Living with water in Holland, the canals of Delft

Delft is a charming Dutch University town. The TU Delft is known internationally. Many students live in rooms of houses near the canals. The students have to be careful not to fall into the water with their bikes when retuning from party evenings. The canals and the water give the town a special character. I would however be worried for my house because sometimes the water is very close to entering uninvited into your living room. Holland lives with water.

Delft is een Nederlandse universiteitsstad met veel charme. De TU Delft heeft een zeer goede reputatie en geniet internationale bekendheid. Vele studenten wonen op kamers in huizen dichtbij of langs de grachten. Ze moeten toch heel voorzichtig zijn niet in het water te sukkelen met hun fiets na een avondje stappen. De grachten geven de stad Delft een speciaal karakter. Voor mijn huis zou ik echter ongerust zijn want het water komt soms verraderlijk hoog te staan, met het risico dat het ongevraagd de woonkamer binnensluipt. Holland leeft met water..

The Market of Delft and the City Hall

It was a rainy day on the market of Delft. The city hall looked a bit dark against the grey sky. The town hall is decorated with marble statues and golden symbols. Traders are selling there souvenirs on the market square of the Dutch historical town. In the background you see the “New Church – Nieuwe Kerk”. Also shops sell souvenirs like clumps, windmills, tulips and Delfts Blue Ceramics (mostly factory products).

Het was een regenachtige dag op de markt van Delft. Het stadhuis leek wat donker tegen de grijze lucht. Het is versierd met marmeren beelden en gouden symbolen. Marktventers trachten hun producten aan de man te brengen op het plein van deze historisch Nederlandse stad. Op de achtergrond zie je de “Nieuwe Kerk”. De winkels verkopen ook souvenirs zoals klompen, tulpen, windmolens en Delfts Blauw porselein (het meeste is machinaal gemaakt)..

27 amazing stained glass artworks from Joep Nicolas in the Old Church, Delft

Delft in Holland is a beautiful historic town, the Old Church built in 1246 was the first church of the city. The clock tower is gracious and can been seen from several streets. Certainly a nice view from the road works at the Delft train station where they try to build an underground station like in Antwerp. But let’s go back to the Old Church. This is a very special church. The whole building is a mausoleum, more than 400 people are buried in the walls and the foundations of the church. It is a strange feeling to walk over the graves. First we thought that we should not do this out of respect for the dead, but there is no other possibility, the graves are everywhere. The most amazing artworks in the church are the 27 stained glass windows from Joep Nicolas. Only for these windows I would return to the Old Church in Delft. It is the most beautiful glass artwork collection I have ever seen.

De gemeente Delft is een mooie historische stad, de Oude Kerk werd gebouwd in 1246 en was hun eerste kerk. De kloktoren is sierlijk en kan worden gezien van uit verschillende straten. Dit is zeker een mooi zicht van aan het Centraal station, waar alles opgebroken ligt vanwege de wegenwerken voor de ondergrondse treinsporen, net zoals in Antwerpen. Maar laat ons terug gaan naar de Oude Kerk. Het hele gebouw is een crypte waar meer dan 400 mensen begraven liggen in de fundering en muren. Het is een raar gevoel om over de graven te wandelen. Eerst dachten we dat dit niet mocht uit respect voor de doden, maar de graven zijn overal, je kan het niet vermijden. De meest ongelooflijke kunstwerken, zijn de 27 glasramen ontworpen door Dhr. Joep Nicolas. Voor deze glasramen te bewonderen willen we zeker terug gaan naar de Oude kerk. Het is de mooiste glasramen collectie die we ooit hebben gezien..

Royal Delft, the only remaining Delftware factory from the 17th century.

Delfts Bleu is one of the most famous products of The Netherlands. Royal Delft, or the “Porceleyne Fles” is a Delftware factory founded in 1653 and is the oldest of its kind still in operation. You can visit the museum, shop and factory. Here you find many pieces of art. They demonstrate how to bake pottery and paint it by hand. The artists have to follow a training of one year before they master the painting skill. The paint is in fact black, but due to the composition and the heating process the paint becomes blue. The pieces are a bit expensive but it is also possible to buy an item from “Westraven” a subaidiary which works with an industrial painting process. If you go to Delft, you need to visit this factory.

Delfts Blauw is een van de meest beroemde producten van Nederland. Royal Delft of de “Porceleyne Fles” is een Delfts Blauw fabriek uit 1653 en de oudste die nog in gebruik is. Je kan het museum, winkel en de fabriek bezoeken. Hier vind je vele kunstwerken. Tijdens demonstraties tonen ze hoe de potten en borden met de hand worden beschilderd. De kunstenaars moeten hiervoor een volledig jaar in training gaan vooraleer ze deze schilderkunst beheersen. De verf is in feite zwart en wordt blauw door de samenstelling en het bakproces. De aardewerken zijn redelijk duur maar het is ook mogelijk een stuk te kopen van “Westraven” een dochterbedrijf die het aardewerk machinaal spuit. Als je in Delft bent moet je deze fabriek zeker bezoeken..

