Superargo a-go-go

Last night's 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down of Superargo vs. Diabolicus was a diabolical good time, with solid contributions from Shout Down MVPs @lowdudgeon and @avantgardea (friend of the Shout Down @CulturalGutter was sadly MIA, but we know she'll come back to the fold sooner or later.) We also had some fun with a spray foam obsessed spambot. Check out the transcript here.

UPDATE: Now let's have a look at a trailer for our next feature, which we'll be shouting down on the night of February, 9th:

And tonight we'll be happily tweeting along to the gratifyingly colorful and silly Italian superhero romp Superargo vs. Diabolicus. Tuesday: The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down returns to referee SUPERARGO VS. DIABOLICUS!

That's right, the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down will be returning this coming Tuesday, January 5th. Because, hey, what better way is there to start off the new year than by tweeting along with your internet friends to a crazy ass movie? Our feature for the evening will be Superargo vs. Diabolicus, one of the better Italian superhero films of the 60s (see my Teleport City review here). Ken Wood stars as Superargo, a masked wrestler who retires from the ring after accidentally killing an opponent, only to be called back into action by the Secret Service in their battle against Diabolicus, a criminal mastermind. Will Superargo overcome his debilitating case of psychedelic PTSD and prove himself worthy in this effort? Perhaps this trailer will offer a clue:

The fun starts at 6pm Pacific time on Tuesday. Join us on Twitter using the hashtag #4DKMSD. A link to the complete film will be posted here. Ciao!

Next Tuesday! The 4Dk Monthly Movie Shout Down returns with METEOR!

Yes, it's true. The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down will be back next Tuesday and our feature for the evening will be Meteor.

Now, you might be asking yourself what a film starring Sean Connery, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden, Henry Fonda and Martin Landau is doing as the subject of a Movie Shout Down. But what you should really be asking yourself is what Sean Connery, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden, Henry Fonda and Martin Landau are doing in Meteor. The film is AIP's contributions to the 1970s disaster movie craze and features shouty acting, dubious science, and astonishingly awful special effects on an almost globally catastrophic scale. In other words, it is exactly the kind of fast paced and silly entertainment that the Shout Down Crew thrives upon.

Meteor is scheduled to impact at 6pm PT next Tuesday, November 10th. All you have to do to join in is log into Twitter and, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, comment along as we watch the film via the YouTube link that will be provided here. See you then!

Star Crash: accident report.

Regret missing last Tuesday's 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down of Star Crash? Well, here's some good news: Thanks to the transcript linked below, you will be able to effectively HALT THE FLOW OF TIME and experience the event anew. It's science.

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Tonight! The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down collides with STAR CRASH.

Tonight, the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down crew halts the flow of time and goes back to 1979, a glorious, pre-Jar Jar, pre CGI era, in which the worst threat a scantily clad space vixen might encounter was a herky-jerk, stop motion giant robot. Yes, tonight we are watching the awesome Star Crash, the creme de la creme of cheap Italian Star Wars knock-offs, and you won't want to miss it.

To join in, simply pop on to Twitter at 6pm Pacific time and, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, comment along with us as we watch this drive-in classic via the YouTube link posted below. It's going to be crash-tastic!

4DK's Week of Wonders

Quit your jobs! Abandon your children! Forsake your gods! Why? Because, next week, 4DK is GOING ON BLAST.

Tuesday: The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down rubbernecks STAR CRASH!

Why not channel some of your excitement about the new Star Wars movie into tweeting along with us to Star Crash, the galactic overlord of cheap Italian Star Wars knock-offs. Of course, the idea of cheesy 1970s stars like David Hasselhoff and Marjoe Gortner being engulfed in a maelstrom of practical special effects might not appeal to you, but I can't imagine why not. To participate, simply join us on Twitter at 6pm Pacific time and, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, fire off your tweets like a pleather-clad space centurion "pew pew pew"-ing away at a giant stop motion robot as we watch this drive-in classic. A link to the film will be provided here on the day of the event.

Wednesday: Pop Offensive returns!

Very soon, those of you within a narrow radius of Oakland's Laney College (you know who you are) will be able to listen to Pop Offensive on KGPC at 96.9 on the FM band. This will most likely not be the case with Wednesday's installment, which will be our gala 18th episode. Weep not, though, because you will still, as always, be able to stream the episode live from the 9th Floor Radio website, as well as listen to the archived version whenever your lazy ass gets around to it. (I said stop crying!) By that means, and only that means, will you be able to hear the fevered mix of world pop music that Jeff Heyman and myself have put together for you. What annoying bit of treacle will the "Spotlight on Eurovision" expose this week? What do the Ultra Chicks have in store? What seemingly unremarkable thing will leave Jeff aghast? Will there be nuggets? Tune in at 7pm PT and find out!

