Autumnal Equinox, Goodbye to Summer

September 22nd 2013 marks the official beginning of Autumn. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere you'll notice that the sunrise is later and the sunset is earlier. You might even notice notice that the arc of the sun has shifted a bit to the south. Birds and butterflies begin migrating south as well, following the path of the sun.

In this time of year we celebrate the warm colors, the oranges, reds, and golds that remind us of the warmth of the sun as the days and nights are tinged with a nip of frost.  Our talented team of curators at Elitesixteen  has been hard at work creating beautiful autumnal themed shopping guides to help you bring a touch of the season into your wardrobe and home.

Style My || Cabin in the Woods

Do you ever create dream spaces in your head? Places that you would love to live in or that second home you would love to escape to when the weather becomes unbearable at home.  I do this on a daily basis.  All it takes is for me to see something in a magazine or while I am browsing pinterest and I start thinking about how I could build a room or even a house around it.

A cabin in the woods sounds like a perfect weekend retreat. A place to get away from the city and enjoy nature. It must be cozy and not too big.  Since you are there to enjoy the outdoors I would decorate it with natural objects or rustic meets chic.  My cabin would be a mix of reclaimed woods, pendleton fabrics, and a nod to our woodland friends. Are you ready to join me at the cabin?

Fall 2013 || Color Focus: ACAI

It's finally here, well almost here at least officially. I am talking about Fall/Autumn or whatever you may call it.  I've said this many times before but it is my absolutely favorite season of the year with Spring being number two.  With the new season comes new and fun colors to explore.  Pantone has released it's fall color palette and I am going to be sharing my favorite items on Etsy that show off these fabulous fall colors. First up is Acai, a deep purple, which always seem to be a hallmark of fall fashion.

Friday Etsy Favorites - Colorful & Modern Home Decor!

Here are the 2 things that I look for when it comes to home decor - it's got to be colorful & modern!  Sometimes I'm in the mood for a muted palette, but when it comes down to it I have to say I really love color.  Not heart pumping neons, but a flowery mix of colors with a nice dose of tension.  I've never been a fan of matchy-matchy, but rather I enjoy combining a variety of colors and patterns.  With my 4 selections today, I've pulled together a cozy nook where you can turn on the light, fluff your pillow and get snuggled for a good read!

Shades of RUST

My favorite time of year is just around the corner! Cooler temp's and cozy clothes and warm tones means Fall has arrived.  One of my very favorite colors is Rust, which is no surprise since I love anything orange. I've picked out some pillows that incorporate various shades of rust.  By adding seasonal color, through something like a pillow, you can help get your favorite lounge area ready for Fall.  What's your favorite shade of rust?

Dorm Decor 101 || Style your Space

Did you know you could furnish your whole dorm room or college apartment all from Etsy? It's pretty amazing and what's even more exciting is how unique you can make it. When I headed off to college we went to a big box store where all the generic dorm items are readily available, but can be a tad bit boring.  I remember quite a few of us having very similar items because that's just what there was to choose from for college furnishings. You have to remember this was at the start of the internet and Etsy did not yet exist. How lucky are we now?  Not only can you furnish the coolest dorm ever, but all these items would look perfect in your first place after college, too.  Going back to school may not be that fun, but shopping for it can be an adventure!

Friday Etsy Favorites - Agate

I maybe could have filed this under Design Crush, but it's Friday and I'm in love with agate.  I really don't see it is a trend because agate has been around forever, literally.  Alas, I know it is a trend as they now have fake agate coasters at Target, but it's one that will never go out of style in my opinion.
 I am the proud owner of a similar agate slice with it's own personal wooden holder designed by Lauren of Stone + Violet. I love the unique colors of these agate necklaces from Simon and Ruby. Agate + gold = awesome coasters by Kirahley Kreations.  There's no better place to display some of your favorite design books with these bookends from Alex Marie Design. I have a soft spot for natural curiosities like fossils, feathers and stones so agate is a no brainer. Are you in love with agate?

Keys to Success || The Story of Giardino

Pat and some fresh lilacs

Shop || Giardino
Owner || Pat
Founded 2009

1) When and why did you choose to open an online shop on Etsy?

