Climbing the St. Rombouts Tower and Skywalk above Mechelen

In yesterday’s article, we showed you the interior of the St. Rombouts cathedral. Do you remember the opening above the organ? It is located next to this wooden wheel which is used to pull up materials into the tower. Looking down into the hole, you see the stained glass and the pipes of the organ. A glass covering prevents you from falling down. To reach this floor, we climbed 160 steps but we still have to conquer 378 steps to reach the top of this 97m high tower.

A little bit higher we look down on the wheel from the forge. Here they were repairing and moulding the church bells and carillon. It is the only Belfry in Belgium that has two carillons. The pictures show you the size of the bells and the complex mechanism of the carillon.

Our legs become a bit sauer but we finally reach the Skywalk which provides great views over the city of Mechelen. You can see that houses are built close to each other and that there are other churches in the city. The straight long road is the Mechelsesteenweg or Leuvensesteenweg, a main connection road between Leuven and Mechelen. When it is not foggy unlike today you can see the Atonium of Brussels. It’s time for a coffee, so we are going to go down again via the turning staircase. It goes a lot faster but you have to be careful not to get dizzy.

Gisteren schreven we over het interieur van de St. Rombouts kathedraal. Herinner je nog de opening boven het orgel? Deze ligt net naast dit houten wiel dat fungeert als kraan om materiaal naar boven te trekken. Als je naar beneden kijkt zie je het brandglas en de holle pijpen van het orgel. Een glazen ondergrond zorgt er voor dat men niet naar beneden kan vallen. Om dit verdiep te bereiken dien je 168 trappen te klimmen maar we moeten er nog eens 378 overwinnen om de top te bereiken van de 97m hoge toren. 

Een verdieping hoger, in de smidse kijken we neer op dit houten rad. In deze kamer smolt men klokken en voerde men herstellingen uit aan de beiaard. Dit is de enige kerk in België die twee beiaards heeft. Op de foto’s kan je zien hoe groot de klokken wel zijn en hoe complex het mechanisme van de beiaard is. 

Onze benen zijn aan het verzuren maar we bereiken de Skywalk op de top van de toren. Hier heb je prachtige vergezichten over de stad dichtbevolkte stad Mechelen met ook nog enkele andere kerken. De lange rechte straat is de Mechelsesteenweg of Leuvensesteenweg, de hoofdverbindingswieg tussen Mechelen en Leuven. Als het niet zo mistig is als vandaag kan je zelfs het Atonium van Brussel zien. Het is tijd voor een koffie, dus gaan we terug naar beneden via de draaiende trappen. Dit maal gaat het sneller maar toch moet je opletten dat je niet duizelig wordt van het vele draaien..

Historical houses and the St. Rombouts Cathedral, Mechelen

We are on the Main Square of Mechelen and face the St. Rombouts cathedral with its 97m high tower. The historical houses of the traffic free square are just fantastic. They look narrow and small compared to the cathedral but this is an illusion. They are true mansions with great facades and style. Here and on the Ijzerleen street, you find the most beautiful houses of Mechelen but at selling prices that will make you dizzy.

The interior of the cathedral has been restored and it all looks so perfect, the high arched ceiling, the stained glass art work, the organ and the wooden choir. Just above the organ you see a round opening, remember this, we will come back on that tomorrow when we write about our tower visit.

I have many memories of Mechelen because I lived near to this city in a village called Elewijt. Together with my parents, I attended a concert of Helmuth Lotti in this church. He recorded the album "Helmut Lotti Goes Classic II" here. Try to imagine the sound of a grand orchestra in this church, an experience I will never forget.

We staan op de Grote Markt van Mechelen en kijken in de richting van de St. Rombouts kathedraal met zijn 97m hoge toren. De historische huizen van het verkeersvrije plein zien er fantastisch uit. Ze lijken wel small en laag in vergelijking met de kathedraal maar dit is een illusie. Het zijn echte herenhuizen met prachtige gevels en stijl. Hier op deze markt en op de Ijzerleen vind je de mooiste huizen van de stad, ze zijn echter onbetaalbaar. 

Het interieur van de kathedraal is gerenoveerd en alles lijkt wel perfect, de hoge booggewelven, de sierramen, het orgel en het houten koorgedeelte. Juist boven het orgel zie je een ronde opening, hou dit in gedachten wanneer we morgen over ons bezoek aan de toren schrijven. 

