flashback on Summer with Anemones

 

 

 

While a beautiful day was predicted for today,

it is in fact a cold, grey and dreary day instead.

That is nothing new. The weather in our little corner

of Belgium is often completely different from

elsewhere in the country. Time to go through

some pictures from last Summer I thought.

 

Terwijl een mooie dag voorspeld werd voor vandaag,

is het een koude, gure, grijze dag. Niets nieuws,

het gebeurt wel vaker dat het weer in ons hoekje

van België helemaal anders is dan in de rest van het land.

Tijd om eens terug te blikken op de zomer met wat foto's dacht ik zo.

 

 

 

 The Anemones really bloomed beautifully all summer.

 

De Anemonen gaven echt het beste van zichzelf heel de zomer.

 

 

 

I've been working in the container garden all last week.

Rearranging things and cutting the stems from the faded Anemones.

During the recent stormy weather those pots had fallen over

because of the long stems catching the wind. It's quite a different

cleaned up look our terrace has now, ready for winter to come.

 

De laatste week heb ik de pottentuin opgekuist en gereorganiseerd. 

Ook de lange stelen van de nu uitgebloeide Anemonen werden gekortwiekt.

Tijdens de stormachtige dagen van vorige week werden

die potten genadeloos tegen de grond gesmakt door de vele wind.

Ook het terras zelf werd grondig aangepakt en heeft nu een heel

nieuwe look gekregen, klaar voor de winter.

 

 

But let's enjoy the Anemones from last Summer first ;)

 

Maar eerst nog even nagenieten van de Anemonen van vorige zomer ;)

 

 

 

All of the above pictures were taken on the same day,

somewhere in August,

on a grey Summer day(as we got many last Summer).

But even that can be a good thing for photographing.

I took all the pictures so the background was

only the sky and nothing else.

Kinda like these 'different' pics.

What do you think?

It doesn't always have to be a blue sky ;)

 

Alle bovenstaande foto's nam ik op dezelfde dag,

ergens in Augustus,

op een grijze zomerdag(zoals we er zoveel hadden deze zomer).

Maar ook dat kan interessant zijn bij het fotograferen.

Ik nam alle foto's vanuit kikvorsperspectief

zodat alleen de lucht als achtergrond te zien was,

niets anders. Wat vinden jullie ervan?

Het moet niet altijd een blauwe lucht zijn ;)

GBBD August: End of summer

 

 

 This month has felt more like Autumn instead of Summer and with

all the rain and wind we've been having, flowers have had it even

harder than they already do in our garden. The roses never lasted

very long and  Dahlia's seem to be blooming one flower at the time.

The Japanese Anemones on the other hand have been blooming

for over a month now and with two containers of them on either

side of the bench right in front of the kitchen window, I get the

most out of them and enjoy their lovely sight. The white Echinacea

may not be as resilient to the wind we've had but is also still a pretty sight,

also in the container garden though, nothing blooming in the garden

at the moment. Hydrangeas have had it hard this year and are really not looking

their best. Geranium Endressii has now gone into rest. I cut it back a bit

and new fresh foliage is already starting to appear. Looking good!

So sorry I can't show you more different flowers, I really wish I could,

I really tried but the Cosmos for example has grown so high but without

flowering. I tried to find the reason for it but couldn't find the answer.

With all the wind and rain, it's now looking even more miserable,

certainly not photoworthy, so you see, I do try but this year has been

so extreme and crazy, it didn't have a great effect on the garden.

What a difference a day makes

Een verschil van dag en nacht.

 

Talking about the Hydrangeas. They've had to endure a lot already this year as I already told you in my latest post but today gave them their final blow. After the Autumn like weather we've been having, a heatwave passed by today. This evening we already got the wind, lightning, thunder and rain that comes with the heat but by then the damage had already been done and there was no turning back. Still I tried to see the beauty of it. Even fading flowers can be pretty.

 

Ik heb het over de Hortensia's. Ze hadden het dit jaar al behoorlijk hard te verduren maar vandaag kregen ze echt hun genadeslag. Na al het herfstig weer van de laatste tijd, kregen we vandaag een hittegolf over ons heen. Deze avond kregen we dan ook de wind, bliksem, donder en regen die altijd met zo'n hittegolf gepaard gaan maar toen was de schade al aangericht en er is geen weg terug. Toch heb ik geprobeerd de schoonheid ervan te zien. Ook verwelkt kunnen bloemen nog mooi zijn.

Deze bloem ontsprong de dans, verstopt onder bladeren.

 

 

Roses on the other hand are sunlovers. This is Burgundy Ice, first blooms.

