Saturday Showcase - Dina Wakley Acrylic Paints

Hello. It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase this time. I am going to share how I made the whimsical little canvas for the Put A Good Word In challenge that began on January 6th.

My photos are not fabulous because it is winter here and the days have been cloudy for the most part, which doesn't help when my only natural light comes from a window facing the brick wall of my neighbour's house. And as usual, I got engrossed in creating and forgot to take a few photos along the way. I know you all have experienced much of the same so I know you will forgive me.

  • Cover a 6" square canvas panel with White Gesso (Dina Wakley)
  • Paint the top half with a mixture of Turquoise and Lapis Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) along with a bit of White Gesso
  • While the paint is wet, dab it with a rag to eliminate any obvious brush strokes
  • Paint underneath the blue with a mixture of Lime and Evergreen Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley)
  • Paint the bottom with a mixture of Elephant and Umber Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) along with a bit of White Gesso
  • Using Olive Archival Ink (Ranger) and Fern Green Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) stamp some greenery (I used an old set from my stash)
  • Cut more greens using some green paper from the St. Nicholas paper pad (Graphic 45) and dies from the Garden Greens and Wildflower Stems 2 sets (Tim Holtz) and Petite Petals (Emily Tootle)
  • Ink the edges of the greens with Forest Moss Distress Ink (Tim Holtz) and add to the canvas
  • Paint the resin bicycle with Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) and then rub with Metallic Gold Wax Paste
  • Use Gel Medium to adhere the bicycle to the canvas
  • Adhere teeny stones at the base of the greenery to create a stone wall (I used some limestone screenings my husband had left from fixing the driveway pavers)
  • Cover a couple branches made from a cracker box with some Texture Paste (Ranger) and then paint with a mixture of Umber Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) and Melted Chocolate Acrylic Paint (Dylusions) and combine to make one more dense branch
  • Paint the leaves with Aloe Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley)
  • Use a tiny flower punch and some scrap card stock to make little flowers
  • Ink the flower edges with Worn Lipstick DI and add an adhesive Pearl to the centre before adding them to the branch
  • Punch more flowers from scraps of paper from the Bloom paper pad (Graphic 45)
  • Use Worn Lipstick, Wild Honey and Spiced Marmalade DI to ink the edges and then add adhesive pearls to the centres
  • Add the flowers to the bicycle basket using dimensional foam bits
  • Add a tiny bee and ladybug button by first clipping the shank off the back
  • Print the sentiment, cut apart and ink the edges with Frayed Burlap DI
  • Finally adhere a larger bit of gravel (my metaphorical obstacle)
Please remember that even with all the obstacles that are thrown in our way and we all know that this year has given us more than enough, life is still a beautiful ride. I hope you will agree because we all need to choose to be happy and positive so we can overcome those obstacles.

Saturday Showcase - Tim Holtz Distress Inks, Leaf Stamps and Leaf Dies

It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase this time. In keeping with the current challenge theme of Celebrate, I have used a variety of Tim Holtz products to create a fall themed birthday card to send to my Brother.

This time I wanted to show that even a very simply made card can be very effective and here is how I did it:

I started by making a 5" x 7" card blank from some cream card stock and then added a panel of white card stock that I cut 1/8" smaller on each side, distressed and then inked with some Gathered Twigs Distress Ink.

I cut another piece of white card stock 1/4" smaller on each side than the previous panel and used Versamark to stamp a number of leaves from the Nature's Wonder set randomly over the panel. Clear embossing powder was added and melted to create a resist where the leaves are.

The next step was to randomly ink over the panel with Crackling Campfire Distress Oxide, dry that layer and then ink over the remaining panel with Crackling Campfire Distress Ink. I used a dry rag to rub any ink off the leaves. The panel was distressed and added to the card

I used an old chicken wire stencil and some Crackling Campfire DI to stamp some random marks. I have a jar of Clear Rock Candy Distress Crackle that I have been hording so I dug that out and used a palette knife to add some randomly and then once the whole panel was dry, I distressed and inked the edges.

Next I cut a piece of card stock to make the narrow strip. I used some Texture Paste through as Woodgrain Stencil to cover the card stock and then painted it with Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley). Next I sprayed it with Gathered Twigs Distress Spray Stain and then inked the highlights with Gathered Twigs DI.

Now it was time make a pile of leaves using the Skeleton Leaves and Fall Foliage dies along with a die set called Hidden Leaves (Sophie Guilar). I cut the leaves from white card stock and then inked them with a variety of Distress Inks and Oxides - Gathered Twigs, Aged Mahogany, Crackling Campfire, Forest Moss, Frayed Burlap and Fired Brick Distress Ink and Scattered Straw and Crackling Campfire Distress Oxide. The two skeleton leaves were also coated with Chunky Rust Embossing Powder (Seth Apter) but I forgot to photo that step.

