Damn.......Chris is gone. Now I loves me some Savoy Brown without Chris, but if I want the best version (IMO) of Savoy Brown I go to the albums he's on. Can't find a lot of info on this, and at first I didn't think it was Chris Youlden, but no, no from what I can ascertain this is Chris with Top Topham (from The Yardbirds) fronting a band called Bluesprint. Any and all info you can provide would help on this post.

Between 2001 and 2002, Warner Brothers were working on a boxed set that was to include everything Miles Davis had recorded in the studio during his time with the company, 1985-1991, including many previously unreleased studio outtakes, plus some particularly noteworthy live material from the same era. The box was to be called The Last Word, and was initially earmarked for release on Rhino Records in September 2001, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Miles’s death.

In July 2002, the now-defunct ICE newsletter reported:

Originally slated for release August 2002, Rhino pulled [Miles Davis’] The Last Word from rotation stating: “We deeply regret the fact that we will not be releasing [the box set] on August 20,” David Dorn, VP of Media Relations for Warner Strategic Marketing, told ICE. “Our commitment has always been to offer consumers the best possible audio and video products for the best possible value. Due to developing circumstances beyond our control, we felt that this box set would not, in its finished form, meet our standards, or the standards our customers expect from our products.”

Even then, a four-CD set had been sent out to the press and to retailers.

At miles-beyond.com, in a note dated February 2005, Paul Tingen explained why The Last Word project stopped and ends his notes with this:

The banning of my liner notes turned out to be only the beginning of what went wrong with an increasingly ill-fated and ultimately doomed project. Prince, perhaps still motivated by resentment towards Warners, refused to give permission for the release of the three tracks written by him for Miles that Matt Pierson (head of jazz at Warners) wanted to include in the 6-CD set, and similar legal issues held up the release of much of the material from the memorable all-star La Villette concert in Paris in 1991.

Gradually the 6-CD set shrivelled to just 4 CDs, with very little previously unreleased material, which had been kind of the main point of the set. There must still have been a real belief in getting it out, because under huge time pressure Bill Milkowski completed new liner notes in just four days (!), and some CD-R review copies were sent out, without art work. Then some time in 2002 the release was quietly abandoned altogether. Officially no reasons were given. When I queried an insider at Rhino, he would only say: ‘Estate problems.’

So while it is unlikely that you’ll ever get to hear all of the music included in the original 6-CD set, here, at least, is the story of the music in more detail than ever before.

In the meantime, the Japanese Legendary Collection Series released The Black Album, a two-CD compilation featuring some of the unreleased tracks from the aborted The Last Word and other unreleased tracks.

On October 18, 2010, Warner released the two-CD compilation, Perfect Way: The Warner Bros Years. Apart from previously released tracks, the set includes three previously unreleased live tracks - Portia, Carnival and Human Nature - from the 1986 Nice Jazz Festival and two unreleased tracks - Digg That and Rubberband - from the much talked-about Rubberband sessions in 1985, just after he signed to Warner, that featured keyboardist Adam Holzman, Vince Wilburn Jr on drums and Steve Reid on percussion.

For those who are still keeping count, only four of The Black Album’s tracks are officially available. Included here is one still unreleased track from the four-CD Last Word.

If the hard rock of the ’70s was littered with drawn-out jams and extended solos, then one of the things that punk did was to bring back songs that were short, sharp… and sometimes sweet.

This is what Jon Young wrote about the cow-punk group, X, in The Trouser Press Guide To ’90s Rock (1991):

Though X was perhaps the most important band to emerge from the Los Angeles punk scene, its members were never genuine punks per se. Too self-conscious and artsy to simply spew, leaders John Doe (bass, vocals) and Exene Cervenka (vocals) repackaged their bohemian tendencies in new guise, delivering desperate meditations on sex and society at high velocity, happy to ride the coattails of more instinctual performers.

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter will be 80 on August 25 and this performance at the Festival des Cinq Continents in Marseille has been touted as an 80th birthday celebration. If only all of us could be so fortunate! And in February 2013, Shorter made his return to Blue Note Records after 43 years and released Without A Net, his new album with his long-running Quartet featuring pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade.

Reviewing Without A Net for the BBC, Marcus J. Moore wrote:

Jazz great Wayne Shorter recently spoke to the heart of his genre. “The six years I was with Miles (Davis), we never talked about music,” he told National Public Radio in the US. “We never had a rehearsal. How do you rehearse the unknown?”

He’s absolutely right. When done properly, jazz is a boundless medium through which improvisation is allowed to breathe. In fact, it’s encouraged…So in the truest essence of jazz, Without a Net is a sharp return to the music’s brighter days. Orbits is a repurposed version of the Miles Davis Quintet’s 1967 song of the same name. Shorter played on the original, a sprightly number of quick drum snares and lively piano chords. Shorter’s version is a bit darker and more methodical: above unsettled piano keys and cascading percussion, he infuses the melody with sporadic horn fills. It all makes for an exceptional recording, the saxophonist’s first since 2005’s Beyond the Sound Barrier. Here, Shorter is firmly at the helm, yet benevolent enough to play the background when needed. The rhythm has taken him far.

How did you ever hear this Jobe,you might ask?...Well many, many years ago our local college station used to have a show called "Raw Guts" on this show they featured the latest in "Punk Rock" The D.J. played "Hot Pistol" one night from King Bee. I was totally floored by this. I ended up calling the D.J. and got as much info as I could (and yes fans, this was way before there was a thing called the Internet) I managed to start a correspondence with Whizeagle records in Portland, sent my 5 dollars and am proud to say one of the greatest 5 dollar investments I ever made. This is the exclusive 3 song E.P. If you love The Cramps, The Gun Club (which really doesn't have a lot to do with this recording) I think you're gonna love this. Don't take my word for it let me let a couple others explain.         MY ORIGINAL VINYL COPY