 

Rozen daarentegen houden van de zon. Dit is Burgundy Ice, de eerste bloemen.

GBBD July 2014: month of extremes

This month started out with dry and hot weather.

A lot of watering was needed to keep plants in the garden

and in the container garden going.

Hydrangeas suffered most. A lot of flowerleaves got burnt.

Eventually, I decided to just pinch out those flowers

and that worked really well to make the Hydrangeas

more presentable again. Only the white Hydrangea flowers were

too much burnt to be able to be 'saved' still.

 

 

 

 

 

 After that first week of heat came two weeks of the other extreme,

a lot of wind and rain that is, blowing over plants in containers

and turning both garden and container garden into a mess.

 

 

I saw things from the positive side and cut

the broken Hydrangea branches to make the largest bouquet

of Hydrangea flowers I have ever had in the house.

 

 

 

Rain on petals can be pretty.

 

 

Today, there was no rain and a blue sky appeared.

Time to show what's blooming now.

Nothing to show for the garden but as I started

taking pictures in the container garden, I was amazed

at how many blooms there still were, even after

the devastation from the last two weeks.

No roses blooming right now but there are Hydrangea flowers,

some already fading, others just starting to show colour.

 

 

 

 

 

Hydrangeas had a lot to endure already this year.

Holes in leaves from large hail,

extreme heat and extreme wind and rain.

Still, such wonderful plants I wouldn't want to miss.

 

 

The white Echinacea just started to bloom.

 

 

 

Such a simple but beautiful flower. Really love it!

 

 

And sooner than ever before, Japanese Anemones are blooming already.

 

 

All in all, Hydrangeas take the lead this month

and have gone from starting to bloom to starting

to fade in a short time this year.

And with Echinacea and Anemones,

simple flowers have started to steal the show

on the terrace as well.

Plans and tricks

Dag iedereen, dankjewel aan allen die op mijn vorige post reageerden en voor de vele tips, dat vond ik echt heel fijn. En eerlijk gezegd denk ik dat ik nooit helemaal met tuinieren zal kunnen stoppen. Vandaag gaf ik de planten in de tuin gewoon weer water, net als gisteren trouwens.... Intussen heb ik de triestigst uitziende Hortensia's teruggeknipt, en ook de Viburnum (sneeuwballenboom) nog wat meer bijgeknipt zodat de hortensia's in de buurt wat meer licht krijgen. Een mens blijft vanalles proberen. Zo zie je maar, toch alweer ferm in de tuin aan het werk geweest. En ik heb nog meer plannen: De Hortensia's in pot op het terras hebben op warme zonnige dagen erg te lijden (al zien ze er dan toch altijd nog veel beter uit dan die in de volle grond) en dus heb ik het volgende bedacht: Ik zet enkele van die hortensia's gewoon met pot en al in de border. Meteen twee vliegen in één klap: Hebben ze niet zoveel last meer van de zon en ook geen nadeel van de slechte grond in de tuin want ze blijven in hun pot staan. Het water geven zal er niet op verminderen maar dat is niet het voornaamste probleem. Straks eindig ik nog met een pottenborder ;)

 

Hi everyone, thank you so much for the comments on my previous blogpost. Really felt good! And actually, I don't think I will ever be able to stop gardening all together. And I did water the Hydrangeas in the garden again today, and yesterday as well.... I cut back some Hydrangeas as well, the saddest looking ones. Also cut back the Viburnum a bit so the Hydrangeas near it can have more light. See, I've been doing quite some work in the garden already afterall.... And I have more plans: I do have Hydrangeas in containers as well, all grew them myself from cuttings, and those suffer a lot from the sun and heat on warmer days, so I'm planning on moving some containers with Hydrangeas into the border without putting the plants into the soil but leaving them in the container they're in. Think that could be a solution both ways, not too much sun and no poor looking Hydrangeas in the border due to the soil. Of course the watering won't be any less but that's not the main problem here. Who knows, in the end I may end up with a container border ;)

 

 

De tuin in de schaduw geeft toch wel een mooie donkere achtergrond bij het fotograferen

waar ik wel van houd. We bekijken het van de zonnige kant ;)

 

That garden in the shadow does provide a nice natural dark background which I like.

En nog zo'n trucje, naast 'alles close up' in plaats van 'op zijn geheel',

zet een bloem half op de foto en ze ziet er ineens zoveel groter uit ;)

En had ik al gezegd dat ik niet zonder de zoom om mijn fototoestel zou kunnen? ;)

 

Another trick, apart from taking close up pictures instead of the total image,

put half of a flower on the picture and it'll look twice as big as it actually is ;)

And did I mention already I couldn't do without the zoom on my camera? ;)
