I was rather interested to discover that vintage video footage of the Stranglers' infamous 1978 open-air gig in London's Battersea Park, complete with male and female strippers onstage during Nice 'n' Sleazy, has been posted on YouTube (in the restricted section which requires users to log in).  It's been there for almost nine months now, so evidently YouTube are perfectly cool with it, which is reassuringly non-uptight.

What strikes me most about the video is how preposterously tame it now looks  -  almost like a scene out of the once-outrageous but now rather embarrassing Hair.  In fact, it's not just tame, it's positively cheesy.  And yet there's a sort of innocent charm to it, almost of the girl next door variety, which on the one hand is faintly endearing but which on the other hand makes it even harder to get one's head around the fact that way back in '78 this was considered a "sexy" occurrence.

Personally I've never quite understood how anyone except a twelve-year-old boy could possibly get turned on by anything as naff and laboured as striptease.  But this particular bit of videotape certainly stands up as a quaint social document of what used to be considered outrageous  -  and as one of the (female) viewers has commented underneath the video, it's also good to see a bunch of young ladies whose wazongas haven't been 'enhanced' to bursting point by having unnatural substances shoehorned into them.

Bad Religion - Suffer {1993}

Bad Religion - Suffer -1993
Studio Recording @192
{Out Of Print}

Bad Religion - How Much Is Enough
Tell me can the hateful chain be broken?
Production and consumption define our hollow lives.
Avarice has led us 'cross the ocean,
Toward a land that's better, much more bountiful and wide.
When will mankind finally come to realize
His surfeit has become his demise?
How much is enough to kill yourself?
That quantity is known today, as we blow ourselves away.
Tell me is there anything so sure?
Rapacity, tenacity, capacity for more!
Like a dog that feeds until he suffers,
The infirmity of man is brought on by his selfish cure.
When will mankind finally come to realize
His surfeit has become his demise?
How much is enough to kill yourself?
That quantity is known today, as we blow ourselves away.

  Always caring more about song craft than aggression, Bad Religion basically created So-Cal melodic punk/hardcore and without them, bands like AFI and Pennywise would simply not exist. Their sound, at the time, was totally unique. They managed to incorporate melodies and pop sensibilities with hyper-intelligent sociopolitical lyrics and blistering hardcore tempos. The result was divine, and it is shown in all its glory on Suffer, the best and quintessential Bad Religion record.
  High-minded. Vitriolic. Probably kick-started thousands of bands. The lyrics to this hit you like a brick to the back of the head, but a brick that you have come to love and cherish.

Track List:
1. You Are (The Government)
2. 1,000 More Fools
3. How Much Is Enough?
4. When?
5. Give You Nothing
6. Land Of Competition
7. Forbidden Beat

10. Delirium Of Disorder
11. Part II (The Numbers Game)
12. What Can You Do?

Motorpsycho - Demon Box -1993 {Out of Print}

Motorpsycho - Demon Box
Studio Recordings @VBR
{Out Of Print}

 Motorpsycho is a band from Trondheim, Norway. Their music can generally be defined as psychedelic rock, but they also mix in elements from metal, jazz, rock, pop and many other musical styles. The members of the band are Bent Sæther (b. February 18, 1969, bass/vocals), Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan (b. December 31, 1969, guitar/vocals) and Kenneth Kapstad (b. April 20, 1979 drums). Until March 2005, Håkon Gebhardt (b. June 21, 1969, drums) was also an integral part of the band. A press release concerning his departure is published at the unofficial homepage. In December 2007 it was announced that former Gåte drummer Kenneth Kapstad was the new drummer in the band as well as an official band member.

Formed in the late eighties as an alternative metal band (They picked their name after seeing the Russ Meyer film of the same name as part of a Russ Meyer triple bill - there was already a band named after Mudhoney and a band named after Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! - the other two films on the bill), Motorpsycho soon developed a unique blend of grunge, heavy metal and indierock, as well as incorporating the sonic noise experiments of associated member Deathprod. The hugely ambitious, progressive double album "Demon Box" (1993) followed a series of low-profile EPs and albums, earning the band a nomination for a Norwegian Grammy, and secured a loyal following in Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands as well as in Scandinavia.

Track List:
1. Waiting for the One (2:50)
2. Nothing to Say (5:18)
3. Feedtime (5:15)
4. Sunchild (4:05)
5. Tuesday Morning (4:22)
6. All Is Loneliness (5:08)
7. Come on In (2:40)
8. Step Inside Again (3:39)
9. Demon Box (17:06)
10. Babylon (2:30)
11. Junior (4:34)
12. Plan #1 (7:39)
13. Sheer Profoundity (3:37)
14. The One Who Went Away (3:13)

This band (as it sounds today) kind of reminds me of a cross between Kyuss, Soundgarden and The Melvins.
Enjoy!!

Elliott Smith - Live Washington, DC. 1998

Elliott Smith  - Live at The Black Cat
 April 17, 1998
Washington, DC.
Soundboard @flac

No one could honestly claim to be surprised when they heard Elliott Smith had committed suicide. Plenty of folky singer-songwriters have a reputation for making introspective, melancholy music, but none quite like Smith's. To some critics he was Mr Misery - a pun on Miss Misery, the song from the soundtrack of Good Will Hunting for which he was Oscar-nominated in 1998. He was the "unhappiest man in the land", a singer you didn't so much listen to as commiserate with.

According to his friend, singer Mary Lou Lord, Smith was the heir to the tragic mantle of her former boyfriend, Kurt Cobain: he was making records for "the sad kids". His gloom was more than sulky posturing: when Smith sang about heroin addiction or alcoholism or depression, he was singing about things he had experienced first-hand.

The cover of his second, eponymous solo album, released in 1995, features a grainy image of bodies falling from a high building. Another, 1996's Either/Or, was named after a book by Kierkegaard, in which the philosopher posited that the aesthete would eventually find himself in a state of despair. As one tribute article wryly noted, you couldn't say that Smith didn't warn you.

That is not to say the circumstances of his death were not shocking. Last year, just before lunchtime on Tuesday, October 21, Smith apparently had an argument with his girlfriend, fellow musician Jennifer Chiba, at their home in Silverlake, Los Angeles. As the row got worse, Smith threatened to commit suicide.

Like most of Smith's close friends, Chiba was used to him making melodramatic threats about ending his life. After all, this was a man who, when he decided to relocate from Portland to Brooklyn in the late 1990s, bade farewell to his Oregon friends by informing them that it was likely he would never see them again because he was "probably going to kill himself".

Chiba ignored him and locked herself in the bathroom. She then heard a scream. Returning to the living room, she found Smith standing with his back to her. When he turned around, she saw a kitchen knife sticking out of his chest. Smith had stabbed himself in the heart. Despite emergency surgery, he was pronounced dead 20 minutes after arriving at hospital. He was 34 years old.

St. Vincent - Live Austin City Limits Festival 2014

St. Vincent - Live Austin City Limits Festival
October 10, 2014
Austin, Texas
Soundboard @ 320

Featuring Annie Erin Clark whose St. Vincent project gained praise for emotionally intricate songwriting and the blending of rock, jazz, electronic, and classical touches.
AMG

Clark's run as one of the past decade's most distinct and innovative guitarists, though she's never one to showboat. Her harmonic-filled style bears the influence of jazz (she picked up a lot of her signature tricks from her uncle, the jazz guitarist Tuck Andress) and prog rock, two genres known to embrace sprawl. But Clark's freak-outs are tidy, modular and architecturally compact—like King Crimson rewritten by Le Corbusier.
