Saturday Showcase - Prima Marketing Pretty Mosaic

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you. This time I've been combining the Prima Marketing 'Pretty Mosaic' Collection with a number of other ranges to create some ideas for pretty mixed media cards.

The base for each of the cards started with a piece of 12 x 12 inch card from the largest of the paper pads. This was altered by pressing it into a Gel Press plate to pick up the remains of some Dina Wakley Media Paint - you can see below how the addition of some shades of gold, red and orange gave the original sheet (shown underneath) a warmer glow. The card was then trimmed into four equal pieces each measuring 5 3/4 inches.

Here's the first of the cards;

The first base was embossed using the Tim Holtz 3D Embossing Folder 'Roses' and I painted over the raised areas with Buff and Gilt Paint from the Dina Wakley Media range.

There's a beautiful little silicone mould set in the Pretty Mosaic range that I used to create two paper clay butterflies. These were painted, first with diluted Fuchsia Paint then dry brushed with White Gesso to highlight the pattern. To give it a more vintage look I dripped a little Lemonade Alcohol Ink over the surface and dabbed it dry to remove any excess.

To make a base and plaque for the sentiment I cut a 6 inch piece from another sheet in the 'Pretty Mosaic' paper pad and edged it with Gilt Paint. The plaque was cut from a smaller piece of the same design using Eileen Hull's 'Gift Box' Die and was also edged with the Gilt Paint.

To enhance the embossed roses I added a stem of 'Susie' Pretty Mosaic flowers, twisting them into shape and gluing them in place. To secure them further I added some hand stitching with little beads.

To finish the card I stuck the smaller embossed layer to the larger Gilt edged piece, glued the butterflies in place and added the plaque, stamped with a sentiment from Wendy Vecchi's 'Funky Flower Art' stamp set. This was then mounted onto a 6 inch square white card blank.

Now for the second card;

I stencilled over the base using Tim Holtz 'Roses' Layering Stencil with Opaque Matte Texture Paste, painting over the top with Heather Paint.

More of the Heather Paint was used to colour seam binding that was then threaded through some Venise Lace from Linda's store. I stuck this to one side of the base using double sided adhesive tape on the reverse side.

To create the floral bouquet I stamped the roses from Wendy Vecchi's 'Rosy Art' stamp set with Plum Archival Ink twice, painting both sets with Heather and a mix of Evergreen and Eggplant Paint. This was also repeated on a coordinating Mat Mini. After cutting and shaping the leaves and flowers I layered them together, adding a little hot glue in between the leaves to give them more dimension and stability.

To contrast with the darker, smaller leaves in the bouquet I stamped spiky leaves from Wendy Vecchi's 'Funky Flower Art' repeatedly with Plum Archival Ink, painting them with a mix of Lime and Gilt Paint. Once cut out these were also shaped before being glued beneath the roses and smaller leaves.

To finish the card I stuck the stencilled smaller piece to a 6 inch piece of card taken from another of the designs in the 'Pretty Mosaic' paper pad. With the bouquet glued in place I added a bow of seam binding made with the offcut from the lace border and stamped a sentiment from Wendy Vecchi's 'Funky Flower Art' stamp set onto a small tag cut from another of the sheets in the paper pad. As for the first card I mounted the finished layers onto a 6 inch square white card blank.

And here's the third and final card;

As for the previous two I started by altering the base layer, this time by stamping and embossing into the centre Wendy Vecchi's 'Vintage Mesh' background stamp using gold embossing powder. Once heat set I cut a 3 1/4 inch square out of the centre.

Taking a 6 inch square piece from a coordinating sheet from the 'Pretty Mosaic' paper pad I cut a 4 inch square out of the centre. To disguise any unpatterned areas around the edges of each piece I stamped them with the lacy flower from Wendy Vecchi's 'Friends & Art' stamp set using Plum Archival Ink.

After sticking the two outer squares together I layered the smaller squares with pieces of scrap paper, a die cut piece of 'Crochet' lace and an offcut of paper from the 'Pretty Mosaic' paper pad.

To decorate the paper collage I stamped the lacy flower from Wendy Vecchi's 'Friends & Art' stamp set on to card twice. These were painted with a combination of Olive and Eggplant Paint and White Gesso before being cut out and layered together with hot glue. I also painted a flower head using a Mat Mini from the coordinating set, adding dots of Wendy Vecchi's 'Sunflower' Liquid Pearls onto the centre of each tiny flower.

To finish I added the flower to the centre of the paper collage, stamped a sentiment from Wendy Vecchi's 'Funky Floral Art' stamp set onto scraps of 'Pretty Mosaic' card and mounted it on top of the flower. As with the previous cards I adhered this to a 6 inch square white card blank.

Saturday Showcase - Eileen Hull Designs Treasure Box and Molten Dimension Embossing Powders

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you and kick start your creative weekend. Today's project ties in with the current challenge theme 'Treats Not Tricks!'; I've created a gift box using Eileen Hull's 'Treasure Box' Die from Sizzix with her Molten Dimensions Embossing Powders from Emerald Creek Craft Supplies.

