Walkabout

by Kelly

walkabout :: noun ::  \ˈwȯ-kə-ˌbau̇t\

a short period of wandering bush life engaged in by an aborigine as an occasional interruption of regular work :: a walking and/or ritual journey

It’s become a bit of an evening ritual for me.

I grab my camera after dinner and set off for a little walkabout.

Sometimes Tripp comes along and sometimes I’ll take my dog, Daisy, but most of the time it’s just me and my camera.  And although I’ve got my camera with me, I’m not looking for anything in particular.  Just whatever happens to capture my attention….some pretty light…a little bit of magic.

I take a different route each time I go.  Some days I like to walk the neighborhood – take in all the pretty flowers in the front gardens.

Of course you never know what you’ll find when you go by Crazy Stuart’s house.

I guess I should mention here that his name isn’t really Stuart and he isn’t really crazy…I don’t know how we got started calling him that except that his yard is full of all kinds of Tchotchkes. In reality though, the owner of this house is a legitimate antiques dealer with a basement full of vintage treasures.  So it’s always fun to walk by and see if he’s added new yard decorations.

The other route I take most often is down to the walking trail.  I love the way the golden light comes through trees.  And since the trail is mostly left to grow wild, it almost feels like I’ve been transported to a tropical jungle.

I love listening to the sounds of the birds and hum of the locusts.  And don’t even get me started on the baby bunnies that live down there.

I spend the better part of my weekdays chained to a desk and a compute so it’s good for my soul to get out.  Even when it’s hot, it’s good to be outside and take these little walkabouts.

Thanks for coming along with me today.

Until next time,

Kelly

A European Adventure

by Dotti

We began our epic adventure here, in Paris, the City of Lights ...

... and ended it here, in Rome, the Eternal City.

For three weeks, my husband, my daughter, my son-in-law, my granddaughter and I trekked through streets in two countries in Europe. And what an adventure it was! While I wish I could share with you many, many of my photos {most of which are still unedited}, I'll share just a few highlights with you so you can see some of what I saw through the lens of my camera.

We began in Paris. How many ways can you photograph what might possibly be the most photographed iconic landmark in the world?

From the waters of the Seine River we saw the beautiful architecture that makes Paris, well, Paris.

We spent an enchanting morning at Luxombourg Gardens.

From there we ventured to Venice. Ahhhh! Venice. A treat for all the senses. I even dabbled in street photography. Well, that's stretching it a bit. I was getting ready to take a photo of the marvelous fruit stand when the young attendant started mugging for me. Knowing a good thing when I see one and knowing I'd be too shy to ask, I was happy to take him up on his offer.

Of course, the canals in Venice captured my heart and my eyes. This one was right outside our apartment door.

About two-thirds of the way through my trip, I realized that I wasn't capturing the details I usually find through my lens but rather was painting with a broad stroke. I decided that was okay. It was that kind of trip, just so much sensory overload. But this one, captured on our gondola ride, was an exception.

And, finally, as we leave Venice, what could be more romantic than a Venetian canal in the twilight?

While in Venice, we visited the Venetian islands of Murano, famous for glass blowing, and Burano, famous for lace making. The color on these islands made my heart skip a beat. Or two.

Next stop, Florence. The cityscape from the Pitti Palace gardens was breathtaking with all those red tile roofs and the Tuscan hills beyond.

And the view riverside wasn't bad either.

Of course, there were winding, narrow streets everywhere we turned and I wanted to photograph each one. My family, however, had other ideas. That's probably a good thing or my EHD might have blown up.

After the crowded cities, we found a much-needed change of pace in Sorrento, on the famed Amalfi Coast. There are no words to describe the beauty we found here and sadly, not enough time to share with you even a morsel of what we found there. Again, here are the broadstrokes.

And, finally, the last place on our trip, Rome. I found the most amazing light in Rome from the morning light just outside our apartment window ...

... to the Roman Colosseum caught in the golden hour light.

