The Orthodox church of Sveti Luka or Saint Luke, Kotor

Although this is a small church, it is significant for the town. The church was not damaged by forced of nature or war, she looks protected by God. It contains an orthodox altar and a catholic one.

We are pleased with the first picture showing an open bell construction of the church tower against a mountain background. Inside the altars were decorated with gold and frescos. These are the only important pieces of art in the church and chapel; it is so small that only a small group of people can attend a religious celebration.

Alhoewel dit een kleine kerk is, heeft ze toch een belangrijke plaats ingenomen in Kotor. De kerk werd niet beschadigd door natuurgeweld of oorlog en lijkt beschermd door God. Binnen staat zowel een Orthodox als Katholiek altaar. 

We zijn blij met onze eerste foto waarop een open klok constructie in de kerktoren tegen een berg achtergrond te zien is. Binnen in de kerk zijn de altaren versierd met goud en fresco's. Dit zijn de enige kunstvoorwerpen in de kerk en kapel, de ruimte is zo klein dat enkel kleine groepen een misviering kunnen bijwonen.

Pfarrkirche or the Saint Peter and Paul church in Oberammergau

On the information board of this church we can read that it originates from 1749 and was built up in a Bavarian-Schwabische Rococo style. The column in front of the church tower and the cemetery are impressive. The cross of the top of a chapel roof with the Alps in the background was worth taking a picture.

The interior holds several detailed altars and next to every two rows of seats there stood a kind of umbrella. Strange, we never saw this before. The organ, fresco’s, statues, chandeliers and ceiling all look amazing. You would never expect such a fantastic church in a small mountain village with only 5.000 inhabitants.

Op het informatiebord voor deze kerk lezen we dat deze werd ingewijd in 1749 en gebouwd in een Beiers-Schwabische Rococo stijl. De zuil voor de kerktoren en het kerkhof zijn indrukwekkend. Het kruis boven op een grafkapel met een Alpenberg op de achtergrond was zeker een foto waard. 

Binnen in de kerk vind je enkele groots versierde altaars en bij elke twee rijen zitplaatsen staat een gesloten parasol. Heel raar, want zoiets hebben we nog nooit gezien. Het orgel, de fresco's, standbeelden, kandelaars en het plafond zijn ongelooflijk. We hadden niet verwacht zo’n fantastische kerk te vinden in een klein Alpendorpje van ongeveer 5.000 inwoners.

Serbian Orthodox Saint Nicholas church in Kotor

This is a very young church built in 1909 and on the second floor hangs a Serbian flag. It shows the close link between Serbia and Montenegro. Just above the entrance you see a marvellous mosaic. Inside the church there are many frescos. The silverware is impressive ranging from small and large candle holders to enormous chandeliers.

The most amazing piece of art is the altar wall at the back of the church. It is dark brown with super paintings. Normally, we like bright colourful paintings but these darker versions are absolutely stunning. At the church there were several women with children begging. It looks like a poor region. We just had to give something to these people.

Dit is een zeer jonge kerk gebouwd in 1909 en op het tweede verdiep hangt een soort Servische vlag. Het toont de nauwe banden tussen Servië en Montenegro aan. Juist boven het inkomportaal zie je een prachtige mozaïek. Binnen in de kerk vind je vele fresco’s. Het zilverwerk is indrukwekkend en varieert van kleine en grote kandelaars tot enorme sierlusters. 

Het meest ongelooflijke kunstwerk is de altaarmuur aan de achterkant van de kerk. Deze is donker bruin met zeer mooie schilderwerken. Normaal houden we meer van schilderijen met meer licht en kleur maar deze matte versies zijn ook echt verbazingwekkend. Bij de kerk waren er enkele vrouwen met kinderen aan het bedelen. Het lijkt een arme regio. We moesten toch wel iets geven aan deze mensen..

The Karlskirche in Vienna, an unique baroque church with artificial lake

The Karlskirche in Vienna, at the Kreuzherrengasse is a unique piece of Baroque architecture. This is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. The interior is partially being renovated but you should still visit the church. It is amazing. The paintings, frescos, the statues, decorations, sculptures, there is just so much to be observed. The Karlskirche was built from 1715 till 1735 which is only 20 years. This is a real achievement of architect Fischer von Erlach. The artificial lake in front of the church creates a special view, when I first saw it, I had to think about the set up of the Taj Mahal in India. The park in front of the church is small and nice during daytime. During the evenings and at night you find many homeless people here, alcohol and drug addicts. The park should be avoided when it is dark.

De Karlskirche in Wenen, gelegen aan de Kreuzherrengasse is een unieke barokkerk. Het is één van de mooiste kerken die ik ooit gezien heb. De binnenkant wordt momenteel gerenoveerd maar dit neemt niet weg dat je deze kerk zeker moet bezoeken. Het is ongelooflijk. De schilderijen, fresco’s, beeldhouwwerken, decoraties, standbeelden, er zijn zoveel mooie kunstwerken te aanschouwen. De Karlskirche werd gebouwd op een termijn van 20 jaar tussen 1715 en 1735. Dit is een echte prestatie van architect Fischer von Erlach. Het artificiële meer voor de kerk heeft het een speciaal aanzicht, het deed me onmiddellijk denken aan de Taj Mahal in India. Het park bij de kerk is klein en leuk om in te wandelen gedurende de dag. ’s Avonds en ’s nachts vind je hier vele daklozen, drank- en drugsverslaafden, een plaats die je beter kan mijden als het donker wordt..