Here's how the box came together; after die cutting the two lids from white matboard I went on to cut four lid sides to make a box that's thinner than the regular sized Treasure Box. These pieces were all embossed with Tim Holtz 3D Texture Fades Embossing Folder - Botanical.

All the embossed die cut pieces were then heat embossed using Eileen Hull's 'Golden Rod' Molten Dimensions Embossing Powders. Make sure to tap off as much of the excess powder before heating as the finished results are much better if the embossing is uneven. You'll also see I didn't bother to emboss the tabs as these are never seen once the box has been assembled.

Another reason for omitting to emboss the tabs on the lid sections was to make it easier to remove a layer of matboard from each as this removes some of the bulk where the pieces overlap.

After using strong wet glue to stick the lid sides together, the top piece was added to create one side of the box. This process was repeated with the remaining die cut pieces to form two lids.

Once the glue had dried the embossed surfaces on both lids were covered with Dina Wakley Media 'Turquoise' Acrylic Paint.

Before the paint had chance to dry I wiped away the excess with a damp piece of tissue to reveal a lot of the embossed surface underneath. This helped to give the finished box a look of verdigris metal. The edges of each lid were matched to the embossing by adding a little Dina Wakley Media 'Ancient' Acrylic Paint. You can age the edges of the box further by dabbing some brown Archival Ink over them.

Linda has a lot of fantastic metal pieces that work perfectly when constructing boxes, including hinges, corners, handles, latches and feet. I used two Bronze Tone Hinges with some coordinating Long Fasteners to secure the back of the lid pieces together.

On the front I added a Bronze Tone Mini Box Handle again with coordinating Long Fasteners - whilst this is merely a decorative element it also helps to add a little weight to the top of the box and hold it in place.

To cover the insides of the box I die cut pieces of paper from the Stamperia 'Oriental Garden' Paper Pack and glued them in place after inking the edges with the brown ink.

To finish the box a few elements were added to the lid to form a mini collage. These included a die cut Trinket Frame from Metallic Kraft Stock (sanded to give a worn look and with Hardware Heads in the corners) some off cuts of paper, folded, layered and hand stitched together, flowers die cut from the Oriental Garden Paper and a Filigree Metal Butterfly, altered with pens to add some colour. Here are a few close ups to show the details;

Saturday Showcase - Tim Holtz Metallic Confections 3D Impresslits Leaf Cards

Hi everyone and welcome to another Saturday Showcase, the Design Team's chance to share tutorials and products available from The Funkie Junkie Boutique with you and kick start your creative weekend. This time the focus falls on Tim Holtz 3D Impresslits 'Leaf' Embossing Folder which embosses and cuts the most beautiful leaves. By teaming it with his Kraft Stock 'Metallic Confections' and adding a little painterly magic they make beautiful aged leaves that are perfect for adorning cards and more. Here's an example of the finish you can achieve (before and after);

(click on any of the images to get a closer look)

To start grab a sheet of each colour Kraft Stock in the Metallic Confections pack - they come in all of these delicious shades;

Cut a piece of Kraft Stock large enough to fit over the leaves in the 3D Impresslits Embossing Folder and place it shiny side down on the cutting side.

Run through your embossing machine following the layering instructions on the 3D Impresslits packaging. Release your leaves from the folder and marvel at the incredible intricacy of the embossed design and die cutting.

Now cover the leaves in a thin layer of Dina Wakley Media 'Black' Acrylic Paint using a small paint brush.

When the paint is partially dry rub with a soft cloth to remove the excess. The longer you leave the paint the less you will remove so try experimenting to get the look you are happy with.

Once the paint has been removed you may find you have slightly flattened your leaves. This is easily rectified by replacing them in the Embossing Folder and pressing down gently on the reverse side with your thumbs to re-emboss them.

You will now have beautiful aged leaves ready to use on your projects. Here's how the other colours look when you use the same process on them.

Now to add them to a project (or two). For this first card I added some of the leaves to a plain white background embossed with the 3D Embossing Folder 'Elegant'. It's a good idea to add dimensional foam tape to the underside of the leaves to support them and prevent flattening the design when posting. You'll see below that I also added some twisted wire tendrils, a few self adhesive gems, two Tim Holtz Ideaology Adornments Butterflies (altered with white paint in the same way as the leaves were done) and a sentiment from Tim's 'Life Quotes' stamp set.

Here are a couple of close ups;

The second card picks up on the current challenge theme 'It's Heating Up!' incorporating leaves with warmer colours over a background smooshed with Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint (Buff and Sand) Tim Holtz 'Architecture' stamp and a 'Tattered Butterfly' die cut. There is an Ideaology Clockhand in the centre of the butterfly and a Small Talk sentiment, and to finish the card I mounted it on more Metallic Kraft Stock (this time in Copper).

Here are a couple of close ups of this one;
