Excellent fresh fish at Fish Bar Crudo, Civitavecchia

It was off-season and calm in Civitavecchia. We explored Tripadvisor for restaurant advice but nothing really jumped out so we walked alongside the beach promenade looking at each place. The setting of restaurant Crudo at the pier was enchanting, now try the food.

The fresh seafood was just top. We had different types of raw shrimps, clams, oysters, tuna tartar, salmon tartar, seabass tartar and the home made Italian Pasta. It was so good that we went back the next evening.

Het was buiten het vakantieseizoen en rustig in Civitavecchia. We zochten Tripadvisor af voor wat restaurant advies maar niets sprong er echt uit dus wandelden we langs de kustlijn en bekeken we persoonlijk elke zaak. De locatie van restaurant Crudo aan de pier was betoverend, nu nog de gerechten proberen. 

De verse zeevruchten waren top. We aten verschillende soorten rauwe garnalen, schelpjes, oesters, tonijntartaar, zalmtartaar, zeebaarstartaar en natuurlijk huis gemaakte Italiaanse pasta. Het was er zo goed dat we de dag erna terug gingen eten.

Church of the virgin, with the first parish in the world, Civitavecchia

This church in Civitavecchia caught our attention because of the orange, brown and yellow exterior. On an information board it read that in 1856 the first parish in the world was established on this spot. The church is dedicated to the Virgin or Our Lady. In the church you find the grave of Alessandro Cialdi, the last captain of the Papal fleet. This is the fleet of the States of the Church which disappeared when Italy was founded in 1861. The interior is rather dark but expresses some kind of power, a strong impression. A unique church.

Deze kerk in Civitavecchia trok onze aandacht omwille van zijn oranje, bruine en gele gevels. Op een informatiebord kon je lezen dat hier de eerste parochie in de wereld werd opgericht in het jaar 1856. De kerk is toegewijd aan de Maagd of Onze Lieve Vrouwe. In de kerk ligt het graf van Alessandro Cialdi, de laatste kapitein van de Kerkelijke Staat. Deze kerkelijke vloot verdween bij de oprichting van Italië in 1861. Het interieur van de kerk is redelijk donker maar straalt kracht uit. Een unieke kerk..

General impressions of Civitavecchia, a major cruise harbour in Italy

Last September, we departed with the Celebrity Silhouette from Civitavecchia to Haifa in Israel. It is from the same port that the Costa Concordia departed for its last journey before it was grounded and sunk on Island del Giglio. This is a real drama and we feel sorry for all the passengers and the families of the victims. It makes you think because we followed the same route with the Silhouette, like many other cruise ships which departed from the Civitavecchia port. This accident will however not stop the cruising industry boom and it will certainly improve the safety procedures on cruise ships. For all people who depart from Civitavecchia in the future, we publish some impressions of this very nice city.

September laatstleden vertrokken we met de Celebrity Silhouette uit de haven van Civitavecchia naar Haifa in Israël. Het is van uit dezelfde haven dat de Costa Concordia is afgevaren voor zijn laatste cruise, die abrubt tot einde kwam op het eiland van del Giglio waar hij kapseisde. Het is een vreselijk drama en wij voelen mee met de passagiers en de familie van de slachtoffers. Het doet je toch nadenken, wij volgden dezelfde route met de Silhouette, net zoals zo vele cruise schepen die ook vertrokken uit Civitavecchia. Dit ongeval zal echter de groei van de cruise industrie niet tegenhouden, maar het zal wel de veiligheidsprocedures verbeteren. Voor iedereen die in de toekomst uit de haven van Civitavecchia zal vertrekken publiceren we enkele impressies van deze hele mooie stad..

Cruise ships arriving in the harbour of Civitavecchia

Our cruise has come to end and we are not alone, the harbour of Civitavecchia is welcoming several other cruise ships like: the Holland America Ryndam, the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Sea, and the Holland America Noordam. We still have some days to visit Rome but we disembark the Celebrity Silhouette on the day these picitures were taken.

Onze cruise komt tot een eind en we zijn niet alleen, de haven van Civitavecchia verwelkomt verscheidene andere Cruise schepen zoals: de Holland America Ryndam, de Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Sea, en de Holland America Noordam. We hebben nog enkele dagen om Rome te bezoeken maar op de dag dat deze foto's genomen zijn moesten we de Celebrity Silhouette ontschepen.

