Laatste week voor Kerst/ Last week before Christmas

Ongelooflijk dat het al de laatste week voor Kerst is. Kerst komt dit jaar precies te vroeg, ben er nog helemaal niet klaar voor. Vorige week was er wel even een sprankel kerstgevoel toen het enkele nachten vroor en de wereld 's morgens een wit randje had. Mooi vind ik dat altijd.

 

Unbelievable Christmas is already around the corner, only one week left!

I don't feel ready for Christmas yet, as if it comes too soon this year.

Last week, there was a bit of a Christmas feeling after we had some nights with

temps blow zero which gave the world a white edging in the mornings.

Always such a pretty view.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Deze week ontbreekt dat witte randje en weg kerstgevoel, al steek ik dan de lichtjes in de kerstboom (boompje eigenlijk) buiten aan, en al staat de Amaryllis bijna in bloei. Ik hoop hier binnenkort foto's van een bloeiende Amaryllis te kunnen delen maar voorlopig blijven de stelen groeien en laten de knoppen nog niets van de bloemkleur(die wit zou moeten zijn) zien. De Amaryllis is er ook nog niet klaar voor denk ik, voor Kerst.

 

This week there hasn't been a white edging though and with it all Christmas feeling disappeared as well, even if I do turn on the lights in the Christmas tree outside. And even if the Amaryllis is almost blooming. The stems keep growing but the flowerbuds are tightly closed and don't want to reveal any colour(should be white btw). It seems as if Amaryllis isn't ready for Christmas yet either.

 

 

 

 

Niet zo voor de kerstroos. Die staat wél in bloei, helemaal klaar voor Kerst.

 

Not so for the Christmas Rose, blooming and ready for Christmas.

 

 

 

  Toch al een klein hoekje Kerst in de woonkamer.

En deze brownies (recept) hebben ook wel iets kerstigs, met cranberries erin verwerkt én op een mooi wit papieren kantje.

 

These brownies (recipe) have something Christmassy about them as well, with the added cranberries and presented on a white lacey paper.

 

 

Geen idee of ik nog wat zal bloggen voor Kerst dus vandaar nu al mijn allerbeste wensen voor een mooie en vreugdevolle kerstperiode voor iedereen

Fall

 

 

 

Fall has really arrived here today

and is not planning on leaving any time soon

if we can believe the weatherman.

So I started to add some fall decorations in the house

like this this little pumpkin I crocheted last year.

And I have been baking several apple cakes

and banana breads over the last weeks,

didn't take any pictures though.

I do want to share the recipes I use with you nevertheless.

The apple cake comes from the book 'Ons kookboek',

the old version, and is exactly the same as this recipe

I found on the intermet, it's in Dutch I'm afraid.

If you'd like an English translation just let me know.

Next on my to bake list? An American apple pie!

Who knows, maybe I will take pictures this time....

 

De herfst is hier echt wel gearriveerd vandaag

en is niet van plan vlug weer te vertrekken

als we de weerman mogen geloven.

Daarom ben ik begonnen met wat herfsttouches aan te brengen in huis

zoals dit kleine pompoentje dat ik vorig jaar haakte.

De laatste weken heb ik ook al verschillende appelcakes

en bananenbroden gebakken die er in deze periode van het jaar

gewoon bij horen. Geen foto's ervan echter.

Wel deel ik graag de recepten met jullie. Wie weet komen ze ooit van pas.

Als je ook het bananenbrood wil bakken dat ik altijd bak,

hier vind je het recept, een super recept als je 't mij vraagt.

De appelcake komt uit het boek 'Ons kookboek', de oude versie ervan,

en is precies hetzelfde als dit recept dat ik op internet tegen kwam.

Volgende op mijn te bakken lijst is een Amerikaanse appelpie!

