The Belem Tower for visually impaired people, Lisbon

The Belem Tower is a small defense and ceremonial castle which was built in the 16th century on the bank of the Tagus River. It is one of the most popular landmarks of Lisbon, there are always tourists around and it is quite difficult to take pictures of this UNESCO Heritage listed monument without having people in the shot.

On one of the pictures you also see a small replica of the Belem Tower. It was developed to aid visually impaired people in getting a view of the tower. They can come much closer to it and feel the shape to form their view. An excellent initiative.

De Belem Toren is een klein verdedigings- en ceremoniaal kasteel gebouwd gedurende de 16de eeuw op de oever van de Taag rivier. Het is één van de meest populaire bezienswaardigheden van Lissabon. Er zijn altijd toeristen bij de toren en het is er redelijk moeilijk een foto te maken van dit UNESCO erfgoed monument zonder mensen op de voorgrond. 

Op één van de foto’s zie je een kleine replica van de Belem Toren. Men heeft het ontwikkeld om slechtzienden en blinden inzicht te geven op het gebouw. Men kan er veel dichter bij komen en de vorm aanvoelen om er een beeld van te krijgen. Een uitstekend initiatief.

Monument Padrao dos descobrimentos, Lisbon

This amazing monument on the Tagus river bank looks at bit like the front of a ship with all its sailors watching forward. The way they are going to sail, expecting the unknown, looking towards the land approaching at the horizon. The artist expresses the age of discovery, from the 15th and 16th century, when Portugal discovered the world.

The 33 persons on the slope all have a story to tell but we only heard of Vasco da Gama who discovered the route to India. The monument is enormous and in our interpretation we see the huge waves of the sea, swords that the discoveries were holding, camouflaged in the spirit of Christianity. Behind the monument, small sailing boats are docked in a little port. These are the modern times of pleasure navigation.

Dit ongelooflijk monument op de oever van de Taag, lijkt op de boeg van een schip met zijn zeilers die vooruit kijken. Ze kijken in de richting van het varen, uitkijkende naar het onbekende, naar het naderende land aan de horizon. De kunstenaar verbeeldt het ontdekkingstijdperk, van de 15de tot de 16de eeuw, wanneer Portugal de onbekende wateren ter wereld exploreerde. 

De 33 personen op de helling hebben allen een verhaal te vertellen maar wij hadden enkel van Vasco da Gama gehoord die de vaarroute naar India had ontdekt. Het monument is enorm en in onze verbeelding zien we de hoge golven van de zee, de zwaarden die de ontdekkingsreizigers vasthouden, omhult in de camouflage van het christendom. Achter het monument is een kleine haven met zeilbootjes. Welkom in het moderne tijdperk van pleziernavigatie.

Sail away with the Celebrity Equinox in Lisbon

Lisbon is one of the most beautiful ports of Europe to depart with a cruise. It is late afternoon and the sun is shining. You can see it is a big vessel with about 3.000 passengers. On the top deck you can sit on the lawn, overlooking the city center. Historical buildings and hill tops are floating by. We enjoy the views with a cocktail from the pool bar. Cheers.

Lissabon is één van de mooiste vertrekhavens in Europa. Het is late namiddag en de zon schijnt volop. Je ziet dat dit een groot cruise schip is met ongeveer drieduizend passagiers. Op het bovenste dek zitten we op het gras met zicht op de stad. Historische gebouwen en heuvels drijven voorbij. We genieten van een cocktailtje uit de zwembad bar. Proost.

Bridge of the 25th April and Jesus Christ, Lisbon

This incredible bridge over the Taag River is more than 2km long. It was named after the revolution of 25th of April in 1974 which ended the military regime in Portugal. The bridge is enormous and we took pictures from all angles from the city side bank. It was too difficult to get on the bridge itself so we continued our walk toward the Belem castle. Later we also took some pictures right underneath the bridge when the cruise ship sailed by.

Underneath there is a small port with recreational vessels and restaurants. Looking at the other bank we see the high statue of Jesus Christ. A similar monument as in Rio de Janeiro. Lisbon is a fascinating city.

Deze ongelooflijke brug over de Taag rivier is meer dan 2km lang. Ze werd genaamd naar de 25ste april 1974 revolutie die een einde maakte aan het militaire regime in Portugal. De brug is enorm en we namen foto’s uit alle oogpunten van op de oever aan de stadszijde. Het was te moeilijk om te voet op de brug te geraken dus vervolgden we onze wandeling naar het kasteel van Belem. Later namen we nog enkele foto’s recht onder de brug van op het cruise schip tijdens de doorvaart. 

Een kleine haven huist enkele recreatieve bootjes en vele restaurants. Aan de andere oever van de Taag zien we het hoge standbeeld van Jezus. Een gelijkaardig monument als in Rio de Janeiro. Lisabon is een fascinerende stad.

Memorial for Portuguese soldiers who died overseas, Lisbon

This Portuguese memorial in the suburb of Belem (Lisbon) is really impressive. On top of a green blue water pond, they erected a modern pyramid. Here burns the eternal flame to honor the fallen soldiers. Alongside the artificial pond, all names are carved into a stone wall. Visitors may enter a little chapel for prayers.

Deze Potugese memorial in het Belem district van Lisabon is heel indrukwekkend. Boven het blauw groene water oppervlak bouwde men een moderne piramide. Hier brandt het eeuwige vuur ter ere van de gesneuvelde soldaten. Langs het artificieel water, staan alle namen in een muur gegraveerd. Bezoekers kunnen een in een kleine kapel gaan bidden.
