BRUNO MATTEI's best post 2000 film finally getting a release Stateside

Cover for the upcoming reg. 1 DVD
Bruno Mattei's THE JAIL: A WOMAN'S HELL is finally getting a DVD release in the US. Needless to say, regular readers of this blog know the film was released on a spiffy English friendly DVD in the Czech Republic quite a few years ago (and it was a pain to order thru a Czech language website lemme tell you!! Haha). There's a Japanese release as well. But in any case, I'm certainly happy Mattei's cool film is finally getting released to a wider audience. The label is Intervision Picture Corp which also released Mattei's two post 2000 cannibal films and his two post 2000 zombie films.

Cover for the old Czech DVD

In my opinion THE JAIL is the best film of the lot! In fact it has everything, torture, gore, nudity, girls. It is everything, WIP film, jungle film, cannibal film, gore movie. It's an Italian film but mind you it's a Filipino exploitationer as well (it was filmed entirely in the Philippines)!

By this stage Yvette Yzon had become somewhat of a Bruno Mattei regular in lead roles and she's in this one as well. Also Filipino film regulars Mike Monty and Jim Gaines are in this as well (Monty in a blink-and-you'll-miss him role. He looked ill and passed away shortly after the film was made). According to Intervision's facebook page they've done a brand new interview with Yvette Yzon for the DVD.

I uploaded this old Yvette Yzon interview five years ago but it's still pretty cool. My old channel also has a Bruno Mattei interview from the same set but it's in Italian only.

Mattei's FILIPINO CANNIBALS come to reg. 1 dvd

Ahh, we are squatting in exciting times - at least in regards to new releases of foreign films shot in the Philippines!

There's no less than five cool Filipino films on dvd (and one blu-ray) from Vinegar Syndrome, and Severin/Intervision has just released Bruno Mattei's two post 2000 cannibal movies, LAND OF DEATH and CANNIBAL WORLD, on reg. 1 DVD in the US.

The new DVDs are retitled In The Land of the Cannibals and Mondo Cannibal. They've previously been out on DVD and VHS in Japan (check my old post and see way cooler Japanese covers here).

Check Steven Ruskin's review and DVD info on AVMANIACS here. And yeah, I'll agree with Steve on the films. They're not great by anybody's standards but if you like your entertainment trashy you know what you'll get with these two films, entertaining trash. I do however think Bruno's two post 2000 zombie films and THE JAIL: A WOMAN'S PRISON are way better (they were shot in the 'Pines as well).

Bruno Mattei's last cannibals on vhs

Bruno Mattei's two last cannibal movies (that are among his much neglected post 2000 movies) were LAND OF DEATH (2003) and CANNIBAL WORLD (2004) were probably the last of his films to come out on video tape. And only in Japan! His later film, including THE JAIL: A WOMAN'S HELL, ZOMBIES: THE BEGINNING, THE TOMB, and ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD didn't make it to VHS as far as I'm informed (and neither did his post 2000 soft-porn films but I don't know much about those). Feel free to correct me but I've certainly never seen any video releases of any of those films. His last film was ZOMBIES: THE BEGINNING from 2007. A third film in the series was planned by sadly Mattei passed away before it was made. So sad. We could have had yet another masterpiece by this true il Maistro di italieno horror film. ^_^

I already had the two films on DVD (one on official Japanese dvd and the other on American bootleg from Pan-something off the Japanese dvd). But when I saw the other vhs versions from a seller in downtown Japan I knew I had to have them. Yay! Both tapes are ex-rentals and both carry English dubbing with Japanese subs. You'll notice there's a plastic box with the tapes in them inside the case itself. This is something I believe only existed in Japan and was a way for rental shops to be able to on one hand quickly get the tape out of the case and at the same time let the customer rent the tape in the plastic box while the case (and the cover) stayed in the shop. This way other customers could see and (I would assume) pro-order renting the tape once the first customer delivered it back.

