[Rarities from The Her(m)etic Garage] Michael Ray & The Cosmic Krewe - Heimatklänge Berlin 1998

1998-08-14 Heimatklänge Festival Berlin

sorry, no tracklist

help would be very appreciated

Late, but not too late, this very enthusiastic show, was provided by my friend Michael, who also recorded the other shows with a tape recorder from FM Radio (Multikulti) - and it's a perfect fit to what I like the most: pure crazyness Sun Ra style (Michael Ray was a long time member of the Arkestra)

Enjoy it like I did! Play Loud!

The Legendary Meters featuring the JB Horns - Moonwalker Vol. 1&2

The Legendary Meters feat. JB Horns
Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley & Pee Wee Ellis
Live at the Moonwalker, 1&2 (1991 &1993)
Soundboard recordings @ 192-256
{Out of Print}
Available for around $150

"This tour was the result of the incarceration of James Brown and the earlier breakup of the Meters. As a result this version of The Meters was sans Art or Zigaboo; they were replaced by David Torkanowsky (Astral Project) on organ and David Russell Batiste (Funky Meters) on drums. The JB's were doing a lot of touring under several different names but I've never heard the story as to who thought of this outrageously funky combination. I always said that a horn section might have put the Meters over the top and here's some proof. The pairing is epic, the New Orleans funk rhythm section playing on the back side of the beat and the JB Horns on the front side, making for a wonderful dynamic tension that serves to magnify the funk. The program mixes tunes from both groups books and it appears they were all already familiar with each others' material.
The second volume of this funky madness kicks off with one of my favorite Meters tunes "Change Reform" at the head of a five Meters song run. In the old days "Change - Reform" and "Middle of the Road" were usually the extended jam pieces in every Meters show. They do a killer "Cold Sweat" which blends into the Lee Dorsey hit "Ride Your Pony" followed by a slightly over long version of Leo's "Be My Lady". The night finishes with two Maceo tunes, the extended jam on "Southwick" being a real highlight." ~KingCakeCrypt@blogspot.com ”

note: Disc 1 is a bit under amped and the other is quite a bit louder. That's the way they came. If wished, drop both discs onto free MP3GAIN and execute 'Album Gain'.

The original plan was to have a "pre-release" party
over here, posting 6 at that point uncut shows from the
"Heimatklänge - Sounds from the South" festival 1998
a friend of mine sent me ...
but his preference was more giving advance
to his favourite soul & funk blog.

That being done: ladies and gentlemen,
rare stuff ahead. As far as we're aware not yet
released anywhere else this week
is proud to present to you
music from the deep south

Bo, Eddie - 1998-07-22
Bo, Eddie - 1998-07-24
Brown, Clarence Gatemouth - 1998-08
Myles, Raymond -  1998-07-29
Riley & The Mamon Playboys, Steve - 1998-08-05
Rockin Doopsie Jr & Zydeco Jrs - 1998-08-21

Big thanks to Micha (a friend for 35 years)
who recorded them from the radio
and kept this and other tapes in his vault

There's no other blog (afaik) where you could find this little treasure
A second Eddie Bo show, two days later will follow soon
But first there will 4 other concerts from the same festival
(to keep the suspense, dear Eddie Bo fans out there)

greetings from the garage!

Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity - Open (1967)

Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger
& The Trinity - Open (1967)
aka - Jools
Studio soundboard @256
{Out of Print}

Continuing on a theme...

From the outgrowth of Steampacket, a band that included not only Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll, but also a young Rod Stewart, came Auger and Driscoll's collective effort that produced two albums. When Driscoll left in 1969 to pursue a solo career, Auger, drummer Clive Thacker, and bassist Dave Ambrose continued as Brian Auger & the Trinity. Open has been unfairly characterized as a kind of groove jazz rip, one that combines Wes Montgomery, Jimmy McGriff, and the rock sensibilities of the psychedelic era. Whatever. There are many tracks here, from deep grooved funky jazz to lilting ballads and greasy blues numbers and the skronky exotica number "Goodbye Jungle Telegraph." Auger may not have been as gifted an organist as Alan Price technically, but he could more than hold his own on the Hammond B-3 (as evidenced by the first two tracks here which are instrumentals, "In And Out" and "Isola Nate"). He was also able to pull more sounds out of the instrument than any of his peers. Auger wasn't much of a vocalist, but he could dig deep and get the emotion out of a song -- especially in a funky number like "Black Cat," which featured a killer though uncredited studio horn section. Driscoll's contributions are all on the second half of the album, beginning with the shuffling choogle of Lowell Fulsom's "Tramp," continuing through a moving reading of Pops Staples' "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)," two Auger originals, and concluding in a reading of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" that single-handedly established her reputation as a vocalist of great interpretative ability and emotional dexterity. Almost eight minutes in length, it is the perfect interplay for the quartet with its dark, smoky swirling energy and extant soul groove, and capos the album on a high note, making it a delightful precursor to the classic Streetnoise which was to follow.  ~Tom Jurek

