Driving up to the Vallnord ski resort in the summer

Entering Andorra from the Spanish border in the south, you cross the whole country to the north to reach the ski resort in Vallnord. It is not so far but finding the right road is another matter.

On our way we made some stops and went for a short hike. The weather was changing rapidly. Clouds were entering the mountain range. The ski lift was deserted. At the top, our car was shaking under the heavy winds and we were extremely prudent getting out of the car. Below us you see the hairpin curves which we will ride on in a few minutes.

Andorra binnen rijdend van uit het zuiden aan de Spaanse grens, moet je het volledige land doorkruisen naar het noorden vooraleer het skigebied Vallnord te bereiken. Het is echter niet zo ver maar de juiste weg vinden is een uitdaging. 

Onderweg stopten we enkele keren voor een korte wandeling. De weersomstandigheden in de bergen veranderden snel. De wolken drongen het gebergte binnen. De skilift lag er verlaten bij. Op de top, schudde onze auto door zware windstoten. We waren heel voorzichtig toen we de auto uitstapten. Onder ons zie je de haarspeldbochten waarop we enkele minuten later gaan rijden.

Caldea wellness or swimming in a space ship, Andorra

The Caldea wellness building is by far the most impressive construction of Andorra La Vella. Its glass pyramid tower and modern style blows you away. Before entering the swimming pool, you get a first glance at the futuristic decor via shinny staircases with mirrors and steel elements.

We have to admit it is not cheap to enter but the swimming pool with thermal source water makes up for it. The swimming pool almost looks like a space ship. Everything seems out of metal, Jacuzzi’s are elevated in the air like flying saucers. Regularly fountains start to spray water. They move on music and are accompanied by colored lasers. Next to the swimming pool you can also enjoy warm water springs in the Roman baths, outdoor swimming, a steam room and sauna.

Het Caldea kuuroord is met grote voorsprong het meest indrukwekkende gebouw van Andorra La Vella. Zijn glazen piramidetoren en moderne stijl zijn gewoon verbluffend. Vooraleer het zwembad binnen te gaan, krijg je een eerste glimp te zien van het futuristische decor met blinkende trappen bestaande uit glas, staal en spiegels. 

Toegegeven dat de inkom niet goedkoop is maar het verwarmd zwembad met bronwater maakt het helemaal weer goed. Het zwembad lijkt wel een ruimteschip. Alles lijkt van metaal, de jacuzzi's zijn op elkaar gelift, net vliegende schotels. Regelmatig spuiten fonteinen water, ze bewegen op het ritme van muziek en worden begeleid door gekleurde lasers. Naast het zwembad kan je ook genieten van warm water bronnen in de Romeinse baden, buitenzwembaden, een stoombad en sauna.

St. Esteve church, Andorra La Vella

This small mountain capital of the mini state Andorra has only 25.000 inhabitants. There main church is almost a thousand years old and built in several stages. You really see the different styles, old defense walls compared to the white contemporary construction of walls.

Inside the church there is a small altar, an organ and lots of stained glass. It is a dark church and difficult to take good pictures. Since the St. Esteve church is so important for the country, we felt we could not skip it on our blog.

Deze kleine berg hoofdstad van de ministaat Andorra telt slechts 25.000 inwoners. Hun hoofdkerk is bijna duizend jaar oud en werd gebouwd in verschillende tijdsperiodes. Je kan goed de verschillende stijlen herkennen, de verdedigingsmuren in vergelijking met de moderne witte opbouw van muren. 

Binnen in de kerk staat een klein altaar, een orgel en veel sierglazen ramen. Het is wel een donkere bedoening en dus moeilijk om foto’s te nemen. Daar de St. Esteve kerk de belangrijkste van het land is, konden we niet verantwoorden deze niet op onze blog te tonen.

Eurostars Hotel Andorra Centre, Andorra La Vella

It was not easy to find a hotel in Andorra La Vella, most of them where fully booked or rather old. We had the same feeling when trying to reserve a table in a restaurant. Lucky for us, we found the Eurostars Hotel which is located in the city center. The rooms are very good and staff service minded.

In the evening it was raining hard and we had to eat somewhere. We could run to the Mama Maria restaurant next door. To our surprise a very good Italian restaurant. We enjoyed the evening and would return to this hotel.

Het was niet gemakkelijk om een hotel te boeken in Andorra La Vella, de meesten waren volzet of leken ouderwets. Dezelfde indruk hadden we bij het zoeken naar een restaurant. Gelukkig vonden we het Eurostars Hotel dat in het centrum gelegen is. De kamer zijn zeer goed en het personeel vriendelijk en behulpzaam. 

’s Avonds was het zo hard aan het regenen dat we besloten in het restaurant naast het hotel iets te eten. Het was een Italiaan die Mama Maria noemde. Tot onze verrassing was het er zeer goed. We genoten van onze avond en zouden nog terug gaan naar dit hotel.

General Impressions and shopping in Andorra La Vella

We did not know what to expect from Andorra, the mini country in the Pyrenees. In our mind it would be comparable to Monaco but it was not the case. As soon as you cross the border, you are in the mountains. The capital, Andorra La Vella, is a modern shopping paradise and the highest located capital city in Europe (1023m altitude).

Shopping is excellent. In the city center you find all brands and modern shops. Investments in this city must have been enormous. From an architectural perspective there are some nice bridges, art and the Caldea wellness center with it glass pyramid tower.

We wisten niet wat te verwachten van Andorra, de mini staat in de Pyreneeën. In onze verbeelding hadden we iets vergelijkbaars met Monaco verwacht, maar dat was niet het geval. Eens je de landsgrens oversteekt, ben je in de bergen. De hoofdstad, Andorra La Vella is een modern winkelparadijs en tevens de hoogst gelegen hoofdstad van Europa op 1023m. 

Winkelen is uitstekend. In het stadscentrum vind je alle merken en moderne winkels. De investeringen in deze stad moeten enorm geweest zijn. Uit architecturaal perspectief zijn er enkele mooie bruggen, kunst en het Caldea kuuroord met zijn glazen piramidetoren.