To assemble the card I added the woodgrain strip and then all the leaves. I cut a butterfly from some patterned paper and used a water brush to paint it with Crackling Campfire DI. Finally I created the word Celebrate on the computer and inked it with Gathered Twigs DI.

I hope you are inspired to dig out your ink pads, stamps and dies and create a simple card too.

Celebrate

Hi there, Cec here to bring you the new challenge. I am calling this one Celebrate and here is how I describe it: "Your challenge is to create a shabby chic or vintage project to celebrate someone or something special. Since celebrations are happy occasions, your project should be made with lots of happy, bright colours. Keep your dull or neutral colours to a minimum please because as winter approaches we will have lots of that naturally so your bright colours must be predominant."

The winner will earn a chance to be a Guest Designer at a future date here at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team.

The guidelines for entering are simple; create a new vintage or shabby chic project following the challenge theme, link it below to your post (not just your blog) and also include a link back to this challenge in your post. Saturday Showcase - Tim Holtz Speckled Egg

It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase this time. I received some of the Speckled Egg distress products recently and thought I would show you a few ways to use them.

Note: When I ordered the products the actual ink pads for both the Distress Ink and the Oxide were out of stock so I have made do with just the Reinkers.
I created the background for this card by putting some Distress Texture Paste Crackle (Tim Holtz) through a Brick stencil and then inking over it when it was dry with Pumice Stone Distress Ink (Tim Holtz). It warped a bit so I spritzed the back with water and put it under a load of heavy books to dry, which helped but didn't totally flatten it so I distressed the edges to hide the leftover problem a bit.

Next I stamped the large flower from the Blooming Field stamp set (AAll & Create) onto some white card stock twice using Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).
The next step was to paint the flowers with Speckled Egg Reinker, which I treated like watercolours by dropping some on my kraft sheet and adding some water. The centres were painted with Gathered Twigs and Scattered Straw Distress Ink using a Water Brush (Tim Holtz). Once they were dry, I fussy cut them.
The leaves were also stamped with Watering Can Archival Ink using stamps from a Heartfelt Creations set called Open Leaf that was once available in Linda's shop. The leaves were fussy cut and painted with Shabby Shutters and Forest Moss Distress Ink using a Water Brush (Tim Holtz).

The sentiment is computer generated and inked with some Pumice Stone DI. The card was easily assembled in layers using Scor Tape.
This card was created for my husband's birthday, which happens to be today. I started with the background by putting some of the Speckled Egg Oxide Reinker, along with Vintage Photo and Ground Espresso Oxide (Tim Holtz) on my kraft sheet, spritzing them with water and dragging some white card stock through the puddles.
Using Watering Can Archival Ink I added some stamping with stamps from both The Professor and Dapper sets (Tim Holtz). I outlined the panel with some hand drawn lines using a Micron Pigma Pen.
For the smaller panel, I dragged the card stock through some Vintage Photo and Ground Espresso Oxide puddled on my kraft sheet. Once it was dry I added some stenciling with a Harlequin stencil (Tim Holtz) and Watering Can Archival Ink.
Next it was time to create the embellishments. I cut the large gear from cracker box material using a die set that was gifted to me by the lovely Jenny Marples. Then I added some glue randomly on the gear and sprinkled playground sand over the glue to add some texture. Finally I painted it with a mixture of Umber, Tangerine and Peacock Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley).
I stamped the main image from the Dapper set using Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger) and fussy cut it to separate the images. The hat band and bow tie were painted with Speckled Egg Distress Paint and both images were inked with some Vintage Photo Distress Ink (Tim Holtz).
The light bulb was stamped from The Professor set using Jet Black Archival Ink and then the bulb was inked with Wild Honey Distress Ink (Tim Holtz) before it was covered in Glossy Accents (Ranger). Once it was dry, the base of the bulb was coloured with a gold metallic Gelly Roll pen (Sakura).
To assemble the card I added the larger panel to a kraft card blank and topped it with the smaller panel. Brads were added to each corner and then I added the embellishments I prepared followed by a Big Chat sticker (Tim Holtz).

Finally I decided to make a very soft but structured collage on a canvas board.
I started by covering the canvas board with tissue paper (my go-to instant texture) and then added some Translucent Embossing Paste (Wendy Vecchi) through a Crossed stencil (Tim Holtz).
Next I added some watered-down Speckled Egg Distress Paint as a frame on the canvas. It seemed a bit dark so I used my ratty paint brush to pounce some White Gesso (Dina Wakley) over it to lighten it up.
The next step was to make the various elements. First I took a butterfly that my husband cut for me out of plain card stock and covered it with Distress Texture Paste Crackle (Tim Holtz) and then painted it with Speckled Egg Distress Paste to which I added a bit of Glazing Medium. Note: I put painters tape around my jars of medium to try and keep them from drying out and this time I accidentally ripped part of the label off the jar when I removed the tape - oops.

