VA Tras-os-Montes: Harvest Songs And The Shepherd's Bagpipe

Tras-os-Montes: Harvest Songs And The Shepherd's Bagpipe (1980)

"Romances, work-songs and dances from deep Galicia, the Tras-os-Montes in the north-east, featuring the Portuguese bagpipe, distinguished by its ancient, oscillating, fluctuating, microchromatic scales."

José Afonso

(1985) Galinhas do Mato / 192k

"Unable to sing due to the progressive development of his disease, José Afonso releases at the end of 1985 a new LP with original tunes. Only two of the ten themes which compose this record are interpreted by Afonso - the remaining tracks feature Helena Vieira (Tu Gitana), Né Ladeiras (Benditos), Luís Represas (Agora) Janita Salomé (Moda do Entrudo, Tarkovsky, Alegria da Criação), Catarina e Marta Salomé (Galinhas do Mato) and José Mário Branco (Década de Salomé, in partnership with Afonso). A wide range of friend decided to support the artist in this new endeavor, contributing to bring life to this impressive work by José Afonso. It is without effort that one would say that Galinhas do Mato is a great record, and not even the physical difficulties of its author which made him unable to directly participate in were able to eradicate the splendor and sincerity of this work. This proves that the words and music of José Afonso are able to resist to anything, even the absense of voice, shut down by such a foolish disease." Viriato Teles

José Afonso

First album by portuguese singer-songwriter José Afonso. Accompanied by Rui Pato on portuguese viola, Afonso performs still much influenced by the Coimbra "school".

Gaiteiros de Lisboa

The most amazing band to come out of the Portuguese traditional/folk scene during the last 20 years, in my opinion. Dont't miss them live, if they play a gig near you.

Gaiteiros de Lisboa is a folk-traditional-world band of multi-talented musicians who got together around a sonorous project that stands on the constant search for new sounds. This has leaded the group to the creation of original instruments. Basing its work upon the combination of the sound of different wind instruments and vocal polyphonies, the band plays both songs and tunes coming out of Portuguese tradition or from other cultures, as well as their own compositions. Their experimental attitude sets up a bridge between Tradition and Modernity, by blending traditional styles with contemporary sensibilities. [from the band's official website]

Janita Salomé

A Cantar ao Sol (1983)

In this little known masterpiece of Euro-Berber folk music (a label I have just made up) Janita Salomé fuses South-Portuguese polyphonic chanting with North-African rhythms with astonishing results. Other records of interest from this artist include "Lavrar em Teu Peito" (1985), "Olho de Fogo" (1987), and his latest achievement, "Vinho dos Amantes" (2007). You don't want to miss this one, in spite of the lousy bit rate (128).

João Lucas

Fascinating semi-solid conceptions for piano, accordion and electronics (Lucas) and a delightfully evocative cello (Miguel Mira). The soundtrack to Era Uma Coisa Mesmo Muito Abstracta - a choreography by Andresa Soares - Abstract Mechanics is a work of uncomplicated digestibility despite the involvedness of some of its parts. An unambiguously poetic music, either used to highlight a (probably very intriguing) series of dance figures or enjoyed as a musical piece per se. Lucas and Mira explore the instrumental registers with a combination of obsession and scientific curiosity, alternating passages bordering on the romantic side of things (never deprived of surprising factors) with moments of apparent scarcity of rationality permeated by a larger use of improvisation and discordance. But they always manage to fall straight on their feet as one realizes that the tumbles were just picturesque tricks, the couple remaining entirely aware of where the music is going. A passionate yet at the same time light hearted performance, emanating scents of transcendence but also revealing a painstaking care for the sonic details. The fact that this writer has not been able, in about six listens, to compare the material to anything else in recent memory should tell a lot. Perhaps those who recall Joachim Kühn’s playing on Carolyn Carlson’s Dark will find something here that might gratify their taste. Just a faraway association, though.
