Big Birthday Heart

Hi Crafters,

how have you been?

I am suffering from crafter's block these days. Mostly caused by the mess in my craft room, that never gets cleaned up, because there is so much more urgent house work to do all the time. Tonight's happy plan is folding a ton of laundry, yuk! The weather has been nice and dry, I've been washing like a maniac, so I could dry it outside.

Anyways, today I have a very simple stencilled and doodled Birthday card for you. One of my very rare one layer cards. Not much to explain, pretty straight forward.

Have a beautiful day

Challenge up your life: Challenge #78 Two Die Cuts/Punches

Hello Crafters,

how time flies. It's almost Halloween, which is traditionally the point in time, when I switch from worrying about being late for the Halloween Party preparationsto whirring in Christmas panic mode.

But there is always time for a Challenge at

This time, we ask you to get out your die cutting machines and use

Challenge #78 Two Die Cuts/Punches

My card this time is very simple, as I was running late and my schedule was busy. I revisited an idea I had used before, but made it into something new.

Here is the original idea:

I coloured the die cut with distress inks in fall colours and stamped a simple Birthday greeting in brown ink. I debated long with myself whether to doodle a border or  not - well I shouldn't have, I don't like how it turned out, but since I had already adhered the leaves, I didn't want to start over.

So, now it's your turn, what will you create?

Hugs
Ela

Harry Potter Halloween Party

Hi Crafters,

maybe you still remember, that I promised to show my Harry Potter Halloween party decorations, as soon as my friend would send me the pictures she took. Well, I still don't have them, she's always very busy, so I decided to go ahead with the ones I took. I did not take pictures of everything, because I had planned to take them when it was all finished, but food preparations took so much longer, that the "all finished status" was reached about one hour into the party... So no time to take pictures.

But I checked my mobile and my camera for what I had and here it is.... Sorry that some of the photos are of rather bad quality, they were never meant to go online.

First things first: the invitation card and envelope. I embossed a grey panel with a spider's web embossing folder went over the raised parts and edges with white pigment ink. Then I matted it with a lilac panel and adhered it to an orange card base. Next, I created the sentiment strip, which I adhered with foam tape.
By the way, I didn't have lilac cards stock, so I used white and coloured it with an alcohol marker.

The spider is a cheap plastic Halloween prop, adhered with hot glue. It's rather bulky, but none of the cards went in the mail, so who cares.

For the envelopes I just doodled a spider on a string and a few webs. The cards were all the same, but each of the envelopes was a little different.

Normally, our house is not open to the street, the entrance is behind a high gate, so no one can look into the garden. But for the occasion we opened the gate and decorated the cobbled front area near the entrance. There is a second, very old gate a few meters further back, which we closed instead, so the garden was still closed off.

We carved a pumpkin, set up three store bought gravestones and lighted a few red grave yard candles around them. Although that doesn't sound all that special, it looked pretty cool.

Inside we decorated quite a bit more. Most of the things are handmade, or altered somehow and most ideas are from the internet.

First off, a flock of hand cut cardstock bats. They cost me several evenings, but were totally worth it.

When I found the printable Harry Potter labels  on the Internet, I instantly decided, that I need a devil's workshop. So I collected all kinds of small bottles for a while and tried to make the best of them. The ones that didn't let go of their labels easily, I painted black.

This one is hard to see, because I had to take the picture against the sun. I used heaps if small plastic spiders (the same ones I had on the invitations) and sewed them to my kitchen curtain. I also stuck some on the wall and the window pane, so it would look like they were crawling from all directions (actually only three directions) towards a little cracked hole in the window. The crack I sketched on with a white-out marker.

My mother in law had some old white candles that had lost their form a bit over time. I made good use of them, by dribbling on red wax from another old candle around the top and letting it run down. I put them up all over the house, but unfortunately I didn't take a picture of them in place. This picture I took when I created them, to show my friend how creepy they turned out.

For the Halloween sweets I used mason jars in different sizes. and printed out some Harry Potter sweets labels, which I didn't adhere to the jars, because I wanted to re-use them for something else. Instead I folded the labels like a place card and placed them next to each jar.

The star among these were definitely the eye balls. I personally think they are totally disgusting, they are wobbly and look way to real for my taste. But the kids all love them. We get them for every Birthday, no matter what the motto is.

In the jar on the second photo are jelly beans, ahem, every flavor beans. On the last picture, there are spider-lollipops, created with a lollipop, googly eyes and black pipe cleaners.

This is one of the soap dispensers I prepared. I removed the label and somehow managed to get the plastic skeleton through the opening. That was a pretty tight fit, and it helped a lot that it was a rubbery, bendy plastic. I prepared a second dispenser with rubbery cockroaches, which creeped me out myself, every time I went into the bathroom. I really regret not having a picture to show you.

