Carcass – "Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment" (Self-Released ) 1987

Ahhh, some Death Metal from the home of the Beatles(Liverpool for gen Z),which sounds like Helter Skelter fed through a cheap distortion pedal and cement mixer......except this ain't Death Metal is it? It's Grindcore innit?
Chief Grinder, Bill Steer, was in Napalm Death for one album....."Scum" I think. So, the relevance of this post was to make a connection between Carcass and the early disemboweling grind of Napalm Death.
However, Bill Steer, was to leave and missed Napalm stalwart Shane Embury joining, like ships in the night, after leaving Warhammer, whom we featured in the previous post.
Most of the musicians....musicians???....in these groups were interchangeable, so no determinable difference was made, and a smooth transition was easily achievable.
The Thesaurus for this entire genre is but a slim volume, concentrating mainly on technical Autopsy references, and different, but the same, forms of putrefaction. Poetry it ain't,but it does convey rotting meat as some kind of alternative Flower representing the horrific ugliness of humankind....an image best represented by a naked Donald Trump....of you can imagine that without losing your mind?
I did also have a pint with Napalm Death,at Leicester University....of course i asked for an autograph for my children,so I provided a Fag Packet and Mick Harris dutifully wrote "Salamanderrrr Autopsy Doss, from Mick Harris". I sold them on Yahoo auctions (remember them?) as part of a package I made up, with The Napalm Death Peel Sessions CD, which skipped like a fucker.....a bit like this tape!? More fun facts>>> This tape was recorded in 22 minutes, but still managed to sound better than the debut album, "Reek Of Putrefaction.
PS isn't "Die in Pain" actually shorter than " You Suffer"? if you remove the count in on drum sticks?

Anal Cunt – "I Like It When You Die" (Earache Records – MOSH 169 CD) 1997

It had to happen.....an anal Cunt CD from the age when no-one released a vinyl Lp,and no-one was 'woke'. The dark dark days of the late nineties.
Artwork(?), forget about it, lyrics(?), who cared anyway(?),tolerable surface noise, not with compact disc's maaan...scratch the fucker and its dead. However CD's were very good for that Glitch fad from the early noughties,y'know (author stifles yawn) Oval, and other boring fucking clever dicks like that.Either that or using them to make a novelty clock to win favor with a friend or potential lover.
Anal Cunt sounded like completely fucked CD's long before Wire Magazine excitedly discovered Blectum from Blechdom; and Anal Cunt were also funny without stooping to the two twats and a laptop option. This shit was done with the same instruments the Beatles used!?
The song titles, apart from being vaguely amusing, usually doubled up as the entire lyrics for the tune in question.Iambic pentameter it is most certainly NOT.
Replace the words 'Gary' and 'Numan' from the following piece of constructive criticism last seen in a 1980 copy of Sounds with 'Anal' and 'Cunt',and you may get an idea of the far-reaching influence of this potty mouthed combo:
"Gary Numan (Anal Cunt) has managed to do for music what the Chimpanzee has done for William Shakespeare" (Sounds 1980-ish).
Scanning through the titles one can't help noticing the abundance of profound descriptions of the human condition in three words or less.
It's like Putnam is talking about me!?
You've Got No Friends,You're Old (Fuck You),Ha Ha, Your Wife Left You,You Got Date Raped, are devastatingly reflective...except maybe the date rape one.
Then we have the insightful: Pottery's Gay;Your Kid Is Deformed,Recycling Is Gay, and Windchimes are definitely Gay!?
And the whole French race is adequately summed up by "Your Favorite Band Is Supertramp"
Myself being an ex-european (I'm now British),there are spurious references to colloquial celebrities,of whom I know nothing except for Richard 'President Gas' Butler, who grew up a few junctions of the M1 south away from myself.
This album and concept,on the whole is a challenging work of Art that belongs in a pretentious gallery in East London......but to Seth Putnam that would be far too gay for him.
He died of a heart attack about a decade ago, which, in reference to the album title, gains a new sense of Irony which which one should find enjoyable.Maybe even funny?
I liked it when you died Seth Putnam.......but isn't dying a bit...er...Gay?