Like many, I was looking for a new source of income.
In 2008 I was doing illustration and design work for companies like american greetings. In May that year my main customer told me they wouldn't have any more work for me that year as they were cutting back so I started looking around to see what different types of things I would like to pursue to fill the hole. That led me to raiding my stash of fabrics from years of art directing photo shoots for wallpaper and fabric companies (my last corporate gig in 1994 and what I did until 2005 as an freelance art director). I made some tote bags and had a party at a friends to sell them plus some cards I whipped up. Then I started looking around on the internet for places to sell them and eventually found Etsy. The tote bags didn't sell and I started making my real love - home decor and paper items. I found I like the whole process of concept to finished product, even wrapping for shipping!

2) What got you started in your craft?
I've always drawn and painted - my mother taught art in the public school system so the supplies were always around. My mom and her sisters were amazing seamstresses and I still use my grandmother's singer to make my own pieces. I'm interested in all kinds of art but love textiles and printmaking best.

3) Who or what influences your style the most?
The History of Ornament and all the other wonderful books on the history of design, magazines like World of Interiors, natural forms, history of botany and science. Right now I'm particularly enamored with Medieval art. I also love scientific art like botanical illustration.

fabric storage room and some of her designs

4) How do you stay focused and motivated?
I think about paying the bills:) Seriously, I love what I do and nothing motivates me like a deadline. If I feel stale I stop working and go out in the garden and do some weeding or go read a book for a while. I've been self employed a long time so they aren't as much of a problem for me anymore, also I live pretty frugally so I can do more of what I love.

5) What would be your insight on "Keys to Success on Etsy"?
Really hard work, good photos and enough cats around to give you encouragement and hold the fabric down.
Don't give up - if sales are slow list something new and make a bunch of treasuries, re-photograph your listings and believe in yourself (not always easy but you must).
Oh, and white wine and chocolate help too!

Fresh Five || Fall Color Preview

Our main goal is to bring you the best and brightest on Etsy.  We also want to showcase the latest or "freshest" finds, so that's why we have created the Fresh Five. The Fresh Five will be five items that are new to a shop + share a common theme. This month's theme is FALL.

Fall? Yes , it's right around the corner and my absolute favorite season of the year.  Summer's nice but it's hot and you can't really get cozy during the Summer.  Fall is about cooler weather and warmer colors.  I picked out items that represent some of my favorite colors for fall like deep teal, burnt orange and rust.

2. Tuileries Garden in Autumn || The Paris Print Shop
3. fox friend || Finkelsteins

Summer Home Stylist Series || Cinne Worthington

In today's Summer Home Stylist Series by Cinne of by Cinne Worthington, we are taken inside an imaginary world inspired by the artist Julian Schnabel.  Julian has been known for walking around the streets of New York in his paint splattered silk pajamas - a sure sign of an artists passion and focus.  Cinne takes that visual and translates it into her own work of art right here - let's call it "The Fine Art of Dining"!  What would it be like to live and work in your PJ's all day?  How would your kitchen be decorated and function to feed both your belly and your creative spirit?  Great questions!

With each of her selections, Cinne has created a world where you keep your artist's inspiration close by your side at all times.  Sitting down for a scone?  Keep the art utensils at your place setting - never know when you have to switch between a fork and a pencil!  Have a stand for your cookbook?  Yup, it's now the perfect place to put artwork for inspiration and offers the flexibility of changing it up depending on your creative mood.  Cinne keeps the furnishings fresh and funky by reupholstering various mid century chairs - a sure way to keep the energy flowing as your eye works from one pattern to the other.  This dining experience would be filled with vibrant colors and light would twinkle off the over-the-top elegance and shine off the contemporary styling - shall we call it roco?  Wall space would be artfully decorated with an eclectic flair and wall spaces above cabinets would showcase artwork.  It's clear that as an artist, Cinne understands how to channel that passion into home decor!

Wow, Cinne - what an awesome space to live in!  I'm inspired to pick up my breakfast plate and step into this world.  I'm glad I get to keep my PJ's on all day too!  What about you?  Will you join me?
