work and play mix

A few years ago we started a new tradition for Mothers Day. A gift of help from my younger two kids. My oldest has a busy career and is a mom herself. Each year, I choose a land project for the four of us to tackle together. I love this tradition!

One of my favorite sayings is "many hands make quick work".

We have done things in the past like random junk removal left by others in the woods (don't get me started) and other years pulling invasive's. This year, instead of working on land projects I asked that we work on our fire pit area. Specifically, the weathered wooden rocking chairs that need restoring. Also, removing heavy real logs used as side tables and pulling endless weeds growing through rock edging.

After tightening loose wooden pieces, it quickly became obvious that sanding each chair (X8) would take an eternity. We resorted to Power Washing. Which meant unplanned drying time, followed by the need for stain to even un-sanded wood colors out.

Let the yard work begin. With four of us, we got so much done!
Oh to be younger, they moved so fast. I am grateful for our son & daughters help, who both work a lot of hours at their job/s. They gave up their entire day and spent it with me/us. After enjoying a delicious home cooked meal, we all went to bed tired that night. Including these three:

Jameson, Asher and Tank

While the guys were getting things set up, my new grand dog Asher went on his first off-leash walk. He got zapped by the pasture fence, but otherwise did good. Especially for a rescue puppy exploring a new world.

Before all the work began, was some soul fulfilling play!! I finally took time to fly my new replacement kite. Brad came out to the field and helped release (and re-release) the kite. He also took photos and video. Not posting video due to audio. Wish I could figure out an easier way to replace bad audio with music. iMovie makes my head hurt.

Anywho, I have my own flutterby that floats and glimmers in the sun!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day! If you are not a mom ~ you have one!!

4.28.26

Many of our beloved mothers are no longer here on earth, but never far from our hearts. I miss mine every.single.day. When my mind weighs heavy, I sit on my mom's inscribed memorial bench and talk to her in Spanish. Which is getting pretty spotty. No tengo nadie con quién hablar en español.

4.30.26

Winter birch lit trees flank my mom's bench seasonally. They go into storage and get swapped out for teal clay flower pots. The pots are out now, but I haven't planted them yet. I have the plants, but am waiting for temps to stop dipping into the 30'sF. Soon. Very soon.

smells so sweet

My grandkids were out last weekend. The youngest one carries on our family name, passed down for five generations.

land of wonders ~ april 2026

Last month, I noticed some catkins that Google ID'd as Hickory. I see a lot of various types of catkins on our property. However, I haven't noticed hickory tree's. Interestingly enough, this month I found my first hickory nut laying right smack dab in the middle of the main trail. Just one. How ironic.

Perhaps some critter dropped it, but there are no teeth marks. I am not going to eat the nut, but I would like to draw it. It has a lot of interesting texture.

The surprise snowdrop that appeared at a key time on my beloved cat Sydney's gravesite keeps returning. Sydney was such a unique special cat. Our family still shares many special memories of him.

In another area, naturalized Daffodils made the true blue of naturalized Scilla's stand out.

Our sky views provide ever changing entertainment.

I was surprised to spot a pop of orange.

Nature seems to arrive and disappear in waves. Mid-April, tiny periwinkle blue butterflies appeared everywhere. They flutter randomly and are highly sensitive to movement. These entertaining butterflies land a lot, then promptly close their wings. The beautiful blue wing color can only be seen on the top side. One of these days I will get a good top side photo.

This year, a couple of my red trillium bloomed! Almost. The leaves never opened flat. Good things come to those who wait.

April 19

Maybe next year they will open flat

We named our homestead Hidden Cactus Ranch. In untouched areas, you need to watch where you step! I predict a banner cactus blooming season. I will let you know if I am right. They are growing thick as thieves this year.

Cactus Cove

Shortly after taking the photo below, we no longer had as many Spring Azure's. The few I do see are smaller. Common Yellow Supher butterflies took over, in mass.

April 21

One of my favorite signs of Spring are the sound of Whippoorwhils!!! Sound up if you want to listen. Not the best audio. I was so excited that I forgot to close the front door to block out noise.

We hear Whippoorwhils at night. I know people that hate them and think they are too noisy. Not me, I love listening to them sing!