Track List:
1. In And Out
2. Isola Natale
3. Black Cat
4. Lament For Miss Baker

Brian Auger's Oblivion Express (1971)

Brian Auger's Oblivion Express (1971)
Studio Soundboard @320
{Out Of Print}

The first outing by Brian Auger's jazz-rock ensemble the Oblivion Express, first issued in 1971, is one of the great masterpieces of jazz-rock fusion. Auger, having just disbanded his longtime band the Trinity in 1970, still had plenty of rock and roll in his system. His yearning for the open frontiers of electric jazz was certainly the driving force -- in the same way that it was for Miles Davis on A Tribute to Jack Johnson, and Lifetime was for Tony Williams -- but it was anchored in the visceral application of rock. With guitarist Jim Mullen, bassist Barry Dean, and drummer Robbie McIntosh, Auger charted into the unknown. This album fits like a glove, each tune moving ever forward into the next. From the opening knotty, rhythmic twists in "Dragon Song," to the subterranean counterpoint in "Total Eclipse," to the band's theme song that closes the album with its pumping bass and guitar interludes, and Auger's Lemmy Kilmister-like vocals, Oblivion Express is a classic in its genre. There is a rawness in passion and intent here that is balanced by wondrously imaginative arrangements for rock band instrumentation, and an aesthetic that is disciplined and visionary. ~Thom Jurek AllMusic

Jimmy Johnson Band Live Tros Holland 1989

Did you hear that? Did you find it? What the hell are you talking about Jobe? Well....the sound is that of a pin dropping and the other is the needle in the haystack. What the fuck are you talking about Jobe?  Well that's how well my G N' R and my last Beatles (Volume 12) post went over. The Beatles (Volume 12) post as of today only has 211 views, when the other volumes I posted have over 400 (maybe I made them too hard to find and everybody just said fuck it) The G N' R post only has 111 views. I know Axl is a dick and their popularity is waning, but I thought it would go over bigger (Maybe you have it already) Well that brings me to this post, Don't ignore this post just maybe because you've never heard of  Jimmy Johnson. Or maybe you don't trust my taste anymore but let me make it up to you with this post. See scans

Feelin' Alone and Confused...And Don't Know What To Do!

Psst... Yeah, You!   Come Here!
You ain't lookin' too good... Even behind that mask, I can tell...
Right Here, I got what You need to make You feel better!
Take THIS and I'll Guarantee You'll be feelin' better - at least for a while, anyway!
Go on, Take it home and Crank It Up or get You a nice set of headphones and get lost in THIS and away from Everything Else!

This is a "Damn Near Perfect!" FM Recording!
You ain't heard me say that about a bootleg, yet!

I was listenin' to THIS late last night and DAMN! (Yeah, I said DAMN!)
I dug THIS out of The Barn Archives...And I had forgotten about Wet Willie, and how good they were! They were on Capricorn Records back then, and had a few hits, but mostly got over-shadowed by many of their label-mates...

THIS is Good Time Rock & Roll!
If You wanna listen to "Keep On Smilin'" first, that's fine - it'll pick You up, then "Street Corner Serenade (Fun Song!)," Cool!
But DO NOT Ignore the rest of this show at The Bottom Line!

It starts with an Up-Tempo Rocker: "Leona" - from the title You'd think it a love song, and well it kinda is: 'Bout a place way down south called Leona's Home Cooking Cafe and how Jimmy Hall got a Fried Chicken Dinner there. A simple song 'bout simple things! Derek, we used to stop at diners down south and eat lunch together, packed in a run-down lookin' place with a ton of cars outside!
The best burgers and homefries could be had there, or an open-faced roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy and sweet tea (Not that kind where you have to add like 25 packets of sugar to, and still it don't get sweet!!!).

Back to the music:
Wet Willie had a Great Sound and one of the best, soulful singers in Jimmy Hall...
There's guitars, bass and drums, vocals, horns, harmonica, Etc. all blendin' together! The last song reminds me of a Chuck Berry tune from long ago!

Do Not Pass This One Up!    'Nuff Said!

Boat Of Dreams...

Here's an Excellent one from HEART!
It's a BBC Rock Hour (Or here in the states it was called London Wavelength?) Broadcast recording!

Heart was touring their Little Queen album...
The location and exact date of the recording (as far as I know) is unknown...

The Intro and Outro are here, even though they're not listed on the back cover, but somewhere along the way the commercials were removed - but, I don't believe any music or band talk was lost along the way!
You didn't wanna hear those old Toyota commercials anyway, did ya?

Not much else to say: You know Heart's unique blend of Folk, Rock, Pop, Etc.
and their eagerness to cover Zeppelin!
It's All Here!
IF You like Heart (And Don't Have It) - Get It!
