I Hear a New World Vol.22

The latest edition of I Hear a New World is available to listen to here, and to listen\download at http://ihearanewworld.podomatic.com/ . After a long period of silence, I am happy to say that I am back again. Sadly, events beyond my control have prevented me from compiling and recording a new podcast during the past few months, but I have a feeling that this podcast will more than make up for my absence. Today's podcast is mostly inspired by the eclectic radio shows featured on the new Portland radio station http://xray.fm . Since its inception a couple months ago, I have been obsessively listening to a few of these shows such as Live Vinyl Treats , Hot Fudge Sundaze  and Headbanded . Afterwards, I usually find myself scouring through my hard drive looking for songs, extemporaneously compiling mixes on the fly that would be perfect for this podcast. The range of tunes on this edition of I Hear a New World run the gamut from free-jazz funk, folk-jazz, hip-hop, psychedelic, el...

Blood Curdling Sounds of the Night

The Halloween edition of the I Hear a New World Podcast is available to listen to here, and to listen/download at http://ihearanewworld.podomatic.com . Last night, while working diligently at finishing this mix before the weekend was over, I found myself struggling with the reality that I couldn't make this year's mix be everything to all people.    When my girlfriend inquired as to how things were going, I told her that I was having difficulties with trying to round it out with songs that were less scary and more suitable for a general audience. She smiled and said "I bet there are some people out there who would really appreciate a scary Halloween mix".  Thankfully,  my girlfriend was able to steer me in the right direction with her infinite wisdom. From here, all the pieces started to gradually fall into place.  I worked on narrowing the amount of songs from over forty...

I Hear a New World Vol.19

The latest edition of I Hear a New World is available to listen to here, and to listen\download at http://ihearanewworld.podomatic.com/ . On this edition of I Hear a New World , I have deviated from the usual Stacks of Wax format to make way for some of the newer records that I have been listening to lately. My girlfriend and I have been operating with a single income for a couple years now since she was diagnosed with a systemic digestive disorder that has rendered her unable to work at all.  Since times have been hard, I haven't been able to purchase enough new vinyl to keep the podcasts interesting. Until there is a shift in my financial situation, I will be doing podcasts from albums that I have on my hard drive. For those of you who would like to help, please consider making a small donation to my Paypal page from http://www.podomatic.com/podcast/.  Every dollar earned from this will go straight into buying records that will be played on future p...

Previous Halloween podcasts can be downloaded at the following locations: House of Horros 2008 Halloween Hodgepodge 2009 Halloween Hodgepodge 2010 Every year towards the end of October, I start getting that itch to dig into my haunted vault of spook-tacular tracks to compile a new Halloween podcast. This year, I managed to get the podcast completed ahead of time so that you can all enjoy it during the week before Halloween. As usual, this mix is definitely not for the faint-hearted, so I strongly suggest that you don't listen to this in the dark on a stormy evening. I can't be held responsible for what might happen to you while listening to this mix, so please proceed with caution, and do remember to close all the windows and lock the doors. Oh, and for those of you who would like a tracklist for this mix, ...

I Hear a New World Vol.17

The latest edition of I Hear a New World is available to listen to here, and to listen\download at http://ihearanewworld.podomatic.com/ . Back when I used to have more time on my hands, I listened to music for hours in a row, and in turn created eclectic mixes on the fly by manically scouring through the plethora of files residing on my two external hard drives. For the most part, it was delayed so long because I neglected to store the songs in its own folder, which meant that I had to search my two external hard drives for the files. At some point, I just decided to download a few of them from Soulseek, as I was unable to recall where I had moved them.  Even though this mix has been shelved since sometime in 2007, I feel that it deserves to be heard in all its glory. I have several eclectic mixes that were created in this same fashion that will eventually make their way onto future podcasts. This one features a heavy dose of blues and soul, ...

The latest edition of I Hear a New World is available to listen to here, and to listen\download at http://ihearanewworld.podomatic.com/ . This edition of I Hear a New World starts off slow with the rumbling sounds of a train seguing into a road-worn-instrumental, but it gradually builds up to a boil by the middle of the set with a mix of garage, R&B and noise, only to close with a stellar jazz tune. Artists featured on this edition of the show are Long John Hunter, Billy Mure, Ngozi Family, Mahavishnu Orchestra and The Hospitals. Don't Call It a Comeback...

I apologize for the station identification, but I needed to get some things sorted over the past few weeks. After reading through the thoughtful comments on my last post, I have decided to make a few changes around here that will hopefully encourage more readers to actively participate on the blog. For the time being, I have decided that I will not be going private with the blog. Second, there will be a couple new features premiering shortly; one that focuses on live concerts and another that is a continuation of a series I used to do on Ear Fuzz called  Anatomy of a Sample.  Third, I have decided to stick with Mediafire, but will no longer list the artist or album in the file name. Next, I will start password-protecting the links and the links will be placed in the comments instead of at the end of the post. Last, since the majority of commenters suggested that I focus on new posts first and upload old files upon request,...

I Hear a New World- Paving the Road to Acceptance and Resolution

Image
As I sit here all warm and cozy inside my four-walled world, heat cranked up to the max on this blustery night, I feel like giving thanks for some fundamental things in my life. I am thankful that I don't have to sleep on a downtown street corner in the bitter cold , that I have the love of a beautiful woman, clothes to wear, medicine to keep me healthy and especially that I have amazing friends and family who are there to help me through the challenges that life poses for me each and every day. Most importantly, I am thankful that I am living and breathing today, because not everyone is so fortunate. In the past month, the music world has lost three stellar musicians: Hubert Sumlin, Howard Tate and Sam Rivers. Hubert Sumlin, the masterful guitar player for Howlin' Wolf's band, died of heart failure in a hospital in New Jersey at the age of 80 on December 4th. He left behind a musical legacy that will never be surpassed, and his signature playing style h...

I Hear a New World- Eclectic Mishmash

The latest edition of I Hear a New World is available for download here, and at http://ihearanewworld.podomatic.com/ . Over the past year, I have been primarily taking songs from my vinyl collection to compile the podcasts and using an Olympus portable recorder to do this. The sound quality of these podcasts has been sort of lackluster since the microphone input isn't plugged directly into the stereo source. Because of this, I have decided to start doing podcasts compiling songs from my extensive digital library for awhile. I will return to the Stacks of Wax format as I purchase more vinyl and have new things to share with you. This edition of I Hear a New World was originally compiled a few years ago, but it is only being fully realized during this moment. I used to listen to lots of music while I was hanging out in my apartment and would create extemporaneous mixes that seemed to have a specific flow to them. This was the result of one of these sessions where I wrote dow...

I Hear a New World Podcast- Best Albums of 2010

Well, I know that Eclectic Grooves has been neglected lately, but serious life issues have materialized recently that have required more of my time and energy. This is not to say that I will be abandoning the site though, as I have a couple huge posts coming up over the next month. One of these posts is the massive list of my favorite albums of 2010 that I have been compiling over the past couple months. I am certain that there are still going to be some albums coming out in December that may deserve to be on this list, but I plan to have this list done no later than December 15th. With that being said, today's I Hear a New World Podcast focuses on music released in 2010 that will likely be included on my year-end list. I have included a setlist below just in case you are unable to catch the artists and song titles from my repartee throughout the show The latest edition of I Hear a New World is available for download here, and at http://ihearanewworld.podomatic.com/. I would love...
