Another mysterious 'thing' 11-29-11

I don't know why I notice odd things, I just do.  Several years ago I posted this on this Blog:
http://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=3236658054810119404&postID=7716549533745949564
And a year or two ago I noticed the same phenomena, the "fairy" in the trashcan on just about the same day of the year.   Obviously the trashcan was in about the same location - and still is!

The other day in a parking lot I went to put the key in the car ignition and saw this mysterious light.  Another 'fairy' only this time in the key hole of my car!  How did that get in there?

I moved my hand around to find the light source and discovered that this light is coming through the side window which was partially down.  Why the light was shining at this angle I don't know - I have not seen this before and find it a bit spooky.  I hope I don't see it again.

Oddities 06-15-10

Life is full of strange quirks and oddities. I frequently see strange signs or billboards that pose a quandary in my mind. Years ago, whilst driving across Quebec, I kept seeing handwritten signs in French and wondered what they said - for sale? lost dog? room for rent? No. I eventually learned they said "Worms for sale". Lots of fishing up there, I guess. I recently saw a billboard advert for an airline that said, "Fly like a who's who, Pay like a who's that." Huh? Didn't catch the name of the airline.
I bought the Lexus on April Fool's Day 2009 - maybe this is the April Fool's joke. Sometimes when I took a disc out of the DVD player (I've never had one previously) I would hear these little children's voices, rather faint. I didn't hear them all the time, but I knew they were the same voices. On the way home from Mary's I put in a Patsy Cline disc and nothing happened - no music - and when I tried to eject it, it wouldn't eject. So, yesterday I visited my favorite garage to see if they had any suggestions. As Ron was looking at the manual a guy came in with his car and walked over. Upon hearing the problem of the children's voices he said, "how about the DVD player in the backseat?" - my brain asked "there's a player in the backseat?". Sure 'nuff there is a player and this disc was inside. Out with the children's voices. The problem with the player in the front is not solved, but I have discovered that if I turn off the ignition and turn it on again the disc will eject. Ron says I will have to visit the (hated) dealer - maybe not, maybe I will just keep turning the key off and on. Might be tricky given how much I hate to pull over even for pictures. No clutch to pop, either.
Whoa - is this ever a strange sight!! I was driving from Mary's east to I-5 when I thought I saw a horse in a utility trailer. Naaaah, can't be. But, just to be sure, I was pushing the limit trying to get in position for a picture. Not a very good picture, but it proves that there WAS a horse in a utility trailer.... a fake horse, thank heaven. His tail was some sort of fiber so it waved in the breeze, making the horse seem even more real.

What is it? 08-06-08

Another guessing game! No prizes - just focusing and seeing what is actually there.
I really like this one.

BMW ad + What is it? answer

A reader sent me this URL for another comment about the mysterious billboard ad I saw on Friday. When I drove past yesterday I looked closer and saw the BMW web address in the lower left corner. But I still don't understand what it means! Of course, I will never buy a BMW, so I guess I don't really care.
What were the pictures in my blog for 07-20-08? They show marks of tires on the center barrier of the San Diego Fwy south of Orange County. They do look like snowdrifts w/sand or the sky with wildfire smoke, but also like desert dunes. Last year I was driving back and forth to San Diego to be a gallery guide at the exhibit "Quilts from the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection". I spent a lot of time in very slow, stop and go traffic, so it was easy to snap the pictures as I burned up gasoline while sitting idle. The trip could be anything from 2 hours to 3-1/2 hours depending on freeway conditions.

Mysterious views 07-20-08

I took these pictures this same week last year. I thought I might try Thermofaxing them, just to see how they might print. But I haven't found the time, yet.

They look like some place in the desert.

Smoke?
Blowing sand?

Birds, Mysterious Ads 07-18-08

I picked up Corky in Long Beach this afternoon and on the way home I saw this Osprey bout three blocks from his house. He was perched on a light standard right over the street, spending most of his time preening and not posing for pictures. These are the best I could do with my digital camera.

Osprey are one of the bird species that was threatened with extinction by the use of DDT. They have made a good comeback since DDT was banned in the USA. I see them frequently about two miles from my house near Anaheim Lakes (which are artificial) because several Osprey nesting poles have been erected in the area.

