*Taper Notes*
After to listening to Team Dirty South's stream of the Friday show and finding out afterward that more Saturday tickets had been released, willSFC and I decided to make a cheap up to Nashville from the Shoalsfor night two. Glad we did. It was as strong a show as Friday. Thanks to Matt and Cole of the DBT crew for assisting the audio/video tapers.

Bobby Keys and The Sufferin' Bastards opened the show and were fantastic. The set was a very tiny sample of some of the great cuts Bobby has played on over the years.

I like the Truckers with David Barbe. The band sounds heavier on tracks like "Buttholeville," "Lookout Mountain" and "Play it All Night Long."  Like Friday, the band brought out some gems like "Pin Hits the Shell," "Daddy Learned to Fly" and "Goode's Field Road."

The Cure - Live Emerald City, NJ. 1980

The Cure - Live Emerald City,
Cherry Hill, NJ.
April 10, 1980
Very Good to Excellent Audience Recording @160

This is the first show in the US as pointed out by Robert Smith himself after a few tracks. There were several changes to the lyrics, but really minor ones as that was just one line here and there. Pretty good show overall but a few mistakes on keyboards which made Robert to comment : "We're not playing very well tonight... Well some of us are". Surprisingly, Boys Don't Cry didn't appear on the handwritten setlist from that night, but they played it anyway.

A journalist by the name of Van Gosse happened to be there and recorded the entire set. He recently re-discovered the lost tape(s) and shared it with the interwebz. Of the tape, Gosse writes:

“Way back, when I started writing about music (thanks to Davitt Sigerson), I interviewed lots of people and occasionally taped shows, so I could listen to them again.   So….in April 1980, Melody Maker gave me a big assignment to trail The Cure on their first US tour, and write about them.  Their publicist, Rhonda, took me to their US debut, at Emerald City in Cherry Hill, NJ, and I taped the attached.   Pretty great stuff!  They were releasing ‘A Forest,’ but still played all the original stuff, including ‘Killing an Arab’ as the encore.  The MM went on strike and my piece never ran, but it was a good time.  I remember what a hard case was Robert Smith, very determined, nothing sentimental or artsy about him. Below are my two pieces that did run, in the Voice and a short live review in the MM.  And the show itself, thanks to SFJ for compressing and cleaning up.”

**Supplied Notes**
Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.
He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honor his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.
Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

Enrico Rava Quartet - Live Rome 1980

Enrico Rava Quartet - Live Rome 1980
Rome, Italy,
March 16, 1980
Matrix recording @ 320

Enrico Rava (born 20 August 1939 in Trieste, Italy), is a prolific jazz trumpeter and arguably one of the best known Italian jazz musicians. He originally played trombone, changing to the trumpet after hearing Miles Davis. His first commercial work was as a member of Gato Barbieri's Italian quintet in the mid-1960s; in the late 1960s he was a member of Steve Lacy's group. In 1967 Rava moved to New York City, and one month later became a member of the group Gas Mask, a group that had one LP on Tonsil Records in 1970. He has played with artists such as Carla Bley, Jeanne Lee, Paul Motian, Lee Konitz and Roswell Rudd. Chiefly an exponent of bebop jazz, Enrico Rava has also played successfully in avant-garde settings. His style may partly recall Kenny Wheeler's in its spareness and lightness of tone, albeit Rava's is harmonically simpler.

In the 1970s and 1980s he worked with Pat Metheny, Michel Petrucciani, John Abercrombie, Joe Henderson, Richard Galliano, Miroslav Vitouš, Andrea Centazzo, Joe Lovano, Gil Evans and Cecil Taylor.

Tool - Sober

This is my feeling on the world, the nation, politics
and life in general...

There's a shadow just behind me,
shrouding every step I take,
making every promise empty,
pointing every finger at me.
Waiting like a stalking butler
who upon the finger rests.
Murder now the path is must we
just because the son has come.

Jesus, won't you fucking whistle
something but the past and done?
Jesus, won't you fucking whistle
something but the past and done?

Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start this over.
Why can't we drink forever?
I just want to start things over.

I am just a worthless liar.
I am just an imbecile.
I will only complicate you.
Trust in me and fall as well.
I will find a center in you.

I will chew it up and leave,
I will work to elevate you
just enough to bring you down.

Mother Mary won't you whisper
something but the past and done
Mother Mary won't you whisper
something but the past and done.

Why can't we not be sober?
I Just want to start this over.
Why can't we sleep forever?
I Just want to start things over.