The crypt of the Dutch Royal Family in Delft

On the market (“Markt”) of Delft, vendors are selling there products. The “Nieuwe Kerk” or New Church has a dominant position on the square. The church is called like this because it was the second church of the city. The first one was called the old church. The naming conventions are indeed simple. This is a special place, 56 members of the Dutch Royal family are buried in the crypt of the church. The first royal, Prince Willem I was added in 1584. December 2004, the last funeral took place for Prince Bernhard the husband of Queen Juliana. On displays you find back the history of the Royal family and the role of each King or Queen. Like King Willem I who was the King of Belgium, Luxemburg and The Netherlands from 1815 till 1830. The church architecture itself is also interesting: there is a large organ, a new stained glass artwork and big chandeliers. The most important aspect of the church is the crypt and history of the Dutch Royal Family.

Op de Markt van Delf zijn marktkramers druk in de weer met de verkoop van hun goederen. De “Nieuwe Kerk” torent hoog boven de markt uit en is dominant aanwezig. De kerk wordt zo genoemd daar zij de tweede kerk is dat gebouwd werd in de stad. De eerste noemt de “Oude Kerk”. Een zeer simpele benadering voor het kiezen van een naam, maar efficiënt. In deze kerk liggen 56 leden van de Nederlandse koninklijke familie begraven. Prins Willem I was de eerste die in 1584 werd begraven in de koninklijke crypte. In december 2004, nam de laatste begrafenis plaats van Prins Bernhard, de gemaal van Koningin Juliana. Op borden vind je de geschiedenis van de Oranjes terug met de rol van iedere Koning of Koningin. Bijvoorbeeld Koning Willem I die regeerde over België, Luxemburg en Nederland van 1815 tot 1830. Het interieur van de kerk is ook mooi: een groot orgel, een nieuwe brandglas kunstwerk en grote kandelaars. Het belangrijkste van deze kerk is echter de crypte en de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Koninklijke familie..

The studio of Vermeer in Delft, The master of light

What do you do on a rainy day in Delft? You could pay a visit to the studio of Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer is one of the most famous Dutch painters and lived in Delft. During the 17th century, he made 60 paintings but only 37 were found back. These are now spread all over the world in the most prestigious museums. They call him the master of light because he could bring his paintings to life by playing with light, sun and shadow. In the house you can see his studio and experiment with different light settings. Replicas of all his known works are shown in an exhibition. The paintings we love the most are: “the little street”, “the milkmaid”, “the girl with a pearl earring” and “a lady seated at the piano”. The characters seem to come to live in the paintings. Our favourite painting is “the girl with the pearl earring”, you can look at the girl from all possible angles and she seems to stare back at you. Very strange and it shows the mastership of Vermeer.

Wat doe je op een regenachtige dag in Delft? Je zou de studio van Johannes Vermeer kunnen bezoeken. Vermeer is één van de meest beroemde Nederlandse schilders en woonde in Delft. Gedurende de 17de eeuw heeft hij 60 schilderijen gemaakt maar er werden er slechts 37 van teruggevonden. Deze hangen nu overal ter wereld in de meest prestigieuze musea. Ze noemen Vermeer de meester van het licht: hij kon zijn schilderijen tot leven wekken door te werken met licht, zon en schaduw. In het huis kan je zijn studio bezoeken en zelf experimenteren met verschillende licht standen. Reproducties van alle Vermeer schilderijen zijn te bezichtigen in een tentoonstelling. De schilderijen die we het meest waarderen zijn: “het straatje”, “de melkmeid”, “meisje met de parel”, en “zittende vrouw aan piano”. De personages lijken tot leven te komen. Ons favoriete schilderij is het “meisje met de parel”, je kan ze van elke mogelijke hoek bekijken en ze lijkt altijd naar je terug te staren. Carnaval in Delft, it was a surpirse

We were considering going to a Carnaval city but decided not to do this. Our first choice would have been the Carnaval in Köln. Today it was dry weather and we felt like a walk with our dogs. Delft is a historical city so we went there. On our way to the main square, we saw many police men, crowds and people dressed up in very strange characters. We immediately knew there was going to pass by a Carnaval parade. It was a nice surprise and below you find some pictures. The ambiance was excellent in Delft.

We hadden in de loop van de week overwogen een Carnavalsstad te bezoeken maar besloten daar niet meer door te gaan. Onze eerste keuze zou op het Carnaval in Keulen gevallen zijn. Vandaag was het droog, redelijk weer, en we besloten met onze honden te gaan wandelen. Delf is een historische stad dicht bij onze woonplaats dus reden we er naar toe. Op onze weg naar de markt, zagen we veel politie, groepjes mensen en lui in allerlei rare kostuums. We realiseerden onmiddellijk dat er een Carnavalsstoet langs ging komen. Het was een leuke verrassing en hieronder vind je wat foto's. De sfeer zat wel uitstekend in Delft..
