Ohh Nina!

I'm listening to old records from my collection. Records as in LP's. And old as in I bought them a long time ago! Here's NINA HAGEN's "Nunsexmonkrock" album from 1982. Check out the (my) writing on the back of the record: "Jack 1984"!!! That was 40 years ago! I bet you weren't even born in 1984!

I haven't listened to this LP for a really long time (i.e. not since the 80s!!). And that was silly of me cos it's a fantastic record. I'm rediscovering Nina Hagen these days. I listened to her "Angstlos" and "Universelles Radio" LP's the other day (the latter I bought in a country that doesn't even exist anymore!). She was sooo inventive and alternative. Nothing square about Nina at all. She's also the only East German (that I know of) who was actually kicked O-U-T of East Germany. Usually East Germans had to try and escape and risk getting gunned down while climbing that dreaded Berlin wall. Nina was too wild for the East.

Some of her early records exist in both German and English editions. I think there's only one version of "Nunsexmonkrock". The tracks are in a mix of German and English, and two versions of the album wouldn't make any sense anyway. "My father was a junkie. Wir waren sehr arm. My brother was in the Vietnam war..."
There's a lyric sheet but it's all done in Nina's hand scribbles and slightly hard to read unless you pay attention. But then again, you *should* pay attention to Nina. Incidentally, a great chunk of the lyrics to the opening track isn't listed. Nina gives her more or less direct rendition of the story of Jesus meeting the Devil in the desert. I wonder why it's left out. Maybe she did reckon better to leave it out since the record would be for sale in the States as well and she considered the risk of being deemed blasphemous and have it banned. Who knows. But great record. I have no idea what she's up to these days and I haven't got any of her post 1980s records. My cousin Ronny (who has since disappeared) was a big Nina Hagen fan as well. We shared a big love of Nina Hagen, Toyah and Unknown Gender (obscure band, now completely forgotten). I lent him "Angstlos" and had a hard time getting it back! Haha

I mentioned the intro track to "Nunsexmonkrock". Here it is in all its glory on YouTube:

Too bad I'm not nymodens.

1 DVD i USA.

Holder serien?

Ville Sodom have eksisteret uden Kreator eller Destruction?

A Bava double bill to remember - a quarter of a century ago!

I used to live in the UK in the late 80s/early 90s. Actually, my love of horror films began in the UK, and in early 1990 I went to visit my friend Suzanne Edmonds in London. I'm not sure if I already knew about what was going to be screened on TV that night or if I found out during the visit. I probably knew already, but then again maybe I just brought a blank tape by chance. Or maybe my friend Suzanne had one that she gave me. Who knows. And it's not all that important - what is of much, much, much greater importance is what was on BBC2 that night! A double bill of Mario Bava's THE MASK OF SATAN and LISA AND THE DEVIL! It was introduced by Kim Newman and yours truly was ready at my friend's VCR and said blank tape. And... I just found my old tape!

Needless to say, better versions of the two films are available on DVD and blu-ray now but that broadcast was historical as it was: 1) the very first time THE MASK OF SATAN was screened in its uncut original version in the UK (i.e. not neither the re-edited and re-dubbed American fiasco, nor the British censored version of the American edit). And 2) it was the first time the director's cut of LISA was shown in the UK. The screen grab is not from my tape but one I found online.

Tonight I've uploaded Kim Newman's intros to the two films, and I've watched them a handful of times now. So weird, it's so fresh in my memory and yet... that double bill was 24 years ago!

PS: the title-card screen-grab from THE MASK OF SATAN isn't from my tape but one I found online.

112 times horror and a nude woman dancing in the Devil's flames. Whoo-hoo!!!

I received the complete "Tales of the Unexpected" DVD box set today. The show ran for 9 years on TV in the UK and was based on horror/thriller stories by Roald Dahl. A friend gave me an early box of selected episodes years ago but this is the complete thing. The other set also cut off the intro's if I remember correctly.

I watched the early seasons on local TV in the early 80s and remember them fondly. If you don't remember the show it's the one that starts with a nude woman dancing in flames and every episode had an intro by Roald Dahl.

I'm pretty sure Danish TV didn't run all seasons, probably only the early ones. The Danish title was "Skæbnefortællinger". People here sometimes confuse it with "Ray Bradbury Theater" which ran here as "Tusmørkehistorier" but they're entirely different and besides "Ray Bradbury Theater" was an American production.

The box is usually expensive but I've been sitting out here in the dark waiting for a cheap(ish) one to turn up on eBay. And last week it did. Muhahaha. 19 discs, 112 episodes.