I am just a worthless liar.
I am just an imbecile.
I will only complicate you.
Trust in me and fall as well.
I will find a center in you.
I will chew it up and leave.

Trust me. Trust me. Trust me. Trust me. Trust Me.

Why can't we not be sober?
I Just want to start things over.
Why can't we sleep forever?
I Just want to start this over.

I want what I want.
I want what I want.
I want what I want.
I want what I want.

**Original Notes**
The Italian title comes from a 1980s number in the Uncle Meat movie and on the Uncle Meat CD re-issue; an Italian has translated it as "I got a big bunch of dick". An Italian re-issue is cowardly renamed A Snail in My Nose.

This seems to be hodge-podged together from tapes of two shows that night (that goes also for the Freaks & Motherfuckers boot). Tracks 1-5 are probably from the early show and tracks 8-14 from the late show (?). Tracks 6-7 could be from both. The "Interlude" includes "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head", and track 13 includes 40 seconds of "Inca Roads" (a very early version, of course, with only the 16th-note theme) and 24 seconds of "Easy Meat". Around the track break between tracks 11 and 12 there are some "Mudshark Variations".

"Sharleena" is the same performance as on Hotel Dixie. Tracks 11-14 are the same recording as side two of Freaks & Motherfuckers and Hotel Dixie.

The location and date of this show is up for grabs. Beat the Boots claims it as Fillmore East 11-May-1970, which is wrong; the Flo & Eddie band had not been formed then. According to fanzine T'Mershi Duween, the tape the boots are struck from is recorded at the Fillmore West and sometimes identified as 24-May-1970, sometimes as 6-Nov-1970. (As Mike Phillips points out, Zappa does talk about "the speech-impediment lounge at the Fillmore East" during "Does This Kind of Life Look Interesting to You?".) Some people identify them as 14-Dec-1970, but according to Miles' book A Visual Documentary, Zappa was in Europe in December 1970, which has given rise to the date 14-Nov-1970. The Hotel Dixie boot claims to be from that date - but is it the same recording? Pick your favourite.

A Snail in My Nose has a different, imagainative track listing on the cover, but everyone says its a copy of Tengo 'na Minchia Tanta. The cover picture is a black and white snail on a colourful background. The Lost Rose CD cover has a sepia head-and-upper-body photo of Zappa playing guitar with a blurred portrait of him in the background.

To Kill A King - Word Of Mouth [EP]

To Kill A King - Word Of Mouthe [EP]

To Kill A King is a band out of London. “Word of Mouth” is a 6 song EP that was released in July of this year. Their sound is something like relaxed indie rock meets folk, but with a twist. The first association that came to this author’s mind was Noah and the Whale, because the lead singer has that same engagingly waxy vocal style where the pace often falls somewhere between singing and talking emotively. Plus, they take on some of life’s larger issues, or at least more heartfelt issues, in their lyrics. Paul Simon also comes to mind (except they don’t talk in coded lyrics). They employ developed song progressions, so be sure to let the songs entirely play out before you decide if you like them. It’s very sincere and well thought out music. Funeral is a toe-tapping number that builds to an enjoyable crescendo of sorts and show what their version of pent up energy sounds like. Beside She Says is meant to be a reflective & mellow song, but with a few different tempo & styles are used to access that feeling. It’s a very dynamic song in that manner. Wolves is a fun one, it begins with a playful country guitar riff, but then weaves it’s way into a strutter that might cajole you into some movement.
~Sean Brna

Remaster Notes:
This was a show  received from a friend in the mid-80s. There was some wear on the master - Tracks 1 & 14 show evidence of minor stretching at the start. For  a radio show it's not that great a mix either. However, as I had never seen this show on anyone's list I transferred it and seeded it as a 2 disc set on STG.
My original flacs are now lost, so this has been ripped from my audio copy, burned from the original waves. Some minor editing has been done to make this fit on one disc: d1t06 has been removed and d1t06 and d1t13, which are other tuning tracks, have been edited in length. The last track has also been faded early, but the radio announcer added back on for historical sake. I have also removed the minor dropout in t03 and a number of loud pops and clicks, though some remain. Volume levels have also been boosted by 25%. Sorry, but my remastering skills stop there!!So, not a pristine show, but an important historical document. Interestingly, the setlist follows much of the previous years Spirit of '76 album (released in '75!!) and omits the Farther Along material.