Genocide Association – "Sonik Lobotomy Demo Tape" + "Sonik Lobotomy Bootleg EP" (self-released) 1983

As a bit of a fair-weather Hardcore Punk fan,if I can,or endorse someone else, being a fan of anything; wot are my bestest three Hardcore albums?......this kind of behaviour strays dangerously into record collector twat-geek territory, but, believe me there is a point to all this, just bare with me.
I like that first Discharge Album,if you can actually call Discharge Hardcore,it sounds more like an avant garde masterpiece to me.Then top of the US Hardcore tree has to be Jerry's Kids' rather good "Is This My World" record....was that drummer on some type of performance enhancing drugs I wonder?
So, number one has to be, no not Minor Threat, nor,Napalm Death mk1,and incredibly not even Impulse Manslaughter.
Of course, and you may have already guessed....especially as the title is on display at the top of the page, It's ,from the home of Grindcore,Nottingham's own, Genocide Association innit?
105 brief tracks,or one long track depending on how you hear it, of cut'n'paste hardcore plunderphonia squeezed into 30 fun filled minutes.Apparently Minor Threat did actually get looped somewhere on this tape.....there's a prize for he who locates it.
What makes this even better is, in the proud tradition of fake bands,Genocide Association are nothing more than Dig of earache Records, before he'd heard of Thatcher's Enterprise allowance scheme....yes,Thatcher gave us Napalm Death and Grindcore...and mate Dayve from some other group. They had the bright idea to cut up a bunch of Hardcore demo tapes, rejig the constituent parts and make some rather crazed backing tracks for their shouty vocals. So, ideologically, this tape has a lot going for it in the Die or DIY? ethos of copying obscure cassette works from the punk hinterland and giving them new life. This was early Plunderphonics for want of a better synoptical cliché. If John Oswald had come up with this, it would have been lauded as an Avant-Garde statement of Noble Prize winning proportions.....rather like Discharge's first album. There are times when one asks oneself,"What the fuck am I Listening to"?...Which is the number one,and increasingly rare, look-for moment in any music is it not?
As mentioned in The Maximum Rock and Roll musical toilet paper, and Hardcore Bore Bible:
"Genocide Association (are) A bunch of xtreme nihilists/anartwits who despise the widely held concept of 'Anarchie' .. Possess no instruments.. Cynical to the point of lunacy."

How much more 'Punk' can one get than having no instruments, believing in nothing as controlling or as silly as Anarchy as your raison d'etre, and best of all, never playing a gig.
The fact that this was before samplers were affordable, and all this was done by laboriously editing the vocal-less parts from a pile of Punk Rock cassettes onto a couple of Cassette decks riff by riff, play/record/pause, change tape, repeat,is nothing short of inspiring .So the time signature can get a trifle eccentric from time to time, and the patchwork style sonik quality is endearingly inconsistent, veering from rich boy demo studio quality to one mike in a garage static fog
So, yeah, this is the best Hardcore Punk Recording of Allllll Time, musically and ideologically....Discuss.

Scorn ‎– "Vae Solis" (Earache ‎– MOSH 54) 1992

We are getting in really dodgy territory now, 1992. A truly terrible year for music. Awful sampling abuse, Dire drum machine conformity, Really shite Effects units. DJ's in their forties treated like some kind of messiah. We even started to accept and even enjoy our conformity.A Huxley-esque concept made fact, if ever there was one; and its even worse today.
A resident of the 'Chill Out' area, I managed to escape the vast majority of the atrocities being committed in these dance concentration camps, and lost myself in the bizarre world of Easy Listening, which was one interesting bi-product of club culture.
However, Metal ,as the only mainstream alternative to clubbing culture, was mutating into the only partly subversive counter culture activity. This was the start of the couple of hundred sub-genres of 'Metal' that exist today.
Earache was largely responsible for quite a few of those, one being Industrial Metal, as purveyed by Godflesh (featuring yet another ex-Napalm Death member Justin Broadrick) in the late eighties, from a recipe originally concocted by the rather good Killing Joke.
More Ex-Napalm Death members Mick Harris and Nic Bullen, joined in the fun with their 'Scorn' Project, which was a brutally effective unit for the first album or so,before the irresistible influence of club culture watered down the racket into some kind of over programmed trip hop nonsense.

