Original kill scene from KARETECI KIZ - without fake death scream

Someone - whoever they were - added a fake death scream to a certain kill scene in the Turkish revenge film KARETECI KIZ (1974) and it has become one of the funniest scenes on the internet in recent years. It's been out there for so long now that people think this is how the real scene plays out in the film. Well, it's not! This is an upload of the scene with its original audio from the Turkish print. It's still not a great scene by any means. It's still funny as hell. And the actor is still terrible. And the actress (Filiz Akin) still couldn't fight her way out of a paper bag. But ... it's a funky soundtrack and no death scream.

PS: the film was dubbed into English and released as "Karate Girl" on vhs in various territories back in the day.

For a wee bit more info about the film check out this previous post on my other blog.

KARATECILER INSTANDBUL'DA - trailer (international edit)

The trailer for the English dubbed version of KARATECILER INSTANDBUL'DA!! This is the international version which has about 15 minutes of new scenes from Hong Kong. I don't know if they are from another film or were shot especially for the international version. The English title is NINJA KILLER. This version is released on a UK DVD which is available from Amazon UK (it's very cheap, I paid 1 penny for mine!). There are VHS versions all over the place (it's on VHS in Denmark). The German version is the same edit as the Turkish one, i.e. no extra scenes. The entire Turkish version is on YouTube (not subbed). The film stars CUNEYT ARKIN and BOLO YEUNG is also in it (but only in the new footage).

Thanks to Hans-Jørn for uploading the trailer.

Cirkin Dünya - trailer

Here's the cover for the rare Turkish VHS release of the (also) Turkish video nasty CIRKIN DÜNYA. When Miltos of Cinehound forum started selling the film on bootleg DVD he entitled it LAST HOUSE IN ISTANBUL and now this bootleg title is quoted everywhere including the fucken IMDb!! Hahaha. Anyhoo, the film has since then been released on DVD in Germany but unfortunately it only carries the German and Italian dubs. Go figure! Miltos' old bootleg is in Turkish and has English subtitles. Below is the German dubbed trailer. I believe the full version of the subtitled print is on YouTube.

PS: The video isn't mine (I wish!) but comes courtesy of a Cinehound member. :D

HK chicks so bad ass they even spit - and speak foul language in Turkish (part two)

For part one go here.

The people at Customs finally sent me the tapes after I had to send them my invoice. I'm allowed to import goods into Denmark for a measly US$12 and these tapes were $10 each. I would have had to pay both the extra vat PLUS their fee (a whooping 30 dollars!!!). And all for some crappy Turkish tapes which I didn't even need in the first place! I just thought they would be fun to have because I'm a fan of those films. Well, FORTUNATELY the seller had sent me an invoice only for the ONE tape and he hadn't bothered to make a new one for both tapes but instead included the price for tape #2 IN THE POSTAGE FEE, hahahaha. Well, THAT WAS MY LUCK!!! This meant the invoice for the one tape was for $10 (and $21 for the postage!!!) and I got the tapes without problems. LMAO!!!

Oh, and when I opened the parcel I discovered one of the tapes was even a bloody Betamax tape, haha.

PS: And don't ask me why the Customs people didn't go: "Hang on, there's TWO farken tapes here! Where's the bloody payment for the second one!!" I have no idea. But then again they wrote they had a parcel that contained *DVDs*. o_O

Last Warrior / Son Savasci (Turkey, 1982)

I've just finished watching the legendary Turkish action/ninja movie LAST WARRIOR (aka Son Savasci) starring the main pride of Turkish cinema, Cüneyt Arkin. The film was directed by another legend in Turkish cult cinema Cetin Inanc. I'm not gonna bore you with a list of his films, if you're into world-weird cinema you already know and treasure them, but the one title Inanc sure is gonna be remembered for is TURKISH STAR WARS (aka The Man Who Saves the World/Dünyayi Kurtaran Adam) which also stars Arkin and sexy Füsun Ucar who plays his love interest in both films (she's also in the follow up DEATH WARRIOR/Ölüm Savascisi).

This time Arkin is a Turkish cop with a past; He was in the Korean war (which ended in 1953 and LAST WARRIOR is set in the early 80s!!!) where he learnt the skills of a ninja. When the movie begins Arkin gets a phone call from his police chief asking him to go to Germany to help the German polizei who are having trouble with people being bumped off by... a ninja!! (I wonder how Danish or Aussie police would handle such a case?) and Arkin would obviously be the right man to fight the ninja as he knows "the way of the ninja" so to speak. xD

When Arkin gets the call he's on holiday with sexy (very sexy) Füsun Ucar but even tho she looks at him with those sexy (very sexy) Turkish eyes he's adamant, "A cop never be owner of ownself" as he puts it in the crappy subtitles. Once he's arrived over in Deutschland he experiences the carnage left behind by the brutal ninja and with the local police he sets out to put an end to this masterless criminal's reign of terror.

