A broad local band compilation from Sydney Australia  in 1981.

Terrible artwork, but full of gems.

SPK ‎– "Angst Pop Live" (German Bootleg) 1983

Weren’t SPK great eh? That Information Overload Unit album was a pinnacle of articulated noise, and a slew of singles and ep's of equal power backed up the promise, then.....they went Disco?! I remember being excited at the prospect of SPK appearing on tea time pop programme “the Tube” in 1984, and was horrified at the horrendous live performance of the “Metal Dance” single.....and what were they wearing? They looked like Depeche Mode, in muscle shirts and shiny black trousers, Australians doing S&M; and the way the female of the group sang “Daaarnce” in that awful south coast of England way always made me cringe! Then they released that utter shite “Machine Age Voodoo” LP, good title but, another one of those “Bluejeans and Moonbeams” moments; when yer credible artist trys to get some dollar in the back bin!!!?

This obscure Bootleg of a Bootleg recording of a live performance in Markthalle, Hamburg (Germany) from 9/11(thats the 11th sept, not the 9th of november!? Mmmmm...spooky eh?) 1983,however, is not so bad.Even the version of 'Metal Daaarnce' isn't too awful. It still has lots of those four to the floor eighties Gay Disco beats, and banks of arpeggiated synth's to drown out the metal percussion. But,this all makes it a bit more palatable to the 'public'; a noise they can 'Daaaarnce' to, instead of misunderstand. And by the sound of the crowd, there's a lot of public there to witness this softer, cuddlier,SPK, and they're German public too!The fatherland of this sweaty gay beat.

There is something to be said for the early eighties fashion to attempt to subvert 'pop'from the inside; but others achieved this 'New Pop' so much more effectively, like The Associates, and others worse, like Scritti Pollitti. So you can't blame them for trying......or can you????......er....Yes! They are only human I suppose?

Various Artists ‎– "The Elephant Table Album" (X Tract ‎– XX 001) 1983

Companion album to "Three Minute Symphony" compiled, again, by Dave Henderson ,late of the now defunct Sounds newspaper.Full of great tracks, even the 400 Blows track is fantastic, i think they went downhill fast after this single.
Its not perfect, (which is perfection?), as The Legendary Pink Dots do only a mildly irritating version of their Syd Barrett fans play with casiotone keyboards and pots'n'pans stuff.....still made me wanna punch somebody though!
We also got a minimal Coil track which is virtually a slow TR808 solo; dare to be minimal!
SPK on the cusp of becoming total Shite, the excellent Lustmord, Portion Control transmuting into their nasty vocals phase(which i'm not too enamoured about).
To sum it all up, it has its faults, but  a classic old school Industrial compilation, and a great starting point for the Industrial virgin to catch the 80's underground In flagrante delicto! (I don't really speak Latin by the way!)

Various Artists - "The Last Supper" (Adventures in Reality ARR007) 1984

Fantastic, faultless Industrial cassette compilation, complete with fanzine, from 1984.Not a duff track on this, and a spectrum zx computer program to boot!......spectrum ZX programs themselves sounded not unlike some of the Drill'n'Bass stuff that appeared in the 90's from acts like Squarepusher and some left-field Aphex Twin.
The weakest tracks come from german group Gorilla Aktiv, but only because they are a carbon copy of early Deutsche Amerikanishe Freundschaft, but that's no bad thing 'cus by 1984 DAF were shite, and Gorilla Aktiv were excellent.
Best Track, probably the Smersh one; a distorted kind of House musick for an insane asylum.
Included with an 'Adventures in Reality' Fanzine, which was based in Coventry, and ran from 1980 to 1984.All these tracks were exclusive, and not to my knowledge released anywhere else!
Pro-printed cassette with j-card in snap case. Packaged together with a 16-page booklet, including a 3-page interview with SPK.

SPK - " Live at the Crypt " (Sterile Records SRC4) 1981

SPK captured live in 1981, in "Information Overload Unit" mode. This is the SPK I prefer, nasty ear lancing noise, that is only equalled by Merzbow today. If your bag is distorted drumming, gut wrenching screaming, brain grinding electronics, and general Industrial Noise, then you won't find better than this.Maybe Whitehouse is a tad more unsettling, but SPK win out on the textures of the noise, and are creatively more diverse.
This is also a slightly better performance than on the previous SPK post, "The Last Attempt at Paradise" from the following year.

Released on Nigel Ayers of Nocturnal Emissions' Sterile Records, the home of many an industrial noise maker in the early 80's.

SPK - " The Last Attempt At Paradise " (Fresh Sounds Inc. FRESH TAPE 103) 1982

Frightening stuff. Classic 'Leichenshrei' era SPK captured Live in Kansas in 1982.
Plenty of electronic throbbing, tribal chanting, searing noise, and industrial percussion(i.e. hitting bits of metal). There were few less compromising acts on the the planet in the early 80's than these jolly chaps. Leading exponents in the Industrial school of doing things, along with Throbbing Gristle, Boyd Rice, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Whitehouse, this was a genuinely new music. Yes, some elements had appeared before 1977, namely Faust had used machines, and battered scrap metal in the early 70's for example, but this was original and challenging, and it was saying something about our misguided way of life and the horrors of the Human Condition.
They took it to the brink, then went Disco???.......admirable in a way, and something I always encourage in these pages; namely,do NOT follow expectations.
Recorded live in Lawrence, KS - April 28 1982.
Some Copies came with 'Primer'- Booklet.
Does not contain a tracklist, but here is the setlist:

A1. Maladia Europa (The European Sickness)