There you have it, just a smidgeon of what I saw through my camera lens. I do hope you enjoyed it. I hope to share at more length soon on my personal blog but there are quite a few photos to work through first. And  as I always do for our special family occasions, I'll be making a photo book so we all have a tangible memory of the wonderful places we experienced together. This was truly a very special family adventure.

For the month of August, we will once again be doing our August Break. This allows all of us, readers and contributors alike, to soak up the last days of summer. We do hope you'll continue to visit us every day but the posts will be short and sweet, just like summer itself. We will once again have a color a week for our themes. The first week, beginning tomorrow, will be Orange(ish) the new black. Tune in Monday for more information and inspiration.

Simply Happy

by Linda

"Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars... and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful. Everything is simply happy.

Trees are happy for no reason; they are not going to become prime ministers or presidents and they are not going to become rich and they will never have any bank balance.

Look at the flowers — for no reason. It is simply unbelievable how happy flowers are. "

It has been such a glorious month in the Flickr pool!  The above images are just a sample of the wonderful, golden light and magical summer moments.

Bottom row:  Mellsa, Margie O'Hara

Even though the month of June and the theme of 'Golden Hour' might be winding down, the good news is that we can capture the golden hour all year long.

Thank you all so much for sharing your beautiful art with us.  We are so grateful for this lovely community.

Wednesday Focus on You

by Terri

So many beautiful photos to choose from in our Focusing on Life Gallery!  Most Wednesdays, we are looking at the entire gallery rather than focusing on those photos that follow our monthly theme. However, this photo by M. E. Rawl would have jumped out at me even if our theme wasn't "Golden Hour".  The composition, the light and the focus all make this a spectacular shot! Mary's Photostream is full of beautiful shots so I hope you have a chance to take a look. Thank you, Mary, for sharing  your beautiful photos with us!

It's Golden

by Terri

With our monthly theme being the “Golden Hour” here at FOL, many of us have been posting about that very subject.  It has long been my favorite time of day to shoot but I have still picked up some hints from my fellow bloggers.  Here are a few that I want to add to the list:

Quick Tips for Shooting During the Golden Hour
  • Calculate Your Golden Hour. You can help maximize your golden hour efficiency by planning ahead. Know your destination, have an idea of what subjects you want to shoot, and calculate precisely when the golden hour occurs where you live.
  • Use a Wide Aperture. If you don’t typically shoot wide open, the golden hour presents a great opportunity to do so. You will be awed by the beautiful “points-of-light” bokeh created during these times of day.

The Golden Hour is also a great time for portraits. The warmer tones at this time of day are generally more flattering. Just be careful if you are taking portraits with a wide-open lens that you have your focus on your subject’s eyes. You can see in the photo on the left that the subject's eyes are in focus but his knee, which is only a couple of inches closer to the lens, is out of focus, as is the chair behind him.

  • Stay With It. Changes in lighting during the golden hour occur pretty fast; the landscape you shot when first arriving at your location will probably look significantly different 10 minutes later. So keep shooting to be sure you capture as many variations as possible.

Thirty minutes elapsed from the first color in the sky to when the sun was up.  I probably took 30-40 photos during this time just to be sure I caught what I wanted.
  • Shoot Fast. Don’t be in so much of a rush that you fail to use good technique, but remember that you’ve got a relatively small window in which to take advantage of this gorgeous light.

As you can see, only four minutes elapsed from the first shot to the second. When the sun is rising or setting, it happens fast and you need to just keep shooting!
  • Adjust White Balance. Auto white balance isn’t your best choice when shooting during the golden hour. Set your white balance to “cloudy,” otherwise you risk neutralizing the wonderful golden glow.
Shooting during the golden hour can be inconvenient; you may have to sacrifice your cozy bed to shoot early, or unglue yourself from your regular spot on the sofa to shoot in the evening. But you will be dearly rewarded, as the impact of shooting at these magical times of day can be truly transformative. Get out there and try it for yourself. Prepare to be amazed.
