uberX Reduced Prices: Rides Now Cost Less Across KL

For those of us who love using uberX to get around KL, there's reason to celebrate: uberX has reduced its rates by up to 15 percent starting January 18 this year, making it cheaper for us to reach restaurants, run errands & travel in fuss-free comfort. Over the past several weeks, we've taken multiple rides that underscore how uberX is now increasingly preferable to driving.

If you're working in Damansara Uptown & you're heading to 1 Utama for a shopping break, or better still a business or leisure lunch at Ante (our favourite new restaurant in this mall), our recent 4.4-kilometre ride from Uptown to Utama cost only RM7.01 - a nice result, since we saved on parking charges at 1 Utama & the extra time it would have taken to find a parking spot there.

Time for tea? uberX could take you from Bangsar to Foo Foo, Taman Tun Dr Ismail's newest destination for desserts, for RM13.44 (according to our ride experience, excluding a RM2 toll fee on the SPRINT highway, which is added to your total bill) - a fair cost, considering the 24 minutes required for the journey, door-to-door.

Even a trip from the suburbs to the city centre won't weigh too heavily on your wallet now - if you're searching for an off-the-beaten-path spot for dinner one evening, it could be worth travelling to the new Sarang, which serves Peranakan temptations near Bukit Bintang. Our 12-kilometre uberX trip between Desa Sri Hartamas & Sarang on Jalan Galloway cost only RM12.32.

And finally, in this season of festive feasting with the family, leave the car behind & rely on uberX - share a trip together from Bangsar to Desa Sri Hartamas for just RM7.26; get dropped off right in front of Steaks & Lobsters for a happy prosperity toss!

If you haven't used Uber yet, it's time to begin! For new users, follow the steps below to redeem your first two rides for free:
1. Download the Uber app from the App Store, Play Store or Windows Store - and register your Uber account.
2. Apply the code EATDRINKKL as your first promotional code & you'll receive 2 Free Rides worth RM30 each.
3. Request a ride through the app and ride for free to any destination (with two ride values of up to RM30 each).

Many thanks to uberX for partnering with Eat Drink KL!

Using Uber in Penang & Dubai

It's been more than three months since we began using Uber to take us to our destinations safely - everywhere, everyday - throughout the Klang Valley. Encouraged by our experience, we felt confident about relying exclusively on Uber when we went out of town twice in September, in Penang & Dubai. Here are some thoughts on why Uber turned out to be the right choice.

1. Using Uber in George Town is more affordable than expected.

We took Uber to every restaurant, cafe & kopitiam in Penang that we visited for three days - the total cost of our transport expenses was below RM100, easily shared among three of us. George Town is pretty compact, so most of our Uber rides cost only several ringgit - a worthwhile price to pay for efficient, hassle-free travelling.

2. Using Uber will save you time & effort in George Town.

Everyone's on a tight schedule while travelling - we had more than a dozen venues to visit in George Town. Uber spared us the stress of searching for parking - a scarce commodity on Penang's narrow streets - if we had been driving ourselves, or of looking for places to hail a cab, or of waiting for buses & figuring out where to stop before walking to find our destinations.

3. George Town's drivers are really nice to out-of-towners!

Penang is still new to Uber, which launched here this year. Based on our interaction with George Town drivers, they're enthusiastic, positive & happy to chat with out-of-town riders, sharing their thoughts on where to go & what to eat. Most of our rides only lasted 10 minutes or so, but nearly every driver managed to make us feel warmly welcome in Penang.

And Dubai?

1. Using Uber abroad is a smooth, seamless experience.

The transition from using Uber in KL to Uber in Dubai is entirely effortless, thanks to Uber's well-honed international network & capabilities - simply open the app & request your ride as usual. The ride is charged in the local currency of the country you're visiting. If you're accustomed to using Uber in Malaysia, you'll find it an absolute breeze in Dubai & many other cities overseas.

2. Uber's standards remain reassuringly high outside Malaysia.

Using Uber in Dubai provided us with a consistent reminder of everything we like about Uber. The comfort, the ease, the efficiency & safety - it was all there in Dubai. We found rides promptly across the city, we could relax in our passenger seats, & we were never late for appointments. Dubai was a pleasure to visit for an extended weekend, & Uber made it even better.

3. No more worries about planning for public transport & currency in a foreign land.

No more poring over Metro maps to figure out which train route to take, no more fiddling for change to buy tram tickets. Uber relieves some of the logistical bothers of exploring a foreign city, making it convenient to reach Dubai's malls & creeks & to savour the city's wide-ranging food. And you'll still get a flavour of the city in the car, with one-to-one personal interaction with your Uber driver - the guys we met were mostly friendly & filled with tips about what to try (we loved the camel burger, Atif!).