Unseen Terror ‎– "Human Error" (Earache ‎– MOSH 4) 1987

The opposite end of the scale for snobbery and pretentiousness are a large majority of Metal categories, especially Grindcore and Speed Metal. Who would you sooner go and have a beer with? John Zorn or Unseen Terror?
I have been privileged to have a pint with Shane Emburey(drummer for Unseen Terror) and the rest of Napalm Death back in the day, and what a bunch of thoroughly decent and unpretentious chaps they were. Not had a similar experience with Zorn, but was briefly in his geekness's presence at the Knitting Factory's 10th birthday party for Shimmy Disc.....i was drunk, he was aloof.
'Human Error'was one of those early Earache Classics that appeared from apparently nowhere. Its relentless high velocity metal, and under-produced fuzz were certainly more interesting than the other so-called speed metal groups of the era. The drums were either played on one of those horrible Simmons kits, or sample triggers; and sound slightly unusual to say the least; but they were easier to record i guess. A real kit, thankfully, makes its appearance in the bonus tracks (Tracks 21 and 22 are from the "Diminished Responsibility" Compilation. Tracks 23 to 26 are Unreleased Rehearsal tracks.)
They were to get better, and as usual it was up to the BBC to capture them at their best in the Peel session that they recorded in 1988, with Mick Harris on vocals.

Naked City ‎– "Torture Garden" (Earache ‎– mosh 28) 1991

Jazzers, in general, aren't the most open minded of musicians, and do tend towards some rather unpleasant displays of intellectual snobbery......as we all do in different levels; I myself have been guilty of this Darwinian concept.......I do however reserve the right to call stuff like most Hip Hop, modern R &B,Boy Band Pop, and U2, Shit, both intellectually and morally.
John Zorn seems to be from the open end of the Jazz spectrum, along with Joey Baron(drums),and Bill Frisell (gtr),who seem to dispel the myth that Jazzers can't play metal.
(That said, Zorn was witnessed patronising an audience in my home town of Leicester on the Naked City Tour, by suggesting that such a provincial audience would prefer it if he played some Be-Bop; which he promptly did, and followed it up with some sneering comment afterwards.....prick!..i'll have him know that Napalm Death, the group he copied, also came from such provincial places as this, in fact just 20 miles down the road near Coventry...nobodies perfect i suppose?)
The jazz trendies are joined by proper people, Fred Frith, late of 'Henry Cow'on bass, and Yamatsuka Eye from the Boredoms, to provide some very daft vocals.
Whatever the Intellectual genius that John Zorn thinks he is, this style of music was shamelessly ripped off from brummy grindcore legends Napalm Death, with added alto sax, and musicianly polish.
The lower Manhattan art set are probably blissfully unaware of this, and would no doubt be heavily traumatised to discover such an unpleasant fact.
This album collects together all the wildest Naked City moments onto one twelve incher, and is an utterly superb avalanche of madness.....in sustained short spurts of machine gun fire.

PainKiller ‎– "Buried Secrets" (Earache ‎– MOSH 62) 1992

A Godflesh/Napalm Death/Last Exit supergroup with special guest star, John Zorn on Sax abuse.

