Calowries Burger, Petaling Jaya

Calowries is worth the calories: PJ's new burgers-for-delivery joint offers not only full-portioned burgers but slider-sized ones too. Customers can savour a taster box of two mini burgers for only RM18.90 - the Braised Beef Burger is bursting with beautifully succulent chunks of unprocessed meat, like a bowl of stew in a burger, while the Classic Beef Burger promises a pleasurable patty that's thickly house-made, tender and tastes like real, honest-to-goodness meat.

Calowries does justice to fried chicken sandwiches too, with battered thigh that remains satisfyingly crunchy and juicy after a half-hour delivery, warmly gooey with melted cheese and mayo, crisp with cucumbers and lettuce (RM16.90). We appreciate how Calowries doesn't compel customers to order a margins-padding set with fries and an unwanted soft drink, but it's worth adding on RM3.90 for the PGR (paprika, garlic and rosemary) fries.

Calowries Burger

Delivers Monday-Saturday, 10am-8pm, from Millennium Square, Section 14, Petaling Jaya.

Butter Burgers, Bandar Sunway

Butter Burgers boasts several intriguing choices for delivery - the Frita Cubana Cheeseburger layers a quarter-pound beef patty with piri-piri spiced fries and jalapeƱo for a fiery kick (RM21.90, with fries), while the Greek Lamb Cheeseburger tops a tender, chunky lamb patty with feta cheese, garlic aioli and mustard mayo for extra-punchy flavours (RM17.90). But we'd skip the Swiss Onion Truffle Chicken Burger - the buttermilk-brined breast fillet with caramelised onions is fine, but our order came without its promised Swiss cheese and black truffle sprinkles, leaving it a generic chicken sandwich (RM23.90).

Zikgu, Sri Petaling

Who needs French fries when you can have fried chicken skin to pair with your burger?

Sri Petaling's new chicken sandwich truck is a diabolical diet-destroyer, cramming in all the crunch you could crave from fried chicken.

The chicken burger is a behemoth, with chunky thigh meat in flavourfully savoury-spicy batter, packed with cheese sauce, lettuce and tomatoes in a hefty, well-proportioned bun (RM12.50).

Order with a substantial side of chicken skin, served crisp, hot and fresh-tasting (RM3.90).

Baby Burger Cafe, Taman Persiaran Desa

Baby Burger Cafe's house-made patties, thick and tender-textured, form a fun foundation for the Thai O'le Chicken ((RM15.90; with a super-spicy patty infused with lemongrass, basil and cilantro) and Vege From My Head Tomatoes (RM13.90; crafted with pure chickpeas). These fuss-free burgers aren't for babies, and neither are the craft beers - the cafe, tucked on a back-alley in a mainly residential neighbourhood, offers a solid selection.

Baby Burger Cafe
11-2, Persiaran Syed Putra 3, Taman Persiaran Desa, 50460 Kuala Lumpur. Open Tues-Sun, 12pm-10pm.

Ohsombrgr

Fans of burgers with premium meat can ogle at Ohsombrgr's Wagyu-tang (RM25), boasting an Aussie grain-fed Sanchoku Wagyu beef patty. The spotlight is on the patty's pure succulence, in a burger that's kept fairly plain and straightforward with caramelised onions and subtle layers of guacamole and unagi sauce.

If you're keeping your burger budget below RM20, The Dian might be your destiny, its cheddar-melting ground chicken patty splashed with super-savoury Indonesian-inspired balado sauce (RM15).

Just Sear, Pandan Indan

Just Sear's Wagyu Burger meets the meaty mark with a thick, 150-gram patty that's billed as 100% pure wagyu beef, with a pleasant char and pleasurable chew, bolstered by tangy mustard, pickled jalapeƱos, lettuce, cheddar and mayo (RM35). Not a bad cheeseburger, with clean-tasting beef that crushes carnivorous cravings.

The sear isn't just about hooves and horns - feathered fowl is respectably represented by hearty Chicken Thigh Burgers. The meat may be a bit drier than expected, but for the price, this is a perfectly reasonable chicken-sandwich meal (two for RM27.50)

Just Sear's burgers are available for delivery from Pandan Indah.

Gokil Burger, Kampung Baru

Gokil Burger might be based in Kampung Baru, but its creations take their names from across the city, with choices spanning Burger Cochrane to Burger Chow Kit, Burger BB to Burger TAR.

The two hearty heavyweights are Burger Hartamas and Burger Bangsar. Burger Hartamas boasts a house-made beef patty topped with beef bacon, mac-and-cheese, pickles and caramelised onions (RM18), while Burger Bangsar is the ultimate behemoth, layered with both a beef patty and boneless battered chicken leg, slathered with a spicy sauce and a sunny-side-up (a spectacular steal for RM14; the one to choose if you crave a burger that showcases both beef and chicken). Satisfying stuff.

Cali's Burger, Bandar Sri Damansara

On a cold, rainy December night, scores of burger buffs huddled under umbrellas beside the Klang Valley's latest burger truck - our burgers were probably a bit wetter, sloppier and messier than usual, but no one seemed to mind, since the Cali's team was doing its best to dish out delicious burgers.

Cali's serves three types of burgers - the Chicken Katsu (with a deep-fried chicken patty, garlic mayo, cheddar, pickles and tomatoes), Beef Burger (with an Australian grain-fed beef patty, cheddar, pickles, tomatoes and onion jam) and Tamago (with a Japanese omelette, nori, house-made mayo, pickles, coleslaw and onions).

Our burgers might not be representative of the typical Cali's experience, since the team served complimentary tamago top-ups with each burger that night. The chicken and beef patties were moist and meaty in the manner of Malaysian street burgers, while the tamago was satisfying even on its own, thick and tender, fresh and warm, sandwiched in a fluffy-soft, buttery bun.

December Hairy Boys: DHB Central

This TTDI-based truck tackles bread-meat pairings with punchy flavours, from buffalo burgers to cheesesteak-style sandwiches.

The OSB burger features a house-made buffalo meat patty that's thick and tender, albeit a bit gamy - plenty of protein packed in between the bun with American cheese, raw onions, ketchup and a secret sauce (RM12).

The Malaya Cheesesteak is even heartier, more sandwich than most of us can handle, with thin-sliced rib-eye generously stuffed in a soft roll, spilling out with so much oozy cheese whiz, caramelised onions and capsicum for the guiltiest sort of grub (RM18).

DHB Central (DHB stands for December Hairy Boys) is regularly parked at Rasta TTDI.