That was no lady.

As they say, some things are best left locked in the cupboards of recorded time--last Tuesday's tweet-along to Lady Terminator, for instance. Still, if your curiosity gets the best of you--and you have no fear of unleashing a cock-chomping Indonesian sex beast--click on the link below to read a Storified transcript of the whole sordid affair.

The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down: Lady Terminator on Storify

Tuesday, August 11, 2015

Tonight! The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down sees no end of LADY TERMINATOR!

Indonesian folklore tells of a goddess who rises up from the South Sea to take vengeance upon mankind. Indonesian exploitation cinema further tells us of how she takes the guise of a leather-clad, machine gun-toting underwear model. Yes, it's Lady Terminator, and her time has come. Time, that is, to be the subject of tonight's 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down. Please join us tonight--that's Tuesday, August 11th--on Twitter at 6pm PT as, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, we tweet along to this uproariously entertaining oddity.

A link to the full feature is below:

Tuesday! The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down gives a big hand to the LADY TERMINATOR

The next 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down is coming up this Tuesday, August 11, and believe me, you will not want to miss it. Our feature will be Lady Terminator, an Indonesian action film so 80s that even the explosions have mullets. You can read more of my thoughts on the movie here, but suffice it to say that there are few other films in the cult cinema canon that provide so much in the way of misbegotten hilarity.

To join in our action packed annotations of this classic, simply log into Twitter at 6pm PT sharp and, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, tweet along with us as we watch the film via the link I will provide here.

Tonight! The 4DK Monthly Shout Down lets it all burn with ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL!

Sure, we all blew up our schools to the sound of thundering punk rock, but somehow Rock 'n' Roll High School presents it in a light that makes it all seem fresh again. See for yourself tonight, when the overgrown teenagers of the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down Crew audit this classic of late 70's rocksploitation starring the one and only Ramones. The head banging starts at 6pm Pacific time. Simply join us on Twitter, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, and add your voice to the cacophony. A link to the complete film is below.

Tuesday: Go back to school with the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down!

It’s funny. In my high school, you’d get made fun of for liking the Ramones. And that was the best case scenario. Yet, in Rock and Roll High School, we’re shown a school where the Ramones are as beloved as KC and the Sunshine Band, Elton John—with or without Kiki Dee—and Grand Funk Railroad combined, adored even by popular girls who take their fashion cues from Battle of the Network Stars. If I had gone to this school, I would have been at the top of the social food chain. I might even have been friends with Clint Howard. Oh, it does set one to dreaming, doesn’t it?

Anyway, if you would like to join the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down crew in exploring this strange parallel dimension, simply log on to Twitter this Tuesday, July 9th, at 6pm Pacific time and, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, tweet along as we take the measure of a modern day classic.

Tonight! The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down lights one up with DEVIL'S DYNAMITE

For most, saying that a film is a spiritual sibling of Robo Vampire is far from a ringing endorsement. But for another rare breed of individual--say, the type who might participate in a 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down or likeminded movie tweetalong--such a description presents a challenge that cries out be met.

And to the rest of you--goodhearted, rational minded people who, when confronted with statements such as those made above, simply ask, "What in the name of sweet, ice cream-loving Jesus are you talking about?", I say this: Devil's Dynamite, which is the subject of tonight's Shout Down, is another chaotic mash-up from Tomas Tang's notorious Filmark International, one that combines Ninjas, hopping vampires, a dude in a tinfoil superhero suit, and low rent Mafiosi drama to deeply confusing effect. ...Kind of like Robo Vampire, which you've probably also never heard of.

Tonight, you will have to decide which of the above categories of purely hypothetical humans you belong to, as it is tonight that the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down crew staunchly endures the trials of Devil's Dynamite (hair shirts optional). If you think you have what it takes, join us on Twitter, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, tonight--Tuesday, May 12th--at 6pm PT sharp, as we tweet-along to the film using the link below:

Shout Down Tonight! Don't turn around, the Kommissar's in town... AGAIN.

Hey, kids. Do you like spy movies? Europeans? Outrageous "Mad Men" era sexism? Well, are you in for a treat... because tonight the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down crew is surveilling Death is Nimble, Death is Quick, the second entry in the Kommissar X series of goofy eurospy films. All you have to do to participate is join us on Twitter at 6pm PT and, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, tweet along with us to the movie, which you can watch via the YouTube link below. It's that simple!