If you look at the covers you'll notice the two films were marketed at sequels to CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, the Japanese titles carry sequel numbers 2 and 3 and the Japanese title itself is the same as for CH. Also the English (i.e. English in Japan) titles were changed to resemple sequels; LAND OF DEATH became "Cannibal Holocaust: Cannibal vs. Commando" while CANNIBAL WORLD became "Cannibal Holocaust: The Beginning" (notice: the Japanese titles include the sequel numbers but the English titles don't). Bruno Mattei's two late cannibal films are fun on a very trashy level but there's no way in hell that they compare to Ruggero Deodato's masterpiece from 1980.

All hail our king

Gee whiz! During my five year mission thru Cyberspace I've just stumbled over a Bruno Mattei fan site, THE HELL OF BRUNO MATTEI. Another fellow Mattei worshipper!! I have no idea if the site is any good but here is a link anyway. And I don't know if it's still being updated (or who's behind it). The front page was last updated in 2006 but there might be newer reviews.

Screen grabs from the Czech CANNIBALS: LEGEND OR REALITY dvd

Woo-hoo! I've just got an email from the nice people at the Czech store where I ordered the film saying they've shipped it now. Fantastic!! I was afraid they might not have it in stock. When I ordered the last DVD (Mattei's The Jail) from (another) Czech shop it took two months before I got it because they had to back order it from the publisher (funnily enough their website didn't mention any of this when I placed the order!). Well, this is certainly cool news.

I found some screen grabs on a Czech film site and I'm posting all of them here + credits info. You'll find the original page (with a long plot description in Czech) here.

Bruno Mattei's CANNIBALS: LEGEND OR REALITY (2008)

Original title: CANNIBALI: LEGGENDA O REALTÁ

BLOODY HELL!!!

I've been wanting the "lost" Bruno Mattei cannibal movie CANNIBALS: LEGEND OR REAITY (Cannibali: Leggenda o Realtà) for many months now. It's among the last "new" films he made towards the end of his life (unter the alias "David Hunt"). It's really a 4 episode made-for-tv thingy but only released as an edited film version on DVD. And only in ONE country: the good ol'e Czech Republic! It's a pest ordering DVDs from there. But last night... finally... my buddy Member-X from Cinehound found a store for me that has the DVD and accepts non-Czech customers. And they even take PayPal! So this afternoon I place the order. And then I surf on some German site and discover that...

EDIT: and in the text that followed I wrote about how I thought there was going to be a reg. 1 dvd release but unfortunately I confused it with the release of another, entirely different movie. I've decided to delete the text in order not to confuse fans even more.

Oh, and I just discovered there's a new Claudio Fragasso film as well (from 2010)!!

EDIT, December 2011: There's was some confusion around the time when a reg. 1 DVD that was called THE REAL CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST was going to get released and unfortunately I thought it was an aka title for the Mattei film. It is not. It's a completely different mondo movie called GUINEA AMA (by Akira Ide). As a wild coincidence Bruno Mattei actually used some of the mondo footage from GUINEA AMA in his HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD! How's that for weirdness!!

A pile of steaming... entertainment.

I remember the very first issue I ever read of Métal Hurlant (Heavy Metal in English and Total Metal in Denmark) and there was a story about this guy who discovers a living, breathing pile of garbage in his basement. It's just lying there not moving but when the unfortunate sap flicks a booger into the pile of shit that last added bit is enough to create enough energy for the pile to kill the man and proceed to take over the world. Or something. (I read it bloody 30 yrs ago, my memory is faint here!). Anyway, I wonder how much more trash it's gonna take before the garbage blob that is yours truly will start killing random pedestrians and attack the world! If that's the intentions I'm certainly doing something right here cos I just ordered Bruno Mattei's LIBIDO MANIA and the Shaw Brothers' VIRGINS OF THE SEVEN SEAS!!! And, uh, they weren't cheap either. :-(
60 euros!! Mein gott, I could have bought a new car in the Czech Republic for that kinda money!!

Both films are uncut and they're released (for the first anywhere on DVD) by the German label Camera Obscura and I'm getting them from OMG Entertainment in Holland. The German title for VIRGINS OF THE SEVEN SEAS is Karate, Küsse, blonde Katzen and some international sites omit the German umlaut (i.e. dots over the U), thus making it "Karate, Kusse, blonde Katzen" which is somewhat funny... well, if you're Danish anyway. LOL.