The tape was transferred using a Nakamichi DR-2 cassette deck to Sony TCD-60ES  DAT recorder at 44.1KHz with Super Bit Mapping (which really improves the clarity of the sound), before being transferred to CD.  The recording is mono, but clear and with significant detail

Notes from original poster: The Show  This evening's performance in the middle of the 2nd American Selling England tour was frustrating and brilliant at the same time. The equipment problems that plagued this tour were particularly bad this night, and at times you can hear Gabriel and Collins losing some of their usual tolerance in the face of continual microphone problems. Gabriel comments at one point that "we'll go professional next week", and Collins; "I bet you wish you'd gone to the pictures". The intro to 'I Know What I Like' is aborted at one point.   Never-the-less, this is a great musical performance, and one of the better recordings of a show from this tour. Firth of Fifth is given a particularly emotive performance, and Phil varies some of his vocal lines in More Fool Me nicely.
There is also an interview with Mike and Phil, including the end of their performance in the studio of 'More Fool Me', which was broadcast on Boston's WBCN radio, and which seems to be previously unknown.  The Recording  This recording has been remastered from Steve Hopkins' transcription of his master tape, which he generously sent me. The recording was made on a Sony TC-55 with built in condenser microphone. The tape was transferred using a Nakamichi DR-2 cassette deck to Sony TCD-60ES  DAT recorder at 44.1KHz with Super Bit Mapping (which really improves the clarity of the sound), before being transferred to CD.  The recording is mono, but clear and with significant detail. The only limitation with this tape is that it does not represent the entire show, as The Battle of Epping Forest, and possibly Horizons (if they performed it this evening) are missing. There are also a few minor edits in the recording, and one of these may have omitted Phil's one-handed drum solo, which one is tempted to think they must have performed given the amount of technical difficulties.  This recording has been widely in circulation, most commonly through the Highland disc 'More Fool Me'. I don't have a copy of this, but my impression is that while it is a complete transcription sourced from a low generation tape, it is very bright in the upper midrange, and lacking in richness in the bass. The master tape by contrast, is more balanced overall, and with a rich bass presence. The afternoon before the show, Phil and Mike came into Boston's WCBN studios, performed 'More Fool Me' and gave a short interview. This interview has not been previously in circulation, but Steve had a recording of it, unfortunately missing all but the last 50 secs or so of 'More Fool Me'. But at least it exists and is included in this release.   The Remaster  I took only one channel of Steve's transcription, so as to optimize for mono. I denoised the recording minimally, mostly just to sharpen up the treble a little. Eq balance was pretty good, although I attenuated the lower midrange a little around 200Hz to compensate for a slight turned on and off during some of the technical hold ups in the show to provide a little more continuity. I cannot pick the point at which Epping Forest is missing from the recording, I assume it must have been played, especially as Phil and Mike comment in the interview about the show running nearly two hours - this recording comes in at just over 90 mins.  There are also a few squeaky noises on the master recording, which may come from the cassette recorder, or even the seating at the venue. These sounds were quite distracting, so I have removed them. There was a very noticeable one at the beginning of Tony's piano intro to Firth of Fifth, and others in the opening section of Musical Box.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood - Live @ The Pour House- Charleston, SC Nov. 10, 2011

I'm quite fond of this band. It's the kind of band I'd love to be a part of... they remind me of a tougher, leaner Grateful Dead.  Chris Robinson's vision of a travelling musical commune bringing music to the folks, on their own terms, without regard for making money, is a rather altruistic ideal not often found anymore. Especially
considering Robinson's history with the Black Crowes. I dig the the Crowes but this band appeals to me even more. You can just feel how
much they enjoy what they do. Yes, the jams are sometimes long and loose, but the energy from the band for what they are playing is definitely palpable. Covers? Originals? It's all good. To quote Robinson from a recent Uncut interview that accompanied the review for their fantastic new album, Big Moon Ritual: "Will CRB tour the UK?" Robinson: "We'd like to. It's hard. People ask us, why do you play so many dates in California? Well, because you can drive around with a pound of weed and not get in trouble. Let's face it, we have priorities as a band."

'Nuff said, Chris. Keep on keepin' on...

Enjoy. Or not.

Spooky Tooth - 1974 Agora Ballroom Cleveland, OH

SPOOKY TOOTH - XX-XX-1974 (exact date unknown) Agora Ballroom Cleveland, OH

Type: Bootleg
Format: Flac
Source: Unknown
Quality: A- - B+
Download size: 1 file 263 mb
Lineage: Unknown source > CD-R > EAC > FLAC (8)

Notes. This is a most excellent show by Spooky Tooth. Some Excellent guitar on "Old as I was born" (Mick Jones). I highly recommend grabing this show especially if you have never heard this band live. Grab it and give it a listen you will not be disappointed.