LAST WARRIOR is totally entertaining! There's not ONE dull moment in the entire film and you really don't want to blink because you'll just miss something. I referred to TURKISH STAR WARS earlier in this review and once again Cetin Inanc saves money by stealing left and right from an American film! This time obviously not from the original STAR WARS but from some film with lots of car chases in it! You'll see Cüneyt Arkin throw himself from side to side, frantically turn the steering wheel, and work that gear rod like there's no tomorrow - and then the camera angle jumps to an outside view of the car - or rather how the car looks in the American film, haha. I have no idea which films the scenes are from but, regardless, it adds to the awesomeness of the film that's for sure! :D

EDIT: The stolen scenes are from Paul Bartel's CANNONBALL (1976)!! Thanks to Jayson of "Basement of Ghoulish Decadence" blog for this info.

The DVD I got is from my friends at Ciko in Turkey; They actually asked Cetin Inanc if it were all right to release his films on DVD-R and they got his okay. However, that doesn't change the fact that this has the look and feel of a bootleg; The print is sourced from an old VHS and there's no cover or disc art (apart from the handwritten title, LOL). But in contradiction to earlier bootleg releases this DVD-R is actually subtitled in English (or something that resembles English anyway) and big kudos to Ciko for this! The quality of the print used for the original VHS is alright, I have certainly seen VHS prints that were far worse. There's also a trailer but in contradiction to the film print the trailer looks like it was downloaded from YouTube, in other words it's pretty crappy (and for some reason not subtitled!) but it's cool it's included.

I must admit I've seen enough Turkish and HK Chinese films that weren't English friendly to last me a lifetime and I'm happy to just get ANY kind of English subs. However, having said that, I should point out the subs are not very good TO SAY THE LEAST. They'll give you a fairly good impression of what's being said but to tell you the truth the subs kinda blow in a major way! And trust me, this isn't a question of me making a note of the few times there's a slight spelling error or some bad grammar; This is a question of making a note every time there's a correct sentence!!

Some of my film friends, especially in the US, have commented that the subs are alright but I disagree on this and I think it's partly due to a cultural difference; In the English speaking world films were rarely subtitled in the old days and so native English speakers weren't used to subtitles. But what they were used to was foreigners who spoke broken English. So somehow they just see subtitles in broken English as an extension of this.

In northern Europe on the other hand, all foreign movies have always been subtitled into the local lingo. And the way I see it, the characters in these Turkish films speak perfect Turkish so why would it be okay to have them translated into broken English? They don't speak broken Turkish so OBVIOUSLY the English subs ought to be correct too.

Anyway, forget about the less than perfect subs and get hold of LAST WARRIOR anyway! The DVD is available from Ciko's eBay store "Turkish Cult". Just trust me on this one! Hands down, it is a totally enjoyable piece of trashy Turko celluloid and the film shits all over 99% of EVERYTHING ever made in Denmark!!! Inanc made a sequel two years later, DEATH WARRIOR (aka Ölüm Savascisi), which also stars Cuneyt Arkin and Füsun Ucar.

For Ciko's Turkish Cult shop on eBay go here.

NB.
In regards to the English subtitles: in all fairness I should point out this DVD-R is one of their earlier releases and (reportedly) they put more effort into their translations now as the subs are being checked by a native English speaker.

And finally a girl... and a sniper... and a car... of which none of them knew they were one day going to take part in a Turkish film, LOL:

Karamurat: The Sultan's Warrior (Turkey, 1973)

Ahh, check this German VHS out! It's the Turkish Cüneyt Arkin movie KARA MURAT: FATIHIN FERMANI from 1973, known in English as Karamurat: The Sultan's Warrior. Thanks to Henrik Larsen I already own Mondo Macabro's UK TV print (in Turkish w/English subs) but when I stumbled over this tape on German eBay I knew I had to have it! Now, if just I could find the German dubbed print of KARA MURAT KARA SOVALYE'YE KARSI aka Karamurat Vs. The Black Knight (not released in English) then I'd be happy!! EDIT: My info on the film on this tape is wrong in the above post!!! I got my info from the German film data base OFDb (kinda the German answer to the IMDb) but their info on the English title is incorrect!!! DER HEILIGE KRIEG isn't aka The Sultan's Warrior (Kara Murat: Fatihin fermani) as they state but it's actually KARA MURAT KARA SOVALYE'YE KARSI (aka Kara Murat vs the Black Knight). And since I already have the English dubbed TV print for SULTAN'S WARRIOR I'm not complaining. This is pretty cool.

