Miles Davis Septet - Live Rainbow Theatre, London 1973

Rebooted...
Last posted April 23, 2020

Miles Davis Septet - Live Rainbow Theatre
London, UK
July 10, 1973
Excellent Band recording @flac

 Miles Davis (tpt, org); Dave Liebman (ss, ts, fl); Pete Cosey (g, perc); Reggie Lucas (g);
Michael Henderson (el-b); Al Foster (d); James Mtume Foreman (cga, perc)

In 1972, Miles Davis released On The Corner. In his autobiography, Miles felt Columbia Records didn't push the album, which added to his frustrations, but it was also a time when Miles learnt more of Stockhausen's concepts of music. He said: "I had always written in a circular way and through Stockhausen I could see that I didn't want to ever play again from eight bars to eight bars, because I never end songs; they just keep going on."
With percussionist Mtume Heath and guitarist Pete Cosey in the lineup, "the band settled down into a deep African thing, a deep African-American groove, with a lot of emphasis on drums and rhythm, and not on individual solos."
Miles added: "I would try exploring one chord with this band, one chord in a tune, trying to get everyone to master these small little simple things like rhythm. We would take a chord and make it work for five minutes with variations, cross rhythms, things like that. Say Al Foster is playing in 4/4, Mtume might be playing in 6/8, or 7/4, and the guitarist might be comping in another time signature, or another rhythm altogether different. That's a lot of intricate shit we were working off this one chord."
For audiences attending this show in London in 1973, they would have thought of Miles playing tracks from On The Corner. But for many, the performance, though fiery, probably sounded more like improvisations and noddlings. Tracks like Turnaroundphrase and Tune In 5, which featured here, would only reach a wider audience with the release of the Dark Magus live album in 1974.
For now, fans can say a word of thanks to saxophonist Dave Liebman who had the presence of mind to put a tape recorder on stage and record the shows.
As valleybird commented on the internet: "This is an excellent stage recording, and so is the performance itself! Click on start, close your eyes if you like, and be on stage with the band! Thanks to Dave Liebman, who I believe is the source of this tape. What you get here is an excellent capture of the stage sound at a Victorian entertainment theater, the Rainbow Theater. The sound of the drums sound natural... There is only low interference of the PA, what you get is their stage amp line, which wasn't so bad for this time. A really interesting recording for audiophiles too."

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Denver Coliseum, Denver, CO November 26, 1969

Source: AUD recording
Format: Flac
Lineage: ?>CDR>WAV?Flac
Sound: Fair, but an excellent show for its age!

If you have this show, this version should be a modest upgrade, however it's
still pretty rough. The beginning of the acoustic set is particularly difficult
to hear. There isn't distortion. Rather, it sounds like the taper was
very far away, and using mediocre equipment. There isn't a lot of hiss
that one would expect for a recording this old. I don't think it was traded
much. The original recording was difficult to hear. This one is better, but
not great. Once one gets adjusted to the sound, it's listenable. The only
comparable recording I can think of, in terms of sound, is the LA show in
6/70.

I did a number of things to "improve" the sound. I applied a very small
amount of NR to reduce hiss. I applied EQ to bring out the music as much
as possible and reduce the sound of the hall (which was louder than the
music). I compressed and levelled it because the dynamics were all over
the place and the volume varied wildly.

The reason to download this one regardless of the sound is Crosby's performance
of "Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)", Neil's "Expecting To Fly", the
intro jam prior to "Pre-Road Downs", and a 25 minute "Down By The River".
Fortunately, the sound is a little better in these spots.

remaster notes:
this was posted on Dec. 28, 2008 by the chief123 at torrent #229302.
this thing needed MEGA ICPVR (individual clap peak volume reduction) and mike bump
reduction, since there were lots of loud claps and bumps of the mike that
were louder than any music in here. (not any more). the beginning of track 10
had the end of track 9 on it so I've fixed that, and added track times.
I also removed a couple of short gaps (apparently in the source recording)
to make this a seamless, and much smoother listen than it was.

Stuart's original notes:

"Recorded using an Awia recording Walkman and an external stereo mic from the center of the hall onto TDK SA C90 tapes with Dolby off.
Transferred in March 2007 to Adobe Audition. I have only used Hard Limiting on loud crowd sections of applause and not any music. Apart from that I have only Normalised.

This is part of the 1st show of the Earth Ritual Preview tour.
Unfortunately the first C90 was stolen from our car while we were at the Manchester gig a few days later. Fortunately the rest of it is in circulation."

A huge thank you to Stuart for taping this show and giving permission for it to be tracked in a form suitable for Dime.

Please support the band by buying their official releases / merchandise and going to their gigs (on tour 2009 - 40TH Anniversary!! - check http://www.hawkwindmuseum.co.uk/tour%20dates.htm for dates).

In May of 1988 Atlantic Records celebrated their 40th anniversary in New York City at Madison Square Garden. A grand mix of Atlantic artist performed ranging from the past to the (then) present. The actual concert lasted over 12 hours and portions of the concert were broadcast on HBO and simulcast on FM radio. This recording was taken from WNEW FM in New York and totals 5 1/2 hours in length. The entire show was never broadcast. Some artist’s sets were edited and some omitted entirely. The broadcast started hours after the event started so some of the performances shown were live while others were recorded earlier. To some extent the performances were not broadcast in their original running order with acts from earlier in the day inserted between the later acts and of course songs omitted to make room for them.

Quite an interesting array or artists spanning 40 years of Atlantic history. There is a section in the center of the show with various members of Booker T. & The M.G.'s featuring Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn along with Dan Akyroyd as his alter ego Elwood Blues. They are listed here as The Elwood Blues Review as dubbed so by Elwood himself. And of course the night concludes with the Led Zeppelin Reunion featuring Jason Bonham on drums. Quite a night.
