Still Icy/ Watery Wednesday

 Icicles made by splashing water

Sunday it was windy and the water in Lake Ontario was rough - many big waves.

Melting/ Watery Wednesday

Snowy creek banks with soft edges and reflections

For us in central Ontario this is NOT likely the last of the snow. But whatever does fall, melts fairly quickly.

Snowy "islands" of snow caught on weeds

Winter Kayaker/ Watery Wednesday

 Kayaker entering Whitby Harbour

Not everyone puts their kayak away and hangs up their paddles for the winter months.  This hardy kayaker must believe in the proverb "There is no bad weather, only the wrong gear."

Gilford Ice Fishers/Watery Wednesday

 Gilford: arriving by bicycle

Last Saturday the ice on Cook's Bay was about 23 centimetres (9 inches) thick so fishers from miles around arrived there in droves.  This year fishers parked their cars on terra firma as the ice was not  really safe enough for cars or trucks.  To reach their ice houses, fishers rode across the ice on bikes, all-terrain vehicles... or walked.

 Pulling a sledge

Some of you dear readers have wondered who'd be "crazy" enough to fish in the cold. The easy answer is: lots of people, mostly men but some women and kids too. Many of the fishers are not Canadians but Americans who've traveled north for the pleasure.

 Canine helper

And even a few dogs enjoyed a day out on the ice.

On all-terrain vehicle and on foot

The huts were a fair distance from the shore so for some it was a chore to get all their gear to their fishing spots, although this guy didn't seem to mind.

 Even kids haul gear!

And these boys were quite excited to be fishing with dad.

What are they fishing for?

A pailful of perch

In this shallow water, they were catching perch.

Many thanks to Rob of Gilford Yellow Huts, Inc. (gilfordyellowhuts.com) who answered many questions my husband and I had about fishing here.

Making a Splash/ Watery Wednesday

Lighthouse at end of pier, Coboug, Ontario

Yesterday afternoon the water was rough on Lake Ontario.

 Wave splashing onto pier

The pier was icy but the coast guard was allowing cars to drive out to see the action.

BIG splash

Beside me, but out of the photo, was an Ontario Provincial Police van making sure no one moved too close to the end of the pier. For sure  I didn't want to get in any closer. I was already COLD and didn't need to be splashed on. Brrrr.

Icy Cold/ Watery Wednesday

 Icy cold but not ice!

Last Saturday my camera lens captured blue skies and fluffy clouds in the east but the sun was actually behind overcast skies in the west. The shore in the distance was in sun, while the shore I was standing on was in shade.

 Waves splashing onto the shore

The sunny morning was turning into a moody afternoon.

Lake Ontario/ Watery Wednesday

Lake Ontario two days before Christmas

I was looking for ducks to photograph but the water was choppy and the ducks were hiding from the wind and waves.

Sauble Beach/ Watery Wednesday

Sauble Beach, Ontario

In early November, it was too cold to swim or sun bathe, but not too cold to walk on the beach.

Sauble Falls/ Watery Wednesday

Sauble Falls near Sauble Beach, Ontario

On a partly cloudy day earlier in November, my husband and I took a day trip to the shores of Lake Huron. We had heard about this falls and wanted to see it for ourselves. We've had plenty of rain this month so the water was rushing over the the many rocks in the river.

This photo was taken from the southerly side of the river.

Two fishers just below the falls

We also walked the trail on the north side of the falls to get a different view. I don't know if these guys caught any fish. The weather was fairly warm so they may have been content to be out enjoying some quality time with Mother Nature.

Kinda Lonely/ Watery Wednesday

Not many boats left in the water on Cook's Bay

It was a Friday afternoon - late in the boating season and also in the day.

Empty almost

I guess a few diehards haven't given up...yet.

Here's where one boat will spend the winter

Sauble Beach/ Watery Wednesday

Bicycling on Sauble Beach, Lake Huron, Ontario

Sunday afternoon less than hour till sunset, it was windy and the waves were tumbling into shore when two bicyclists  rolled along the waters edge.

FYI: In thee foreground you see some dried grass. I was climbing a sand dune when I saw the bicycles and snapped the shutter quickly to catch the riders.

Stopping to take a good look at the waves