4DK gives you reason to live for another week

With Funky Bollywood well on its way to literary infamy, it is now time to return our attention to those more routine distractions that I provide from the petty insults of daily life, two of which are coming up next week.

First of all, Tuesday, April 14th sees Tony Kendall and Brad Harris return to the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down in yet another antic entry in the Kommissar X series, Death is Nimble, Death is Quick. The film includes some dazzling stunts, beautiful location filming in Sri Lanka and Singapore, and all of the colorful spy-fi nonsense that made the previous Kiss Kiss, Kill Kill such a treat. As always, all you need is a Twitter account and access to YouTube to participate.

Here's a nifty trailer that someone else put together because I'm tired:

And then, on the following night, Wednesday, April 15th, Pop Offensive returns after a long absence, following the postponement of March's episode.

In honor of the book's release, this will be a special, Bollywood-themed episode, although we will still make room for plenty of the groovy pop sounds from around the world that have earned us our reputation as a show that plays that sort of thing. Per usual, the rumblings will commence at 7pm PT and continue until 9pm PT and can be streamed live from 9thfloorradio.com.

Where do I find the time, you might ask? But, more pertinently, where will YOU find the time? Because, although participation in neither of these events is mandatory, they are both essential to your well being. Or so I've heard.

Tonight! It's the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down vs. Starman vs. the EVIL BRAIN FROM OUTER SPACE!

That's right, Shout Downers. You--or someone bearing a vague statistical resemblance to you--asked, and the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down listened. Starman is back--and by a demand as uproarious as the keening voices of one or two meek shut-ins can reasonably be claimed to be. On the menu for tonight is Evil Brain From Outer Space and it's a doozy, filled with all the weirdly balletic fighting, creepy aliens, witches and child inappropriateness that last month's Invaders from Space lead you to expect--nay, demand!

A link to the complete film is below. Just fire that baby up tonight at 6pm PT and join us on Twitter, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, to give appropriately tweet-lengthed voice to your horror, despair and confusion.

Tuesday! Starman returns to the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down!

And so a council was called of the highest authorities in the galaxy, at which it was determined that Starman, a creature made from the strongest steel, would once again return to Earth at the behest of the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down crew. The threat this time: Evil Brain from Outer Space, a Frankensteinian creation of the evil Walter Manley Enterprises, whose scientists joined elements of three completely different movies to form one extremely disjointed and chaotic--albeit entertaining--movie-like substance.

Will Starman triumph against this ungodly creation? To find out, join us on Twitter, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, this Tuesday at 6pm PT and tweet along with us to the film using the link that will be provided here on this blog. It's what Starman would do.

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

Tonight! The 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down plays host to INVADERS FROM SPACE!

What goes together better than Japanese superheroes, witches, film noir, flying saucers, lizard people, and modern dance? Join the Shout Down crew on Twitter tonight at 6pm PT and find out, as we tweet along to the Starman adventure Invaders From Space. All you need is a Twitter account, access to YouTube, and the Hashtag #4DKMSD. A link to the film is below:

Tuesday! Only STARMAN can save the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down!

If you want the rub on Starman--or, as he's known in Japan, Supa Jiantsu--check out this episode of the Infernal Brains Podcast, in which Tars Tarkas and I examine his cinematic oeuvre with the tireless concision that only two hopeless lifelong nerds can muster. On the other hand, if you simply want to tweet along to his absolute weirdest adventure with the assembled hipsters and quipsters of the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down crew, just log into Twitter at 6pm PST this Tuesday, February 10th, and, using the hashtag #4DKMSD, watch and comment along with us to 1965's Invaders From Space--a link to which will be provided. Directed by Teruo Ishii, the maniac responsible for such twisted oddities as Horrors of Malformed Men and the Joy of Torture series, Invaders From Space gives us all the Tokusatsu silliness that we'd expect from a Japanese kiddie sc-fi adventure, but mixes it with heavy doses of bleak film noir atmosphere and surrealistic nightmare fuel. Here's a trailer I made:

We laughed, we loved, we kissed, we killed.

Last night's tweet-along to Kiss Kiss, Kill Kill ushered the 4DK Monthly Movie Shout Down crew into a whole new world; a world where a woman's hair could only be either purple or margarine yellow, where unctuous innuendo stood in for charm, and New York policemen lead ravaging armies of milkmen across the capitals of Europe. To gauge our reactions for yourself, simply refer to the Storified transcript linked below.