The movie itself is one scene of depravity after another. There's rampant misogyny, beatings, degradation, lesbianism (If Helen Ko's character counts), rape and other scenes of moral debasement. With the frequent pratfall humor, you'd think this air of buffoonery would override the roughhouse nature of the proceedings, but it only adds to the overall tastelessness.
From Cool Ass Cinema, read the full review here.

About LIBIDO MANIA:
[...]...it's still perverse enough that you'd never want any family members to see this lying around on a coffee table.

Another World Entertainment to release exclusive BRUNO MATTEI booklet by fave cult writer!

From Reuters (Saturday):

STOP PRESS: STOP PRESS: STOP PRESS:

News in this morning confirm speculations that DVD & blu-ray publisher Another World Entertainment (Denmark) have signed a deal with renowned underground cult personality Jack J of "En Lejemorder Ser Tilbage" blog and "Stay Sick!" fanzine fame for an extraordinary release entitled "Hell of the Living Dead Booklet". A release critics quickly have labeled "Most likely the most important release of 2010".

Another World Entertainment (AWE) will shortly be releasing the Jack J penned mammoth coffee table booklet on Italian master film director Bruno Mattei; a director who is widely recognised by film aficionados and academics alike for his cinematic classics such as SS GIRLS, THE OTHER HELL, ZOMBI 3, HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD and not least his ground breaking masterpiece CRUEL JAWS.

It seems surreal that no major reference book has been published previously but according to AWE part owner and founder, mr Jan Schmidt, the answer is most likely that only few film critics would have dared to put themselves on the line; As mr. Schmidt puts it: "One wrong word about Bruno Mattei and you would have an angry mob on your hands. Thousands of furious Mattei fans ready to tar and feather you."

To the question why he and AWE would risk their necks with this release:

Mr Schmidt: "Well, we knew very well mr Jensen [aka Jack J, Reuters] could pull this off in a grand way. In fact we are convinced he's the ONLY writer who could do this."

A limited edition of the booklet will contain one of maestro Mattei's films; HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD. We asked mr Schmidt why they have chosen to include a DVD with mr J's awesome booklet.

Mr Schmidt: "Well, it's not that we didn't think people would pay $20 for a four page booklet. We are confident most fans would, it's written by Jack J for Christ's sakes! But we just thought it was something the fans would appreciate".

Will you be working with mr J again?

Mr Schmidt: "Haha, you don't throw away a golden goose, now do you! We certainly hope mr J would wish to work with us again. Why would we want to work with anybody else! We've previously tried other writers and they all fall flat in comparison".

Some alleged rumours hint that mr J likes to take his time with his material?

Mr Schmidt: "That may be, but it's certainly not something we view as a problem. We fully understand that different rules apply when you're dealing with an acclaimed underground writer like mr J. We just hope he'll work with us again."

HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD is in stores this coming week.

You're talking bollox, Thomas!

Ahh, good ol'e Thomas Weisser is at it again. Anybody remember the messed up info in Thomas Weisser's Asian Trash/Cult Cinema books? Obviously, none of us are perfect but the same bloody (and often obvious!) mistakes got carried along all the way to the latest third volume!!! Uhh, and of course I can't forget the stories my friend Nils Markvardsen told me about how Weisser had reviewed films in his spaghetti western book; films that never got made! Haha. Nils told me Weisser had written reviews based on early synopsis of films that had been planned for filming but which never actually got made!! LMAO.

I've just received the latest newsletter from his Asian Cult Cinema store and in it he writes about Bruno Mattei in order to promote that he's now selling CANNIBAL WORLD (2003). On his store page he claims that the DVD is a "A Japanese release" but funnily enough the DVD cover has the odd title "Cannibal Holocaust 2" plastered all over the Japanese title!

Lissen, Thomas, mate, If you're selling a bootleg just call it a bootleg, alright.

The film's original English title is of course CANNIBAL WORLD and the English language title on the Japanese DVD is "Cannibal Holocaust The Beginning". I believe the Japanese language title (written in Japanese characters) may very well be the same as their title for CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST but it's just adding to the confusing title HELL of alternative titles when Weisser chooses to use a title that was also used for CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2: THE CATHERINE MILES STORY.

