Where is the oldest synagogue in Spain? In Barcelona, the Shlomo Ben Adret

The Synagogue was the most important religious building of the Jewish district of Barcelona Call. An artist impression of the original temple complex shows how big it really was. We don't know when it was constructed but it is assumed more than 2.000 years ago.

The end of the Call district and the non tolerance of Jews in Barcelona took place in the 14th century when the Spanish Inquisition held Jews responsible for the plague outburst. Jews were forced to become Christians, had to abandon their houses or where murdered.

It was only 600 years later on 1996, they found back parts of Shlomo Ben Adret synagogue deep under the ground, even lower that the current basements. How is this possible? Looking at the artist impression everything is above ground. Well during the centuries the city changed by natural destruction of weak buildings. They fell by fire or the elements of nature. New houses were built on the remains of the ruins. For this reason the current city was built on a higher street level.

Inside the synagogue you find traditional Jewish products for sale and a praying room which is still actively used. We particularly liked the colourful David Star made of stained glass.

De synagoge was het belangrijkste religieuze gebouw van de Joodse wijk Call in Barcelona. Een schilderij die een artiest impressie weergeeft van de originele tempel toont hoe groot de synagoge werkelijk was. We weten niet wanneer ze werd gebouwd maar veronderstellen dat dit meer als 2.000 geleden moet geweest zijn.

Het einde van Call en de opstand tegen de Joden begon aan het einde van de 14de eeuw. De Spaanse Inquisitie hield de Joden verantwoordelijk voor het uitbreken van de pest. Joden moesten vergiffenis vragen en zich bekeren tot het christendom, vluchten uit Call of werden vermoord.

Pas na 600 jaar in 1996 ontdekte men een gedeelte van de Shlomo Ben Adret synagoge diep onder de grond, lager dan de huidige kelders. Hoe is dit mogelijk? Op het schilderij is de tempel volledig bovengronds. Gedurende de eeuwen verdwenen vele gebouwen door brand of natuurgeweld. Bovenop de ruïnes werden nieuwe straten en huizen gebouwd. Hierdoor ligt het huidige straatniveau van de stad Barcelona veel hoger. 

Binnen in de synagoge verkoopt men traditionele Joodse producten en is er een gebedsruimte die terug actief wordt gebruikt. In het bijzonder vonden we de bont gekleurde David Ster uit brandglas heel mooi.

Learning about the Jewish culture in the Prague Synagogues

All Synagogues in the Prague Josefov district are part of the Jewish Museum. With one entry fee, you can enter most Synagogues except for the Old-New Synagogue. We were very disappointed that inside the buildings we were not allowed to take any pictures. So we added a few photos which were already available on the internet with their source location.

We started at the Maisel Synagogue build in the 16th century under the lead of mayor Maisel. It is currently used as a museum. Our second visit was to the Pinkas Synagogue which is now a memorial for Jews murdered by the Nazis. On the walls inside the rooms, the names of 80.000 Jews are written who died during the war. Here they also have an exhibit of children’s drawings. Behind the Pinkas Synagogue you find the Old Jewish Cemetery and the Ceremonial Hall.

The most impressive building was the Spanish Synagogue in Moorish style. The interior is fantastic with its golden elements and dome. It is known as one of the most beautiful Synagogues of the world. If you only have time to visit one of these buildings, I would recommend the Spanish Synagogue.

Alle synagogen in de Josefov wijk te Praag maken deel uit van het Joodse Museum. Met één inkomticket, kan je in de meeste synagogen binnen behalve de Oud-Nieuw synagoge. We waren zwaar ontgoocheld dat we nergens in de gebouwen foto’s mochten trekken. Hierdoor hebben we enkele bestaande foto’s van op het internet toegevoegd met bronvermelding. 

We begonnen aan de Maisel synagoge die werd gebouwd gedurende de 16de eeuw onder de leiding van burgemeester Maisel en nu een museum is. Ons tweede bezoek was aan de Pinkas synagoge, een herdenkingsplaats voor Joden vermoord door de Nazis gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Op de binnenmuren staan de namen van 80.000 gestorven mensen geschreven. Er was hier ook een tentoonstelling van kindertekeningen. Achter de Pinkas synagoge ligt het Oude Joodse kerkhof en Ceremonial Hall. 

De Spaanse synagoge in Moorse stijl was het meest indrukwekkende gebouw. Het interieur is gewoon fantastisch met zijn gouden elementen en koepel. Het staat dan ook bekend als één van de mooiste synagogen van de wereld. Als je slechts de tijd hebt om één van deze gebouwen te bezoeken, raad ik de Spaanse synagoge aan..
