Howard Devoto - Jerky Versions Of The Dream - 1983

Rebooted...
Originally posted August 22, 2015

Howard Devoto - Jerky Versions Of The Dream
Studio Recordings @320
{Out of Print}

Easily as good as anything from his Magazine days, Devoto's first solo lp follows on thematically (if not chronologically!) from the excellent 'Correct Use of Soap'. This sees young Howie stepping light, almost delicately through this clipped, precise collection of songs. Its as if he's deliberately moved away from previous somber (but beautiful) Mags fare and is exploring lighter, may one suggest, happier territory..

The album is chock full of clever lyrics and subtle, insidious pop melodies. There's at least 6 other songs of  haunting, deliberate sleights of hand, swirling infectious snippets of soulful wizardry.

It has stood times test superbly,and is as good for us today as its always been. Devoto's lp deserves much wider recognition than it got in 1983

(DVD full, pro-shot, 1.4 GB).
A 'What's On' special featuring the Buzzcocks and Magazine, broadcast on Granada TV on July 27th, 1978 and presented by Tony Wilson. This copy appears to be taken directly from the production master, complete with slates. I've created a DVD out of it using TMPGEnc. The programme lasts nearly 40 minutes and consists mainly of Tony Wilson interviewing Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, but there is also live footage of both bands shot at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester on July 21st, 1978.

Luxuria - Beast Box -1990 {Out of Print}

Luxuria - Beast Box -1990
Studio Recordings @ 320
{Out of Print}

Luxuria was a British pop music band made up of vocalist Howard Devoto (formerly of Buzzcocks and Magazine) and instrumentalist Norman Fisher-Jones, aka "Noko." The band was active in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Devoto and Noko met through Pete Shelley, supposedly bonding over a competition to read Marcel Proust (Noko won). The two recorded six collections of material.
In 1987, they signed to Beggars Banquet and formed Luxuria. In 1988, they released their debut album, Unanswerable Lust. Their second and final album, Beast Box, was released in 1990.
~Wiki

Anyone remember this recording? I had forgotten all about Howard Devoto and The Luxuria project put together by him and former bandmate Noko until digging through my music looking for something else. An excellent recording, stands up really well even 25 years later!

The Beast Box is Dreaming
Stupid Blood
Against the Past
Our Curious Leader
We Keep on Getting There

Animal in the Mirror
Dirty Beating Heart
Smoking Mirror
I've Been Expecting You