Also, it's pure baloney when he states CANNIBAL WORLD is a sequel to CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. No, it isn't. The Japanese sequel number 2 (plus his own fake number 2) doesn't make it an official sequel. If anything it's a REMAKE of Deodato's film.

For the DVD at the Asian Cult Cinema store go here.

From the ACC newsletter by Weisser:

Allow me to switch gears to World Cult Cinema.
I’d like to talk a bit about Bruno Mattei. Here is a filmmaker who worked behind more pseudonyms than any other director in the world. Between 1970 and 2007, he made 54 movies under 21 different names. For most fans of Euro exploitation, he will best be remembered as "Vincent Dawn," an alias he first used for HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD [aka NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES] in 1980.
Cannibal Holocaust 2 Born in 1931, Bruno Mattei grew up in Rome. He began his career as a film editor for his father’s small production house in the late fifties. As he grew more accomplished, Mattei began working with many European directors. By the late '60s, he was recognized as an "editor extraordinaire," responsible for the finishing touches on over 100 different movies. In 1970, he found himself in Spain working on COUNT DRACULA for director Jesus Franco. It was Franco who convinced Mattei to try a hand at film directing. The result was a torrid sex drama called "Armida" (1970).
During his 40 years of filmmaking, Mattei dabbled in every facet of Cult Film. He made Nazi atrocity movies (PRIVATE HOUSE OF THE SS, under the name Jordan B Matthews), nunsploitation (THE OTHER HELL as Stefan Oblowsky), and an array of Spaghetti Westerns, Women-in-Prison actioners, Sex Films, Sword-n-Sandal flicks, Monster Movies and even a Jaws rip-off (called "Cruel Jaws" under the William Snyder moniker).
In the mid-2000s, Bruno Mattei decided to revisit a peculiar Italian cult phenomenon known as the Cannibal Movie (originally popularized by Ruggerio Deodato with his masterpiece CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, 1979). Mattei directed, wrote and edited the sequel CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2 in 2005, released under the Vincent Dawn pseudonym. Sadly, this would be among his final motion pictures.
Bruno Mattei In early 2007, his health began declining rapidly; Bruno Mattei was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Despite warnings from hospital specialists, Mattei decided on an operation to have the tumor removed. After surgery, he fell into a coma and died a few days later on May 21, 2007. He was 75.
Bruno Mattei was a radical filmmaker, responsible for many excursions into exploitation, to be seen and appreciated by all fans of extreme cult cinema. If you have not as yet experienced CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2 don’t wait any longer. Click the cover to the right for more information. This was his last film as both editor and director.
It lives. Even in his absence.

The two different covers; on top Thomas Weisser's "Japanese" DVD with fake English title, and below the original Japanese cover. I don't mind buying bootlegs but I get ANNOYED when a seller tells me his American bootleg is a Japanese DVD. .\_/.

Ahm, Bruno Mattei flick not so "unreleased" after all!

Damn, too quick again (that's what SHE said!). The Bruno Mattei film BODY AND SOUL which I described as being unreleased in my post from yesterday turns out to be not so "unreleased" after all, LOL. David Z (of the excellent Tomb It May Concern blog, author of the Filipino/Italo war/action movie book "Tough to Kill", and I believe alround Albert Pyun fan) sent me info (check the comments section to yesterday's post) on this Japanese DVD version from 2003. It's out on the King Records label and retitled DIRTYDOLL.
Cheers Dave.

Judging by the trailer this looks like a soft porn flick. As far as I'm aware it's unreleased on in any home-cinema format and it belongs to that handful of movies that Bruno Mattei shot late in his career in the Philippines. Interestingly enough, it has Yvette Yzon in the main role. She also played the lead in ZOMBIE: THE BEGINNING, ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE JAIL. Actually, I have a feeling that all her film work was for Bruno. According to the crappy IMDb she hasn't made one single movie since Mattei's last movie, ZOMBIE: THE BEGINNING.

Finally!! THE JAIL: IN A WOMAN'S HELL DVD is finally coming home!!!