The body of the butterfly was created by coating a pen nib (Tim Holtz Idea-ology) with Espresso, Pitch Black and Copper Mixative Alcohol Ink (Tim Holtz).
The panel the butterfly sits on is a piece of card stock covered with a thick coat of White Gesso and before it completely dried I dragged a stylus through to create some texture. Once it was dry it was painted with Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley).
I made a couple stenciled pieces. The first was some tea dyed paper with Speckled Egg stenciling through a Patchwork Hex Layering Stencil (Tim Holtz).
The second was a piece of card stock painted with Speckled Egg Distress Paint and then stenciled with Vintage Photo Distress Ink through a Speckles stencil - how appropriate.
Some natural burlap was painted with Speckled Egg Distress Paint.
Then some seam binding was dyed with Speckled Egg Distress Reinker.
I created a few other elements - a strip of canvas with some stitching, a strip of Kraft Glassine with a rusted metal piece that was in my stash and another strip of Kraft Glassine with breads added to it. Finally I assembled the collage adding a strip of lace and also adding a button to the burlap. The Speckled Egg colour is soft and if I had used black or grey instead of the Vintage Photo shade, it would definitely have been reminiscent of robin eggs.

I hope you managed to stick with me for this super long post and I hope you got some inspiration along the way.

Saturday Showcase - Petite Petals Die by Emily Tootle for Sizzix

It is Cec here and I am presenting the Saturday Showcase today.  I received a couple of new die sets from Linda and I decided to use the Petite Petals set by Emily Tootle to create some Artist Trading Cards (ATCs).

For my substrates, I used three old playing cards.  Playing cards are the perfect size for an ATC - 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and they are a decent weight.  I started by gluing old book paper to both sides of each card.  I always glue one side first and trim the excess book paper away and then cover the second side.

I will show photos of the background for this first one and then describe how I created the others so this post isn't too long.

I started by covering both sides with a light coat of White Gesso (Dina Wakley) and then added some Thundercloud and Atlantis IZink Pigment Ink (Seth Apter).

Some stenciling was added using Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger) and a Reverse Chicken Wire stencil

More stenciling was added with a Checkmate stencil (Wendy Vecchi) and Cornflower Blue Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi).

Next I used a stencil from my stash and Distress Texture Paste Crackle (Tim Holtz) to add more interest. Originally I planned to make the emebellishments a different colour so when I chose the black and cream paper, I had to go back in and use a teeny paint brush with some Sand Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) to change the colour of the texture paste.

Here is how all the floral embellishments were created - more recycling. This time I grabbed the box where I keep all the leftover bits and pieces of patterned paper and used some of the dies from the set.

The black and cream paper for the Petite Petals on this first ATC is from a collection called Mon Amour (Graphic 45). I also added a Chitchat sticker that I inked with some Cornflower Blue Acrylic Ink.

For this ATC, I did not add any Gesso to the old book paper, I put a little Lemon, Tangerine and Sedona Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley) on my kraft sheet, watered it down and then dragged the card through the paint puddles. One side was dried with my heat gun before I repeated the process for the second side.

Next I added some Olive Drab IZink Pigment Ink (Seth Apter to each side. When everything was dry, I loosely dry brushed some Aloe Acrylic Paint on each side. Finally I used Coffee Archival Ink (Ranger) to add some random stenciling through the Burlap stencil (Tim Holtz) and to ink the edges of the card.

Finally I added the Petite Petals from the photo above and another Chitchat sticker. The sticker and the flowers were inked with Wild Honey Distress Ink.

For my final ATC I covered both sides with some White Gesso and then painted it with Carnation Acrylic Paint (Dina Wakley). Thistle Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) was used with an old cross hatch stamp wo add some markings. This was followed with some of the Distress Texture Paste Crackle through the Checkmate stencil. Watering Can Archival Ink (Wendy Vecchi) and a Harlequin stencil (Tim Holtz) were used to add more markings.

The stem was cut from a scrap of grey card stock using the Garden Greens die (Tim Holtz). The Petite Petals flowers were cut from a Maja Designs collection called Vintage Autumn Basics and were inked with Thistle Archival Ink, which was also used to ink the edges of the Chitchat sticker and the card itself. The leaves were inked with Peeled Pain Distress Ink (Tim Holtz).

Note to self:  Try aiming for the centre when you add the centres to the flowers. 😂😂

ATCs are super fun to make and with these Petite Petals, you can easily create some very special floral ones.  I encourage you to pop over to the shop and purchase this super versatile die set.
