In the cruise port of St. John’s, Antigua

With clear weather and sun, you enjoy the Caribbean at its best. Here in Antigua, we are docked in port with the Celebrity Eclipse. Next to us, we see the new ship of the German cruise line "Mein Schiff 3". It also looks nice.

From the deck we see adventure and thrill seeker boats passing by like the Sea Escape. It can fly over the water at high speed and in calm shallow waters it is designed to look at the underwater world via a glass bottom.

The town of St. John’s is colorful with many shops and restaurants close to the quay. In the background you see the two towers of the cathedral which is now closed, due to the damage caused by a hurricane in 2008. We are preparing to go for a swim on one of the amazing beaches of the island.

Met open lucht en zon, kan je de Caraïbische eilanden op hun best beleven. Hier in Antigua liggen we aangemeerd met de Celebrity Eclipse. Naast ons ligt het nieuwe Duitse schip, "Mein Schiff 3". Het ziet er ook heel mooi uit.

Van op het dek zien we avonturen- en speedboten zoals de Sea Escape langsvaren. Deze kan over het water vliegen tegen hoge snelheid en voor in kalme ondiepe wateren heeft het een glazen bodem om de onderwaterwereld te aanschouwen. 

Het stadje van St. John's is kleurrijk met vele winkels en restaurants in de omgeving van de pier. Op de achtergrond kan je de twee torens zien van de nu gesloten kathedraal. Deze werd zwaar beschadigd door een orkaan in 2008. Wij maken ons klaar voor te gaan zwemmen op één van de fantastische stranden van Antigua.

The cruise port of St. Johns, Antigua

St. John’s has a small port in a bay surrounded by luxurious villas looking down from the hills on the sailing boats. Before getting of the ship, we have breakfast on the open terrace of the Celebrity Eclipse. We have a nice view because the Oceanview Café terrace is located on deck 14. The water is clear and blue, shops and bars colourful trying to attract cruise passengers. After our adventures on the island, the ships sails away in the sun set.

St. John’s heeft een kleine haven in een baai omringt door luxe villa’s die van uit de heuvels neer kijken op de zeilbootjes. Vooraleer we van boort gaan, genieten we van ons ontbijt op het terras van de Celebrity Eclipse. We hebben een mooi zicht daar het Oceanview Café terras gelegen is op dek 14. Het water is helder en blauw, kleurvolle bars en winkels trachten cruisepassagiers te lokken. Na onze avonturen op het eiland vaart het schip weg in de zonsondergang..

General Impressions of St. John’s, Antigua

St. John’s is the capital of Antigua. The city is offering tourists some shopping opportunities but everything is expensive. Probably they want to make money the fast way and expect that people will only come once to their island. We have to admit that the local drawings and paintings were attractive. In the city you see several pirate images which is a popular topic since the Disney hit movies of “Pirates of the Caribbean”.

Also here the churches are in a poor state. The cathedral has been destroyed several times by earthquakes and hurricanes. A little bit outside the capital, the nature is amazing. Just have a look at the bay in the last three pictures.

St. John’s is de hoofdstad van Antigua. De stad biedt toeristen mogelijkheden tot winkelen maar alles is er duur. Waarschijnlijk wil men er snel veel geld verdienen aan rijke toeristen die toch maar één keer het eiland bezoeken. We moeten echter toegeven dat de tekeningen en schilderwerken er kleurrijk en fris uitzagen. In de stad zie je verschillende beeltenissen en poppen van piraten wat een populair onderwerp is sinds de Disney film successen van “Pirates of the Caribbean”. 

Ook hier zijn de kerken in slechte staat. De kathedraal werd verschillende keren vernietigd door aardbevingen en orkaneCn. Enkele kilometers buiten de hoofdstad is de natuur adembenemend, oordeel zelf op de laatste drie foto’s..