Yes, my furry friends. I'm finally gonna get Bruno Mattei's THE JAIL! On DVD all the way from the Czech Republic!! xD!!! I ordered it from an online store over there and had to work my way thru the whole ordering hoopla with the ol'e trusted (or not so trusted, whatever) Google translator!! Including postage to Western Europe the price came to a whooping 13 Euros! Yay! Spiffy!!

Mattei on the set of his last zombie movies:

Yvette Yzon interview

I noticed there was no interview anywhere with the famale star of Bruno Mattei's last two zombie movies, ZOMBIES: THE BEGINNING and ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD + THE JAIL (which I haven't got yet, boo-hoo). So I got in contact with the film company and said "Hey, you gotta publish an interview" to which they said "sticka it uppa your assa, bastardo", but when I told them who I am they realised their mistake and said, "Scusi, madre de dios, we are most asha-me-de. Here iz interview". Alright, maybe I'm exaggerating slightly, but I did upload the interview to YouTube, haha. Hmm, and when you watch it it becomes obvious she was dubbed in those movies.

Virus - inferno dei morti viventi on DVD from AWE

Christmas is coming early this year, at least in Scandinavia! In August/September Another World Entertainment will be releasing Bruno Mattei's huge masterpiece Virus - inferno dei morti viventi (1980) aka HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD aka Night of the Zombies! Awesome. The film isn't difficult to get hold of as it's out on a spiffy reg. 1 DVD (which includes an interview with Il Maistro himself) but, regardless, it's pretty cool it's coming out on Scandinavian DVD. One minor detail I'm puzzled about is AWE's way of reasoning; About 18 months ago I spoke to AWE head honcho Jan Schmidt and suggested they put out Bruno Mattei's last two zombie films, ZOMBIE: THE BEGINNING and ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD. I mentioned it would be a scoop as these two films weren't released ANYWHERE in the world. It would have meant a lot of DVDs over the counter to costumers from other countries but the reply I got from AWE was they didn't want to put these two films out as they were probably "too crappy" ("probably" cos AWE didn't actually check them out). And now they're releasing HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD instead!!

HAHAHA. I mean... how is that the better choice??? HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD is just as crappy as the other two (but in a completely entertaining way, of course). The difference is just you can buy HELL anywhere online. Beats me if I understand their reasoning. Oh well, I'm certainly not complaining over finally seeing HELL on Danish DVD and I'll be first in line to scoop up the film (altho I've already got the reg. 1 disc). Thanks to AWE for providing Danish fans with local releases. Even if I don't quite comprehend their reasoning. LOL.

The two cover scans are from Japanese and Turkish VHS.

Bruno Mattei's THE TOMB available. Kinda.

VCD/Thailand/fullscreen/Thai dub/no subs/2 discs

Oh sing thy songs of happiness thee wee ones for today I bring thee words of multo cool info! I've recently discovered there is yet another release of one of Bruno Mattei's last moves! This one is THE TOMB (2004) and it's been released not by our friends in the Česká republika but in Thailand. On video-cd. Dubbed in Thai. Without subtitles. :-(

Boo-hoo!! Why is the world so mean. Oh why oh why (he says while repeatedly spanking himself with a leafless branch). I wrote to Tom, an American in Thailand who runs a DVD store with his wife, Kat, called TK WORLDWIDE. He was nice enough to make a few phone calls and if it wasn't depressing enough that there's only a VCD available then get this: The company had actually planned a DVD as well but they just never got around to putting it out!!! :-(

Tom says there are so many DVD and especially VCD releases EVERY DAY that it's completely impossible to really get a good view of what is actually out there on the Thai market. Well, one thing that isn't out there is a Mattei film called THE TOMB. :/

Having said all of the above I should probably also mention there is actually a reg. 1 release of THE TOMB. It came out several years back and unfortunately I don't have it which is a pain as it seems it's OOP and slightly difficult to find by now.

You can get the VCD from eThaiCD ($7.50 incl. p&p). Go here.

Thanks to Tom for the effort. TK WORLDWIDE has a lot of cool Thai DVDs and I've bought quite a few films from there. Go here.

