Lanzado como doble CD por Niji Entertainment Group, unos pocos meses después del fallecimiento de Ronnie James Dio, el álbum recoge sendas actuaciones de la banda en el festival "Monsters of Rock", en Donington, Inglaterra, en 1983 y 1987, shows pertenecientes a las giras de "Holy Diver" y "Dream Evil" respectivamente. El 16 de mayo de 2010, Ronnie James Dio murió de cáncer de estómago en el Centro Médico de Texas en Houston, Texas, a la edad de 67 años. En 2011, se anunció que los miembros supervivientes de la formación final de Dio se embarcarían en un proyecto con el ex líder de Judas Priest, Tim “Ripper” Owens, bajo el sobrenombre de DIO Disciples. Master of the Moon es un álbum de estudio de Dio. Fue lanzado el 7 de septiembre de 2004 bajo el sello Sanctuary Records en América.
Master of the Moon marca el retorno del guitarrista Craig Goldy, quien también participó en los discos Dream Evil (1987) y Magica (2000). También participan de la grabación del disco el bajista Jeff Pilson, el baterista Simon Wright y el teclista Scott Warren.
Es el último trabajo de estudio de la banda, después de este, en 2006, su cantante, Ronnie James Dio, se unió a Heaven And Hell, agrupación conformada por la alineación de Black Sabbath de la era con Ronnie. Posteriormente, el vocalista falleció en 2010 víctima de un cáncer de estómago, dejando disuelta toda esperanza del retorno de la banda Dio.