Unfortunately there are some more pictures missing. We hung artificial spider's webs in all kinds of places, especially in the bathroom were the wall is kind of catchy and keeps the webs in place perfectly.
A  white towel with bloody hand marks was hung over the bath tub as if it belonged there. We also hung up a few Halloween lanterns and garlands and used heaps of old jam jar mummy lights to light the place. I didn't want to burn the tall bloody candles, but in the glass jars I decided open fire was safe enough.

Last but not least of my party decorations, I spent weeks (a lot of drying time) creating spell books for the event. I found this idea, like so many, on the internet. I used old hardcover books, glued on plastic toys and some additional details, like the spider's web (hot glue), the corners and stipes (self-adhering magnetic tape, just because it was lying on my desk and had a straight edge) and the die cut letters (fun foam) for the titles.

When all the glue had dried, I covered the books with mod podge and a single layer of paper towel, making sure there were a lot of nice creases and wrinkles, but at the same time as much detail as possible on the plastic toys and letters.

After this was dry, I painted the books with acrylic paints (black and dark brown) and after yet more drying time I brushed on either gold or silver acrylic paint, to enhance all the details.

These are only some of the books I created, again I don't have pictures of all of them.
Later on I created even more books as Christmas gifts for my girls and their Dad. For those I used cheap empty note books and adhered the names instead of grimoire titles.

Right from the start I also had the idea to create "the Monster book of Monsters" from Harry Potter, but didn't have a good idea. Until one day inspiration sparked. I decided to cover the largest of my books with fur and glue vampire's teeth to the edges, like in the movie. I found the perfect greyish black werewolf fur in a shop and the perfect yellowed teeth in the super market. Then I wrote the label with a silver pearl maker pen and fixed it to the fur with some brads that look like screws. The teeth I had to trim a bit, so they would fit better on the straight edge and adhered them with hot glue directly to the book. There is a slit in the fur there.

What you can't see in the picture: I used a shortened old belt to tie it shut. We wouldn't want our guests to get bitten, would we?

Of course, no party could end without treat bags for the guest to take away. We filled rubber gloves with sweets and  adorned each with a plastic spider ring, that was in one of the deco packs we bought.
As you can see, Nala, the cat, was very interested - she's always were the fun is...

And at the very end: here is it all, nearly packed up. Party in a box for next year. Only 279 days to go.

Creepy Halloween greetings

Copic no-line colouring

Hey Crafters out there,

hope you're all doing well.

Today I'd like to show you another card I made with the same Penny Black stamp as before.

This time I used my my alcohol markers and had another go at no-line colouring. I cut the focal panel smaller this time and used a second panel in black and a grey card base with rounded corners.

I liked the doodled border I did the other day, so I did that again. But I think there's still something missing.

See you soon

Tall and skinny Birthday card

Hi Crafters,

I spent a happy evening crafting last night. I really want to get back to doing more challenges. They are such a nice starting point and inspire me a lot...

And of course there are all those new supplies I received during the Easter  holidays.

So, I grabbed the same Penny Black flower stamp as before and went for some no-line colouring. I really want to master that technique someday. I inked up the petals in pink, the rest in light green distress ink and stamped it off once before stamping it to watercolour paper. This way the impression wasn't too bold and I could cover it up with my colouring.

Then I water coloured the image with my Inktense pencils. I usually take the pigment directly from the tip, I find that easier than dissolving it when it's been applied directly to dry the paper.

After the colours had dried,  I stamped the sentiment, dropped on some black splotches and doodled a black border with a Copic Multiliner. Then I cut the panel to a  tall and skinny size and adhered it to an off-white card base.

I did not yet create an envelope, because of the unusual size. But I surely will soon.

Just a note

Hey Crafters,

I played some more with my new Dylusions and used the panel I created to cover my card base.

Then I stamped the flower stamp with archival ink on a piece of water color paper. I wanted to try out how the spray inks work if used as a water color medium, so I wet the petals and dropped in just a bit of the inks, letting them spread naturally. I ended up helping them along quite a bit with my brush in the end. They do spread out on the wet paper, but I like my Inktense pencils better.

I cut the flowers to a narrow panel, added a sentiment and some faux stitching and adhered it to my bright card base.
Not my favorite card, but I am still in the process of trying out my new Dylusions and for that it was quite fun and instructing.

Challenge up your life: Challenge #12 Embossing

Hi Crafters,

another two weeks have passed like nothing, spring should be serious about its business now, but it's letting us wait. It's been cold, wet and stormy the past week.
Anyway, it's time for another challenge over at

This time we are challenging you to bring texture to your cards:

Challenge #12 Embossing

Heat or dry embossing or embossing paste, that's completely up to you, just have fun with it.
I decided to create another mad doodle card, with lots and lots of bright colors and combine it with black embossing paste.

After I defined the areas with a black Copic Multiliner, I filled them with different patterns. Then I colored all the patterns with bright Copics. No shading, just plain bright! Same patterns always get the same colors. After all was colored, I outlined the areas again, first with the Multiliner and then with a white gel pen, to make them more defined. I also added a sketchy white outline around the card panel.

