Summer Sweet Time

Summer Sweet Time promises the pleasures of Persian-beloved cakes and cream puffs, channelling the charm of an Iranian bakery for all seasons.

The Napoleon Cakes are irresistible - fresh, thin layers of puff pastry, beautifully flaky to the bite, soaked and smothered with whipped cream frosting for mouthwatering layers of crispness and moistness. If you're storing them, these taste even more indulgent a day later, when the pastry soaks up the cream. Available in Original (RM35 for eight pieces), Chocolate (RM40 for eight), or both (RM38 for eight).

The cream puffs are a dream too, with crunchy choux yielding to a full-bodied creamy centre, lovingly home-baked. The classic clocks in at RM32 for 16 pieces; chocolate is RM48 for 16; a mix is RM40.

A sampler box comprising Napoleon cakes, cream puffs, and Latifeh soft cookies is available for RM75.

MMG Patisserie, Sri Petaling

If the pastry cream is your favourite component of choux au craquelin, check out MMG Patisserie's plumply stuffed puffs, which come in distinctive Asian tea-flavoured varieties - Japanese hojicha, Chinese Pu'er, Thai milk tea and Malaysian teh tarik (RM8.80 each). Crackly and crunchy to the bite, rich and luscious to the chew, with all the aroma you'd crave from each flavour.

Also worth sampling from MMG (which stands for Mama Girl Baking): A Malaysian take on Medovik, a lightly honeyed layer cake of caramelised crispness, perfect for a teatime treat, a playful change from cheesecakes and chocolate cakes.

Greater Action Baking: Support refugee communities by buying cookies & brownies

Baked goods for a great cause: Run by the Greater Action NGO that works with refugees in Malaysia, Greater Action Baking offers cookies and brownies baked by an Afghan female refugee team, with all proceeds channelled into supporting their livelihoods, helping them pay for rent, groceries and education.

Check out the Gingerbread Cookies, with a fresh, tenderly crumbly chew and fragrant, perfectly spiced sweetness that's not overly sugary (RM15 for a box of six; RM25 for a box of 10), and the Triple Chocolate Brownies, indulgently fudgy-cakey with white chocolate flourishes (RM30 for a box of six; RM50 for a box of 10).

Maclyn, Sri Petaling

From Baileys-infused burnt cheesecake to whisky-laced Musang King ice cream, Maclyn offers marvellous twists to crowd-pleasing treats.

The Irish cream liqueur is mellow but unmistakable in the cake's cheese batter and cremeaux, layered with cocoa sponge for sumptuous forkfuls of spiked creaminess (RM18 per slice).

The ice cream is intriguingly inviting too - the first spoonful breaks through a surface of crunchy-buttery Sable Breton cookie crust, plunging into smooth ice cream that tastes aromatically all durian initially, with nuances of single malt whisky revealing themselves midway in the mouth (RM45).

Sucrose Desserts, Imbi

If you love luscious desserts, Sucrose's fab four temptations will be irresistible, creamy and dreamy, named cryptically for four women - Eva, Audrey, Liu Ying and Josephine.

It's challenging to choose a favourite, but Eva certainly wins our heart - a chocolate Paris-Brest layered with hazelnut cream and hazelnut praline, decadently rich but not cloying, sumptuous and scrumptious.

Audrey is like a cheesecake, elevated - densely soft and smooth chilled cheese mousse with baked cheese on a crumbly-crunchy McVities Digestive base.

Liu Ying is aromatic with apples, a caramelised apple cinnamon tatin nectarously encased in a panna cotta donut, a terrific testament to Sucrose pastry chef CK's talents.

Josephine is peanut mousse with choco sponge and a feuilletine base, indulgently fluffy-nutty, like Snickers on steroids. Sucrose's desserts cost a relatively high RM35 for two, but its confident use of top-notch ingredients makes each worthwhile.

Note: Sucrose is essentially a dessert kitchen and counter in a striking set-up on the doorstep of Imbi's Curee cafe.
