The park, Place Rapp and the 100 year old Carrousel of Colmar

We parked our car under the Rapp square (Place Rapp) in Colmar. The square was named after General Rapp who fought together with Napoleon Bonaparte. On the square you find a statue of the General who was born in Colmar. It was warm and many people tried to find some shadow in the beautiful park. Next to the “Avenue de la République” stands the proud Carrousel which was built in the year 1900. It still looks super with its paintings, lights, staircases, horses and carriages. What a treasure of carnival history, completely different than the fast thrill rides of the modern world. The carrousel still has its charm and seems to be very popular.

We parkeerden onze auto in de ondergrondse parking van “Place Rapp” te Colmar. Het plein werd genoemd naar Generaal Rapp die samen vocht met Napoleon Bonaparte. Op het plein staat een standbeeld van de Generaal die geboren werd in Colmar. Het was warm en vele mensen zochten de schaduw op in het mooie park. Aan de zijde van de drukke “Avenue de la République” staat een trotse Carrousel die werd gebouwd in het jaar 1900. Deze ziet er nog super uit met zijn schilderwerken, lichtjes, trappen, paarden en koetsen. Wat een schat uit de geschiedenis van het kermisleven, totaal verschillend dan de snelle moderne attracties. De paardenmolen heeft nog steeds zijn charme en lijkt zeer populair..

House of Faces, or “Maison des Têtes" in Colmar

The House of Faces or “Maison des Têtes” was built in 1609 in is still in exceptional condition for such an old house. In 1902 the famous sculpture artist of Colmar, Bartholdi added a statue of an Alsacian barrel-maker on top of the crown of the house. The faces of dogs and people are in extreme detail so that the expressions and emotions are clearly visible. The facade of the house has a brown orange colour but when you walk to the back of the house, you get a totally different view of a white facade with wooden elements. For me this is the most impressive house of Colmar.

Het huis van gezichten of “Maison des Têtes” werd gebouwd in 1609 en is nog steeds in een uitzonderlijke staat voor zo’n oud huis. In 1902 heeft de beroemde beeldhouwer van Colmar, Bartholdi een standbeeld van de Elzas vatenmaker op de kroon van het dak toegevoegd. De gezichten van honden en mensen zijn zo gedetailleerd dat je expressies en emoties duidelijk kan zien. De gevel is in een bruin oranje kleur en als je naar de achterkant wandelt krijg je een totaal ander zicht. Een witte gevel met bruin houten elementen die zo typisch zijn voor Colmar. Voor mij is dit het meest indrukwekkende huis van Colmar..

Saint Martin’s church or “Collégiale Saint-Martin” in Colmar

This 800 year old Gothic church in Colmar has a very nice exterior. The tower and façade contain many sculptures and decorations. The church clock is mounted on a blue red wooden frame what is unique. Some of the art and fire glass inside the church is beautiful but the interior is too dark. It gives the church a cold and dark atmosphere, it is not inviting. The parish community should try to bring more light and life in the church.

Deze 800 jaar oude kerk in Colmar heeft een zeer mooie buitenarchitectuur. De toren en gevels bevatten veel beeldhouwwerken en versieringen. De kerkklok is bevestigd op een blauw rood houten raamwerk, wat uniek is. Binnen in de kerk vind je enkele mooie kunstwerken en glasramen maar het interieur is veel te donker. Het geeft de kerk een koude en donkere uitstraling en dit is niet uitnodigend. De parochie gemeenschap zou zich moeten inzetten meer licht en leven in de kerk te brengen..

Having an excellent lunch in Restaurant Jy’s, Colmar

We love to try out good restaurants and here in Colmar we were very pleased. Restaurant Jy’s is located near “La Petite Venise” and has one Michelin Star. It has a big terrace alongside the Lauch river and many people preferred to sit outside. We selected a table in the restaurant near the wall of wine as you can see behind Kristel. Since we were planning an afternoon in town, we went for the smaller 4 course menu with a wine selection. The presentation of the food was simple but everything was of excellent quality and taste.

We vinden het leuk goede restaurants uit te proberen en hier in Colmar waren we uiterst tevreden. Restaurant Jy’s dat bij “La Petite Venise” gelegen is, heeft één Michelin Ster. Het grote terras naast de Lauch Rivier was populair en vele mensen kozen om buiten te zitten. We prefereerden een tafeltje binnen aan de wijnmuur die je achter Kristel kan zien. Daar we nog een namiddag in de stad gepland hadden, besloten we voor het kleinere 4 gangen menu te gaan met aangepaste wijntjes. De presentatie van de borden was simpel maar de kwaliteit en smaak uitstekend..

Covered market place or “Marché Couvert” in Colmar

In the “Rue des écoles” in Colmar you find an old building from 1865 which is used as a market place. The “Marché Couvert” is located on the bank of the small waterway in the city of Colmar. This is the “Lauch” river, in the past the merchant could bring his products to the market via a boat. Today with the modern road infrastructure this is no longer done. What could you expect from such a market? Well, I was expecting good quality food, you are in France after all. My expectations were met, look at these beautiful cheeses, vegetables, fish, meat, salami, wine, spices and bread. Everything was displayed in a professional manner. This is not a market as we know it but a French Gourmet palace.

In de “ Rue des écoles” te Colmar, vind je een gebouw uit 1865 dat wordt gebruikt als een overdekte marktplaats. De “Marché Couvert” ligt aan we kleine waterweg in het centrum van Colmar. Dit is de “Lauch” rivier waarlangs in het verleden de marktkramers hun goederen binnen vaarden. Vandaag, met de moderne wegeninfrastructuur wordt dit niet meer gedaan. Wat kan je verwachten op zo’n markt? Wel, wij dachten aan lekkere producten, want we zijn toch in Frankrijk. Onze verwachtingen werden ingevuld, kijk naar deze mooie kazen, groenten, vis, vlees, salami, wijn, kruiden en brood. Alles wordt op een professionele manier aangeboden. Dit is geen gewone markt zoals wij deze kennen maar een Frans Gourmet paleis..
