Amazing beauty of the Bay of Kotor, city walls and fortifications

This is one of the most beautiful hikes we ever did and we would recommend this to everyone, take your time to walk up to the top of St. John's Mountain with as end point the ruins of St. John's Castle.

On your way you walk alongside or on the curved wall, making its way up the mountain. In the middle of your 280m climb you pass the Church of Our Lady of Remedy. The church is in a reasonable state, stands isolated on the mountain wall and is about 500 years old. Next to the church, you see ruins of gates, fortresses and the defence wall. This is already interesting and worth a visit.

For us the main attraction was the hike with its flowers, goats, birds, snails and other animals. Nature is spectacular and the views of the Bay of Kotor are out of this world. Way down below you see the cruise ships waiting for their passengers. The walk takes about one hour each way so many people decide not to do this. They are absolutely wrong. If you are capable of doing this hike, even if it takes you three hours instead of two, have no doubts. This is the top attraction of Kotor.

Dit is een van de mooiste wandelingen die we ooit hebben gemaakt en kunnen dit aan iedereen aanbevelen. Neem je tijd om St. John's Berg te beklimmen met als eindpunt de ruïnes van St.John's kasteel.

Onderweg wandel je langs of op de naar boven kronkelende muur. In het midden van de wandeling kom je aan de Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk van de Genezing, deze staat geïsoleerd tegen de steile berg en is ongeveer 500 jaar oud. Behalve de kerk zie je onderweg ook vele overblijfselen van poorten, forten en de verdedigingsmuur. Dit is reeds een bezoek waardig. 

Voor ons was de hoofd bezienswaardigheid echter de natuur. De dieren en planten die je op de wandeling ziet: bloemen, geiten, vogels, slakken en nog veel meer. De zichten over de Baai van Kotor zijn verbluffend. Beneden zie je de cruise schepen wachten op hun passagiers. De wandeling duurt ongeveer 1 uur voor het klimmen en 1 uur voor het dalen. Hierdoor beslissen velen de wandeling niet te doen maar dat is een vergissing. Als je de fysieke mogelijkheden hebt dit te doen, aarzel dan niet. Neem er indien nodig wat meer tijd voor, drie uren. Dit is de top attractie van Kotor.

The Orthodox church of Sveti Luka or Saint Luke, Kotor

Although this is a small church, it is significant for the town. The church was not damaged by forced of nature or war, she looks protected by God. It contains an orthodox altar and a catholic one.

We are pleased with the first picture showing an open bell construction of the church tower against a mountain background. Inside the altars were decorated with gold and frescos. These are the only important pieces of art in the church and chapel; it is so small that only a small group of people can attend a religious celebration.

Alhoewel dit een kleine kerk is, heeft ze toch een belangrijke plaats ingenomen in Kotor. De kerk werd niet beschadigd door natuurgeweld of oorlog en lijkt beschermd door God. Binnen staat zowel een Orthodox als Katholiek altaar. 

We zijn blij met onze eerste foto waarop een open klok constructie in de kerktoren tegen een berg achtergrond te zien is. Binnen in de kerk zijn de altaren versierd met goud en fresco's. Dit zijn de enige kunstvoorwerpen in de kerk en kapel, de ruimte is zo klein dat enkel kleine groepen een misviering kunnen bijwonen.

Going back in time to the Old Town of Kotor in Montenegro

It was hard to go back in time, the wind and waves made it difficult for our little tender boat to dock at the pier of Kotor. When we finally succeeded, the weather gods gave of loads of hail. Waiting until it got better we tried out a small restaurant.

It is just like time stood still in the town of Kotor. This is normal because the town is more than 2.000 years old. On the one side it is protected by the mountains and the front by a defence wall. Kotor is a collection of robust historical houses and churches. On the pictures we give you some impressions of the ambience.

