small butterfly from the Tattered Butterfly die and ink it with Worn Lipstick, Abandoned Coral and Scattered Straw Distress Ink
  • Add the body to the butterfly and then add some adhesive pearls on top of the body
  • Cut a couple flourishes and leaf branches from the Garden Greens die

Now it is time to assemble the tag.

  • Start by gluing the flourishes in place
  • Build the floral bouquet in the centre - I used flowers from my stash adding stamens to single layer petals in a couple cases
  • Tuck some tulle and the leaf branches in and around the flowers
  • Add the butterfly popping it up with some dimensional foam that was coloured around the edge using a marker to make it blend in
  • Add some dyed seam binding and crochet ribbon to the top  Note:  The seam binding I used came tied to a package from The Funkie Junkie Boutique so I don't know what colour ink was used to dye it but seam binding is a definite must have in your supplies because you can use any of your inks to change the colour to coordinate with your project

So while you anxiously await the new products, I would encourage you to do an inventory of your must have supplies and add the missing ones to your shopping list.  It would not be fun to get a new stamp for example and start to make something special only to discover that you have run out of a product that would make the difference in your desired outcome.  While you are at it, don't forget to stock up on adhesives and tools.

Saturday Showcase - Dina Wakley Scribble Sticks

It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase this time.  I am going to share a couple of projects I made with the Scribble Sticks from Dina Wakley.

The Scribble Sticks are the shape of crayons you used as a kid but don't have any wax in them, which is the part I love the most.  They react with water, are highly pigmented and can be used in a variety of ways.  There are three sets and the colours are the same as the Dina Wakley paints.

For my first project, I made a tag.

I started with a 4" x 8" tag that I cut from mat board because I needed something that would stand up to wet media and didn't have any of the many options available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique that are perfect for this type of project.

Some chipboard honeycomb bits that my husband cut for me on the laser cutter were added next and then both sides of the tag were covered with White Gesso (Dina Wakley).

Next I dry brushed some Lime Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) over both sides of the tag.  I used a Mini Mister (Tim Holtz) to spritz the front with water and let it run.

I used the Lime and Olive sticks to scribble on the tag in random areas (I added some Peacock but forgot to include it in the photo).  To blend the colour I dipped a paint brush in water and went over the scribbles.

To add more colour, I dropped water in a few spots on the tag and dipped the Evergreen stick in the puddles until I got the amount of colour I wanted and then moved the tag around to let it run.

I continued to drip colour on the tag alternating it with bits of White Gesso rubbed on with my finger until I was happy with the background.

Some Magenta was scribbled through a Polka Dotty stencil (Wendy Vecchi) on the top right and bottom left corners and then leaving the stencil in place, I blended it with water.  I found it bled a bit so while it was still wet, I gently patted it with some paper toweling and quite liked the result.

I added some additional stenciling with a Burlap Stencil (Tim Holtz) and Pink Peony Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).  Next came some stamping with Orange Blossom Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) and a star in a circle stamp (Tim Holtz).  I found these elements a bit dark so I knocked them back with some watered down White Gesso rubbed on with my finger and then I stamped some Text from the Entomology set (Tim Holtz) and Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).  Some splatters of white paint were also added.

The medium flower from the Fancy Florals set (Dylusions) was stamped onto watercolour card stock with Versamark (Tsukineko) and heat embossed with clear embossing powder (Ranger).  I coloured all three flowers (the third one was out of camera range) with the Magenta stick.  This time I dipped my paint brush in water and then rubbed it against the bottom of the stick to pick up some colour before I applied it to the card stock.  I went back as many times as needed to add some shading.  I also made sure I coloured outside the lines so I could see where to fussy cut - any other time I would be making sure I didn't go outside the lines.

To make the topper, I dyed some seam binding with the Evergreen stick by dripping water about the size of a quarter onto my kraft mat and then dipping the end of the stick in it.  Note: Because the end of the stick softens in the water be sure to set it down where the end can hang over the edge until it dries so you don't lose any pigment by letting it rub up against something.

The sentiment words are stickers from the Big Chat collection (Tim Holtz) and they have been added to strips of card stock painted with the Evergreen stick.  One flower was adhered with Scor Tape and the other two with dimensional foam dots.

For my second project, I made an art journal page.

I started creating the background by mixing the sticks in little puddles of water and then dripping them on the substrate using a pipette.  To control the flow of the colour I used the end of the pipette to move it around rather than picking the sheet up because I didn't want long runs of colour.

I added some stenciling with a Harlequin Stencil (Tim Holtz) and Deep Purple Archival Ink (Ranger) as well as the Dots and Stripes Borders Stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Forget-Me-Not Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).  Then I took a brayer and rolled a thin coat of White Gesso over the whole page.

I used the Elephant stick to add some Asemic writing and went over it with a barely damp paint brush.

I hand cut some hearts from watercolour card stock and painted them with the Magenta and Blackberry sticks using them on their own as well as mixed together.  When they dried I added wiggly borders with a fine Pigma Micron pen (Sakura).

The next step was to stamp each heart with text from the Entomology set using Watering Can Archival Ink.  That was followed by stenciling using the Checkmate Stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Twisted Citron Distress Ink (Tim Holtz, the Dots and Stripes Borders Stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Picked Raspberry DI and finally the Bubble Stencil (Tim Holtz) and Picket Fence DI.

I painted some punched flowers with the Cheddar stick and added spiral centres with a Purple Glaze Pen (Sakura).  The hearts were adhered to the page using Scor Tape and the flowers were added with dimensional foam.  Finally I added a sentiment of words from the Big Chat sticker collection mounted on top of card stock painted with the Evergreen stick.

Dina says that the Scribble Sticks can be used on top of her paints so I painted a little manilla tag from the office supplies store with some of her Lime Acrylic Paint and then added marks.  I found that a barely damp paint brush was the best way to blend the marks but keep them distinct.  If you have too much water the pigment moves too much.

I also tested the bright coloured sticks on Kraft card stock and found the colours stayed lovely and vibrant.  I really should have tried to see what happens on black card stock.

I hope you will give these a try.  I love them and my very artistic Granddaughter saw them and tried to talk me out of them because she thought they were fabulous - I prevailed and they are still in my craft stash and not in hers.