Ik heb veel herinneringen aan de stad Mechelen daar ik hier lange tijd in een nabij gelegen dorp Elewijt gewoond heb. Samen met mijn ouders gingen we naar een concert van Helmut Lotti in deze kerk. Hij nam zijn CD "Helmut Lotti Goes Classic II" hier op. Probeer je in te beelden hoe de muziek van een voltallig klassiek orkest in deze kerk klinkt. Het is een ervaring om nooit meer te vergeten..

Flashback to school at Pitzemburg and the Kruidtuin, Mechelen

Many of you must be thinking, what a strange title. This park is called the garden of herbs or the "Kruidtuin" in Flemish. Going 25 years back to the history of my youth in the Pitzemburg Secondary school, our gym class instructor let us do long distance running in this park. The school grounds and building are on the edge of the Kruidtuin but have been in better shape. I assume it is hard to do the maintenance in times of financial crisis. When I was a kid, I didn't notice this was a beautiful building.

Let's go back to the park, it has a bit of everything, a lake, a bridge, playing grounds, statues, a fountain, many birds and now also a fox. We could almost not believe it when we saw the warning sign that a fox has been spotted here several times. The fox population is growing in Flanders and they are now already present in city parks. Don't worry, they fear people and are only active in the evening or at night.

Vele lezers moeten wel denken wat een rare titel van dit artikel. Het brengt mij 25 jaar terug in de tijd toen ik als middelbare scholier hier op Pitzemburg school liep. Onze leraar lichamelijke opvoeding liet ons lange afstanden lopen in het park van de school. De schoolgebouwen hebben er al veel beter uit gezien, het zal waarschijnlijk niet gemakkelijk zijn de nodige fondsen te verzamelen voor het onderhoud in deze tijden van financiële crisis. Toen ik een kind was heb ik de schoonheid van dit gebouw nooit opgemerkt. 

Maar laten we terug gaan naar de Kruidtuin, het heeft bijna alles: een meertje, een brug, speeltuin, standbeelden, een fontein, vele vogels en nu ook een vos. We konden het bijna niet geloven toen we het waarschuwingsbord zagen, men heeft hier reeds verschillende keren een vos gespot. De vossen populatie groeit sterk in Vlaanderen en ze zijn nu reeds doorgedrongen tot in de stadsparken. Dit is echter geen reden om u zorgen te maken, vossen zijn schuw en jagen enkel in de avond of 's nachts..

The City Hall of Mechelen and its Belfry

This Neo Gothic City Hall on the Main Square of Mechelen is more than 500 years old. It is an architectural treasure bringing together the Cloth Hall and Belfry. Like most Belfries, also this building is recognised on the UNESCO heritage list.

The roof decorations and chappels look great, the detailed carvings and statues are mindblowing. On the inner square and in front of the town hall, you find statues. On the side of the main building, pedestrians can walk under an arched gallery. I am sure the "Maneblussers" (Moon Extinguishers), that's how they call the inhabitants of Mechelen make use of this on rainy days.

Dit Neogotisch stadhuis op de Grote Markt van Mechelen is meer dan 500 jaar oud. Het is een architecturaal hoogstandje die de lakenhal en het Belfort laten samensmelten. Zoals de meeste Belforten is deze ook opgenomen op de UNESCO Wereld Erfgoed Lijst. 

De dak decoraties en kapellen zien er prachtig uit, het gedetailleerd beeldhouwwerk is verbluffend. Op het binnenplein en voor het stadhuis vind je enkele standbeelden. Op de zijkant van het gebouw kunnen voetgangers onder een geboogwelfde galerij wandelen. Ik ben er zeker van dat de bewoners van Mechelen, de zogenaamde Maneblussers hier zeker gebruik van maken als het regent..

The “Brusselpoort” or the gate of Brussels in Mechelen

The Brusselpoort is located at the end of the Hoogstraat and the Koningin Astridlaan on the main road around the city centre. It is one of the gates of the now destroyed wall around Mechelen from the 13th century. The gate was renovated during the 17th century and stands now proud on one of the busiest traffic roads of town. Many of these ancient buildings are only kept in shape for historical value. Here the city of Mechelen is using the tower also for office space.

De Brusselpoort is gelegen op het einde van de Hoogstraat en de Koningin Astridlaan op de Mechelse ring rond het stadscentrum. Het is één van de poorten van de oude stadsmuur uit de 13de eeuw, die heden ten dage vernietigd is. De poort werd gerenoveerd gedurende de 17de eeuw en is nu een pronkstuk op de drukste verkeersader van de stad. Vele van deze oude gebouwen worden slechts voor historische waarde in stand gehouden maar hier gebruikt men de toren ook als kantoorruimte.