We were surprised to see the Lion from Venice here and liked the sign of the Hostel, rooms from 12 euro. The little port was not only attracting cruise ships but also super yachts and sailing boats.

Het was zwaar terug te gaan in de tijd, de wind en golven maakten het bijna onmogelijk voor onze kleine tender boot om tegen de pier van Kotor aan te meren. Uiteindelijk lukte het maar de weergoden gaven ons een hagelbui als toemaatje. We schuilden in een klein restaurant in de hoop op beter weer.

Het is net alsof de tijd stil stond in Kotor. Dit zal wel redelijk normaal zijn daar de stad meer als 2.000 jaar oud is. Aan de ene kant beschermd door de bergen en aan de voorzijde door een verdedigingsmuur. Kotor is een verzameling van robuuste huizen en kerken. Op de foto's geven we enkele indrukken mee van de sfeer. 

We waren verrast hier de Leeuw van Venetië tegen te komen en vonden het uithangbord van de jeugdherberg wel leuk, kamers vanaf 12 euro. De kleine haven trekt niet enkel cruise schepen aan maar ook super jachten en zeilboten.

Serbian Orthodox Saint Nicholas church in Kotor

This is a very young church built in 1909 and on the second floor hangs a Serbian flag. It shows the close link between Serbia and Montenegro. Just above the entrance you see a marvellous mosaic. Inside the church there are many frescos. The silverware is impressive ranging from small and large candle holders to enormous chandeliers.

The most amazing piece of art is the altar wall at the back of the church. It is dark brown with super paintings. Normally, we like bright colourful paintings but these darker versions are absolutely stunning. At the church there were several women with children begging. It looks like a poor region. We just had to give something to these people.

Dit is een zeer jonge kerk gebouwd in 1909 en op het tweede verdiep hangt een soort Servische vlag. Het toont de nauwe banden tussen Servië en Montenegro aan. Juist boven het inkomportaal zie je een prachtige mozaïek. Binnen in de kerk vind je vele fresco’s. Het zilverwerk is indrukwekkend en varieert van kleine en grote kandelaars tot enorme sierlusters. 

Het meest ongelooflijke kunstwerk is de altaarmuur aan de achterkant van de kerk. Deze is donker bruin met zeer mooie schilderwerken. Normaal houden we meer van schilderijen met meer licht en kleur maar deze matte versies zijn ook echt verbazingwekkend. Bij de kerk waren er enkele vrouwen met kinderen aan het bedelen. Het lijkt een arme regio. We moesten toch wel iets geven aan deze mensen..

St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and museum in Kotor, Montenegro

We are walking in the rain and the first monument we pass by is this church. It is crowded, there are two cruise ships in the bay and everyone wants to visit something inside. The entrance fee is 2 euro, the people selling tickets are very happy with so many visitors.

The relics of Saint Tryphon, the patron saint of Kotor, were kept in an older church on this spot. This Romanic church was built in 1166. Inside the church the brick wall give a strong robust impression. The altar looks like a temple in several levels; an angel with golden wings looks down into the church. On the first floor starts the museum with a wall full of frescoes, they also display paintings, silverware, old bibles and books.

We wandelen door de regen en het eerste monument dat we tegen komen is deze kerk. Met twee cruise schepen in de baai is het hier heel druk iedereen wil iets binnen bezoeken zolang het regent. De ingang kost 2 euro en de mensen die toegangskaartjes verkopen zijn zeer blij met al deze bezoekers. 

De overblijfselen van Saint Tryphon, de patroonheilige van Kotor, worden bewaard onder deze kerk. De Romaanse kerk werd gebouwd in 1166. De bakstenen steunzuilen geven het interieur een robuuste indruk. Het altaar in verschillende niveaus lijkt op een tempel, op de top staat een engel met gouden vleugels die in de kerk neer kijkt. Op het eerste verdiep begint het museum met een muur van fresco’s, men toont er ook schilderijen, zilverwerk, oude bijbels en boeken..