Notes from Original poster:
This is Spooky Tooth at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland OH from 1974.  Probably an FM broadcast, but no specific info was provided in the info file I originally got with this.  I d/l this from Pink Robert last year - many thanks to him for sharing his fabulous music collection with us.I have attached a sound sample, and also frequency analysis and spectral views of one song, kindly provided by the Mods.  There is significant drop-off after 8K, but it is not "lossy" sourced.

I checked various sites such as All Music Guide, Spooky Tooth discography sites, and Amazon.com to see if any official releases contained any material from this recording.  The only official release of live material I could find was the BBC release, which includes some of their BBC recordings, and also a couple of cuts from an unknown show in 1970.  There is another bootleg called "First Tooth", which contains some of the songs from this show, but not all of them.  All the references I could find show "First Tooth" to be a bootleg, and not an official release.

The Band:
Mike Patto--Vocals & Keyboard
Gary Wright--Vocals & Keyboard
Mick Jones--Guitar
Val Burke--Bass
Bryson Graham--Drums

Set list:
1 Waiting For The Wind
2 Cotton Growing Man
3 Old As I Was Born

In The News...

The Federal Bailout That Saved Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney likes to say he won't "apologize" for his success in business. But what he never says is "thank you" – to the American people – for the federal bailout of Bain & Company that made so much of his outsize wealth possible.

According to the candidate's mythology, Romney took leave of his duties at the private equity firm Bain Capital in 1990 and rode in on a white horse to lead a swift restructuring of Bain & Company, preventing the collapse of the consulting firm where his career began. When The Boston Globe reported on the rescue at the time of his Senate run against Ted Kennedy, campaign aides spun Romney as the wizard behind a "long-shot miracle," bragging that he had "saved bank depositors all over the country $30 million when he saved Bain & Company."

In fact, government documents on the bailout obtained by Rolling Stone show that the legend crafted by Romney is basically a lie. The federal records, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, reveal that Romney's initial rescue attempt at Bain & Company was actually a disaster – leaving the firm so financially strapped that it had "no value as a going concern." Even worse, the federal bailout ultimately engineered by Romney screwed the FDIC – the bank insurance system backed by taxpayers – out of at least $10 million. And in an added insult, Romney rewarded top executives at Bain with hefty bonuses at the very moment that he was demanding his handout from the feds.

Great disc! The sound quality is exceptional IMO, it almost sounds like it
was recorded in a studio setup.

Known Flaws:
A high pitched tone which was present on my CDR copy at roughly 0:12 - 0:23
of track 01 was edited out using EAC's wave editing function.
A 1-second pause at about 14:19-14:20 on the master dt06 was edited out also using EAC.

Many thanks to original poster for this one.

Bill Hicks - Live Chicago 1989

Bill Hicks - Live Chicago 1989
aka - I'm Sorry Folks
Excellent Unknown Source @ 128

The 53 minute crucifixion of Bill Hicks

The audio recording of this Chicago performance goes by the title I'm Sorry Folks and the bootleg video is referred to as "The Infamous Chicago Show." During this particular performance, Bill was having a bad night. Having endured a legion of bad days at work, my sympathies immediately went out to Hicks. He's on the stage, things are clearly not gelling, and to make matters worse members of the audience are heckling him. It's not that Bill Hicks couldn't handle hecklers, but these people hit him from a point of view that was like cryptonite for Bill -- the lame, moronic mewlings of peons drunk and on the town, 9-to-5-ers on a Saturday night hurling verbal bile balloons that wouldn't pass muster in any schoolyard of note.

Bob Marley Live In Dortmund 1980

Why should we let them over at the Wagon have all the fun? This here place is where I was born. So for all of you fans of Mr. Marley here's a little something that has never been released in the U.S. But it's easy to see why. Not what you would call a sounboard recording at all. But not too bad quality wise. And besides not a lot of stuff out there with the song Zion Train (a favorite) on it. Also check this out on Amazon and see what it's going for. See scans @ 224Kbps. Gene Clark - Live @ Ebett's Field-Denver, CO - Feb. 19,1975

The late, and oh-so-great Gene Clark. Former Byrd who was hugely influential in the very beginnings of what we now refer to as Alt Country or Americana. Clark had as much or more to do with "Cosmic American Music" as his contemporary and bandmate, Gram Parsons. This is a fine sounding show with the band and Clark putting in a high, lonesome performance. I love this kinda shit.