Philadelphus Coronarius

 

 

 

Ook wel Boerenjasmijn genoemd en nu, eind juni, volop in bloei. Net als met alle andere planten is dat dit jaar veel later dan normaal. In mijn vorige post vertelde ik al hoe ik een paar takken van de Boerenjasmijn binnen zette. Die lange takken heb ik uiteindelijk toch maar wat ingekort om een mooi boeket ervan op de tafel in de woonkamer te kunnen zetten én te genieten van de heerlijke geur tijdens het computeren ;) En nu vond  ik dat ik niets anders kon dan hier toch wat foto's te plaatsen van dit gerestylde boeket.

Also known as 'Sweet mock orange' or 'English Dogwood' and now flowering abundantly, at the very end of june, much later than normal, as is the case for all plants this year. In my previous post I told you how I put some Mock Orange branches in the house. I eventually shortened the long branches afterall to end up with a more manageable bouquet, suitable to put on the table in the living room and enjoy its beauty and wonderful smell while spending time behind the computer ;) And I thought I just had to share some pictures of that 'restyled' bouquet.

Longing for spring in green and blue

 

Believe it or not but I could show you

snowcovered pictures again,

no, not old ones, brand new ones.

Yes, it's snowing again.

I didn't believe, didn't want to believe

the weatherforecaster when he told us

a few days ago, but he was right and

we are having snow, again.

 

Geloof het of niet maar ik zou jullie

opnieuw sneeuwfoto's kunnen tonen,

geen oude foto's, nieuwe foto's,

want het sneeuwde en sneeuwt vandaag opnieuw.

Ik geloofde het niet, wilde het niet echt geloven

toen de weerman het ons enkele dagen geleden voorspelde,

maar hij kreeg toch gelijk dit keer

en wij kregen en krijgen, nog maar eens, sneeuw.

Nog niet de chocoladen versie,

die zijn voor Pasen zelf,

I just stuck some easter eggs

on the wall with paper tape

and filled up a glass jar with the rest of it.

 

Geen takken om de eitjes aan te hangen dit jaar,

die liet ik buiten waar ze intussen

weer met sneeuw bedekt zijn.

Ik hing de eitjes gewoon met wat

papieren plakband aan de muur.

Met de rest ervan vulde ik een glazen vaas.

I ever bought, about 18 years ago.

Still love them. Blue may not

really be an Easter colour but

it goes perfectly with all the yellow

that appears every spring.

 

De blauwe eitjes hieronder zijn de allereerste paaseitjes

die ik kocht, zo'n 18 jaar geleden intussen.

Ik vind ze nog altijd mooi.

Al is blauw dan misschien niet een echte

paaskleur, het gaat wel goed samen

met alle geel dat in de lente

Purple touches

 

Accenten in paarstinten.

 

 

 

 

Vondsten uit de natuur,

gecombineerd met eigen maaksels.

De hartjes maakte ik uit vilt,

gewoon uitknippen en

eenvoudig met een grote steek

voor- en achterkant aan elkaar naaien

en wanneer je bijna rond bent opvullen

waarna je de laatste steken kan maken

om het helemaal af te werken.

Op de voorkant streek ik eerst een

kleiner hartje mbv Vliesofix.

 

Paars is één van mijn favoriete kleuren.

The hearts are made from felt,

and are very easy to make.

Just cut out the hearts and

sew back and front together with a large stitch.

Fill the heart before you've stitched it all around

and then finish the stitching.

I chose to add smaller hearts on the front.

I ironed these on first(before sewing back

and front together), using Vliesofix

but you could just as easily sew them on first

before sewing back and front together.

want ze stonden al een tijdje op de computer.

Ik nam ze toen er buiten nog sneeuw lag en

het daardoor binnen zo heerlijk licht was

en ideaal om foto's te maken.

A little colour

 

Toegegeven, ik vond het helemaal niet zo makkelijk een post te maken

want een post zonder foto('s) is niet zo mijn ding en precies dat was de

laatste dagen een probleem. De laatste weken blijft de lucht hier constant

betrokken en grijs en valt de regen zonder ophouden neer. Dat zorgt

voor donkere, grijze, ja zelfs deprimerende dagen, zo zonder enige zon.