Repo Man (Alex Cox, USA, 1984)

I've just re-watched REPO MAN which I hadn't seen properly for almost 25 years! (I did get hold of a fullscreen VHS dupe from Finland thru tape-trading in the early 90s but I think I only watched it very late one night and I fell asleep half way thru and never re-watched the tape I don't think). Initially, I watched it at an all-nighter at the old Scala Cinema Club in London in the late summer of 1988; If memory serves me well the all-nighter was entitled "Punk all night" and one of the other films was STRAIGHT TO HELL (also by Alex Cox) and I think SID & NANCY was shown too, and a fourth movie which I don't remember at all. Hmmm, no wait a minute... actually I do remember! It was DOGS IN SPACE, haha. I haven't actually re-watched any of those. I went with my friends Michelle G. and John Dodson - a big Aussie bloke who had died three times of drug overdoses and had just got out of a Spanish jail when I met him. The last time I saw him he left the UK in a hurry cos the tax authorities where getting on to him. Who was the last one there? Hmmm, memory is faint here. I think it was a Kiwi girl called Caileen. Haha. Anyway, I got hold of the reg. 1 dvd, the one that dvdcompare.net says is the best release of the film. And I must admit I thought REPO MAN was every bit as WEIRD and WONDERFUL as when I saw it almost 25 years ago. Alex Cox ought to pull his shit together and make some more films!

UK dvd buyers no longer getting fucked in the ass? Think again, puta!!!

No more severe censorship cuts on UK DVDs? Pffft!

One of the telly shows that I watched religiously when it was broadcast in the early 80s was HILL STREET BLUES.

HILL STREET was a cop show that diverted from most of the 1970s cop shows in that it wasn't about only one main character like Kojak or Columbo but it revolved around a whole police precinct. I don't know if HILL STREET BLUES was the first of its kind but I'm sure that at least due to its popularity it paved the way for the many shows of that kind. All the stuff that we see today should get down on their knees and kiss HILL STREET BLUES' dirty feet.

I haven't actually re-watched HILL STREET since it aired here in the 80s. It's was rerun on a different channel in the early 90s but I didn't watch it cos, well, I guess I was watching something else, LOL (probably some splatter movie as it was about the time when I first got into reviewing gore flicks for fanzines).

Anyhoo, the other day I caught an episode of the show on a local channel which I don't usually watch, and you know how it goes I immediately figured "Oh man I gotta get the entire series right now and watch again... right now", haha. I found two different releases on Amazon UK; a local UK five disc release containing the complete season 1, and a reg. 1 set also containing the complete first season but all squeezed down on only three discs.

Needless to say, I figured the five disc release would be better than the three disc one. Well, bad assumption, cabron!! Fortunately, I took some time and read the user comments on Amazon UK and it appears the video company is royally fucking the British HILL STREET fans up the ass cos the episodes are edited editions (i.e. censored!!!) for day time broadcast before the watershed!!! (i.e. 9pm in the UK). Can you believe that!!

And when you investigate a little further it becomes even more surreal as you learn these censored DVD aren't even the result of the evil deeds committed by the BBFC; It's simply the TV station Channel 4 who is to blame. Oh, and you think it can't get any more obscure? Think again! One of the Amazon customers commented that he wrote to C4 and complained about it but they replied it wasn't their fault! [insert sound file of hysteric, insane laughter] So who is to blame? The video company? No can do! C4 put out the DVD set themselves.

And a few customers mentioned they bought previous VHS editions that were uncut. My guess is this is a fucken slip up that C4 just won't face up to. C4 probably thought it would be easier to release their own broadcast versions on DVD than to get the new versions from the US. Too bad for PAL buyers.

Carol Windsor:
I was so pleased to be able to get it on DVD, however, I was disappointed to find out it is the Hill Street for Babies censored version. Series 2 is even worse. The editing looks like a complete hatchet job - extremely obvious with interrupted flow of action.

"But NOW it can't get any worse... right? Wrong! The SAME applies for the UK edition of the second season:

Mr. T Slader:
I gave season two a chance but it was as badly cut as season one. I have old video copies of several season 1 & 2 episodes that are uncut so I know that they have been butchered.

Jon Clark:
After settling down for a serious couch-fest of memories with these DVD's it was quickly apparent something was missing. Scenes weren't making sense. Edits were skipping around. Events were being referenced that the viewer hadn't seen.

I checked the info on the reg. 1 sets and, lo and behold, they're not only fully uncut but the Americans actually put the series on double sided DVDs which means you get the episodes on six sides, not three (but I have no idea if three double sided DVDs are better than five single sided DVDs or not?). And the reg. 1 sets are even a couple pounds cheaper than the UK discs! I ordered them both right away.

Unfortunately, those two season are the only ones that got released. It seems they didn't sell very well (they came out in 2006) and the remaining five seasons were most likely scrapped. As I said, they're being broadcast on a local channel here but, uhhh, trying to tape full seasons is something I left behind with the video days - I taped most of The X-Files and every Millennium episode and Married... With Children, and, and, and... so many TV series! In the end I just gave it all op when video labels began to release all this stuff on DVD. Haha.
