The museum of Ephesus with the statue of Artemis

In Selçuk, you find the museum of Ephesus where they restore and expose the pieces of art archaeologists find back in the ancient town. The statue of Artemis was very impressive. This Goddess was worshiped by the Greeks and Romans for the fertility. She is seen as the mother of the Gods and she holds power over nature and its animals. That’s why the statue also contains images of animals in the jewellery and clothing. The original statue stood in the temple of Artemis which was destroyed. In the Roman Empire you find several replicas of this statue, one here in Selçuk but also in the Vatican Museum in Rome.
