Rosie & Ortolana @ Auckland

One of our favourite brunches in Auckland: An offal sausage constructed of lamb liver, black pudding & kidney, with beetroot vinegar & white beans; alongside smoked minced fish balls with a pullet egg yolk & tomato green chilli chutney. Inventive fare, with pleasing flavours & perfectly executed textures. A terrific cafe in the tony Parnell suburb.

Orchard-to-table dining takes centre stage at this chic brasserie beneath a glass canopy; think burrata cheese with squash & currant sofrito, or figs with anchoiade & walnuts. The cocktails too showcase evidence of garden work - prosecco with winter flowers & cassis, or vodka with feijoa, lime & mint.

The Raw Kitchen, Scratch Bakers & Best Ugly Bagels @ Auckland

A strawberry chia pudding & 'black lemonade' (made with cold-pressed lemon juice, activated charcoal & naturally alkaline water), while pausing to ponder in the peaceful courtyard of The Raw Kitchen, nestled in a discreet back-lane of Auckland.

Stopping for a snack with Scratch Bakers' deservedly revered pork belly pie, as close to perfect as a fresh, flaky pie might be.

Lingering over Best Ugly Bagels' beautifully crisp bagels, smeared with a house-made chocolate hazelnut spread (other options include Zany Zeus organic cream cheese, Te Horo raspberry jam or Marsh's Central Otago clover honey, NZ$5 each).