Then I colored a tiny bit of embossing paste with black paint and stenciled it on thickly. Here's a close up:

While the paste dried, I created the card base and handwritten sentiment, which I deliberately cut out quite crooked. When all was done and dried, I added sketchy white lines to the black bird, to define it and make it stand out more.

By the way, my daughter also liked the bright colors, so she created something very similar, though without embossing paste. And her dedication to her projects even inspired her friends who we've had visiting the other day, to join in. Soon we had 5 kids coloring with full concentration, while my friend and I had a very calm, relaxed cup of coffee.

I hope you’ll all join us this week and create something with embossing.

Mad doodling

Hi Crafters,

today I have something entirely different to show you, though it is still a card.

These days I stumbled across the wonderful designs of Dyan Reaveley, creator of Dylusions, and I spent about two night watching her videos. I am in love with what she does, ever since I first saw her works, but I don't have any of her spray mists and have actually shied away from the mess. I have a dedicated craft space, but it is in my living room and it's messy enough as it is.

However, right now I really wish I could afford to buy all her beautiful bright mists, and stencils and stamp sets.

Inspired by that feeling, I decided to follow one of her video tutorials and doodle a little - well a lot.

First I created random curved intersecting lines with my Copic Multiliner. Than I picked 4-5 areas for each pattern, doodling in the spaces. With that done, I colored the patterns with bright alcohol markers. Then I traced the areas again with the black liner.

Half way through the process, I realized that the stencil I had in mind didn't work the way I wanted it, so I changed the plan and used a flower instead, which is more intricate that I would have wanted for this. The black acrylic paint I sponged all over it seeped underneath quite a bit, probably would have been better with a more solid image (or more care).

The edges of the black paint I faded out a little with a baby wipe. After the paint had dried, I added sketchy white doodling, a simple white sentiment banner and adhered it all to a white card base.

Admitedly, I am disappointed that he image didn't turn out as crisp, but as Dyan says: it can be messy, you needn't be neat!

I hope you'll like it, though it's so entirely different from what I usually do. Have a nice day

Guesting for The Alley Way Stamps - Part 2

Hello Crafters,

as you may have read, I am a guest designer for The Alley Way Stamps this month. I am so glad and grateful to have been given this chance.

So, without further ado, here is the third card I created for TAWS.

When I first saw the set Petal Pushers  it immediately screamed out to me: Doodle. So I absolutely wanted to try and create some faux doodling with the smaller images from the set.

I picked a water color panel I had done and not used earlier (for Elsa) and stamped the images directly onto it in black ink. I started with the bold negative flower as a center and started to build my doodle from there.

As a sentiment I picked the Hello there from the same set and white embossed it on a black cardstock banner. Then I cut a vellum banner to match and adhered it off center underneath the black banner. I only adhered the right side, so the forked ends can fly up a bit.

Then I decided to sew on the banners as well, but my sewing machine failed me and I ended up with a very crooked pierced line and no thread. So in the end I hand stitched most of it. At last I added a few white accents with a gel pen and rounded the corners.

For my next card I wanted to do something bright and bold with alcohol markers, so I picked the border stamp from Petal Pushers and stamped it at an angle across a front panel several times.

Then I chose some bright alcohol markers and colors in the image and cut along the top line. I white embossed the German sentiment (Birthday wishes) along the line of my panel onto a bright green card base, doodled a white border for just a little bit extra and adhered the panel with foam pads.

I immensely enjoyed being a guest designer for TAWS, thanks Chrissie and Alison for the chance. I'll be happy to do that again any time.

Wishing you all a great time
Ela

Christmas Owl

Hi Crafters,

I really haven't gotten around to much crafting lately.
One of my daughters is still ill and can't go to school, but I have to work from homeoffice anyway. And I am under the weather myself. I lost my voice almost entirely and that had to happen this very week, when my office phone never stopped ringing and my daughter wanted to chat practically all day.

Anyway, I absolutely wanted to participate in this months Challenge over at Gerda Steiner Designs, because I've seen Julia from Just one more Card use this sweetest owl of all.

I don't often use digi stamps, because my printer's ink bleeds terribly, with just about every coloring medium there is. But my colleague has an old laser printer to give away, so if I can somehow fit it in, I'll be able to use digital images more regularly. And I absolutely WANTED that owl!

I printed the owl with my normal printer, so I had to use my watercolor pencils without water. Then I masked off a circle around the owl to watercolor the nightsky background. I was very careful, to color as close to the lines as possible, without touching them. It worked better than I had thought. Unfortunately the color seeped underneath my mask, so I had to cut it down after all.

That ruined my plan for this card, so it took me quite some time to figure out how to finish it off. In the end I used my last craft cardbase, heat embossed the sentiment in white and added a doodled border to it. Then I  adhered the framed circle and the snowflakes.

I am also adding this card to two sketch challenges. I think it fits both, interpreted a bit losely.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.