I am still waiting and watching for Hummingbirds. They are late to the Spring party this year.

another year another horse fair ~ 1 of 2

Midwest Horse Fair was last weekend. For some reason my enthusiasm for it has waned. Perhaps from decades of attending, evolving changes or just plain ol' getting older. I used to be super duper excited about, and spent Fr/Sa/Sun at Fair. It was easy going back and forth. We only lived about 15-20 minutes away. Those days are looong gone. Now we are about 40-45 minutes away, and get in and get out.

It has become such a busy weekend. We have another annual friend event that always falls on the same weekend. I questioned if we should even go this year and considered giving away our rodeo tickets and three-day entry. I am very glad we did not!

pac-man cloud, about to eat hedgehog & rabbit!

The weather at Fair can be hot, cold, sunny, rainy and almost always windy. Many times all in the same weekend. This was one of those weather fluctuating weekends. It kept people away. Especially on stormy Friday. The day we spent the most amount of time there. Which included attending the PRCA rodeo that night!

I wondered how the rodeo would feel after recently seeing the best of the best at Finals in Vegas. In one word it felt immersive!! I have never been so close to the action! For the first time, we had front row seats. The seats were you get random mud flung on you. Riders whiz past an arms length. Some hang out inches from you. Bronc riders come right at you hanging on for dear life. Bull riders jump the fence and almost land in your lap. Hoping the madder than a hornet big ol' bull chasing him doesn't also jump the fence, and take you, the bull rider and the cute toddler next to you out.

Never a dull moment in the front row of a rodeo!!

Sorry, I do not have any of my usual rodeo action photos to share. I made the decision to leave my real camera at home, b
ecause of predicted strong storms. I would have been way too close for most of them anyways. I was so immersed in the action, I did not even take any phone photos of the competitors.

The couple sitting next to me were friendly and knew the well-known award winning rodeo clown, John Harrison
The seat between us remained empty, until the clown jumped the rail and sat between us. When the action got too close, the dad held their 10 month-ish old son close.

They always include entertainment snippets at our PRCA Rodeo. IMO this year a lot of the acts were lame-o. Walking horses and waving at the crowd. Many acts were more about their outfits and riding in the dark wearing lights.

there was a gal singing beautifully in the balcony

Impressive outfit, horse, and waving...but surprisingly not moving to the music. Meh.

I felt bad for the excessive amount of controlled movement the beautiful Friesen's were asked to do, alllllll the way around the arena.

I had high hopes when I saw them come back out with chariots. Nope.

even the drill team wore lights

Thank goodness this drill team did a lot more than wave!

My favorite entertainment act was the Garrocha pole!! It has always fascinated me. Apparently Garrocha is part of Working Equitation competition.

We also attended a couple clinics, and briefly watched a cattle sorting competition. It sure looked like fun! As far as shopping we ordered a couple things, but otherwise came home empty handed. The second half of my MWHF post will follow :)

4.16.2026

everyone is talking...

...about the weather. It is a hot topic right now. WI weather has been severe for extended days, with more to come. Heavy rain downpours, thunder storms, strong winds and tornado's have placed WI under a State of Emergency. We finally bought a generator. I will sleep better once it is installed.

Weather affects everyone differently. Many not far from us have lost roofing, had building damage and giant trees uprooted. The WI river is above flood stage. Dangerously causing flooding and damage along all the connected water ways. I feel for those evacuating to safety.

You cannot tell we have had severe weather by looking at our land. So far, our trees/woods remain unscathed. Rain quickly soaks into our sandy soil. There are some benefits to living in sand country. It has turned our fields lush and green. The photo below was taken before this week's deluge of water falling from the sky.

4.13.26

Along with all the moisture, we have already had several hot and humid (yuck) days. Spring is springing on rapid fire!!

hyacinths return in a variety of colors

I continue adding a few bare root trilliums to our Enchanted Forest area each year. I hope someday to see them bloom!

returning trilliums

My garden daffodils are blooming fast. I cut some stalks that heavy rain bent. Naturalized blooms are just starting to share their cheery color and delightful scent throughout our land.

my daffy bouquet smells wonderful!

I marveled at these yellow magnolia trees. They can be finicky, but apparently not this Spring.

Our son had his excavator doing some working at our place. He took down a huge two trunk split tree that was hung up on others. Along with a couple other big tree's waiting to fall on my head. It was so fascinating to watch the action!! He cracked them like toothpicks. My son is a bad ass! I left our woods with a whole new appreciation of his occupation of choice.
