Hakurin TTDI

Taman Tun's newest Japanese restaurant puts a sleek spin on snacks and skewers, tinged with Malaysian twists. Start with two wagyu wonders: The Belacan Wagyu Maki is made memorable with a bit of belacan on top, bringing fermented umami to this beefy roll (RM48), while the Hakurin Chahan is fried not only with crispy wagyu lard but crunchy ikan bilis for an addictive rice bowl  (RM20).

Poultry is a pleasure too - it's easy to imagine ordering multiple plates of the deliciously seasoned Jidori Karaage, fried spring chicken with a kaffir lime mayo dip (RM20), and Kawa Kinoko Itame, a medley of sautéed mushrooms with fried chicken skin and bonito flakes (RM25). If chicken skin is your irresistible indulgence, also check out the unique skewer of crunchy-creamy skin-wrapped garlic (RM10).

The kushiyaki menu comprises most of the yakitori staples, from salt-and-pepper-seasoned sunagimo (RM8) to bonjiri (RM8), though reba is conspicuously missing. It's worth ordering the gingko nuts, sweet potato and sweet corn too (RM8 each), each satisfyingly grilled with a gentle smokiness.

Finish with black sesame ice cream; service is excellent at Hakurin, elevating the experience even further.

Neutrals, Taman Tun Dr Ismail

If you're biased in favour of flora-filled cafes, Neutrals should win your vote as TTDI's most inviting new space. Plant your roots here with fiddle-leaf figs on one corner, potted ferns hanging from the ceiling, and staghorns branching out of the wall, soaking up the sunshine that streams from the windows.

Neutrals marks a collaboration between PJ's The Roast Things coffee roasters and Bangsar South's Sunbather Coffee, with the former handling the caffeine.

After seven years of supplying beans to countless cafes and running two of its own (Cream and TGT In Life), The Roast Things can be relied on for our fix of flat whites (RM12; add RM2 for oat milk), pleasantly light with a gentle tang and smooth finish.

Don't skip the seasonal kombucha, currently a blend of apple and thyme (RM16), easy-drinking with a mellow fermentation.

Sunbather's sandos should be ready for takeouts this weekend - Japanese-style sandwiches, thickly stuffed with playful ingredients in house-baked rye bread. Combos will include the Ajitsuke Tamago Sando, Scotch Egg Sando, Maple Chicken Sando, Fish Katsu Sando, Spiced Mushroom Sando and Tofu Katsu Sando (RM20-RM35).

Bento-style meals will also be available, including the Beef Chizu Hambagu Bento, Marmalade Chicken Bento, Teriyaki Chicken Bento and Grilled Salmon Bento (RM25-RM31).

Quiches will include the Unagi & Leek, Smoked Salmon & Potato, and Quiche Lorraine (RM19-RM21).

For now, check out the cute sando-inspired signature Scones, tall and colourful, with comfortingly cakey textures and layered flavours (RM12 each). The matcha scone with matcha cream is double the green tea delight, mild and mellowly aromatic, turned into the perfect teatime treat with mascarpone and fresh strawberries, while the buttermilk scone with a chunky slab of butter is richer and heavier, balanced with red bean paste for Japanese adzuki sweetness.

Neutrals TTDI
30A, Persiaran Zaaba, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. Open Thursday-Tuesday, 830am-5pm.

Fēst, Taman Tun Dr Ismail

FÄ“st is back: This purveyor of chicken waffles and coffee first ran for two years in Jaya One beginning in 2016, then moved to Damansara Perdana with its Malaysian soul-food sister restaurant Grain in 2018 before taking a hiatus in late 2019.

Now, Fēst's chef-founder Jia Yuan is making a fresh start in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, with this hidden space tucked on the top floor of a three-level shop-house, calmly overlooking the neighbourhood, currently open for takeouts of unique twists on familiar favourites.

We've been fans for five years of FÄ“st's chicken waffles (RM16) - the minced chicken IS the waffle, grilled in a griddle-plate waffle maker, tasting like a tender chicken patty but looking like a (low-carb) waffle, lively with chives, sweetly punchy raisins, romaine, fried shallots, pickled onions and tangy sriracha mayo for extra heat. You might recall these chicken waffles formerly in FÄ“st's Lemak Chicken Sandwiches, stuffed in sourdough toast - let's hope that also makes a return in the future.

When we visited Grain three years ago, the Duck Porridge was a highlight, so we're happy to have it here too (RM16), a Teochew-influenced rendition of rice cooked in a light duck broth, a princely portion of thick, creamy-chewy congee, comfortingly blanketed with roast duck breast, crullers, leeks, raisins and romaine for salty and sugary notes with plenty of textural nuance, travelling well for takeouts.

