Grasses 01-27-22

Grasses can be so graceful and colorful.  I frequently take pictures of them, as you saw in yesterday's blog.  This is a quilt I made for the SAQA 12X12 auction in 2007.  I almost wished I didn't have to give it to them, but it did sell and made a few hundred dollars for the organization.

"The Grasses Return"  Del Thomas - California  2007  12" X 12"
Cotton and silk fabrics, cotton thread, metallic thread, Wonder Under
Fused, machine quilted.

DETAIL  Upper left.

Back with sleeve and label.  Facing instead of binding.

Label.  This is where the bird is.

Quilts by Linda Colsh in TCQC 08-19-18

I am attracted by the work of Linda Colsh and there are four of her quilts in TCQC.  Part of the attraction must be the mystery the quilts present.  They depict places and things that I don't recognize and I am always looking closely for a clue to the juxtaposition of the different motifs in each quilt.   I have presented each of these quilts on my blog previously, so you can click on Linda's name in the right sidebar if you want to know what I have said before.
Linda's website is:  https://lindacolsh.com/

"Ewe Alone"  Linda Colsh  2007   26" X 26"

"Grand Tour"  Linda Colsh  2007  12"X12"

"Gentle Reminder"  Linda Colsh  2008   12"X12"

"Run Bright and Reflect"  Linda Colsh 2015  20"W X 59"L
This was part of an exhibit at Visions Art Museum in San Diego in 2015.  It was one of seven pieces that followed a theme of Linda's walks along a stream at different times of the year.  Below are pictures she took for inspiration.   The stones were actual stones that she traced around and painted onto the white background.

These were taken near Middletown, MD, where Linda lives.

Re-visiting a Bodil Gardner quilt from 10 years ago 12-03-17

I always enjoy Bodil's quilts and have previously posted several that have been shown at PIQF (check the sidebar for her name). She has such a sense of whimsy and an great eye for color.  This quilt came from the SAQA 2007 online auction.

"Lady with a Mug"  Bodil Gardner - Denmark  12"x12"  2007
Mostly cotton fabric.  Machine appliqued and quilted
She did not title the quilt, so I added my choice.

The dress fabric appears to be a recycle.

Bodil often includes a mug in her quilts - seems to fit almost anywhere.

She covers every edge with satin stitch.

A very sparse label, but it at least has her e-mail address.
There are two short "sleeves" instead of one that goes the width.

Thursday Threads - Grasses Return 06-15-17

This is a little 12" X 12" quilt made for the SAQA auction back in 2007.  So, it is in someone's collection.  I like to make these little quilts for fund raisers, but don't seem to be inspired the last few years.

Quilt from TCQC by Kristin LaFlamme 09-09-12

Here is a quilt by Kristin that I posted previously in July 2007.   But now I have some detail shots and an image of the back of the quilt.  That earlier post is at:

"Village Series #7: To Be Uprooted" Kristin La Flamme 2007 12" X 12"
Machine pieced, hand and machine quilted.

I don't know if Kristin is still working on this series, but one of the nice things about a series is that it never has to end.  Even after the passage of years one can revisit the idea and continue adding new work.
This row of houses is stamped on fabric and then color added.  The roots are a monoprint on striped fabric.

The piece Flying Geese on the left are in contrast to the "rootedness" of the houses.  Kristin slipped in a little map here.  She knows lots about maps as an Army wife who has recently moved with her family again - this time to the east coast.

As you can see on the label this quilt was created while the family was stationed in Germany.  I like that all the stitches show on the back.

You can see more of Kristin's work on her website http://www.kristinlaflamme.com
Or following her life, family and work at her blog http://kristinlaflamme.com/musings/
She is also a member of the online group Twelve by Twelve http://www.twelveby12.org/

Diane Bielak quilt from TCQC 06-12-11

Here is another quilt from SAQA 2007 online auction.

"Hanging Out Together"  Diane Bielak - Toano, VA 2007  12" x 12"
Fabrics: cotton, polyester, silk, metalic sheers.  Three of the leaves appear to be ceramic made by the artist.  Couched threads for stems.  Sheer leaves outlined in gold and copper paint (puff paint?).  Machine pieced, appliqued and quilted.

The leaf on the right is one of the ceramic leaves painted with gold.

A simple "label" on the sleeve with not quite enough information.

But a lovely sun print of a fern frond.
Sorry the color on these pictures is not great, but the best my camera could do.

TCQC quilt by Bodil Gardner of Denmark 06-05-11

As I check through the records for the Collection I have found a number of quilts that I have not posted on this Blog.  I made a list, but now I can't locate the list.  So, I will have to make a new list.  I do remember this the two Bodil quilts I purchased at the SAQA 2007 online auction had not been shown.

"Lady With a Mug" Bodil Gardner - Denmark  12"x12"  2007
Mostly cotton fabric.  Machine appliqued and quilted.
I always enjoy Bodil's quilts and have previously posted one that was at PIQF (check the sidebar for her name).  She has such a sense of whimsy and an eye for color.

The satin stitch applique is rough, but fits the subject matter.

Great baggie eyes and pop out ears.  And notice the fabrics she uses for eyelids, bags and under nose.  And the yellow edge for the aqua hair.  Her work is very different and very special.

A very plain back and a very plain label.  She did not title this quilt, so I did.