Zelfs de kerstlichtjes en de brandende kaarsen kunnen het

tekort aan zonlicht niet meer opvangen. Misschien ook daardoor dat ik nu

meer dan ooit naar de lente verlang die hopelijk wat meer zon zal brengen. 

Toch wou en zou ik een laatste post voor dit jaar brengen. Met laarzen aan

toch een keer door de tuin gewaad. Die ligt er kletsnat bij en foto's heb ik

uiteindelijk niet genomen. Ook een eindejaarswandeling zat er niet in. Met de hevige

regen en wind was dat echt niet te doen. Dan maar de cirkels op de foto gezet

die dochterlief en ikzelf deze week op een avond eindelijk gemaakt en aan de takken

gehangen hebben, die nu al meer dan een maand in huis staan. Een klein beetje kleur

dan toch in deze donkere, sombere eindejaarstijd. Tenslotte mijn wens voor iedereen:

Taking pictures has been a bit of a problem lately.

Maybe you noticed that already in the pictures

from my last posts. The weather has been so dark

and grey during the last two weeks due to constant rain

and there has been a real shortage of daylight

to be able to take beautiful pictures.

No sun whatsoever gets to me in the end

and makes me feel depressed a bit even.

Time we finally added some colour

by making the spheres I talked about earlier

and hanging them on the bare branches I

collected and brought inside almost a month ago now.

A little bit of colour in these dark and somber days.

And here's my New Year's wish for everyone:

On the kitchen window sill

 

The pumpkins had to leave the kitchen window sill

to make place for a more christmassy touch.

'Touch' is really the right word.

Just two tiny fake christmas trees

with red and white bows bring Christmas into the kitchen.

moesten plaats ruimen voor een beetje kerstsfeer.

'Een beetje' wel gezegd.

Enkel twee piepkleine valse kerstboompjes

met wit en rode strikjes zorgen voor kerst in de keuken.

Paper christmas tree

 

Remember I made christmastrees out of a book next year?

Well, I still had the leftover pieces of paper lying in the closet

and thought I might give it a go to finally make the

stacked squared paper tree I had been wanting to make also last year

but hadn't gotten around to in the end.

I only had an image of it, no tutorial, but it's so self-evident

that tutorials are really not necessary to start building the tree.

I decided to use some clay I kneeded into a

flattened ball that fits into a simple small terracotta pot I had in the garage.

I then put a flower support stake(also from the garage) in the clay.

The tracing and cutting out of the squares takes up most of the time in this project

but I had already done that yesterday(you could see that here).

I cut squares with sides of  10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 cm to build the tree.

It is a rather narrow long tree. You could start with larger squares
but my leftover pieces of paper didn't allow for that.

Still love the outcome. I added a star on top of the tree.

Weet je nog dat ik vorig jaar kerstboompjes maakte uit boeken?
De resten papier daarvan had ik nog in de kast liggen
en daarmee wou ik nu een kerstboom maken van op elkaar gestapelde
papieren vierkantjes, iets wat ik vorig jaar al van plan was
maar wat er toen niet meer van kwam.
Ik had alleen een foto om van te vertrekken, geen uitleg, maar
het is zo vanzelfsprekend dat het niet echt veel uitleg nodig heeft
om de boom te beginnen bouwen.

 Als 'steun' gebruikte ik wat klei die ik tot een afgeplatte
bol kneedde en in een terracottapotje zette.
Daarin duwde ik een plantensteunstokje om de vierkanten op te prikken.
De meeste tijd bij dit project kruipt in het tekenen en uitknippen van de
vierkantjes, wat ik gisteren al deed, dat kon je hier zien.
Ik knipte vierkantjes met een zijde van 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 en 2 cm
om de kerstboom mee op te bouwen.
Het werd een eerder lange smalle boom. Je kan natuurlijk
met grotere vierkanten als basis starten als je dat wil maar
met de resten papier die ik had was dat niet mogelijk.
Vanboven kwam nog een ster.

I'm still so glad with these reindeer.
They were brought back into the house from the attic 
to add to the christmassy atmosphere inside.