Restaurant Il Boccone D’oro, good quality food in Civitavecchia

Being in Civitavecchia for the first time, it was not easy to find a good restaurant. We saw many places but they were not convincing. On our walk we passed by de Piazza Calamatta where this fine Restaurant is located. It has a nice sounding name, impossible to understand for foreigners who don’t speak Italian, it is called “Il Boccone D’oro di Popescu Aura Gabriela”. We made reservations but this was not necessary. We were surprised the restaurant only opened at 19:30, in Belgium restaurants are open at 18:00. The food was really nice, we had the Carpaccio, a pasta with small lobsters which were langoustines, and veal in a creamy lemon sauce. The wine card did not exist but you had a choice from the shelf. When we asked for a Barolo, they did not have it but they brought us a good bottle from their private stock. For all people staying over for one night to catch a cruise, this is a restaurant we can recommend.

Daar we voor de eerste keer in Civitavecchia waren, was het niet eenvoudig een goed restaurant te kiezen. We hebben vele plaatsen bezocht maar niets kon ons echt overtuigen. Op onze wandeling kwamen we dit restaurant tegen op Piazza Calamatta. Het heeft een leuk klinkende naam die voor niet Italiaans sprekende toeristen moeilijk te begrijpen is: “Il Boccone D’oro di Popescu Aura Gabriela”. We reserveerden maar dit was niet noodzakelijk. Tot onze verbazing ging het restaurant pas om 19:30 open. In België en Nederland zijn de restaurants vroeger open. Het eten was echt goed, we kozen de Carpaccio, een pasta met kleine kreeftjes die langoustines waren, en kalfsvlees in een romige limoen saus. Er was geen wijnkaart en je kon kiezen van de plank. Toen we vroegen of ze een Barolo hadden was het antwoord negatief, maar we kregen een fles te koop aangeboden uit de privé kelder. Voor mensen die een nachtje in Civitavecchia verblijven alvorens een cruise aan te vangen is dit een restaurant dat we kunnen aanbevelen..

Good location and nice architecture in “Hotel de la Ville”, Civitavecchia

If you have to book an overnight stay before your cruise departing from Rome starts, you need to be in Civitavecchia. “Hotel de la Ville” is located very close to the train station and to the free shuttle busses to the port. An ideal location. The building itself is very nice, rooms with high ceilings, wall paintings, arches, nice staircases, we really appreciated that. The internet charges are at 1 euro per hour, what a fair price is. They could improve on friendliness and quality of the breakfast buffet. Maybe one negative point was the air-conditioning in the room, it was rather noisy and the temperature was still high. We have to admit it was a very hot day with temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius.

Als je dient te overnachten voor de start van je cruise vertrekkende uit Rome, dan moet je in Civitavecchia zijn. “Hotel de la Ville” ligt op loopafstand van het treinstation en de gratis busdienst naar de haven. Een ideale locatie. Het gebouw zelf is zeer mooi, met hoge plafonds, muur schilderijen, booggewelven, mooie siertrappen, we hebben hier wel van genoten. De internetkosten bedragen 1 euro per uur, wat schappelijk is. Het hotel kan verbeteren op gebied van vriendelijkheid en de kwaliteit van het ontbijtbuffet. Als we één negatieve opmerking hebben is het de airconditioning in de kamer, deze was hoorbaar en kon onvoldoende koeling brengen. We moeten wel eerlijk zijn dat de buitentemperatuur boven de 35 graden was gedurende de dag..

The beach of Civitavecchia

A town with a Cruise Port must have a beach and yes, it has. In the bay, the water is crystal clear and you can see the fish swimming around. Some beach areas are covered with rock formations and others are sandy. Everywhere, there are walking opportunities or on wide boulevards between palm threes or on artificial bridges leading into the sea. Near the fort, there is a carnival fair for kids on the beach. When the night falls the fountains spray bright coloured water. Enjoy your walk or swim.

Een stad met een cruise haven moet toch ook een strand hebben, en ja, dat hebben ze. In de baai is het water kristalhelder, je ziet er de vissen rondzwemmen. Op sommige stranden vind je rotsformaties en op andere zand. Overal zijn er wandelmogelijkheden op de brede dijk tussen de palmbomen of op kunstmatige bruggen die de zee trotseren. Bij het fort staat een kermis voor kinderen op het strand. Als de nacht valt dan sprenkelen de fonteinen fel gekleurd water. Geniet van je wandeling of het zwemmen..