THE MASKED DEVIL (Maskeli Seytan) (Turkey, 1971)

More psychotronic goodies from the world of Turkish pop cinema! MASKELI SEYTAN (which I assume means The Masked Devil) is from 1971 and directed by Yilmaz Atadeniz (who also did THE DEATHLESS DEVIL (DVD from MM) and SPY SMASHER (from Onar). This one comes courtesy of Ciko. Check out the trailer, it's pretty awesome not least the end where the baddies are attacked by... a MUMMY!! o_O

Super rare Cuneyt Arkin film on super expensive DVD

A little while back Bill Barounis wrote this on his Onar blog:

EW ACQUISITIONS ADVENTURE INFO.

In a previous post I was talking about a mad greedy collector in Ankara who owns 100's of 16mm films, most of them obscure titles that were considered to be LOST.

Some of them are the superhero films RUZGAR HAFIYE, BOMBALA OSKI BOMBALA, KAMCILI KADIN (KINOVA 3) or Cuneyt Arkin's LOST 60's actioner CEHENEMME BIR YOLCU.

Too bad the costs were so gigantic that I decided to buy ONLY the aforementioned 2 titles, RINGO GESTAPO'YA KARSI & that secret LOST KILINK film.

I've just discovered that there's is now a limited DVD release of CEHENEMME BIR YOLCU and there's a seller on German eBay who has it. But this is fucken insane: He is charging 300 dollars for a copy of the DVD!!!

Check the auction page here.

What a bloody shame!!! My Turkish is a bit rusty (haha) but I think it even says it has English subs.

Anybody wanna cough up (and make me a dvd-r)???

Thanks to "Tombei" for info.

Arkin galore!

I got a bunch of Cuneyt Arkin films in the mail today! Yay! They're all on Turkish VCD, all costume adventure films (in the vein of the KARA MURAT series), and none of them are subtitled! But none of these films' story lines are particularily difficult to follow; Their plots are almost as thin as Hanna-Barbera cartoons! Lots of action, beautiful women, and Cuneyt Arkin being, well, Cuneyt Arkin! xD.

Boo-hoo, I didn't get KILL THE BASTARDS... and there's a reason!

COS IT WENT FOR BLOODY 122.50 dollars!!! Fucking hell!!!

"Kill the Bastards" is most likely a title spawned by Miltos of Cinehound forum. The film's Turkish title is CAPKINIM HOVARDAYIM and it's directed by none other than Cetin Inanc! Yes, thee Cetin Inanc who also directed TURKISH STAR WARS, DEATH WARRIOR, TURKISH RAMBO, TURKISH ROCKY, TURKISH JAWS, and tons more.

Miltos had the Turkish VHS release of CAPKINIM HOVARDAYIM up for auction, I placed a fair amount on it but, uhh, after 12 bids it reached 122.50 bucks! Congrats to whoever won it. Sadly not me. :-(

(PS: whoever you are please send me a dvdr. xD.)

TURKISH STRAW DOGS (Kartal Yuvasi) - trailer

KARTAL YUVASI ( TURKISH STRAW DOGS ) Trailer

CIKO MySpace Video

This brutal film looks bloody awesome! (unless you don't like brutal films, obviously). And it's out on DVD-R (legit? Semi-legit? Boot?) from Ciko in Turkey. It's subtitled in English and when you order it you get both the original unsubbed Turkish VCD, a subbed DVD-R, and lobbycards. For the film on their eBay store go Go here. Edit: With most of the DVD-R's from Ciko you get a VCD along with the DVD-R but I've just been informed this isn't the case with this film. No VCD, only a subtitled DVD-R.

Afilli Delikanli (Turkey, 1976)

Amazing! I won Yilmaz Atadeniz' AFILLI DELIKANLI tonight on eBay! Yay! Spiffy! And I was the only bidder too! (maybe cos it's a Betamax but still!).

Yilmaz Atadeniz is the Turkish director who also did THE DEATHLESS DEVIL (aka Yilmayan seytan and on DVD from Mondo Macabro), SPY SMASHER (aka Casus Kiran, on DVD from Onar), KILING ISTANBUL'DA (also from Onar), and many more (Atadeniz is the guy in MM's docu who says "I wish we hadn't used a robot in DEATHLESS DEVIL that was so obviously a man in a robot suit", haha).

Mess with beautiful Byzantine women and they'll give ya HELL!!!

From a Mondo Macabro screening on UK TV of KARAMURAT, THE SULTAN'S WARRIOR. Thanks to Henrik Larsen of Obskuriøst magazine (and initually Graham Rix).
