With a history that dates back eight decades, Ye Olde Smokehouse has been Fraser's Hill's most atmospheric venue since 1937 for a colonial English-evoking meal of warming soups, roast chicken and sherry trifle, roughly a two-hour drive from KL.

Aida Daniya Tea House @ Fraser's Hill
Aida Daniya's setting might be its undeniable attraction, perched on a scenic slope of Fraser's Hill. But its food passes muster too, with hearty fare like fried chicken with chips and cream sauce for lunch, and the obligatory scones, cakes and pies for tea.

Pinto Coffee & Purple Cane @ Janda Baik
Hardly an hour's drive from KL, Pinto Coffee provides an easy escape from the city, serving Mie Aceh with crab (RM15.50), Nasi Goreng Telur (RM10) & everything from buttermilk pancakes to buffalo wings to baked lasagne, plus Cendol Soya Cincau (RM6.50) & avocado ice-blended coffee (RM12), in a calm, back-to-the-kampung space where nature's sounds fill the air. The food & drinks taste wholesome, helping to make Pinto a pleasant place for lingering. Bring a book or browse the outlet's selection, & note that reaching Pinto requires driving up a pebbly slope, parking by the jungle & strolling uphill for a minute.
Also in this area, Purple Cane is equally worth a visit, with verdant, wide-open surroundings to complement a selection of lei cha, black tea curry chicken & oolong tea boiled vegetables. We enjoyed sitting in this wood-dominated restaurant & leisurely having Kindori vanilla ice cream cake (RM9.90) with lemon celery green tea (RM9.90) & carrot-orange-apple juice (RM12.90).
