Killing Joke - The Pandemonium Demos

Rebooted...
Originally posted January 19, 2015

Killing Joke - The Pandemonium Demos
Studio recordings @192

For one brief moment, Killing Joke enjoyed their fifteen minutes of above-ground fame not for a having one of their early songs covered by the band whose name begins with M, but for their own accomplishments. The band had essentially reformed with the original 1980 lineup (minus the drummer) and the result was a fresh and interesting record, which garnered a lot of attention with "Millenium". Overall, Pandemonium features a bit of an exotic overtone to it over a somewhat repetitive, looping heavy metal-industrial hybrid. The result is a consistent and strong record which deserved much of the fleeting attention the MTV generation gave it while "Millenium" received airplay. But that track is only one of ten strong songs here. Nearly every song has a lot to offer the listener and is quite enjoyable in one way or another. Even when the band lightens up their thick sound as they do on "Jana", it's still successful. This is the sort of album that is best played on roadtrips or any time you need heavy, energetic and kinetic music. And the other benefit of Killing Joke's short moment of mainstream notice is that now you can find this album easily in used CD discount bins everywhere, though that is a sad testament to the wishy-washy nature of the mainstream buying public.

Chris Whitley - Live Seattle, WA. 1991

Rebooted...originally posted September 9, 2014 with File Factory link.

Chris Whitley - Live Space Needle
Seattle, WA.
November 19, 1991
FM Source @flac

...this guy was deep blues – lived it, died for it, and resonated it. A troubadour who traveled the world, Chris finally got discovered by uber-producer Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan), who set Chris up to record with Lanois protégé’ producer Malcom Burns, down in Dan’s New Orleans-based studio at the time. Whatever was in the water from Chris' native Houston,Texas birthplace (same water that spawned ZZ Top and King’s X), it sure as hell got into his blood, and coarsen its way out his veins onto his guitar and throat. Any Chris Whitley CD has some pretty intense life stories woven into it.

And the cool thing to me was, it wasn’t always the country - voodoo blues resonator style that propelled his stuff – the guy could hit on smoky cool, Chet Baker style jazz, as well as grinding noise-rock ala Sonic Youth to make a point. Check out the cuts “Never”, and “Din”, on his CD, “Din Of Ecstasy” – Chris’ electric guitar work just explodes in noise and feedback throughout. This isn’t controlled, polished, processed guitar feedback – all cleaned-up, and sonically hitting some acceptable pitches – this is guitar work that just grabs you by the shirt and throws you across the room - because it’s VERY pissed off, and it wants you to know. This sort of  guitar sound comes from another realm, another world, entirely – it’s more visceral than technique – based (although there is a technique used to get there), more emotional than intellectual. Jagged with sharp edges –the guitar, acoustic and electric throughout the CD, actually seems to be falling off a cliff, for the most part. Along with Chris’ most passionate vocals, the album is a continuous IV drip of sensuality, regret, loss, and retribution. If Hendrix were around, I think he would be apt to say, ”Cool”, because Chris’ electric guitar work here is clearly a homage to Jimi in spirit and body…..

Jimi Hendrix - Live In Scandinavia Volume 1 {Out Of Print}

 * THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

Finally after all of your patience and waiting I'm getting around to posting this. Word of warning though, this one doesn't sound as good as Volume 2. Some of this is just for pure historical content. When have you ever seen a boot that had "EXP" and "UP FROM THE SKIES"? So with that in mind, here is VOLUME 1. See scans

Howard Devoto - Jerky Versions Of The Dream - 1983

Rebooted...

Howard Devoto - Jerky Versions Of The Dream
Studio Recordings @320
{Out of Print}

Easily as good as anything from his Magazine days, Devoto's first solo lp follows on thematically (if not chronologically!) from the excellent 'Correct Use of Soap'. This sees young Howie stepping light, almost delicately through this clipped, precise collection of songs. Its as if he's deliberately moved away from previous somber (but beautiful) Mags fare and is exploring lighter, may one suggest, happier territory..

The album is chock full of clever lyrics and subtle, insidious pop melodies. There's at least 6 other songs of  haunting, deliberate sleights of hand, swirling infectious snippets of soulful wizardry.

It has stood times test superbly,and is as good for us today as its always been. Devoto's lp deserves much wider recognition than it got in 1983