PS: Sorry about the crappy cover scan. Usually I spit on pixelating cover scans downloaded from the Internet but it was the only one I could find and besides, it kinda fits the crappy release.

Last of the Matteis

Here's a handful of trailers for Bruno Mattei's last four cannibal and zombie films (plus THE TOMB). He did 2 of each and they are equally crappy and/or enjoyable, depending on how low your tolerance level is. Mine is pretty low so obviously I enjoy them heaps, haha, but I'm not gonna try and convince anybody that these films are in any way, shape or form good or even semi good cos, well, they're not. But like I said, enjoyable and entertaining. And a pleasure so guilty that you probably wanna keep the films out of sight if you're having any friends/relatives/anybody come over for a visit, that is if you value your reputation in any way!! xD

I don't have the last movie, THE TOMB. I'm aware there's a reportedly crappy US bootleg DVD out but I'm holding back getting it as I've just discovered there's a VCD release of it in Thailand and I'm trying to find out if there's a DVD as well (the VCD only has Thai audio). If any of you know about this please let me know. Cheers.

LAND OF DEATH aka Cannibal Holocaust: Cannibal Vs Commando

CANNIBAL WORLD aka Cannibal Holocaust: The Beginning

ZOMBIES, THE BEGINNING

ZOMBIES, THE BEGINNING (different trailer)

ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD

ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD (long German trailer)

THE TOMB

- And lastly, here's a Mattei tribute by the guy who is usually The Cinema Snob but this video is actually done out of character (if case you hadn't realised TCS is a character he does, lol). Check it out it's pretty good.

Bruno Mattei is back from the dead!!!

Alright, no he hasn't returned as one of his crappy zombies from ZOMBI 3 or HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD (now THAT would have been quite something!!) but his JAIL: A WOMAN'S HELL (2006) has finally been released on DVD!!! Oh sing thee joyous wee ones oh sing thy hymens of praise. A couple of years back we waited patiently for the release of this last two cannibal movies, LAND OF DEATH + CANNIBAL WORLD, and then we waited patiently for his last two zombie films, ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD and ZOMBIES: THE BEGINNING ...when they finally came out on DVD it was in obscure places like Russia, Japan and the Czech Republic... and now, finally, JAIL has been granted a DVD release in the same obscure place that first released his last zombie flicks, i.e. jolly Republic of all things Czech!!! Yay! Spiffy!! Check out this trailer for the DVD:

[PS: yes, the DVD has English dub!]

And go HERE for the real trailer (unfortunately I can't embed it here!). Now the question is just where to get it from! I did manage to order ISLAND OF DEATH, ZOMBIES: THE BEGINNING and Joe D'amato's DEEP BLOOD (not on DVD anywhere else) from a Czech store but, mein gott, it takes time!!!

PS: I wasn't quite sure where to post this as JAIL (like Mattei's other last films) was indeed filmed in the Philippines and I might as well have posted this on my Filipino blog (and YES that is Mike Monty in the trailer) but since this is more trash than trashy Filipino war I put it here, haha.

ROBOWAR trailer

I've posted a French trailer for Bruno Mattei's (highly entertaining!) PREDATOR rip-off ROBOWAR before but this Japanese one is much better. Check it out!

Friday, June 26, 2009

Alright, it took a while but...

...I've finally found a place to order the spiffy new Italian DVD release of Bruno Mattei's incredible masterpiece CRUEL JAWS (aka Jaws 5). I mentioned the then upcoming DVD here but it's taken a while to find a place to order it from (i.e. to get my shit together, LOL) but I've finally found an eBay store in Italy that carries it. I've just this minute ordered my copy and it came to approximately $23 including postage worldwide. If you haven't read my old post do check it out as I also posted the trailer there.

Finally, while we wait why not watch the Cinema Snob's review of CRUEL JAWS!!

PS: No, he's not for real, it's a piss-take!! But he's pretty convincing and there's always 6 trillion subscribers who believe he really hates these movies, haha.

PS.PS: It's not a telly movie as he states. It was indeed made for cinema release, it just never played much in cinemas simply because hardly any distributors wanted to buy it. LOL.

For the DVD on Italian eBay go here (and no need to worry; it does carries the English dub).