Osprey eat fish, diving into the water to hook them with lethal talons. They carry them suspended in both feet with the fish head pointing forward to cut down on drag. An elegant form of delivery to nest or roosting tree.
Growing up in western Oregon I saw a lot of Osprey fishing in the rivers and lakes, I'm so glad to see them more frequently now.

The mysterious ad was on a billboard along the freeway. It was one of those that keep the product a bit of a mystery - I didn't see a brand name, but I was going 65 mph. All I caught was the image of an auto and the words, "Distilled yet not reduced." How do they distill a vehicle? And why? Weird stuff.

Inventive, anyway. 07-08-08

Someone sent this to me over the weekend and it made me laugh. In fact, everytime I think about it, I laugh again. There are people in this world who still live by the Depression era motto: Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.
The caption below came with it.

Check out this summer top. No sewing, just a few cuts! It is was taken in front of the Gardendale, Alabama, Wal-Mart while she was going to the Flea market. Look at it closely. Now I ask you...Who sits and looks at a pair of men's briefs and says hmmmm..."I can make a nice summer top from these?" On the other hand...$9 for a three-pack is a good price! Hope she got the tri-color variety pack!

Conflicting views 06-28-08

A few more of those things that strike me as odd.
I've seen a lot of the fish logos on vehicles and find that the people who display them to indicate their Christian faith aren't any more polite than those that don't. And some of them even know and use the one finger salute. When I saw this fish on the truck in front of me I crept up a little closer to be sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. I don't understand what he is trying to say. We were waiting at a level RR crossing so I had plenty of time to whip out my camera and click away. The driver probably wondered what I was doing, but he didn't jump out and shoot me - nice guy. Click to enlarge.

I've always been able to read words upside down pretty well and it can get me in trouble. When I read this sign on the street I quickly turned into a parking lot because I thought I was going the wrong way! I should have paid attention to the arrow, not the sign.

This shop is in Fullerton, but I can't figure out if it is a chain or one of a kind. I'd never seen this name before and it somewhat bothers me. Babies are not plants, though I guess they do basically come from seeds of a sort, and I find this a little offensive. Of course, you have to consider that I will be seventy this year and still carry some of the lessons I learned as a girl. One didn't even speak of pregnancy in public, much less have signs showing a womb with a little plant in it. Mothers-to-be wore clothes that camouflaged their condition - no longer. www.bellysprout.com

I must confess, I enjoy seeing that little computer response, "No misspellings found."

Another trash can 05-11-08

I seem to be having a 'thing' with trashcans! Remember this one from March?
Now my friend Barbara has sent pictures she took on a trip to China and among them is this great visual.

Translations into English are so tricky!

Did you notice?

I cannot resist taking pictures of odd things that I notice, digital makes it so easy to just whip out my camera and click away. Like the Fairy in the Trashcan http://delquilts.blogspot.com/2008/03/fairy-in-my-trash-can-03-28-08.html

Walking through a parking lot today I saw these wings in the back window of a car. I wonder who left their wings behind. And do they miss them?

Last October I took this funny picture of Bermuda grass that has grown up through the sign pole (7 feet?) and out the top. Bermuda grass will grow anywhere if you don't watch it carefully.

When I was on a road trip in July 2005 I drove through Hailey, Idaho, and noticed these odd stop signs. A main highway goes through the center of town and is apparently very dangerous. So, before you walk across the street you are supposed to take a red flag, hold it high as you cross the highway and then put it in a similar holder on the other side of the street. I think the matching motorcycle adds a nice touch. I wonder if he forgot to carry a flag.

On the same trip, somewhere near the Idaho/Utah border this truck was bearing down on my van. I was afraid if I didn't get out of his way he might take a bite out of my tailpipe. I have since seen this sort of grill decoration all over the West.

A fairy in my trash can! 03-28-08

I was out in the garage folding laundry and turned around to see...
a flickering light in the trash can! The thought that popped into my mind was that a fairy had gotten trapped in there. Now, I am not inclined to believe in fairies and the like, so I have no idea where that came from. Not knowing what I would find I stepped over to see inside and discovered that a sunbeam coming through the turbine on the roof was shining just on that spot. No fairy! But it was sort of magical. In just a few minutes the sunbeam moved on and it was just a dumpy old trashcan again.