 

Ik blijf deze rendieren prachtig vinden.

Ze werden ook dit jaar weer van zolder gehaald

om mee het huis in kerstsfeer te brengen.

One picture a day?

Last friday I read an interesting idea on one of the blogs I follow.

It was about posting one picture a day until Christmas.

Great idea but I didn't follow the link to 'play along'

because I'm pretty sure I won't be able to post every day.

Taking a picture a day isn't the real problem, that's easily done,

but getting it posted on that day is not so self-evident, at least not for me.

 

Vorige vrijdag stootte ik op een interessant idee op één van de blogs die ik volg.

Het ging erover om elke dag tot Kerstmis een foto te posten.

Leuk idee maar toch volgde ik de link om 'mee te spelen' niet

want ik ben er vrij zeker van dat het me niet zal lukken elke dag te posten.

Elke dag een foto nemen is niet zo'n probleem, dat is rap gebeurd,

maar die dan gepost krijgen is, in mijn geval toch, niet zo vanzelfsprekend.
 

Good thing I didn't play along with the challenge. I would have had

 to surrender from the first day, which was yesterday, already.

Yesterday I had something of a winter cleaning attack.

I just had to clean the house inside and out, even washed the car,

collected all the fallen leaves and piled them up in a corner of the garden

to let them turn into compost there. It was as if I had to get everything

spic and span before I could even consider taking out the Christmas decorations.

And since I've felt the urge to do that all week, I had to do all the cleaning

all at once. Believe me, today it feels like the worst workout I ever had.

BUT I did manage to take that one picture though, I really did,

I just didn't have time to post it yesterday, what did I say.

So now I decided to do it my way. I'll take that picture a day

but post it when I have time. Sometimes I might post about more

than one day and you'll get two or more pictures at once, in one post though.

Is that OK with you? Don't you want to play along with this 'no pressure'

one picture a day idea of mine, you may even just take one picture

every two days, not too much rules whatsoever. No linky thing either, I have

no idea on how to do that. I would just love it if you'd play along ;-)

but if you don't, that's OK, it is totally up to you, just let me know, all right?

 

Goed dat ik niet met de uitdaging meedeed. Van de eerste dag al,

gisteren dus, had ik me gewonnen moeten geven.

Gisteren had ik iets van een winterwoede schoonmaak aanval.

Ik moest en ik zou heel het huis vanbinnen en vanbuiten schoonmaken.

Zelfs de auto ontkwam niet aan mijn kuiswoede; ook die werd gewassen.

En alle bladeren werden samengeharkt en -geveegd en op een stapel

in een hoek van de tuin gedeponeerd om daar te gaan composteren.

Het was alsof ik alles in één keer spic en span moest krijgen vooraleer

ik ook maar kon overwegen om de kerstdecoratie tevoorschijn te halen.

En omdat ik al een hele week de neiging had om met de kerstdeco te beginnen,

moest ik nu dus alles in één keer schoon krijgen. Geloof me, ik voel me

geradbraakt vandaag, alsof ik de ergste training ooit erop heb zitten.

MAAR ik slaagde er wél in die ene foto te nemen, echt waar,

vond alleen de tijd niet meer om hem gisteren ook nog te posten,

wat had ik gezegd, het was al van dat.

Vandaar dat ik nu besloten heb het gewoon op mijn manier te doen.

Wél elke dag een foto die ik dan post als ik er tijd voor vind

met soms een post met foto's van twee of meer opeenvolgende dagen.

Vinden jullie dat een goed idee? Hebben jullie geen zin om mee te doen

met dit 'aangepaste' één foto per dag idee van mij? En zelfs al neem je nu maar

één foto elke twee dagen, maakt niet uit, niet teveel regeltjes of verplichtingen.

Zo'n linkding komt er niet want ik heb hoegenaamd geen idee hoe ik dat

zou moeten aanpakken. Ik zou 't gewoon leuk vinden als je meespeelt

maar als dat niet lukt, ook goed, helemaal jullie keuze, OK?

