Rival Sons - Live Crossroads Festival 2013

 *THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

Man, it just recently came to my attention that we have nothing posted by these guys. Our bad. If you like the post below this one (Humble Pie) I think you'll love this. These guys are from Cali. With a sound that reminds me of Deep Purple, Black Country Communion, The Black Crowes, Faces, Led Zeppelin with a singer that matches Plant in intensity, and vocal range. These guys bring it. By the same token I see where they are the openers for Smashing Pumpkins on Uncle Fester's (Billy Corgan) latest tour. HOW CAN THIS BE? These guys should be the headliners and Nasal Whine (again Billy Corgan) should be making sure The Sons rider is strickly adhered to. One day....One day. See scans

Humble Pie - Peel Session BBC Studios
September 20, 1970
Soundboard/FM Source @192

1 unchapterd file @60minues

Humble Pie, recorded in concert for the BBC as part of the John Peel Presents series from Sepetember 20, 1970.

It would be hard to say where Humble Pie were more huge – the U.S. or the UK. They were a staple in the diet of every vinyl collector and were played almost non-stop on most of the Underground FM stations at the time. They epitomized the growth of Hard Rock as a genre; the non-stop onslaught of guitars and stage swagger and they symbolized excess, almost as much as Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones.

Having formed in 1969 from elements of Small Faces (Steve Marriot), The Herd (Peter Frampton) Greg Ridley (Spooky Tooth), they achieved success almost out of the gate. By 1970 (when this concert was recorded), they had switched labels to A&M, got new management and their fortunes soared.

During 1970, with the Immediate label having finally collapsed Humble Pie signed to A&M Records, and Dee Anthony became their manager. Anthony was focused on the US market and discarded the acoustic set, instigating a more raucous sound with Marriott as the front man. The group’s first album for A&M, Humble Pie, was released later that year and alternated between progressive rock and hard rock. A single, “Big Black Dog”, was released to coincide with the album and failed to chart, however the band was becoming known for popular live rock shows in the US.

It was during this period that Peter Frampton acquired his famed “Phenix” guitar, the black 1954 Les Paul Custom which became his signature instrument and his favorite guitar for the next decade. Humble Pie was playing a run of shows at the Fillmore West in San Francisco in early December 1970, and during the first show Frampton was plagued by sound problems with his then-current guitar, a semi-acoustic Gibson 335, which was prone to unwanted feedback at higher volumes. After the show he was approached by fan and musician Mark Mariana, who loaned him a modified 1954 Gibson Les Paul, and by the end of the second show Frampton had become so enamored of the guitar that he offered to buy it on the spot, but Mariana refused payment. Frampton played it almost exclusively for the next ten years. It was featured on the cover of Frampton Comes Alive and was thought to have been destroyed in 1980 when a plane carrying Frampton’s stage equipment crashed in Venezuela during a South American tour, killing the crew, but with the guitar in fact surviving the accident with some minor damage. It was eventually returned to Frampton in 2011.

Frampton would leave a little over a year later and start that part of the legacy. But this 1970 concert captures the band during their halcyon days, with certainly no looking back.

I don’t you need to be reminded to turn this one up . .  .way up.

George Harrison and Ravi Shankar's 1974 North American tour was a 45-show concert tour of the United States and Canada, undertaken by English musician George Harrison and Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar in November and December 1974. It is often referred to as the Dark Horse Tour, since the concerts served as a launch for Harrison's record label Dark Horse Records, and Harrison's concurrent single was the song "Dark Horse" The release of his delayed album, also titled Dark Horse, followed towards the end of the tour. The shows featured guest spots by Harrison's band members Billy Preston and Tom Scott.

The 1974 tour was the first in North America by a former member of the Beatles since the band's 1966 visit. Raising expectations further among fans and the media, it marked the first live performances by Harrison since his successful staging of the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh shows, which had also featured Shankar and Preston. Harrison had no wish to revisit his Beatles past, however. In his set list for the tour, Harrison included just four Beatles songs: his own compositions "Something", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "For You Blue", and the Lennon–McCartney song "In My Life".

The response from music critics varied significantly throughout the tour. Some reviewers were scathing in their assessment: Harrison was criticized for failing to respect the public's nostalgia for the Beatles, his choosing to afford considerable stage-time to Shankar's ensemble, his spiritual pronouncements and on-stage demeanor, and particularly the rough quality of his singing voice, caused by overexertion in the months leading up to the opening concert. Other reviews were highly favorable, admiring Harrison's humility in sharing the spotlight with his fellow musicians and the lack of overly theatrical presentation, and praising the breadth and adventurousness of the musical program (Wiki).

Harrison's Band:
George Harrison – Vocals, Electric & Acoustic Guitars
Billy Preston – Vocals, Organ, Clavinet, Synthesizer, Backing Vocals
Tom Scott – Saxophones, Flute
Robben Ford – Electric a& Acoustic Guitars, Backing Vocals
Jim Horn – Saxophones, Flute
Chuck Findley – Trumpet, Flute
Emil Richards – Marimba, Percussion
Willie Weeks – Bass
Andy Newmark – Drums
Kumar Shankar – Percussion, Backing Vocals
Ravi Shankar - Sitar & Conductor for Shankar's orchestra

EN remaster of what could be a master or 1st gen reel -- possibly from a film? -- of an original broadcast

Notes on the Remaster
August 2018
Obviously there has been a great loss that leaves an irreparable void in the musical firmament of our world, but as we know the only way to memorialize the giants is to play the music, so here we are. This tape's been around for a while and I always loved the performance, but felt it was imbalanced and that Aretha's voice was a bit buried in the orchestral maelstrom of brass and horns. So I sat down when she passed this morning and spent the day excavating it from the soup so it'd be more prominent and audible. I used Sound Forge 11's Graphic EQ and Graphics Dynamics tools, and increased the left channel volume to create a better balance with more lead vocal in the mix. I repaired the dropout in the transition between Dr. Feelgood and Spirit In the Dark to be less egregiously disturbing, chopped off the filler track at the end of the original files, which seemed to have nothing at all to do with this performance (I think it was Traffic, and I have no idea how it got there, but no matter), and tracked the medleys into separate files. I created a new cover, made new fingerprints, and got everything titled and tagged properly as well. I also clarified who is playing on it and amended this text file.

This is a stunner of a set from the Aretha & King Curtis "Live at the Fillmore" era, taped as they both were just a few months before Curtis was so tragically murdered. We are all devastated that The Queen has left us, but hopefully this reworking of this magical tape will turn a little of that grief into the necessary celebration of a life lived as well as a human life can be lived. Farewell to Aretha Franklin -- an artist whose music will never, ever die -- and enjoy.--EN
