Karen Miller quilt from Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection 07-23-23

This is one of only two Katazome quilts in the Collection both by Karen Miller. And, I think, it is the only "fishy" quilt there is.   Lots of birds, but no fish or reptiles.  Guess they  are just not my "thing".

"California Gold"  Karen Miller - Corvallis, OR 2007  42"W x 19"L
Cotton and silk fabric, commercial batik fabric.  Stenciled with hand detail.
 Machine pieced and quilted.
Karen uses the ancient technique of Katazome to create her hand stenciled fabrics.  It is a very intricate and time consuming process, but the results are breathtaking.  You may have met Karen at her booth (Nautilus) at some of the larger quilt shows (PIQF, East Bay Heritage Quilters, IQF-LBeach), you could hardly miss her very beautiful fabrics and panels, many of them in indigo.  On her website she demonstrates the process she uses:

Friday Food 08-27-21

One of the best things about computers, to me anyway, is having tens of thousands of pictures I can scroll through and remember people, places, events, animals, flowers - just everything.  I just spent an hour looking for pictures of food for this post and enjoyed images of trips I have taken, quilts galore, Surfside Quilters Guild members and meetings  And that was only two years worth!  I did think I took more food pictures than I can find now, but settled on these three, all from ten years ago in 2011 in widely separated locations. .

I enjoy eating fish, but don't cook it much at home because I don't BBQ and my oven hasn't worked for years.  So, I eat fish when I eat out.  This is one of my favorite meals - Salmon, broccoli, baked potato (or rice).  Makes me hungry just thinking about it!   This was in Long Beach, CA..

Another favorite is fish tacos  I especially like shrimp which are very good at  Chronic Tacos, but these two are from a food truck that used to serve at lunch time in Brea, CA.  I prefer corn tortillas, but they only served flour.

And, of course, sushi is high on my list of favorites.  This yummy roll was at a tiny sushi place near Beaverton, Oregon.

I may have to go out for sushi tomorrow night., probably to my favorite neighborhood spot "Fish in a Bottle" .  Since the pandemic is so threatening I may have to do takeout.  But it will be the best.

Birthday flowers 09-02-20

Thank you to all the kind, thoughtful people who sent Birthday Greetings to this old lady.   I can't express how much it means to me.  It makes me think about the "Cheers" intro song about "....everybody knows my name."   Thank you.

One friend send this beautiful fragrant bouquet to cheer my days for awhile.  Daisies and carnations, what a great combination.

Those interesting loops around the flowers look like ribbons, but are actually leaves.   I should know what kind they are, but I can't think of it now.  They have made a small hole in the middle of the leaf and folded it back to insert the stem through the hole.  These loops are placed with the stems in the water around the edge of the vase.  Clever.

Today I had lunch with my isolated friends at their home with take out from Cedar Creek Inn in Brea.   I had fish tacos that were street version with three small tortillas and a filling of flaked fish (cod or halibut?) and chopped veggies.  I ate them before I even thought of a picture!

It has been a lovely birthday.  Thank you all again.

Friday Food 01-04-19

I don't always remember to take pictures of my food at restaurants.  Way back in 1990 when I went on a textile tour of Great Britain there was a lady who photographed almost all her meals.  This was before digital cameras and we all thought she was a little odd, but, hey, do your own thing.  With digital it seems there is always someone snapping shots of what they eat.  I find it interesting and enjoy looking back at what I ate and when and where.  One of my favorite meals I always order to go and that is poke bowls.  My favorite place is H2O in Irvine, but I don't really understand why their food is better than other places I try.  I wouldn't mind finding a place closer to home, Irvine is about 17 miles, so I only go there when I am en route from south Orange County or San Diego.

One goes down the serving counter and selects the items one wants in their bowl.  Here is sushi rice, salmon, scallops, corn, edamame, papaya, masago, special sauce, and black sesame seeds.  One has three fish selections, but i ask for two scoops of salmon and one of scallops.  Sometimes I vary it, but this is my favorite combination.  Soooooo good.

Friday Food on Saturday! 08-11-18

I don't know why I missed posting last night.  I didn't go to bed early.  I was still sorting yesterday and again today and managed to clean out six boxes.  So, I'm making progress.  I repeat - "get busy and organized your stuff, lest you get hit by a bus."  Of course, it will take me months to wade through my mess.  So I shouldn't be admonishing anyone else!

Crusted sturgeon w/risotto, asparagus and coleslaw at Hops - Kalispell, MT  06-06-12

The first and only time I have eaten sturgeon, it was fantastic, but it isn't something I usually see on menus.  This small restaurant in Kalispell was a real find and I ate there several times during the week I was there.  When I returned in a later year the place was still called Hops, but it was an entirely different menu.

Salmon in caper sauce - Lunch at Solare - SDiego  02-01-13

In looking through my photo files I find that I mostly have pictures of sushi, sashimi, or cooked fish.  I usually do eat fish when I am out because I don't do a good job of cooking it myself.  When a friend and I were on a road trip she finally asked me if I was going to eat salmon every day.  My answer, "If I can!".  And I did.

A little fishy box 08-25-15

Three years ago I took these pictures at the home of my friend Joan in Pacific Grove.  I thought at first it was a netsuke, but it is a little carved ivory box (the owner of the box tells me it is not ivory - don't know what it is made of).  I don't have any information about the it, I just think it is wonderful.

One side of the about 2.5" tall box.

And the front of the box.

And the other side.

And with the lid off.
What a wonderful little treasure.

See an update on this on 09-30-15

Friday Fish 11-30-12

The day was bound to come when I had no feet and no fannies to post.  So, I decided to share this image which is from a display at the Naval Training Center in San Diego along the hallway we walk from Visions Art Museum to have lunch at Solare restaurant.  This picture just tickles me.

This lady is so nicely dressed in what I suppose is a cannery workers uniform, white stockings, a necklace and a gardenia corsage.  And yet she is holding a sticky, smelly fish.   This was surely before women were permitted to wear trousers, so pre-WWII.   What an incongruous image!  But that's advertising for you - tricky and deceptive.

This is the sign alongside the picture, telling about a canning industry that has long ago moved overseas.