It really was only one picture I took that day.

As I was washing the windows outside, I saw the reflection

of the neighbours' tree in the window and had to run inside

to quickly take a picture and then quickly get on with my work again.

I first looked at the result today and well, here it is,

my picture for december first!

 

Hier gaan we voor de foto van 1 december:

Het was ook echt maar één foto die dag.

Terwijl ik de ramen aan het lappen was buiten,

viel me de reflectie op in het raam en moest ik gewoon

naar binnen rennen om de camera erbij te halen,

vlug een foto te nemen en dan weer verder te werken.

Het resultaat zag ik vandaag en hier is hij dus,

mijn foto voor 1 december!

 

Today, dec 2d, I catched up on some blogreading

sitting on the couch and that's where I took this picture:

 

Vandaag, 2 december, zat ik wat te bloglezen

in de zetel en daar nam ik deze foto:

 

My second picture in the row of pictures one a day until dec 25th.

It is a deer I bought recently at a local garden center who had those

for the very first time. They are made especially for them.
They had Christmas trees in different sizes made the same way.
They had larger deer as well but I bought one of the smaller ones 
since I have no place in the house to put a large one
and I wouldn't dream of putting it outside into our swampy lawn.
I think it's the very first year that the lawn is so swampy so soon,
normally it's just before and during spring that we have it that way
but after all the rainfall we had from september on

it's no wonder it's like that already now. I wonder what it'll do to all the bulbs

that are still in the ground. Of course the Fritillaria won't mind but the other ones...

Luckily I didn't plant any tulipbulbs this year. I did buy
some bags of tulipbulbs recently though to plant in pots later on.
Well, that's it for the chitchat today, hope I'll find time

to post again tomorrow. I will have my camera at hand at all times ;-)

 

Mijn tweede foto in de rij van foto's per dag tot 25 december.

Het is een hert dat ik onlangs kocht in een plaatselijk tuincentrum

die deze voor de eerste keer had. Ze worden speciaal voor hen gemaakt.

Er waren kerstbomen in verschillende maten op dezelfde manier gemaakt.
Er waren ook grotere herten maar ik kocht één van de 
kleinere exemplaren omdat er voor zo'n groter hert toch geen
plaats is in huis en ik het hoedanook niet buiten wil zetten

op het zompige gras hier. Het is voor het allereerst dat het gazon er zo vroeg

helemaal zo erg zompig bij ligt. Normaal gezien is dat pas tegen einde winter

en begin lente het geval maar met de vele regenval die we al sedert september

hadden is het ook geen wonder. Benieuwd wat dat zal doen met de bloembollen

die  nog in de grond zitten. De Fritillaria zijn er wel tegen bestand maar voor de rest
is het afwachten. Goed dat ik geen tulpen plantte dit jaar, zelfs niet in potten.

Onlangs kocht ik wel enkele zakjes tulpenbollen om later in pot te zetten.

Tot zover mijn babbel voor nu, hopelijk vind ik morgen weer tijd om te posten.
Ik zal er in elk geval voor zorgen dat mijn camera nooit veraf is ;-)

Did you have snow already where you're living?
The rest of the country here did
but the snow skipped our part of the country.
The first snow brought its problems on the roads
but also the most beautiful winter landscapes of course.
Saw that on the news.
I'm starting to wonder if the weather in our western
corner of the country will always be totally different
from the rest of the country now. It certainly
was these last months.


Hadden jullie al sneeuw vandaag?

Die heeft ons helemaal overgeslagen.

De rest van het land kreeg het

wel over zich heen met de nodige problemen op de weg
maar ook prachtige beelden van winterse landschappen natuurlijk.
Dat zag ik vanavond op het nieuws.
Ik begin me af te vragen of het weer hier in onze westelijke hoek
van het land vanaf nu altijd zo verschillend zal zijn
van de rest van het land. Dat was het de laatste maanden
in elk geval wel.

 

 

 

Blue

While outside, the flowers all have shades of pink,
inside, the decoration is mainly blue for the moment.