Someday, weeks or months from now, caffeine lovers from TTDI and beyond will climb two flights of stairs and cram into FÄ“st for their fix of flat whites (RM10). For now, patrons seeking a pleasant cup to sip on the move can find Jia Yuan making double-ristretto Magic (RM12) out of Ghostbird Coffee's Aurora medium-roast with currents of milk chocolate, hard-hittingly strong enough to keep us buzzing till sunset.

Degustation TTDI: 2021 menu, from fresh fish head curry to flavourful beef burgers

Could TTDI's most soulfully satisfying fish head curry be found in a friendly restobar? Steered by a former international trade specialist and a human resources professional, Degustation has reliably fed the neighbourhood for nearly two years, stamping its own scrumptious mark on everything from beef and pork steaks to pan-seared scallops and roasted spring chicken.

This is a place with a personal touch - one of its signatures of tiger prawns steamed with white wine is even named for a loyal patron who requested this recipe. Degustation's Capt. Swadesh Bose leads the restaurant with a warm sense of hospitality, while co-founder Geetha Vellu has been passionate about cooking ever since she stood beside her mother by the stove as a teenager to learn how to prepare their household favourites.

Even the Fish Head Curry (RM75; suitable for two to three persons, complete with rice and pickled acar) on its own is worth the visit to Degustation.

This hearty claypot special is a tribute to Geetha's late mother who first taught her to prepare this, especially on Sundays when everyone in the family was at home for a meal together. “Every time I make this fish head curry, it’s with love - something to remember her by," Geetha tells us.

It's an impressive family-recipe rendition of a familiar staple, elevated through Degustation's own specially ground spice mix, with aromatic hints of cumin, star anise and asam jawa in lovely proportions.

No coconut milk is blended in the curry, which means the freshness of the fish and the spices stand out with pronounced potency.

The fish is red snapper hand-picked from Taman Tun's wet market in the morning, ensuring the best possible quality. Each chunky head weighs 1.3 to 1.5 kilograms, cooked to order with tofu, tomatoes, okra and eggplant - it takes 40 minutes to make, so it's best to preorder this.

We love how the fish tastes impeccably fresh, with a clean, pure flavour and firm, magnificently meaty texture. The curry is rich and robust but not cloying, a cookbook-perfect representative of fish head curry.

If you love a fisherman's full catch, the Seafood Platter (RM80; also for two to three persons) is another enjoyable order, brimming with tiger prawns, mussels, calamari rings, dory fillets and soft-shell crab. This princely platter makes for fun munching, particularly the large, fleshy prawns with their crunchy batter.

Even the accompaniments of Thai sweet chilli sauce and tartar sauce are house-made, tasting more nuanced than store-bought versions. It's no wonder that Degustation is well-regarded for group events, with chef Geetha most recently whipping up a feast for a gathering of three dozen people.

Degustation strives to add distinctive flourishes to all its dishes - the Australian lamb cutlets (RM45) are succulent to the chew, pan-fried to the ideal medium doneness, but what makes them thoughtfully memorable are the chickpea puree, crispy butternut squash fritters, mint jelly and red wine jus that round out the plate, each bringing a delicious element to the ensemble.

More gnaw-worthy meat: Degustation is ultimately a hangout for casual, fuss-free meals that you can chomp on with your fingers if you want to, illustrated by the honey soy-glazed pork ribs (RM35), decadently slicked up and delectably saucy, with the pork also purchased from the market to uphold a consistency of quality, complete with steak fries to combat both carnivorous and carb cravings.

Every other restaurant might offer beef burgers, but Degustation's stands out with its own identity (RM25), courtesy of its own-minced patty that's juicier than the norm, with a genuinely meaty taste and texture, topped with a nicely runny fried egg. Onion rings, a side salad and chilli mayo (also house-made, of course) make this a burger platter that merits its full price.

Come for the food, stay for the drinks: The house cocktail is the GV Special (RM35), named for Geetha because she loves it, a spiritedly quenching medley of vodka, blue curacao, Sprite and orange juice.

The bar's lively repertoire ranges from classic cocktails to contemporary cocktails, from the Tequila Sunrise (RM30) to the Mint Royal (RM17). All in all, it's encouraging to see Degustation evolve since our first visit here in mid-2019 - we hope to continue seeing this venue be a fixture in TTDI's F&B landscape for years to come.