You won't find any other Godflesh or Napalm Death record on the coffee table's of any self-respecting Jazz Snob.Sneaking in by the back door as PainKiller, most of this record would be skipped over by most pseudo-intellectual Jazz fakes, and then scramble for cover under the nearest John Coltrane double bootleg.
Anything with a saxophone in it gets labelled 'Jazz',like any punk band with a sax was immediately rubber stamped as 'Jazz Punk' (eg The Cravats).
So PainKiller is ,obviously, 'Jazzcore'.
A more correct epithet is improvised noise; there's as much rock, and Dub in there as there is jazz, but it is definitely improvised.
It has its musical moments, but mostly its like filling your ears with sonic caustic soda.......in a good way.

Pain Killer ‎– "Guts Of A Virgin" (Earache ‎– MOSH 45) 1991

The gore-fest continues with this unlikely combination of Grindcore and Avant Garde Jazz, that gave birth to the sub-genre of,yes, 'Jazzcore'!?
Excellent paint stripping stuff it is too.
Lower Manhattan jazz-bo trendies, John Zorn and Bill Laswell heard Napalm Death, and like envious children wanted to have a go themselves. So the best place to start was to poach Napalm Deaths drummer and lead screamer, Mick Harris, and release it on Earache Records.
A bludgeoning napalm attack on the senses if ever there was one.Zorn's treated sax caterwauling is nothing short of being on the receiving end of a flame thrower whilst cornered in a concrete bunker.
Could be the best release on Earache by a country mile?
It also contravened the laughable 'Obscene Publications Act' for the cover, and was subsequently banned, and replaced with an edited facial shot of the sliced up female in question.
No such censorship is allowed on here however.

Carcass ‎– "Reek Of Putrefaction" (Earache ‎– MOSH 6) 1988

I haven't listened to, or rather endured, this  for about 25 years! It certainly stuck out in the album racks at the record shop. Mainly due to the crass collage of post-mortem photo's that adorn this charming recording.
Certainly a classic of the early Earache releases, and featuring Napalm Death's own Bill Steer, exorcising his obvious need for gore.......Grindgore anyone?
Its all very low end mushed up grindcore doom, recorded under a mudslide; most likely a mudslide that engulfed a school full of children.
These are the kind of kids you'd find in the sixth form common room huddled in the corner swapping Dostoevsky and Yukio Mishima novels.
The Earache sticker on the cover kind of sums it all up......all for £4.99!

Napalm Death ‎– "The Peel Sessions" (Strange Fruit ‎– SFPDCD049) 1987/88

Twenty Five 'songs' in 20 minutes?!Now, that's either value for money or a total rip off!
In my humble opinion it's excellent value for money, and the only Napalm Death/Grindcore record you would ever need. This genre can't get any better than this? A bit like Hip-Hop never got better than Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back". After these two records, they, and their shameless imitators should have just called it a day. These two, seemingly polar opposite groups are black and white versions of the same thing I guess?

Napalm Death ‎– "Scum" (Earache ‎– MOSH 3) 1987

Comparing this monolithic jaw-dropping moment in music history to the Sewer Zombies album, (belated released by Ron Johnson to try and jump on the Grindcore bandwagon), Is like comparing being rammed by an icebreaker to being hit in the face by a soggy marshmallow.
Hearing this album for the first time was one of those rare, and getting rarer, "What the Fuck was that!?" moments.
Where did this come from? A mutated form of hardcore, doom metal (before doom ever existed),mixed up at different extreme tempo's, breakneck speed, to a soul crushing crawl. This was the first time I heard that growling vocal style, that is sooooo boring thirty years afterwards. Its an incredibly bizarre record, that borders on the Avant Garde, more than punk'n'metal; which was picked upon by Avant-jazzer ,John Zorn for his 'Naked City' project.....and later for the fantastic 'Painkiller' which included Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris.
This stuff was the only alternative to that bloody Acid House/rave nonsense that dominated for the next few decades.
Napalm Death were never the same after this, as line up changes, and repeating themselves endlessly dulled the effect. There should only have been one album, which would explain why several members left after its release.
However, the Peel sessions are in fact far superior to the official recordings...(coming up next of course).