AND IF YOU'RE READING THIS IN SINGAPORE:
Lifetime has teamed up with Grain in Singapore to also curate a special dinner menu for the premiere of #MasterChefAsia. Each order also includes 4 different meals!

SINGAPORE MENU & INSTRUCTIONS:

Unadon with Winter Vegetables Nimono

Japanese lovers, take notice: your unadon is now available with your nimono (those simmered vegetables that we all love munching on). You know what they say about two is better than one - it all comes out in this dish. Stewed in bonito and pork broth for 6 hours, the vegetables come out tender, giving you all the flavors you’ve come to love.

Grilled Artichoke Baked Frittata

Artichoke lovers and non-lovers alike are sure to dig into this simple (but tedious) artichoke egg frittata - sans meat. Artichoke is char-grilled, then marinated with olive oil, oregano, vinegar and salty love for 5 days and 5 nights. Throw this resulting flavorful delight with eggs baked with love and behold, grilled artichoke, baked frittata.

Bibimbap with Grilled Red Chicken

Bibimbap has always been a traditionally healthy Korean dish. And... we have just upped the mark. With brown and black rice, our bibimbap 2.0 is a mix of complex carbs, pumping slow energy to fuel your day. Topped with grilled red chicken and vegetables, take a trip to Korea and be back within the hour. We promise you’ll still have energy left over. Enjoy mildly warm or at room temperature.

Tarragon Yoghurt Chicken on Spring Vegetables Salad
This meal hugs the palate with great intensity. The chicken pairs great with yoghurt and tarragon, unfolding a sensual aftertaste and a smart sweetness, which balances its aroma perfectly. This is the perfect way to pick yourself up after a hectic work week.
READY TO EAT?
Ordering your On-Demand dinner in Singapore is also as easy as requesting your ride: Open your Uber app on Sept 3rd, between 7:00pm and 8:30pm. Toggle over the MasterChef Asia option that appears in the app, and request your meal. We’ll be at your door in minutes to deliver your delicious meal for four - right in time for the 9:00pm MasterChef Asia premiere on Lifetime. Demand will be sky-high, so move fast. We’ll take of the cravings, and the payment!

UberMAKAN: Celebrating Our Malaysian-ness

Whether it’s nasi lemak, char kuey teow or roti canai, food has the power to bring Malaysians together, regardless of race, religion or background. And in conjunction with Merdeka this month, Uber is launching a unique campaign to connect Malaysians to our favourite national pasttime.

This Saturday, 22 August 2015, from 11am to 5pm, Uber will be driving users to the ‘hidden gems’ of our city: hand-picked eateries that serve authentic, soul-warming Malaysian favourites.

With parking woes a recurring headache for most Malaysians, Uber aims to alleviate this by allowing foodies to travel to these places in a simpler, more convenient way with their own private driver. Among the local favourites that users will be able to enjoy include laksa, banana leaf rice, char kuey teow and cendol.

1. Download the Uber app from the App Store or Play Store.

2. Once signed in, slide to the ‘MAKAN’ option and tap ‘Set Pickup Location’,

3. If there is an available MAKAN vehicle in the vicinity, you’ll be picked up in minutes!

4. Once picked up, your driver will provide you with a list of options and you’ll be driven to the outlet of your choice.

5. Riders will be charged RM15 to their Uber account - this will be for the entire experience of being driven to the outlet, as well as the return journey (excludes the price of the food).

Additionally, Uber is also partnering with popular food bloggers to lend an interesting twist to this event. Under the special ‘MAKANBuffet’ option in the Uber app, users will have the chance to be accompanied on their culinary adventure by these selected ‘Makan Guides’ - who will be happy to share with riders their love for Malaysian food.

For the MAKANBuffet option, riders and 2 of their friends will be able to eat to their heart’s content at these local gems, and only be charged a flat rate of RM58 - this charge will also be automatically charged to their Uber app, and there will be no cash payment involved.

“All Malaysians, regardless of background, share a love for good food and that’s exactly what we want to celebrate this Merdeka. We believe in using our technology to bring joy to people, and we want to let KLites enjoy their favourite Malaysian delights, with their friends and family minus all the hassle that comes with driving in the city,” says Leon Foong, General Manager of Uber Malaysia.

Demand is expected to be very high, so don’t give up if UberMAKAN is not available immediately. Be part of the #UberMAKAN community - share your experience and be sure to tag #UberMAKAN on Twitter (@uber_my) and Instagram (@uber_my).