It began with three bowls I bought.

I love white and blue tableware.

Saxon blue and white porcelain for instance

has always been a favourite of mine.

Other matching blue decorations were added
to the three bowls in blue:

A small dried Hydrangea flower that

kept its blue colour wonderfully well

and two bears with each a white dotted blue bow.

These hadn't been out here for years,

but as they just fitted the colourscheme wonderfully well,

they regained their place on the cupboard.

I do like blue in the garden as well:

Love-in-a-mist, Poppy Anemones, different kinds of

garden Geraniums and Hydrangeas to name a few.

You probably know by now I don't like grey skies at all
but I absolutely love blue skies.
No doubt about it,
blue is definitely one of my favourite colours.

 

Terwijl buiten de bloemen allemaal tinten van roze aannemen,
is de decoratie binnenshuis voor het ogenblik
voornamelijk blauw getint.
Het begon met drie kommetjes met blauwe opdruk die ik kocht.
Ik hou van blauw-wit servies.
Zo vind ik Saksisch porselein bijvoorbeeld heel mooi.
De drie schaaltjes in blauwe tinten werden aangevuld met meer blauw.
Een kleine gedroogde hortensiabloem,
die haar blauwe kleur wonderwel behield,
en twee beren met elk een blauwe strik met witte stippen,
passen perfect binnen het plaatje.
De beren zaten al heel lang opgeborgen
maar hebben nu dus hun plaatsje op de kast heroverd.

Ik hou ook wel van blauw in de tuin:
De blauwe bloemen van
Juffertjes-in-'t-groen, Anemonen Coronaria,
verschillende soorten tuingeraniums en Hortensia's
om er maar enkele op te noemen.
Intussen weten jullie wellicht dat ik
helemaal niet van grijze luchten hou maar
wél heel veel van een blauwe lucht.
Geen twijfel mogelijk,
Blauw is absoluut één van mijn favoriete kleuren.

Finally pumpkins

 

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw these bags with

gourds in the supermarket.

One bag with three bigger ones
and one with smaller pumpkins went home with me.

Ik kon mijn ogen bijna niet geloven toen ik in de supermarkt
deze netjes met pompoenen zag liggen.
Eén netje met drie grotere en één met
meerdere kleinere exemplaren gingen mee naar huis.

 

Finally pumpkins! Yes! Not the cute baby boo's I love,

and only know from blogland actually, but still...

PUMPKINS!!!  Well, gourds really

but I call them all pumpkins.

Eindelijk pompoenen! Niet de schattige baby boo's
die ik alleen van blogland ken, maar toch...
POMPOENEN!!! Wel, kalebassen eigenlijk
maar ik noem ze ook gewoon pompoenen.
 

 

For now I laid the collection of gourds all in a nice

row on our narrow window sill

in the kitchen.

Voorlopig legde ik de pompoenen
netjes op een rijtje
op de smalle vensterbank in de keuken.

Enter the kitchen and there they are!

The kids thought it looked fantastic.

Think I might just use that window sill

for decorative use more often in the future.

Je kan er niet naast kijken.
Kom de keuken binnen en daar zijn ze!
De kinderen vonden het in elk geval fantastisch.
Denk dat ik de vensterbank wat vaker
voor decoratieve doeleinden zal inzetten;-)

 

The pumpkins are accompanied by some acorns
we gathered recently.

 

De pompoenen worden vergezeld van wat eikels
die we onlangs raapten.

 

I want to thank you all so much for the wonderful comments
on my last post. I had fun making it and I was glad to read
you liked it all so much.
It's such a cute little thing 
but still very alone for now....
unless you count in the real pumpkins I bought of course.

Ik wil jullie allemaal heel erg bedanken voor de lieve commentaren
op mijn vorige post. Ik vond het leuk om maken en was dan ook
blij te lezen dat jullie het ook leuk vonden.
Het is een schatje maar voorlopig nog alleen....
tenzij je de echte pompoenen die ik kocht
meetelt natuurlijk.
